It's been a while since I did my last portfolio case study, but I'm blown away by this website. Danbee Shin is a web designer that has taken the feedback I usually give in my reviews and case studies to the next level.
I consider this the best graphic design portfolio 2020; that's why I call it the perfect design portfolio. If you enjoyed this case study of web design, let me know, and we'll do more.

Thanks for watching the video BEST WEB PORTFOLIO: Case Study of Web Design
It's funny how it's way easier to design websites for others, but when it comes to my own, it's never finished
This is a great business website, and it saddens me to see people talking about her design being too 'generic' or 'lacking animations' when the focus should be on how the design best serves her audience. Extremely complicated, animation-heavy websites often have a lot of accessibility problems, and let's remember that Danbee's ideal clients are NOT tech savvy or designers. They don't care about these things. What these people want is to communicate well with their own clients, they could care less if their websites win them design awards. To become better designers, we need to leave the designer ego behind and truly focus on what best serves our audiences. Congratulations to Danbee for nailing down her niche and communication strategy so beautifully! And thank you Ran for the amazing breakdown!
Yanira Santana Perfectly said! I couldn't agree more. Don't let ego get it the way even if it's a struggle. What matters is who you're serving, not having the coolest features in your industry.
@@nicolewiesner1772 her website is so inspiring
This is hands-down one of the best UA-cam comments I've ever read. Well said on all fronts.
True, most designers/creatives are building their brand to attract creatives, like how crazy is that? Realised that yesterday and I'm revisiting my goals and strategy.
one of the best niche web designer sites I've come across as well. loved her added results section!
Her Copywriting game is so strong. Great inspiration.
Agreed, makes me want to learn copywriting!
This makes me want to re-design my website...again.
Same haha
Can you make a playlist with all portfolio case study reviews? Just an idea. Love watching these.
Love the work, thanks for sharing Flux and thank you Danbee Shin.
Would love to see this kind of videos ! Thanks for this one.
Thank you Ran! This is great
I actually love Danbees website and choices in approach and layout so glad you picked this out to highlight - Whilst I am always impressed by websites that have moving parts on scrolling, animated elements that pop out, slide and move in and out of place, these are all distractions as well as time consuming concepts to get right but in the end do they really support what the client needs?
These days a nice clean focused site without all the fancy stuff really hits the spot in my mind - saying that a simple little animation appropriate to the clients site, persona and messaging can be an interesting cherry on the cake. Thanks again for sharing as I need all the ideas I can get as I delve back into web design after a long absence
Thanks so much, John! I love exploring other people's beautiful websites with lots of (literal) moving parts, but like to keep things simple in my client work!
Another great video!
Thank you for the insights.
Veeeeery inspirational.
Neeeaaaattt ;)
This is great advice. This portfolio was great to review because it covers allot.
I'll redesign my website. Thank you for this wonderful website. Great inspiration.
Thanks for this.
I've been designing/redesigning my UX/UI portfolio in Webflow for years, and though my capability as a designer has improved significantly, the vast majority of my work experience has been in food service and as a degree-less peasant can't even get hiring managers to look at it. Recently I decided my best bet would likely be freelance, and using my chef cred to land clients in the food service industry could be incredibly effective.
This lil review gave me a lot of [painfully obvious] ideas and the conviction to, well, not be scared of niching down.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got SO much coffee to drink. =D
Amazing!
Currently rebuilding my web portfolio, I'm gonna use this video as a checklist for what to do, thanks a lot!
Whoop, good luck with your portfolio!
Thanks Danbee, you did a great job!
Wow I'm inspired thanx for sharing @Flux
This one is awesome and I think it makes me feel more reassured 🤓
Thanks, Norm! 💛
my first impression was: shes a health coach and you can book her as a health coach. i recognized that shes a webdesigner only because ron said, that she is. so i am not sure if this site is really that good :) it kind of leads me in the wrong direction. maybe just because she is so specific. also beeing so specific, i doubt she will get much work outside health coaches business, because there are not so many health coaches out there looking for a website. but maybe i am wrong and she gets a lot of conversion.
