- In this video I show how easy it is to rejuvenate your tired old mint plant and encourage it to grow lots of fresh new leaves. This works best in midsummer, but can be done at most times of year except winter and late autumn.

there is nothing more satisfying than watching healthy plant growth on time lapse
3-4 weeks ago, I decided to try this with my very poor-looking, leggy mint. I cut it ALL down, all the way to the ground. As of today, I have 5 small, beautiful, lush mint plants bursting through the soil in all corners of the pot. THANK YOU for saving my plant!!
I came here because I did the same but it won't grow again and i don't know what to do
@@IcarianGreenWings How long has it been since you cut it down? Was it completely dead when you did? No green leaves whatsoever and only brown sticks? It took a few weeks for mine to come crawling back.
@@rafaltruszkowski2751 yeah, it completely died down. It was good, but i was moving and put it on a bit too dark place in the new apartment so it died down. Then i cut it down and put on the window and watered daily. It's been a few weeks but it still hasn't regrown. Maybe it's because summer is over?
@@IcarianGreenWings if you're desperate, you can always dig into the soil with your 🖐️ and see what's up! Inspect the roots, see if any new shoots are coming up. If you are watering it daily, it might be too wet! You shouldn't water it until the top two inches of the soil are very dry. Also, make sure your pot has drainage. Otherwise your bottom of the pot will retain all that water, and the roots will rot in that underground pool.
@@truszko91 ohhhh that might have been a mistake too. I always thought mint needed a lot of water so I made sure it had plenty. I really hope i didn't kill it off completely.
Thank you so much for your advice and lesson. I will know for the future! 🙏
Omg the time lapse makes my day 😊 thank youuuuuuu
Indra Yudha Kusuma, I'm with you on that!
Im new to gardening and I’ve been trying to keep my new mint plant alive ...it has “died” twice but keeps regrowing 🤔...watching you cutdown you’re plant I was like 😳...then watching your time lapse I was like 🤯...awesome video!... thanks you for sharing 😌💕
Time lapse made me realize how truly beautiful it is. Thank you🖤
Glad you enjoyed the time lapse.
Nothing like giving your mint a crew cut 😉😂
Time Lapses are f'kin cool. +10000 points for sharing Time Lapse growth with us.
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the time lapse, if you want to see more I have made several time lapse videos on my channel.
Thanks for the video and it is especially cool with the time lapsed part! I just got my first pot of peppermint and gardening is totally new to me. Your sharing just gave me complete confidence to “cut it all off and let it regrow”! Thank you!
Man, your videos are the most perfect thing, please never stop doing it!
I'm new with growing things and this made me feel so much better. Now that's its summer I thought mine had no chance 🤩
THANK YOU MY PLANT IS JUST THE SAME.YOU ARE A LIFE SAVER.GOD BLESS YOU FOR THE TRUTH.
Great timelaps too prove that it works!
This is such a common problem. We appreciate the helpful tips!
Your time lapse videos are amazing :) going to prune my struggling mint right now.
Wow. A lot of work was put into this video. Thank you!!
🤗🤗🤗
How to revive dying mint: try to kill it.
Hey, as long as it worked
Lol😂
I succeeded 80%. Now I've changed my mind 😁
I'm gonna go trim my mint plant tomorrow ! Can you feed it worh a tomatoes feed?
@@saymabegum4514 yup! It should be fine!
Simple and straightforward, thank you!
Very helpful and the time lapse was an appreciated bonus
Holy shit. This time lapse was incredible. That's your competitive advantage against other tubers. WOW! Thank you :)
I GASPED when you just chopped it All off !
haha wow nice recovery tho
Literally same I was like "you want me to wahhhhh???"
My mint was COVERED in mold. I tried to kill the mold with peroxide and eventually garlic but no dice. Only thing that fixed it was cutting it down to the bottom baby leaves and it's grown back in full.
Nice video - love the time lapse.
Great timelapse man! Thanks
Time lapse was so satisfying 😍
Beautiful! Thank you!
