Like Uruguay stole Squidge's heart last RWC, Portugal stole mine this time round. Loved their balsy never-say-die attitude against Fiji. My favourite moment of the tournament so far is the Portuguese hooker fielding the ball in back play and casually doing a kick to touch any fullback will be proud of. (I suspect only Siya Kolisi hoisting the cup again and taking his place among the greats will top that for me, here's hoping.) @fairplay3312, you should be very proud of your team indeed! Here's hoping Squidge heeds your request during the rugby-starved months that'll follow this World Cup.
@@Izingwe I think I speak for every portuguese when I say thank you for your kind words. We may not be the most skilled side of the World Cup, but we never lacked heart, and we didn't leave any match feeling like we only left half of us on the field. This team has taken over the hearts of many portuguese people that didn't follow rugby before, like myself, and I'm sure that the sport is just going to continue to grow in the coming years. Let's hope he does see my suggestion and makes the video. And by the way, about the Hooker kick, yes indeed, Mike Tadjer is a legend, and I'm very sad that Fiji was his last game, but at the same time, no better time to retire. I hope that our younger players continue to rise in the rugby scene, like Storti, Marta, Guedes, Martins and so on.
The boks disruption on the first Irish line out 5m from the line, I think they sent up two huge jumpers, really put doubt into Kellehers head, by the time they had lost 5 or 6, the Ireland team should have been in panic mode, but what bravery and resilience to grind out a win, the speed and ferocity of that boks defence was scary. I don't accept the 11 points claim, as one of the failed kicks ended in a try , so 3 lost but 5 gained, but a world class kicker like Pollard would have made it an even closer game.
Been waiting for this, mostly for the Sexpuns but also the analysis Game was a great watch, could feel my stomach trying to escape when Ireland were messing up all those lineouts.
Great analysis, and funny too😅. As an Irish fan, i was dismayed by our loss of the first 4 lineouts. I thought at time, this spelled doom. But, the lads corrected, on the fly. That was deeply impressive. We won, but by the skin of our teeth. Huge respect to the Boks. Their line speed, defense and all around savvy were a reflection of the world champion team they are. Let's not kid ourselves, if Handre Pollard had been at 10 handling the kicking duties, the result would likely have been different. Comparable to IRL vs France in Dublin 2 years ago.
Not really, Ireland also didn't take all the 3 pointers and played to the Bok kicking inaccuracy. But the Boks also didn't go for the corner and drive from the lineout to score. Both teams held back tricks.
@@ad2040 And I'm saying not really. Ireland didn't take 3 pointers when they could, and the Boks didn't kick to the corners with penalties and even took ridiculous 50 meter kicks.
Ireland and France are the two teams to watch. Our kicker did let us down when it really mattered, but dang, give Ireland the credit they rightfully deserve. The All Blacks melted away against the 7 1 split, but the Irish took it on the chin and came out of it much stronger. This explains the Irish teaching NZ a rugby lesson in their own backyard 😊. Where NZ reverted to their by now familiar crying game, Ireland showed the 7/1 can be limited in its effectiveness. Another aspect that severely limited the 7/1 strategy is the fact that we could not back our forwards with a reliable flyhalf. Ireland took advantage of this weakness and that is what the game is all about. You dont take prisoners in an international on this level, or any level.
Looking forward to not having to listen to it tbh. I think its hilarious how he does his level best not to enjoy Irish rugby and instead resorts to insults throughout. Sad little life jane

Full credit to the way the Irish played, was such a fantastic game to watch. We'll have to become more clinical and try to beat them next time, but they took their chances and deservedly take the win for this one.
This was much easier to watch and understand with you using still images - I think it improved your video a lot and you should consider using stills in the future. In the past, it could sometimes be difficult to listen to you and watch at the same time. This was great. As a SA supporter, I now understand Ireland and SA much better because of your fantastic analysis.
I thought the still footage worked really well. I often miss so many details of your work because of the amount you cover and the depth of analysis, but i think this format really worked for me. I could keep up with at least 20% at least 10% of the time. Keep up the good work. How do we complain to RWC about the lack of highlights ect?
I think World Rugby are banning footage to counteract the plethora of videos highlighting referee errors. At any point in the game there are maybe four or five infringements going on as teams push the limits and see what they can get away with... The ref sees what he (or she) sees, they blow what they blow, get over it (as the players have to).
Well done - most I’ve enjoyed a Squidge video in in years - a vintage Squidge vid with great insight and analysis of the defensive structures/attacking shape. I actually found it easier to follow with stills… maybe can add more in your regular videos for more complex analysis
[2:29]"It's bending the laws in a way that no referee will ever, ever pick up on and therefore it's legal, and it no doubt makes Rassie very jealous that he didn't do it first." Brilliant quote. And like Oscar Wilde, I wish I'd said it. So I will. Frequently. 😁😁😁
In fifteen years time, when Sexton finally retires, please please please have a compilation ready of all of the different names you have for him in your videos. Would be a wonderful tribute imho.