There are more than enough health coaches, especially if she becomes the go-to person for health coach websites.
Since this video was posted, she's increased her prices by thousands of dollars. Her business is doing incredibly well. :)
@@ethanrogers9627 could be that this happens and she becomes the get-to person.
i dont see any prices besides these templates or courses or whatever they are. where do you see thousands-of-dollar-prices?
@@ethanrogers9627 ah i found the prices, well when shes finding people who pay 8500 for a website template, then shes really fine :)
Agreed. It's fine to niche down but you have to choose your market carefully.
I went over her website just yesterday! Fantastic copy 🙌
Thank you so much, Nicole! The copy always takes me longer than the design.
I thought I was doing it wrong because it also takes me longer to write the copy 😅 good to know!
It would be helpful to get some before/after stats on achieving their business goals. How much did it improve their sales?
Wow I'm saving myself a lot of money by doing web design as a hobby haha
This was insightful, I will try to incorporate these thing in my own website.
Amazing copy on her site, makes me really want to learn copywriting. I'm a crap writer that's nearly 40 so probably a non-starter haha
It's not as hard as you think. Check out Sean Vosler's 6-figure marketing copy.
It's a very cheap alternative to most of the courses & it'll give you a good headstart.
Thanks, Dave! Lots of people who say they're bad writers have found they're awesome at writing copy!
Hi there, I went through her website today and it looks amazing. Very subtle and talks a lot about her choices.. It is simply perfect to look at. However I was thinking, she might have to consider adding a button which helps to scroll up, it is kind of tedious to scroll up all the way when you have reached the end of the page, especially the project pages like M for health etc. No offense, just my point of view.
Agreed
This is the website of a writer, not a visual designer. Furthermore, no man in the personal trainer business would respond positively to all the words or pale color scheme; it's clearly for women only. If this was DanBee Shin's goal, she hit it perfectly.
Bradd Graves A health coach is not a personal trainer...
@@esalenchik Pardon me. That doesn't change the nature of the comment. This site sucks big time from a design point of view, unless the author was consciously targeting women who have more money and ego than brains.
@@BraddGraves It took you 4 separate angry comments to finally get to your point: This site looks girly and you don't like it. But, mate, it's made by a woman. If you don't resonate with it, that doesn't mean it's bad design-it just means its not for you.
@@ethanrogers9627 Right. Don't answer a single criticism, and claim it's only personal. Clown. This design is indefensible, and you've just proved it.
great video , but maybe really adjust the mic the high ends are just too sharp. And the website was built on oslo theme , its a wordpress theme , you can use plugin like what runs for chrome to check the tech behind a site
She's a great sales person lest a web designer
What to do if you do not want to work only for one category of people, but you want to get different projects from different industries? Why is generic not okey for a designer?
great content as always.
just a suggestion: the sound is too sharp in the high end. it hurts. consider a voice filter
fix ur headphones
@@Sapix_ no hes right u can hear it on the S sounds etc
Sapix my ipad works fine, thanks
@@user-ft2md2gd4s well most people are listening to this through earbuds or headphones
The link structure is pretty odd and confusing. There's no direct link to the packages in the main menu, and when you click the See Packages link in the middle of the home page, you go directly to the Top of the services page, and have to scroll to the very bottom -- quite a long way, after a lot of text and links about "book a call" -- to finally get to the packages. Not a mistake, I think. In my view, this strategy creates annoyance at best and conveys dishonesty at worst.
She's only showcasing three completed projects, not enough for prospective clients. Her messaging is way off and puts me off. Different identites? Inclusive websites? These are silly buzzy phrases that mean absolutely nothing.
@@outpost31737 you seem salty
great
You like a pro
Many Many Thanks for sharing such an important Thing with us.

I love it however there are stone walls / dead ends i.e when scheduling a chat there is no way back / nav is missing
That is to make sure your potential lead doesn't get distracted and finishes and completes the schedule. There is a specific word for it but its strategic.