Thanks! Love this video!
Loved the timelapse!
The time lapse is soo satisfying 😊
thank you for the vid. I just had my first mint and it looks dry and tired even when I watering them twice a day. almost breaking my heart when I saw you cut your mint, but to see them growing again.... wow.
maybe I should cut mine down too.
Did it work?
Thank you for your time and effort on this.
Thanks, I hope it was helpful.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video
Well done & thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm glad to have this video, I overhandled the mint I harvested so the bits I tried to transplant as insurance in case the parent dies from the frost... Well their leaves are all curling up and even the stem is weak and thing
Mind it also looks like the parent is so stubborn that it took the frost and grew a few inches within days despite that
This was awesome and timely thankyou
Thank you! I enjoyed your video!
Thank you because of this trick i was able to regrow again my mint that is almost dying, so i cut all the stem all the way to the ground and start feeding it as you shown in the video with the help of the good sunlight every morning and cow manure i got result good after 5 days a new sprout starting to pop out 😁👍
I'm glad your mint plant is recovering, the new shoots are a little slow at first, but after a few days they will speed up and after a few weeks you should have lots of healthy leaves again.
Wow amazing! Good to know, thanks.
Lovely time lapse. Tk u
Wow amazing how tough this plant is thank you for the advice ❤
Thanks, yes mint is a very resilient plant.
Very helpful. Thank you.
thank you ! I accidentally parched my mint plant as I was camping and not home to water it hopefully I can get her back
Great video thank you.
thanks garden at 58 North. Very informative
What exactly do you feed your mint, could you link me to your products you use?
This seems like decent advice, gonna try it on my struggling mint plant, hope it works!
Good luck, at this time of year it should come back with healthy new growth in a few weeks.
Going to try this with my oregano! Thanks.
wow,, I used to chuck them out... amazing! Next time I'll trim them down!
Good luck with your next mint plant, hopefully it will bounce back for you after a cut back.
Thank you so much for the tip! Just found your channel today, now I finally know how to fix my mint:)
Thanks, I hope your mint is recovering well.
Many thanks.
Good video Thanks
Amazing!
Thank you! I am going to try this right now.
Good luck with your mint, if it's currently winter in your part of the world you may find it takes a little longer to come back, but it should look great when spring arrives.
@@Gardeningat58N it's winter, but I have a growing light, it's been 5 days and the leaves are sprouting.
It came back leggy again, not bushy like yours. I don't think she likes my growing light.
Thank you!!😁
thanks for video
That time laps tho😍
Wow thanks for this..
Awsome vid
beautiful
I just pinch once the mint gets about 3-4 inches. That way it's always producing and bugs won't get to it as it's healthy. Also your plant may be root bound so it needs a bigger pot new dirt and it will be beautiful once again. Great vid ☺️
Are you just miss hettie helpful 😵💫😑
This great and amazing, سبحان الله
I’ve had my mint plant for over a year and I grew it from seeds so I must say I’m quite attached. Lately it hasn’t been doing well at all and I’ve tried everything I can think of. This is my last ditch attempt at saving it.
I’ll add an update with how it goes.
Mint usually needs to be dormant once a year to grow well, cutting it back and leaving it somewhere cold for a few weeks should give it the dormancy it needs. Then bring it back to a warm location and it should grow well. Mint is usually dormant over winter so you might find it doesn't grow well again until spring.
@@Gardeningat58N Thanks for telling me, this is super helpful advice! Means a lot that you’d come back to an old video just to answer a comment.
Hey how often do you water your plant ? Every week? Warm or cold water?
Is your mint ok?
omg thank you for this video!!!!
Your welcome
Thanks for this, I’ve killed 2 or 3 mint plants from
Home Depot and I’m determined not to let this one die! I’ll cut back and fertilize it tomorrow!
Good luck with your mint, hopefully this one survives.
Great video I love the time lapse it really makes your video stand out from the rest. It is one thing for people to tell you how something will work it is another to see the results in this way. I have subscribed as a result of this thank you.
