  • This is the tour you have been waiting to see for over TWO YEARS now!!
If you have questions on anything we did not cover in the video, please leave a comment below and we'll do our best to get back to you on it.
Elements of Life is a 1983 Trisalu 37 aluminum cutter, that was build in Quebec. We purchased her in the fall of 2014, after she'd been sitting abandoned in a boat yard in Florida for over 10 years.
After sailing from the Azores, where we had been sitting when we bought her, we were able to see her for the first time in person in 2015, and moved her from storage to a work yard to begin a complete refit. Over the course of 2.5 years, we stripped this boat down to bare frames, and built her back out again, with the vision of her being the perfect cruising boat.
Everything in this boat, including the overhead, ceiling, floors, and all of the furniture, was built by the two of us. Fun bonus, we lived on the boat during the entire refit process.
She is currently set up as the perfect cruising boat for a couple, with a good sized galley, two main seating areas, a quarter berth (which we use for storage) and a murphy style bed for the v-berth which folds down into the forward salon as a queen size bed.
So far we have sailed her through the Caribbean, across the Atlantic Ocean, spent a wonderful 9 months with her in the Azores, and spent 2019 bringing her to the Arctic (via Norway) and down the coast of Scotland and England, where she is currently sitting.
Because we're looking to do another boat build, Elements of Life is now FOR SALE!!. If you have any interest in her, please follow this link to our website for her official listing.

Thanks for the great tour. It's clearly a boat where the owners did a better job (on the refit) than most commercial builders.

It's currently for sale in France at the moment. 😢 The person who bought it from us had never sailed before and was looking for a greener way to travel. I guess sailing northern latitudes with it was not for them.

I cant tell you how amazing i think that build is ... as someone who studied architecture and built and also just appreciates quality workmanship .. i have always appreciated the sailboat.. but getting to see the thoughtfulness put into every detail was so enjoyable ... the bedroom/forward salon is so versatile and useful for everyday living and quality sleeping ... i also enjoy the overbuild on the electronics and wiring .. better safe than sorry .. the care that you put into the vessel is so apparent that i know that when the time comes it will be sold quickly .. sell it to Brady and Bleu from Delos .. i hear they may be looking for a boat of their own one day .. THANK YOU so much for sharing and of course for sharing your adventure with us .. i watch because i have equilibrium issues that would never allow me to sail .. but i promise you i watch as often as time permits .. the life you live is inspirational and i wonder what jobs you had before hand that gave you the abilities to do such quality work .. the door episode may have been my all time favorite .. watching Matt build that thing for usefullness and security .. the architect Louis H. Sullivan coined the phrase "form follows function" in 1896 .. i think he would approve ... smooth sailing and I LOVE YOU TWO AND THIS CHANNEL ... sincerely Raymond

Love that boat. Sussed how the bed was done around 5 minutes before you unveiled it and I'm so impressed with the idea and it's execution. I'm a carpenter here in the UK, an oak frame carpenter (or housewright), and I have a very blocky style when I make anything so I really liked the woodwork because it is very traditional in it's strength and functionality. In fact, one of my design maxims is that form just looks correct to me when it follows function. Some decoration is cool, but simple, honest craftsmanship is what does it for me. So kudos.

First off, Outstanding tour of "Elements of Life" , with so many features that we had no idea existed! Matt really did do an fantastic design, with so much thought for ease-of-use along with perfect function. His skill as a craftsman is obvious everywhere you look, leaving no doubt that this boat is built to last. Using this as a marketing tool when it is listed officially, should truly help in a very fast sale! Oh yes, thanks for letting Georgie make an appearance too!

  • @bkackman

This was a great job of going through a highlighting the boat features and why you chose them. It was a fun throwback to a lot of the refit efforts, which was fun. You two have gotten so good at talking extemporaneously to the camera (us).
You shouldn't have too much trouble selling her (more likely before you're actually ready). You two put so much love, thought, and handcraft into all the features and she's beautiful.
Not too much longer and your should be back in the world and on the ocean.
    Thanks for the video.

Ok, I've got to say the best parts of this (and they were all excellent ) were the ways you accommodated kitty. That litter area is brilliant and wrapping the mast to make a scratching post is a great detail.

Your interior design and carpentry is amazing. You must have worked so hard. And to have lived on board during the refit must have been pretty difficult too. Congratulations on your achievement. I hope you enjoy your cat as much as this one. However, I find it difficult to imagine how you can top this!

    • @steveturansky9031
      @steveturansky9031 3 роки тому

The wiring does look very nice.
Having been a Electronics Service Engineer in part of my past, I would put bigger service loops on the wiring when you build the cat. That would enable you to cut and re-terminate wires if you have a problem down the line.
When I built my F-9A (31' tri), I also soldered the wires at the terminations (along with crimping and heat shrinking) to eliminate corrosion. I know this extra step is time consuming and a pain in the butt, but since launched in '93, I've had no electrical issues at those connections.

I watched you refit Elements and thought at the time this will be a boat for life or until maybe the family grows. But now you can tell Matt"s hands have been idle to long and itching to do something new. I still think you both are crazy. If I were a boat person I think Elements would be perfect for most any travels and y'all have proven that. It should sell itself. And Jessica my wife said you were so cute in that summer dress and I told her you are always cute. Y'all take care and good luck on this future adventure. We will be watching.

Absoutely gorgeous!!! The boat too, hahahaah!!! Matt and Jess you are the premier boat tour specialsit and boat refit deigners! Everything is so well thought out and laid out so very well I dont think anyone would change a thing if they purchased it. This is how every boat should be designed and fitted, I hope some of the big boys are paying attention to this expert craftmanship. I can see why Matt wants to get back to building, he is a master with wood and working with his hands. Two years building your own Cat from the ground up will be exciting to watch, and it will allow you to get your hands back to creating a quality boat and perhapes time to add to the boat kitty and maybe a surprise bun in the oven too. At least six popular channels in the past year now have new permant crew, on board; SV Delos, Nahoa, La Vagabond, Ran Sailing, Sailing Britaly, and Jessica and Ryan Adventures.

A worthy detailed tour of a well refitted boat, great design considerations and very good standards of craftsmanship especially the cabinetry and electrics puts this into a ‘peer less’ offering. You deserve to feel very proud of what you achieved. I sincerely hope you achieve your aspirational price or close to it, but there are more boats out there than buyers let’s hope prospective purchasers looking beyond the tag to the quality. My guess £60K.😉

Thanks. Keep in mind that metal boats typically do not require bulkheads, so sky is the limit for rearranging things around. I can't comment on the Pearson specifically, but for most glass boats it would require a pretty strong ring frame to be built to do a similar configuration without a forward bulkhead.
The 'windows' are 1/2" cast acrylic. We installed them in 2016, but there was a manufacturing issue and we got crazing almost instantly. The company warranted the replacement sheet, but we never wanted to disrupt the good seal we have to install the new pieces. They are just laying under the v-berth waiting.
      Matt

@@mattjohnson6716 sure, I expect 7' high almost 4"x4" uprights with 1/2" sheet ply knees bonded to the hull for the pilothouse, 4" deep floor beams. Older glass boats like this are single skin, since they didnt have the theory to know what thickness to apply they often use wood scantling sizes which is way over what is common today, so the fit at the time was of light formica bulkheads. My water line length is likely less but it looks like I benefit from a second collision bulkhead forward and partial bulkheads in places familiar to you in the saloon. It just might be easier to go galley up with a dinette a little larger than Elements. I might have to front up the scary money for toughened glass I think.