Where are your glasses from?
Can I use webhosting or should I code my own website???
😅
Hey Ran. Can I ask - did you look at her work, or just her portfolio? In my opinion her website is fairly average and while it's clear and her messaging is great, it's not really that superb as a UI or creative example in my opinion. When I looked at her work - her clients' websites - they are all very much the same, and they are all based on her own website concepts. I'm interested if you have some other reason for covering this particular website when it's really not that amazing. Thanks.
Why should any of the websites be structured differently if they're all solving the same problem?
Nice.. :)
hey ran great content! I have a question. If I am just starting out in design for freelancing and I have not the relevant work to show in the portfolio. Then what will I do go for niche or just go broadway.
First of all you should decide what exactly do you like designing. Then make up a couple of projects. People want to see what you can do. Just imagine 3 different businesses and make the designs like they are real. Many freelancers started like this, me included, just don’t do free work!
ui method what you mean..don’t work for free...??..Isn’t most freelance work is free..for projects? Who will validate or provide recommendations if the business is not even there...?
Since she’s a freelance web designer, she doesn’t necessarily need to include UX Design process (problem space, design alternatives, prototype, test) just curious
Cool website but I'd be more impressed if they made their own rather than using a squarespace template
Improve your mic bro! High pitch voice is hurt our ears😂
Love your content.
How to make this kind website in bootstrap and make responsive ?
not gonna lie it's an amazing website... but, IMO if I see a website like this, the first thing come to my mind is it's not a legit business website, it looks like a john / jane doe website template...
how’d she layer all the images on front page? did she make 3 columns and adjust margins and z index’s?
this was done in squarespace, probably a template or adjust stuff in the CSS section.
@@FluxAcademy thanks Ran! always so helpful, have a great day
Going to the site, I get the impression DanBee Shin is a health coach because it says AS A HEALTH COACH, as the first line. That's confusing right off the bat. Were I a potential client looking for a web designer, I might very well leave before reading further.
Oops, that's the About page. But still.
The website now is not for health coach anymore. And the price is starting at $12000.
Does anyone here have some experience with this particular niche? Is it a good niche in terms of money? My passion is in this niche actually so I would love to know! Thanks in advance.
We don't always need animations
6:43 You say she should put a CTA for the two options, but it's not like they're just going to "add to cart" a 5000 dollar website... They're going to call or email her, that's the CTA, and that's *exactly* what she puts "immediately* afterwards anyway...
8:37 you say she should "put the results at the top"... What was that about going through the whole process and not just skipping to the end you said earlier? It's like you forgot everything you just said several mins ago lol.
Oh my... 3500USD for a website? Why don't i work remotely already :( I'm getting like 400USD per website at my place.
Take a course of Ran in which he explains $10K website process.
Just imagine all the lucky designers in the mid to late 90s who were banking 3-8k for garbage 1 page websites during the dotcom boom.
@@michaelstollairetbarceo3287 Well, you are right that a website from that era would be done in like 30 minutes. But we have the tools now to make it that fast. I'm not sure if it was that easy to build some html code back then using notepad. Not even speaking about availability of learning material. Maybe building a website back then was like setting up machine learning system in difficulty.
What if you are not photogenic?
Photos are always a risk if you're not hot or the right age group. But it's not a beauty contest. Your expression, clothing, posture, and can convey the impression you want to make. The photo used by this woman isn't great for a couple reasons, but mainly because of the shrugged in shoulders and little girl smile. Conveys right away she's not a serious person. This has nothing to do with her average looks.
Good question. Some people I know are beautiful in real life but in photos, it just won't come out - or worse come out scary and makes the opposite "feel" to it.
Website is built in elementor plugin in 5 minutes
very very
Maybe its just a commercial for her webpage
$3500 for a square space website?!? I charge that for a bespoke website.
Charging that much for a website with a 37/100 mobile score from google is just plain wrong.