Thanks for subscribing, I'm glad you enjoyed the time lapse, I try to include a time lapse in my videos when I can.
Gardening at 58 North can you tell us if you kept your mint inside or outside to regrow?
@@tkeen7594 I had it inside as I was filming the time lapse, but mint usually does better when grown outside.
Thank you! I had just bought some mint & it was doing really well in outdoor containers until we had a heat wave. Perhaps I should have brought them inside? I thought I'd killed them, but your video makes me appreciate just how tough these plants are! Is it ok to have several different kinds of mint in one pot?
DAAAAAMN I wish mine was that lush. I gotta wait for so long before I can make my drink
If you follow the instructions in this video your mint should look the same within a month or two.
Thank you, this is very useful! --A gardening noob
Thanks, I'm glad you found it useful, good luck with your mint plant, they grow best in spring time so you should notice it recover very well.
3 weeks!!?? 😲😲😲
Impressive.
thanks
Time-lapse creeps me out so thoroughly and also fascinates me because we dont see it moving... but it is....
soooo cooool
Thank you for the video!
You said you a good feeding would do good..what kind of fertilizer/nutrient did you use?
Thank you
How can I make my plants grow as fast as they did in the time-lapse?
Wow
This is one great restoration video, Thankyou for sharing it with us.
How much water do these mints need and when to water its time to water it?
Thanks, Mint likes lots of water, make sure the soil is damp at all times, it hates to dry out. Just make sure any excess water can drain out if its in a pot so it isn't waterlogged.
Thank you for your reply, much appreciated 🙏
This was really good North! I had a mint plant my housemates used all of the leaves for mahitos I tried to revive it but had no luck! Next time ill cut it right back :)
*Mojitos
I wish the same thing happened to my hair whenever I went to the barber's!
Regarding mint, I planted a strawberry mint a few weeks ago in a piece of poor land and the plant is green in the top leaves but the lower leaves have a bronze tinge. I wonder if this is the normal state as it grows or whether I ought to water in the current warm weather please?
I know mint is supposed to be "bomb proof" but I am not brave enough to find out if it is "me proof!"
Hey, thanks! awesome vid! I'm having the exact same issue with the exact same plant, now my question is, how about watering while the plant is re-growing? any advice on that? I'm willing to try this, just not sure how to water it :) Thanks!
So I need 3 pots to have one ready for every weekend party (Ok 4 just in case). Nice
is your plant indoor? do you have a grow light ?
I need help with my apple mint, but first; The time lapse was phenomenal, including the silk worm or spider that created the web). Thanks so much for that. Now, what if you accidentally got some borax on a leaf and didn't see it until it killed most of the foliage. I rinsed the entire plant thoroughly, cut all the foliage off and see new growth on ONE side of the plant. This is an "apple mint" plant and I am in love and driven to save it. They're all sold out or I'd just buy anther one. Can't beat the flavor... favorite mint ever! Please help. Should I cut out the dead roots? Idk... I'm new at growing food this year. Have been happily working my tush off in the garden. :oD
Thank you for the information and the video. I appreciate it. Are you using a grow light? If yes, what kind, name, watts. Thank you.
I'm glad you found my video useful. Yes I'm using a small grow lamp, the one I'm using has a pure white light and fits in a usual desk lamp, the reason I use this kind is because the desk lamp concentrates the light in a small area, the white light is good for making time lapse videos as it doesn't have any colour tint, also the lamp is low power to save on my electric bills. I use a compact fluorescent bulb with a ses e14 fitment. The bulb is 20 watts and has a light temperature of 6500k which is simmilar to daylight. Here is a link to it www.amazon.co.uk/MiniSun-Energy-Saving-Daylight-Spiral/dp/B00CS38J82/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1505981628&sr=8-6&keywords=grow+bulb+cfl
If you want to grow plants under grow lamps this bulb is ideal for individual small plants, and I have had great results with it as you can see in this video, but if you have large plants or a number of plants you would certainly need much more powerful bulbs with a higher lumen output.