Basically by doing everything exactly the same, but with Pollard getting those 11 points we missed! 😂 It really felt like Rassie and Jacques were experimenting more than putting together a perfect game plan. Really hope the final is a rematch! It will feel a bit selfish to not let Ireland or France have a turn at looking after the Webb Ellis, but only briefly. 😅
@@TheGeneral_LUFCget passed the 1/4 for once then we can start talking irish world cup. You guys choke everytime, what makes it any different this time?
My Irish wife went to the game and was so exhausted by the experience she stayed off work on the Monday. Her boss (great guy who knew where she'd been) was totally cool with it. She too is now worried they've blown themselves out too early. 😋
Great video despite the crazy limitations of RWC. If anything, the use of stills forcing you to slow down made it easier to watch! As per other comments emphasises your ability to read and explain the game, despite the restrictions.
To be fair to Ireland with regards to the missed Springbok kicks, they also opted for kicks to touch from positions they could've had 3 points from. If the boks had that same mindset, one of the missed 3 pointers could've been a maul try. It was a bloody exhausting game to watch. As unlikely as the Springboks are to drop out after the Ire v Scott game, I will be sweating until the final whistle, never say never.
@Art-is-craft possibly, but one successful visit could swing things. All hypothetical now, just found it interesting Ireland going for touch and boks going for 3 when you would typically expect it to be the other way around.
@@TheHannes It would be typically the other way around five years ago for Ireland but the game has evolved in Ireland. Ireland wanted to play passing technical rugby over the last three decades but continuously failed but kept trying. Ireland now has the technical passing game so it will be interesting to see if Ireland can make it happen at a World Cup.
Seconded. Been watching my adopted homeland for a year or so, and wasn't quite as surprised how good they are but they still stole my heart on Sunday (actually almost nearly stopped my heart as my watch was saying my HR was 152bpm at one point lol)
Have a look back at Macks try. But this time watch Lowe after Hanson catches the ball. James Lowe looks up to the stands to watch the fans reaction, knowing when the ball left his hand that a try was scored.
Does anyone know what the green stuff in the little bottle was thay the Irish team was drinking on field. Looked like Crampfix wich is illegal to give to players on field.
Really hope we get to a round #2 in the final with SA having Pollard back. For all of Manie's field work, the kicking has been abysmal for months - maybe now that there isn't as much pressure, he can just focus on what he's excellent at.
Love your content man! Keep up the great work. It was one hell of a game. I have never felt so on edge during a game. With our Lineout malfunctioning I really thought we were heading for a shocker, but then they didn't kick their points. The 2nd half was more chilled from my couch. I really do think the Scotland game could be a whopper. Should Andy rest Sexton? Probably, will he? Most likely not... NZ in the Quarters is a fear inducing thought. But.... We believe, and so does our team! If we can reach the Finals, it will lift our entire country beyond belief. Love, Say Less.
Having seen what Pollard (competition for #10) did for Libbok in the game against Samoa, where both kickers were flawless, I think they may have solved their Achilles heal.
While South Africa did miss a lot of kicks Ireland turned down even more plus South Africa chose those long-range kicks at goal as Ireland had effectively nullified the South African pack the bomb squad was completely defused. If Ireland had felt in any way threatened by the South African forward the 4 penalties they kicked into touch to try and get a try which ended up in a lost opportunity would have been shots at goal and were all very kickable. From the very 1st minute it was pretty obvious that the Irish pack thought they had the bokk's number and for all the power of the bokk's and the numbers advantage of the 7-1 split allowing them to bring on fresher forwards the Irish had over double the amount of turnovers in the match. While the bokk's had issues Ireland had plenty left in the tank.
It's amazing how every analysis on Ireland doing well is littered with back handed compliments and subtle put downs. If Wales had beaten South Africa it would be a 2 part video on how incredible Wales are, not just how they 'held off' the Boks
Wales is having a free ride to the QF 😂 Aus is just dogshit poor at the moment and it is not a testament to how good Wales is. They actually needed the ref against Fiji.
Because he’s another bitter Welshman who hates Ireland. Upset that a nation who hasn’t won as many grand slams as wales has is having any form of success
Squidge has been posting strategically-edited videos putting Irish rugby down since about 1989 when they first appeared in bootleg VHS format. He's an English-Welsh supporter. You just have to live with it.
Hey Squidge, do you also think that the springboks attack must improve? We play too much crash ball rugby with our fowards from the first receiver instead of giving pull-back passes or tip on passes. In my opinion, the key to good attack is for the fowards to act as distributers like Ireland are doing because modern defence will 99% of the time not miss a normal crash ball tackle from the first receiver.