Having been through the code a bit now, that site is a hot mess. I don't know how much is Squarespace's fault and how much is the designer. All credit due on the general design and copy though, that's good. But there's things like meta tags in the body text and lots of un-necessary JS.
@@0-Will-0 Squarespace and wix flatforms are terrible. They are easy to build, but terrible for seo and page speed. It seems like a hugh rip off for what she is charging for a bloated easy to build site. If she was building it on wordpress it would be a different story.
her pic is on the other side now LOL
The concept and flow are nice, the design looks a bit template-y to me..
Since she's a Squarespace designer, she most likely used a SS template as a starting point and then customised it either simply via the in-built editing features and/or used CSS code injections to customise the site design further.
Thanks, Shoshana! I do always use templates for my website and for my clients - this helps us focus on the client journey and making sales.
@@lauraniebel3510 So cool to see you here, Laura! I have you to thank for getting me on Webflow
@@danbeeshin Hey! I have a question. Not sure if you still design websites now but back to the time of this video, how did you work with squarespace for you clients ? Did they have to pay for the membership + your services ?
@@tbmadeitt If you mean the Squarespace subscription, the client pays for it. And yes - I still create awesome Squarespace websites for clients!
Judge a book by its cover a lot?
I like the strategy but the design feels a little generic.
Not trying to be insulting to anyone but locking yourself into such a tight niche is a little insane to me. It's not that I am "afriad", as was said in the video, I think its lowkey an awful business decision. Keep this content as a landing page for SEO and conversions but diversify your income streams for God's sake.
exactly what I thought! I understand it's important to find your niche, but how many life coaches that are willing to pay 3500$+ for a website will you come across ? personally i find it wayy too specific.
@@catherineboudreau1891 Therapists, Nutritionists, Fitness Trainers - all related to health and could be her potential clients. What whould be your example(s) of less specific nich(es)? Just asking.
Yes and I think it is nice to have different kind of projects. Just doing the same kind of website seems boring in the long haul tbh. I love the diversity of web design and development because of the creativity and not just being inside a box.
She need to first make her website performance better than this. If I am a client such a slow website, I would never give the job...
Hii
I am Aadwitiya Anil i kinda need your help i am a coder (not that professional one😅) i want to design a portfolio page of me and 3 of my friends so the problem is that i am using an offline editor named as "Sublime Text" i want that the pics to be big and when i clicked on one of them it should take me to another website
So kindly suggest me some code..
Thank you in advance😉😘
I like the design too, but I think there is too less animations.
Super basic, nothing really inspiring there, it look like a site from 20 years ago
The only word which comes to my mind after seeing this is "Red flag". It looks so lame and fake.
No dude, this is not a good general example.
First of all she’s a woman and women have it easier presenting themselves. If I would put my face on my portfolio, I would look really creepy, not everyone have good genes.
Then she’s working in a niche - again much more easier to sell yourself.
Lastly her works look like simple templates. Over $3k on that client website? Wow, that looks like a $700 design, seriously.
Here’s the secret of her success: she’s targeting a “bubble” with rich white women. She uses feminine colors and easy copy, perfect for her clients. She could easily add “baby shower websites” as her clients are into this kind of things.
So yes, she’s doing a good job but NO WAY this example applies to all freelancers.
Thank you. My reaction was 3000 for square space? Her target audience must be rich airheads.
Frankly, I don't think the portfolio sites really exist. This is why there are no hyperlinks to these sites. This isn't really a knock against the designer, but it is a cheat.
You didn't even tried to search right ? Just judging :(
Relax Grandpa, the websites are already live and you can check them out by googling them. She's done an excellent job at crafting them as well, just like her portfolio.
Next time, spend a couple of seconds to fact-check before spitting nonsense in the comments section!
Hi Scott, thanks for the feedback. I've edited each page to include links to the websites so you can find them easily. I will say though, I'm not against designing websites for fictional clients to build your portfolio!
@@danbeeshin love it how you take it as feedback! it shows you are smart. have a nice day :)
