Part 14:
I cut down dead pine trees that are on my 40 acre property to build a sugar shack that will house a maple sap boiler so we can enjoy some delicious maple syrup in the spring.
With the help of my chainsaw, I'll cut down all the overgrown and shaded out dead pines which I will cut into log to build a sugar shack. The pines in this replanted forest are fat too overgrown and have been grossly mismanaged. The trees should have be cut and thinned nearly a decade ago. Removing the dead trees is a good start to rehabilitating the forest. Later, we will thin even more and get the forest ready for replanting and rejuvenating.
In this part, we continue to build the walls of the log cabin while we boil maple syrup. But the end, we will have our walls framed out and the beginnings of our roof structure.
I will use the butt-and-pass method which laps one row of logs over the other, while fastening the logs together with spikes. This is simpler and quicker because it does not require the tedious work of scribing each log and notching.
A butt-and-pass corner joint on a log home creates the look of a rustic, old-fashioned cabin. As the logs are laid to create the outside corners of the building, the first log on each layer extends past the corner, and the log forming the other wall butts into the first. As the timbers are laid to build up the corner, the extended logs alternate for an effect that resembles interlaced fingers.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
This, coming from a 69 yr old woman, is really an awesome site to spend time with. I love your sense of humor and your originality! Does Don have larengitis!?! I hardly ever hear him speak.
Don is like the Al or Wilson characters on that old TV show with Tim Allen as "Tim the Tool Man Taylor". They are both quiet and full of wisdom only speaking when necessary to impart tid bits of inspiration.
This is my favourite thing on UA-cam currently.
That's one of the keys to effective progress is knowing when to take a break and stop taking the break.
Stopping the break is why I usually just kill myself to finish something. Hahaha.
A video coming out mid week? Keep up the good work.
Lol love it “swearing in the Forrest with Kevin” love your vids !!!
Yo Kevin, the interaction between you and your Brother is a truly entertaining thing to behold, never had a Brother and after seeing you and yours have concluded that it will be just another experience I missed in my life. Thanks for the good times.
Thank you!!! Perfect balance of instruction, inspiration, and entertainment 👍
Yay, we had an extra video!! I LOVE watching you guys, awesome work as always 😍😍😍
Love your videos. Both the things you build and you as a host!
We need a 30 min video on Don: the man , the myth, the legend
Yessss
Please!
Of course we love the progress guys, and that Maple Syrup is looking awfully YUMMY, thanks Kevin!!!!
Another wonderful, woodsy therapy session! 👏🏻☺️
Therapy session? That doesn’t sound right, but...something like that! Always entertaining, informative, and oddly relaxing. ☺️
OMG, I've been wanting you to call it a Cabin au sucre this whole series. Thank you.
It's called a "Cabane à sucre", at least in Quebec :)
@@fairladyttz567 Merci. Je m'escuse!
Looking good bud! I'm interested to see how you vent all the steam, and how you deal with the moisture on the inside of the roof.. More videos please thank you!
This is why I watch. thanks to all 3 of you guys. Your worth watching thanks again
Love the mid week vlog, 2 vids a week would be awesome!
Awesome work as always. Don is such a great friend.
I’ve been watching your channel for quite some time now. You have inspired me to start my own channel. It’s been slow moving but I am enjoying the journey. Thank you very much.
The SAP Shack is on track to be pumping out maple syrup. Great team work guys.
I hope Don gets compensated for all his help! At least a big bucket of syrup!
I,m sure he does
While you guys worry about the details... Don's getting the job done! Go Don!
Excited to see this progress! What a feat, those huge heavy logs!!
Super great community!
Bless you all!

I think Canadian Woods swearing is different than Texas swearing. Bless your heart.
Merci d'avoir partagé tes connaissances de la langue française avec nous...un abonné québecois 😉
I love this channel bro . watching from houston tx . thank you for being respectful and kid friendly it means a lot .
Through me off, thought there was a time warp and I lost 3 days. Turns out it is still Wednesday (2021 not 1992 like I was hoping) and we got bonus footage. I feel shame now and have to go do some real work at my place so my wife doesn't think you are outworking me. Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work.
Looking good guys! Btw, if you take the bark off before you raise the roof logs, they're lighter and done.
Kev loving the progress well done to all of you ... can’t wait for next up date xx
MMM Syrup !
Ever put it on ice cream ?