I think the Springboks attack is functioning as intended if you look at the spread of our pods. The first receiver isn't really trying to breach the defense (except when you're Damian De Allende) and is normally used to narrow the defense to create gaps / space. That's when we start doing set backline sequences, pull-backs and tip passing. It's like instead of replacing our crash ball (which is still very useful) we also have other options - not to mention how high our success rate is on up and unders.
@@alwynkotze9891 Our crash ball with the first receiver passes wasn't very useful against Tonga. They kept tackling us backwards. That is why the fowards must give pull back passes, tip passes and offloads to generate go foward. As I said, modern defence is too good to miss normal crash ball first receiver tackles.
@@alwynkotze9891 The box kicks doesn't work against the Irish and French because they defend it very well as they use blockers to form a wall in front of the catcher.
@@johannrugby3811 But then they have blockers offside and out of the game for a couple of seconds after the ball has been caught. And the blockers aren't 100%, and can give away penalties. Those box kicks are a micro world of possibilities, which is why everyone is trying it but you have to get it mostly right or you're just giving possession away and the Boks do get it mostly right.
Definitely one of the best games I’ve ever watched. Looked absolutely brutal and exhausting out there. Glad I’m not whoever is in Eztbeth way, sheesh guys brutal
@Jacksiloution England winning the WC will not happen this year. Depending on QF's, England will be facing a choice of NZ, SA, France, or Ireland. Ireland managed to play the worst game of rugby they've played in the past 18 months against England and we still got a BP win and England suffered the biggest ever defeat in a Six Nations, in Twickenham, and the highest losing margin ever against France all in one match. Unless England get Wales 2019 Six Nations levels of luck they havn't got a hope.

@@EvilEye1986 yeah man absolutely. I used to be the same with Ireland and the other tier 1 nations. I’m just worried an awful ref call is going to cost someone a fair chance at the World Cup in the knockouts. Will completely cause uproar. Us Irish fans are usually nice but sometimes we can be super toxic after bad reffing!!
@@drphil6039 yeah. Part of the game but hope it doesn’t happen. I’m genuinely shocked at the SA Ireland result. You guys didn’t beat us, we lost with our atrocious kicking.
You’re the only UA-camr that I have to slow down the playback speed vs increase it! Great job.
I'm very new to rugby, I'm loving the World Cup and your videos, and, as a proud portuguese, I would like to enquire if it was possible for you to make a video to analyse Portugal's perfomance after the tournament is over? I would absolutly love another in depth look at our national team
You should be proud they play a lovely brand of rugby. I would love to see them get more tests in November and July.
What surprised me was that for such a low scoring, stop start game the it felt like time absolutely flew by.
Been waiting for this, mostly for the Sexpuns but also the analysis
Game was a great watch, could feel my stomach trying to escape when Ireland were messing up all those lineouts.
@@dougerrohmer Twaddle. He is talking about Pollards accuracy. Ireland were lucky Libbok had his dunce boots on.
The return of Am is also huge for the Springboks ahead of the finals, excited for the rest of the WC.
We must be getting close to the last 100 variations on Sexton's name in Squidge videos. It will be the end of an era.
Looking forward to not having to listen to it tbh. I think its hilarious how he does his level best not to enjoy Irish rugby and instead resorts to insults throughout. Sad little life jane
@@rosscoghlan I'll never understand how you could watch that video and think that squidge isn't enjoying Irish rugby and just wants to insult them
NEVER! 😂😂😂😂
Honeypot Sexbadger has many many more variations to go.
And Squidge should be in the Guinness book of world records for all the creative spins he's put on Coddiewobble Troutpanther's name. ❤👌🤗
Well done for making the format work in the circumstances
Full credit to the way the Irish played, was such a fantastic game to watch. We'll have to become more clinical and try to beat them next time, but they took their chances and deservedly take the win for this one.
This was much easier to watch and understand with you using still images - I think it improved your video a lot and you should consider using stills in the future. In the past, it could sometimes be difficult to listen to you and watch at the same time. This was great.
As a SA supporter, I now understand Ireland and SA much better because of your fantastic analysis.
The creativity to make a video with pictures is unmatched...🔥
Lol someone has never heard of stop motion
I thought the still footage worked really well. I often miss so many details of your work because of the amount you cover and the depth of analysis, but i think this format really worked for me. I could keep up with at least 20% at least 10% of the time. Keep up the good work. How do we complain to RWC about the lack of highlights ect?
'for once world rugbys insitance I only use stills if not for copyright reasons but for... safety' had me rolling hahaha
I think World Rugby are banning footage to counteract the plethora of videos highlighting referee errors. At any point in the game there are maybe four or five infringements going on as teams push the limits and see what they can get away with... The ref sees what he (or she) sees, they blow what they blow, get over it (as the players have to).
