These guys seem like great guys to meet and hang out with. I can't wait until I'm out there meeting other good people like this. Cool boat. Thanks for the video!
My Hunter 34 (34.5 feet long, almost 12 feet wide), has a port side aft-ish cabin, at the bottom of the companionway. It's what sold me on the boat. That cabin extends under the cockpit, for part of the berth. Ends, in front on an aft exterior locker. I'll be relocating a drain pipe, that sticks down 3 inches, just above the berth (it drains a shallow locker, that's over part of the berth area.
I'm interested in getting a Hunter 34. I read that there can be issues with bilge water getting stuck in the hull moldings and not draining away, creating "interesting" smells. Have you had this problem with your boat?
I have hull #10, 1986 S2-35C. I have only come across one other on the Chesapeake. It's quite easy to run your reefing lines back to the cockpit as I've done. I also added a strong track which makes getting the main up and down very easy. I fit 4 x 100 amp (Renogy) behind the back cushion closest to the stove. It's a tight fit, but it gets them out of the engine compartment and frees up all the space under the galley sink/counter. More importantly, closer to the breaker panel. I would love to see what you did for an anchor winch. I ended up installing a reel style winch from Lone Star Marine.
The problem with lots of locker space is you tend to accumulate a lot of unnecessary equipment . I used to tag stuff .if I didn't use it in a year it went out .
Ok, that looks like heaven to me. I'm spending my last career days doing CAD and champing at the bit to be sailing brains out. It's so cool to see that doing jobs in upholstery and fiberglass, etc., is a viable option. I also have many skills so I'm really glad to see that. Plus I'm curious now about how people are liking the Carribean and this boat tour with your destinations mapped out is great. I do mapping for a living, along with design and it looks so much more fun to me to be it than be just charting it out. Thanks so much!
Didn't know S2 made this boat. I have an 1980 S2 11c. Slightly bigger, somewht older. I have sailed SunShine solo from Florida(left in 2010) to the Philippines. Now in South Africa with crew, proparing to complete the Atlantic crossing and my second circumnavigation. Many similariets between the boats. I am sure this 35c could do what SunShine has done.
Very informative video. I liked the comparison commentary of a center cockpit vs aft cockpit boats. Also the trade offs on what to spend your money on: sails, anchors, batteries, solar panels, davits, etc. Nobody has an unlimited budget, it was good to hear what they each had to sacrifice and why. Lastly, I had no idea one can put a live aboard sailing vessel on a truck cross country! that could really come in handy. Thanks guys.

Ok after watching video I see know, that’s so awesome jay, love seeing updates on your journey.

I'm suddenly living in the Mediterranean, and it looks like I'll be here for years but I have zero knowledge of sailing. Amy pointers for a pure rookie much, appreciated.
If you go Lithium, be sure it's LiFePo4. The others can burn up, taking your boat with it. I decided, on my Hunter 34, to stick with lead-acid, move them closer to the centerline, just behind the motor (better balance to keep it upright. I have the shallow draft version), with anti-sulphators on each one (the potted kind, that only desuphate, when the battery is being charged.
Great show. Love the boat, looking for something similar in the next few years. I'm in Puerto Rico of you need an extra hand from a retired electrical engineer that loves to be on the water.

27:23 respectfully: His rigging appears to be SS which doesn't show its wear to the naked eye; I know first hand from bad experience and parting turnbuckles that had cracks I couldn't see during my spring inspection. The boat was then sailed only on the great lakes too -but kept in Port near a nuclear power plant with a railroad almost directly overhead: The iron rail dust significantly contributed to the SS corrosion and subsequent brittleness/crazing. If your SS rigging is 10 years old and you are looking to do any serious offshore sailing.... REPLACE IT ALL! I Almost lost my mast on silly little Lake Huron in a micro burst because I failed to do a UV dye/fluorescence inspection. Great job as always! Would love to buddy boat with you guys one day! What software/app do you use to show the mapping? Ive seen Huub use it too, it's great for voice over B roll. Fair winds!
I learned so much from you. You are a very eloquent guide/host. If possible I would love to crew and learn how to captain a boat from someone like Jay who knows all the skills. Is it possible to crew for one to two months? Please let me know what my financial responsibilities will be. Thank you
I really don't think Dan was being harsh about this boat at all. Nothing is perfect, embrace the flaws ;) Saying that I actually love this boat it really packs a lot into a small space and I absolutely love the turn around at the back of the interior, makes it feel a lot bigger. Is it a full Keel?
It's a very nice sailboat, with impressive mileage, and would be a viable option for me.... for the tropics. But my cruising/exploring goals involve the waters of the Pacific Northwest and up to and around Alaska, and I don't think I could trust anything but an aluminum hull in those waters.
Boats that are 33-35' are just about perfect for 1 person to sail alone. Just enough room inside that you can feel comfortable, nice headroom, decent head and galley. But the sails are not so big that you can't handle them alone. 37-40 foot boats are harder to handle alone and too much boat for 1 person in adverse conditions.

If you're still out at sea find you a spot and park for awhile tell everyone you know shit is getting ready to hit the fan as far as the weather goes something is happening and it isn't going to be so pretty this weather is weird something big is getting ready to happen please park for awhile.
I was so against a center cockpit at first. But for livability it's the way to go. I would normal agree with you about center cockpits should be 40 foot and larger. S2 did such a great job on the layout of this boat. I have more liveable space the a lot of 40 foot aft cockpit boat. Every boat has things you wish you could change.
I personally am looking for a center cockpit sailboat and I'm gonna be a solo sailer. I really love Jay's boat. Wish it was a 40 to 45 footer. But it is still a very nice boat.
I really enjoyed the video. Great interview. I am a beginning sailor having had some experience when I was younger and I am considering doing some solo sailing. But I definitely need a lot more experience in some education. How would I find somebody to sale with for a short time? I am currently based in the Philippines.
Jay is a very patient and tolerant person.