Thank You for sharing your video, and letting us hang out.
Yes! it's good on everything!
Like the process. And maple syrup looks good.
Having 3 other brothers and seeing people all over with siblings, I've always noticed it's always your siblings that call you out when they think you're double dipping.
Thanks for the great video/content. Congratulations on your success! I'm (always) impressed with your progress in each video. Also - thanks for giving back to your community by hiring a young intern (Don). I've not seen a harder working 20 year old.
I was already impressed by your channel, but today I scolled down down down the long long list of comments, ALL OF WHICH YOU ARE READING! AMAZING JOB MY FRIEND.
Thanks!
BONUS VIDEO! awesome, love you guys, keep it up!
Everyone needs a Don in their life!
that is a book in the making...
i had a Don in my life but unfortunatly he passed Dec 16th :(
@@pitbull_top5766 so sorry
Très bon ton français, à quand un vidéo en français LOL. Your maple syrup looks very good.
Great work again guys. I wish I had a friend like Don offering his hand when needed in constructions.
Was surprised to see the video today
Can't wait until it's done. Almost there I guess. Looking more like maple syrup now. Cabin is looking great
jurant dans la forêt avec Kevin! vous êtes fous lol Thanks for sharing another awesome video with us all.. you guys are crazy lol.. love the banter between you. This is turning into one rustic nice cabin build :)
Elle est magnifique votre cabane a sucre!
Cool stuff. 👍
Really like la canbane a sucre! Amazing work you guys are like modern day bucheron/coureurs des bois
That sugar cabin, is a massive build. Heavy too. Definitely be there for yrs and yrs. looking fantastic!! Double Dip. Lol 😂 Love Chris’s comment 😎. Great work! Definite payoff yr by yr, + the memories are everything, cheers 👍
The sugar shack is coming along nicely, as brother Chris said, " liquid gold" is looking good, can't wait for your next episode, keep living the dream, until then, peace my brother.
What is this?!?! A mid week clip ❤️! Thanks Kevin
Enjoy
The Sugar Factory Continues. Looking good guys. I am impressed at how much sap is being reduced, My western maple trees are tiny so i have never seen sap in that volume.
12" in diameter is all you need I think..
@@ModernSelfReliance Our Douglas Maple here in BC get maybe 10" diameter, I have tapped them and harvested a couple gallons, but its like squeezing lemon peels for liquid. Not much juice comes out.
Awesome what you guys have done, very inspiring . I myself am starting our off grid homestead in the high desert of Arizona, gonna bring green to the desert. Keep up the great work !!!
I’m always happy when you do a video because you are so upbeat and doing very interesting things you are one of my favorite UA-camr 👍
Great looking shack. It will also be a great place to try drying a ham - especially since the boiler can be adapted to a cold/low heat smoker.
glad to see you back at it after the recharge nice progress
Most comments say they need a Don in their life. Not me, I need a Kevin in my life..need the positive, humorous, hardworking, creative and full of life attitude. Don’t get me wrong though, Don seems like an awesome friend. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks Zara! I was beginning to think I should just hand over the channel to Don. ;-)
Never!
Blessings!

Great progress, looks very professional with such a challenging building material. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Building staging is the job within the job lol. As a member of a long line of masons I am all to aware of the hard work involved in building staging haha
My thought for today's video: Don is a beast! Great to see you all in the video!
Great video! The sugar shack is looking awesome.
Bonjour! Guten Tag! and Good Day!! Great Job guys!!
Excellent video. Excellent looking maple sirop.
Happy Wednesday... nice to see you it made my day
The sun light hits that thing nice...I think you need skylights in it if you don't build a loft. Boy I bet Don has huge arms he smokes them rods in. Keep up the hard work we all need some syrup lol.
When the sun shines.. the forest is magical.
Love this!!!!!🥰💖 Stay safe! Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family.👍
Oh my gosh...sorry to hear about the wood being *heavy*. And I said it before, it's all hard work, sweetie. Aren't you glad Dan or Don, is there to keep you company and working ❤ together. Congrats 👏👏👏 for collecting 50containers of sap...yeah more maple syrup anyone??? And the *sugar-shack* looks promising!!! And with the roof is angled and being *triangle*, it can be converted as an attic, that's how I see it...good job 👍👍👍sweetie ❤ ❤💋💋
I watched the Amish do many things and they are smart honest hardworking people here and I love the fresh eggs and butter with all the raw honey and syrups fresh made on the farm and sold out of the back room at the country Amish store.
