From a South African, we're not taking this game lightly or disrespecting England for a second. Whereas a team like Ireland tend to perform at a much lower level in WC circumstances, England do the opposite. I think I speak for many South Africans when I say I'm incredibly nervous about tomorrow night.

Well it was much closer than I anticipated and I dared to dream until Pollard scored that penalty. I’m proud of the boys, they showed up in a way they haven’t for 2 years, pushed the Boks all the way showed that they’re recent showings aren’t who they actually are. Pride restored. Congratulations SA, now go beat the ABs.

I would love England to win, but I just don't think we stand a chance. We haven't shown anything for 2 years that would suggest we're even on a similar level to SA, so to imagine England could turn over SA who are playing excellent rugby is fanciful.

It's tough to calibrate how well a team is going to face another one - because every variable matters; intensity, pace, pressure, brutality at contact, focus, tactics, timing ... and England have not been tested at the same level of ALL those variables over the last seven weeks as SA have. I have to say that even if they are a score behind at the 60 minute mark, it is going to be hard for the Rose's to hold them out. The Boks have the stamina, commitment and mutual trust to haul any team in/hold any team out - at the death.
RassieNaber have been saying for four years that they wanted to establish CONSISTENCY ... so look at the last two months; record thrashing of the ABs and thumped the Scots, fell to the Irish on the last whistle (without a few kicks) and handled the French at home, even though they were bested in 90% of the stat lines.
You can't hang your hat on the 'Boks having played their Final already.' They will be up for this game, in no uncertain terms.
And, Squidge, you are an analytical genius at this game, who would you say matches your genius as a coach in the international arena?
Who identified that the French could be manipulated to develop a flaw out wide under the high ball? Who selected Reinach to start - while Faf is far more effective in defense - and why? [to contain DuPont] and who mandated PSDT to play the classic 'track the ball down the line' open-side flanker? Did you notice how few penalties the Boks gave away against the French?
The England team have a mountain to climb tomorrow; a mountain bristling with storms, landslides, crevasses, thickets of brambles and very sharp edges.
    Good luck.

I'd love you to be right about England, but unfortunately I think their chances are on a par with me winning the lottery on the same day miss World knocks on my door begging me to give her a good seeing to.🙂
Borthwick has gone back to basics and is using his experienced players, that's been enough against mid level opposition and they've shown steady improvement as the tournament has progressed, but it won't be even close to good enough against SA.
SA are probably the worst team for England to play because England's main strengths are also SA's and they're currently better, because they're far further on in terms of developing their team.
International teams generally have a 4 year cycle of development between World Cups. By getting rid of their coach in WC year England effectively went back to square one. SA in contrast have actually kept much of the team and coaches from the last WC and have spent the time honing their game and tactics and adding another level to it. Currently they're a couple of levels above England and about 7 years ahead in their development.
I'm just hoping England give them a reasonable game and don't get a complete tonking.

As a Bok fan, England being competitive enough to make the game close and win it on a penalty or drop goal is certainly a worry. There's this voice in the back of my head though, that's telling me England are going to get a thrashing (2007 31-0 kind of thrashing).

If South Africa bring anything like they did against France, they'll put 20+ past England. Stewart at the back is good under the high ball, but way too slow on defence. SA backs to run around him.
France put 53 past this England team earlier this year, I don't think England have changed that much since. France were immense against South Africa and still lost in the last 20minutes. South Africa has evolved into a multi dimensional team that can soak up pressure, aggressively defend and ruthlessly attack up the middle or out wide. SA's biggest weakness is their place kicking/penalties, which cost them the game against Ireland. The weather may play a part in the semi's match as well.

Libbok is capable of kicking the ball into spaces in sucha fashion the the 50:22 rule could apply. The wings are fast enough to follow up. They just need to find a way to pull in the English back 3.

What makes me confident as a Boks fan is that I think we can ein the game any way we want to, we have the kind of tools and even experience at this point to play and almost any style of rugby at the highest level of quality. So even if England play to their strengths, I think SA are stronger at that style of rugby anyway. But I do agree that we still need to be careful and play at our best because England are full of quality, experienced players who, if they do really turn it on, have the capacity to cause an upset. But I just don't see this Boks team not turning up and playing a quality game where we dominate and control the game most of the way through.

In case anyone wonders why Cobus Reinach's dad keeps getting mentioned: Jaco Reinach (no 14) playing for the Springboks in 1986: ua-cam.com/video/nsJsB-OL730/v-deo.html
Also Jaco Reinach, on 15 April 1983, set a South African 400m record that stood for 19 years. Sadly I can't find video of it.

You guys are good Man! Nowadays underestimating never happens in the Bok world - that Brighton game is one of the most influential things that happened to the Boks in history because it will forever be there on our CV until the end of time and so the one everlasting consequence is that underestimation of anyone does not exist. Good punditry - watch the Bok bench impact.. Just watch. Boks by 15+

When I saw England beat Argentina with 14 men, that put me on notice that England has knockout tournament mentality. They are prepared to drag you to the ditch and slog it out and do whatever it takes to win. that is a dangerous team in a RWC. The way that England played against SA definitely reinforced that.

  • @MarkMoore-xk2rn

I must fess up, I am a Saffa, but that has nothing at all to do with this comment. You guys are talking as if England will be able to once more manage the pace and pressure and game, as they did with the folk they beat. I am not so sure that they will be able to tell the Boks to slow down their line speed, or their power play. The Boks are coming and with a bit of venom. I hold you guys as the Apex pundits, you have no peer, but here you seem to remove that the SA team does not care. Saracens for example is not the same team as the Boks, they really are not. And we are not the biggest, nor the tallest, nor the heaviest pack in the world.

    As the meme goes:
Every other 6 nations team: "You are, without doubt, the worst team I have ever seen in a semi final."
England: "Yes, but I am in the semi final."
    Now all we need is...
South Africa: "That's got to be the best semi final team I've ever seen!" 😲

I'm a bok fan, but I do not share any of the vitriol that is directed at Farrell. I also generally agree with the side of the argument that says ENG should pick either Ford or Farrell at 10, but not Ford at 10 Farrell at 12. HOWEVER.... Would England have been better in this match picking that combo in this one. Drop goals could keep ENG in it till the end, and, man, Ford impressed in the ARG match. I had a feeling the drop goal was going to make a comeback after the new goal line drop out law change. Teams were going to start practicing and getting better at taking those goals when on offer. This one will be tight, but should Ford be at 10? We'll see....

England have been playing exactly the way they need to for getting out of the group stage and pushing through the playoffs. Itoje to disrupt the maul, a front row to at least hold the scrum for the first 50-60 minutes, and Farrell and Ford able to punish mistakes 3 points at a time. If they can make the Boks lose their temper and make mistakes or concede a card and a try? They have a genuine chance

I think England are going to rough and rough up Arendse to provoke Etzebeth and Vermeulen into retaliating and cede cards and penalties.
I also think Farrell will lose it at some point with PSTD constantly in his face.