Total answered a question i had about wether or not you cross the Panama Canal
i prefer boats with comfort ratio of above 30 at least. capsize ratio is doable below 2.0, not a bad looking boat though.

I’ve heard Jay’s name way too many times today. Could make a drinking game out of it I guess.

You're drinking too much Coca-Cola Jay.
Why tow it when the Panama Canal is right there?
Right there is more than 5000nm from where I'd be starting by trailer.
Have anchor machine? Or is at hand?
Thanks
It's electric.
Great video, please consider letting future guests talk more and not talking over them so much.
Jay is a close friend, and I've shown him comments like this. He disagrees. We needed to keep the interview short. So that's how we shot it.
sooooo how much is it????
I reckon you 2 are more than both just boat buddies?
Yes, we're good friends. :)
Does anybody did count how many times he said Jay?

How much does it cost?
It's a secret.
Is it me or did he do a remarkable job managing to produce a video solely about Jay's boat but make it all about him...
I try. :)

When using lfp you use 100 % of your battery and it will outlive most of your boat. Also you can use it upside down or at any angle.
Good to know.
A very practical tour and well structured. Thank you! How can one contact Jay for canvas work?
Great job as always! Would love to buddy boat with you guys one day! What software/app do you use to show the mapping? Ive seen Huub use it too, it's great for voice over B roll. Fair winds!
Thanks, I use travelboost.
I learned so much from you. You are a very eloquent guide/host.
If possible I would love to crew and learn how to captain a boat from someone like Jay who knows all the skills.
Is it possible to crew for one to two months?
Please let me know what my financial responsibilities will be.
Thank you
I'll let Jay know. He'd be a great teacher for you
I really don't think Dan was being harsh about this boat at all. Nothing is perfect, embrace the flaws ;) Saying that I actually love this boat it really packs a lot into a small space and I absolutely love the turn around at the back of the interior, makes it feel a lot bigger. Is it a full Keel?
Exactly right, and Jay feels the same. :) No it is not a full keel.
Why don't you cross oceans? Like sail to French Polynesia? I am just curious as you have a nice, capable boat.....
He is planning on doing that. There is just a lot of nice places to stop by first.
what do all these guys do for a living to be able to afford living on a boat and sailing all the time?
😅
It varies for everyone, but it helps to reduce your expenses as much as possiable.
Why does he keep comparing it to HIS boat? We don't give a f**k about your boat, just tell us about Jay's boat.
Because we're friends who don't have thin skin.
It's a very nice sailboat, with impressive mileage, and would be a viable option for me.... for the tropics. But my cruising/exploring goals involve the waters of the Pacific Northwest and up to and around Alaska, and I don't think I could trust anything but an aluminum hull in those waters.
A boat like this would be fine in those conditions. You don't need a metal boat.
Good to see both of you, gentlemen!
Hey, thanks!
I want to ask both of you if you think there is any difference/advantage btw center vs aft cockpit for solo sailing?
Yes there is.
Indeed!
my boat, my boat, my boat... Why don't you just discuss Jay's boat since we can't see yours.
You can see the tour of my boat on my channel....
Exactly. Notice the z generation:and most,. it's all about me...too spoilt and 'U S' self centred. LIVE in happy, gracious, content, peaceful, countrys with much LESS, to learn graciousness. US has a big EGO problem.(insecurity)fear nieve children. We shake our heads.Wake up.😮.love❤ light and much laughter😊
Such an informative video. You both should be proud of the content this video has. This gave me so much information, food for thought and entertainment.
Have a C30 '82, great video, big motivator for me to get her Bristol fashioned, she looks good Captain!
Right on!
If you're still out at sea find you a spot and park for awhile tell everyone you know shit is getting ready to hit the fan as far as the weather goes something is happening and it isn't going to be so pretty this weather is weird something big is getting ready to happen please park for awhile.
Hahahaha
Dude that was cringe .. what a patient and tolerant man. .. he couldn’t get a word in lol
Thanks for watching my video. 😀
Great video; thanks for showing us your home. Personally, I wouldn't put a center cockpit on anything below a 40.
Right on.
What panels is he using as it is very hard to find that much wattage in just two panels??
180w panels.
Not sure why you need to compare to your boat all the time
Because it is a comparison video.
@@Adventureman_Dan so full of shit
Nice boat Forshore I Like the Centre Coptit ,that keel Stepped mast is bullet Proof If your Rigging ever Fails , At Least the Mast Won"t come down
I personally am looking for a center cockpit sailboat and I'm gonna be a solo sailer. I really love Jay's boat. Wish it was a 40 to 45 footer. But it is still a very nice boat.
Youll always want a bigger boat!
@@Adventureman_Dan yeah, it's a guy thing. But I heard many people say don't go over 45 feet if you're gonna solo sail. It gets harder to control.
Dude is just pointing out pros and cons to both boats it’s not that deep people lol
Yep
We sail a Westerly Seahawk 34. And we love the center cockpit and the aft cabin.
I'm looking to downsize to an S2 9.2C. I think they have an amazing layout
First time seeing y’all and I really enjoyed the tour and conversation.
Glad you enjoyed!
I live aboard mostly in the UK at anchor for 6 years. Less than a week alongside. Good tips to possible future crusing areas. Thanks
i love the S2's and my second sailboat was a S2 9.2c
Seems like a great boat!
I really enjoyed the video. Great interview. I am a beginning sailor having had some experience when I was younger and I am considering doing some solo sailing. But I definitely need a lot more experience in some education. How would I find somebody to sale with for a short time? I am currently based in the Philippines.