What type of feed is best for this? Mine is in worse shape, mine gotten scorched and it's almost burnt to a crisp I'm just hoping transplanting it would help it but I don't know the best way to transplant these things to see what would even help to a bigger container it's 100% rootbound with a thick runners you're talking about
What nutrients mint plant needs for its healthy growth. My mint plants are just drying even though i water then regularly.
I pulled up a Mint plant in my yard and transplanted it in a potter. After one day I realized that wouldn’t work. So I clipped all the stems and put them in water to propagate it. I’m still waiting for the roots to grow after one week.
Thank you thank you thank you was just the video I was looking for😊 my mint plant was sad looking n I was scared to prune them to the bottom... now I'll dare to cut them
They should grow back well, if you live somewhere with cold winters and the plant is outdoors it may not fully regrow until spring as mint is usually dormant over the winter months.
@@Gardeningat58Nthank you for replying 😊no we don't have that harsh winters in the UAE. But I did prune the mint plant quite a lot but the stems are too thin... is it OK to use NPK fertilizer for mint n other herbs
@@Linda_Meyn If your in the UAE then it should grow over winter as well as summer. But as it's not a tropical plant it probably won't last more than two years in a warm climate as it needs a winter dormancy period at least once a year to grow well. Yes NPK fertiliser is fine, look for one with a higher N level than P and K as the higher Nitrogen levels will encourage bigger leaves.
@@Gardeningat58N thank you👍🏻😊
Good idea
What is the best environment for them? Mine is growing weak and leggy because I put it on a shade, but now I thought of putting it on direct sunlight. Can you give me some advice?
I have a spearmint plant and it's my first time to have a plant to take care of. I don't know why it just died the next day I bought it from an herb garden. But I'm afraid to cut the remaining fresh leaves just like what you did.
If its died that quickly then it's probably due to lack of water. I would give it a good watering and see if it perks up, if it doesn't after two days then cut off all the dead and wait a couple of weeks to see if it regrows. Mint likes to be kept damp at all times, but don't have it sitting in water.
whatt grow light are you using ?
Is it full sun or shade?
Where can I place it after cutting it down? Thanks!!
Hello, what kind of feed do you recommend? Can i just top off with compost or need something stronger? Thank you
If I plant a mint in the spring and it has a couple of freezing nights would it survive? Also when is the best time to plant Mint? spring is sometimes unpredictable on weather
Did you use grow lights for this, and if so what kind?
Did you thrw away the cuttings .? mint is just as good as when dried as when its green
What did u feed it with?
It's impressive how well it grows. Almost like weeds.
I'm wondering if I can do that with my parsley as well 🤔 when it turns yellow ?
Love the time laps !
You should be able to do the same to parsley, I've done it a few times, it works but not quite as well. Also parsley is biennial so after a year or two it will flower and die, but cutting all the leaves off can reduce the chance of this and you can sometimes get an extra year from the plant. Its got a thick tap root a bit like a small carrot, so it normally has a lot of energy stored ready to regrow its leaves.
Gardening at 58 North Thank you !
Does this also work with a really really big woody plant? My mint is huge but I think it has rust :(
When you say give a nice feed, what exactly do you use to "feed" this mint? or even other herbs
For mint you can use houseplant feed or a balanced feed. For most other herbs I would use a balanced/multipurpose feed. A feed which is high in nitrogen encourages lots of lush leaves so avoid tomato feed.
Am about to try this.
Il come back with a testimony i hope.
You should notice results within a few weeks.
How’d it go? Planning to do the same with my very sparse mint plant.
Hello can I do this with spearmint??
Everything I've ever tried to grow has either never sprouted or died after a few weeks. I'm going to try this method to save my poor little mint plant that's headed down the same path.
What is the black spots on my mint plant? Should I cut it all back?
My mint plant is dead. Are you able to do the same method to grow it again?