Good stuff always good videos
Don's retirement village. LOL
Love this video, that syrup for sure needs to reduce a bit more but I am amazed at how well it's coming along! Just think of all the pancakes you'll be making soon. :P
You guys are doing great getting this cabin done. It's going to be a solid structure in the end for sure.
WOW....that alot of hard work.......good your good guys!!! verry beautifull... vraiment belle votre cabane a sucre Kevin... and salutation a to Don!!
Thanks 👍
Starting to look like a proper cabin. Syrup looking good. Full stop.
That's a true bud! Go Don! and.. Go Jets Go!
Lovely progress.
Great weather lately
I just want to suck on the cheese cloth 🤣🤣🤣 I’ve never had pure maple syrup, only Aunt Jemima, and now watching this…. I NEED real maple syrup!! Great job guys.
LMAO!
NICE la cabane à sucre est finit...almost no accent 😃👌👌
We are going to gable the ends by stacking congruent logs and placing support beams at appropriate levels to achieve our desired roof pitch. Or something...
We needed you Wes, those are just enough, but not too many words!
@@TheWoodedBeardsman Had I been there it would have been rated R lol.
Awesome watching you !!!!!
Always an interesting watch. Thanks
I don’t know how much you’re paying Don, but it’s not enough 😆 always enjoy your videos!
Another great video Kevin! You really do need to do a video on Don. ... Happy Easter.
I'm glad I finally saw the drill being used for pilot holes. I was sitting here the whole time wondering how strong you guys were using rebar as nails. Wondering if you maybe sharpened the ends or something. The drill makes sense lol.
We "Graduated" to drilling pilot holes...
OMG. Do you pre-drill at all for your rebar “nails”? Real Men at work!!!
Things are gettin sweeter all the time haha 😎👍🏻
Love the video's!
Just recently found these brothers channels, and cannot get enough. Guilty pleasure binge watching their videos. Can someone point me to a video where they talk about the property? (either of the brothers channels, I follow both) Sometimes, it sounds like they own it, and other times not?
If either havent talked about it maybe a video about it please?! :D Cheers
I own the property. I think the video that we originally talk about it doesn't exist anymore.
@@ModernSelfReliance Ahhh, thank you for responding at least!!!
Looking good 👍
Kevin, you and Don need to order the #3 rebar nail gun from Hitachi... don't forget to add a few drops of oil everyday and oh, set the compressor at 500 psi! 😆 BTW, you'll need a gallon of CBD oil to go with the Tylenol-Advil cocktail, it's legal, yeah know!!
Good Morning guys
Fascinating I’m lo0king forward to seeing how the building turns out. The maple syrup looks yummy! So do you worry about those log footers rotting out?
They are cedar and very resilient to rotting.
apparently, according to @Joe and Zach survival, the best depth to keep the stop boiling at is 2 in. this allows the bubbles from the bottom to keep the most amount of heat as they push through the thickness of the sap to the top.
Cabin looks flawless !👍👍
Woo Hoo! Early vlog this week!! Awesome!
Good job fellas
Wow, Saturday snuck right up on me... 🤔
Don't we all wish that? 😁
Sweet! It looks like a log cabin. Where is the fireplace?
Now we need to see built next to the sugar shack A Kevin McCheeseSauageandEgg Shack. Sugar Shack is looking awesome. Cant wait to see the final build with wood fired Maple Sugar syrup pan and burner installed. Was wondering are you goin to leave the floor dirt or are you doing a wood floor?? God bless be safe stay warm. Jim
Thanks James!
I think more people need a Don in their lives. And a Kevin. possibly a WB and a maple sap boiler. :probably a drainage culvert or two.
At 6:40 Kevin loves messing with Chris 🤣
It doesn't end...as it shouldn't :)
Your craftsmanship is amazing we think alike I was in renovation where you have to think outside the box what’s the one word in Reno might as well more then one word
Here they are well we done this much might as well or we come this far might was or we come this far might as well
Good to see your Brother helping, and glad to see you using dead trees, and used rebar.
I filter out the bark before I boil down the sap. But just like you, I filter once more to remove the sediment. Do you get any sediment? FULL STOP!
swearing in the woods with Kevin episode lol good stuff
That’s pretty cool