Squidge has such a perfect balance of producing absolutely world class analysis while also being infinitely hilarious! Another great video
Well done - most I’ve enjoyed a Squidge video in in years - a vintage Squidge vid with great insight and analysis of the defensive structures/attacking shape. I actually found it easier to follow with stills… maybe can add more in your regular videos for more complex analysis
Dude, you know your rugby….I’ve learnt a lot watching your content. Thanks!
That was an awesome cast… I was actually able to keep up with you ! Keep up the outstanding commentary.
good vid - shared to our irish rugby group on FB
[2:29]"It's bending the laws in a way that no referee will ever, ever pick up on and therefore it's legal, and it no doubt makes Rassie very jealous that he didn't do it first."
Brilliant quote. And like Oscar Wilde, I wish I'd said it.
So I will. Frequently.

In fifteen years time, when Sexton finally retires, please please please have a compilation ready of all of the different names you have for him in your videos. Would be a wonderful tribute imho.
This match was chess rugby at its finest. Glad we got the win but man, it was 50.50 to the very end.
Simply, the best analysis I have ever seen! Thank you! From a Bok suppoter.
Those great Johnny Sexton names... another for you. Sunny Jexton. From a dyslexic.
I can’t wait til Sexbot’s goodbye video from Squidge where he might finally call him by his name
I was shitting myself at the end of that match
It was way too close for comfort but glad we came out on top
Excellent analysis, thanks so much
Amazingly insightful analysis Mr. Squidge! It's a pleasure to read your posts because they always deliver.
The boks updated their lineout also to close the gap, the ref team never caught it..
He did cop onto it after 20 mins ref’s will have to watch for that.
Im thinking of putting in a freedom of information request for all the names Squidge has called Johnny Sexton outlined in tabular form 😂
🇮🇪 ❤ 🏴 great stuff, Squidge. Glad Wales are going well for you too!
One of the most amazing games of rugby I've ever seen
Fantastic analysis of that epic game. Awesome channel. Boks gonna win the though, losing a group game confirms this .
How are they gonna beat the Irish lad. Come on. This is twice now u lost to us. This is Ireland's time
Basically by doing everything exactly the same, but with Pollard getting those 11 points we missed!
The ABs lost a group game so....

The ref also spotted the gap in the line out was being closed.
Kicking to touch would not have helped SA. Ireland are extraordinarily tight in defence and have ability to counter attack when being pressed.
@Art-is-craft possibly, but one successful visit could swing things. All hypothetical now, just found it interesting Ireland going for touch and boks going for 3 when you would typically expect it to be the other way around.
@@TheHannes
It would be typically the other way around five years ago for Ireland but the game has evolved in Ireland. Ireland wanted to play passing technical rugby over the last three decades but continuously failed but kept trying. Ireland now has the technical passing game so it will be interesting to see if Ireland can make it happen at a World Cup.
Great Video! edited brilliantly
Great video!! Could you make on the Oz vs Portugal game? I really have enjoyed watching Portugal this tournament. They have been a revelation for me.
Seconded. Been watching my adopted homeland for a year or so, and wasn't quite as surprised how good they are but they still stole my heart on Sunday (actually almost nearly stopped my heart as my watch was saying my HR was 152bpm at one point lol)
Great video. Thanks for sharing. The stills don’t massively impact the overall quality.
I think squidge and will owen now stand as the 2nd and 3rd choices for springbok kicker
Thanks squidgy. Really like the stills photos. More please
Have a look back at Macks try. But this time watch Lowe after Hanson catches the ball.
James Lowe looks up to the stands to watch the fans reaction, knowing when the ball left his hand that a try was scored.
Good stuff as usual. I've been checking every day waiting for this.
Brilliant as usual- I believe South Africa haven’t revealed their intentions for the knock out games, has Ireland?
What about one of the biggest upsets of Rugby World Cup? Portugal just won against Fiji on the last game of the pool stage😮
This was a rare occurrence where perfectly equal teams battle out for 80 minutes and both teams only getting 1 try each shows this
Love your channel. Great stuff..... I always share to other rugby fans. Keep it up.
"Bill is always watching" needs to be the thumbnail for this video
What I am most impressed by is that you went 15:02 without saying Jiggy Sexwing's name once

We need a in depth Portugal vs fiji please!!
You’re such a bloody hero Squidge!
another brilliant video from squidge. as a young player it is helping me expand me rugby knowledge so thanks squidge 👍🏻
Does anyone know what the green stuff in the little bottle was thay the Irish team was drinking on field. Looked like Crampfix wich is illegal to give to players on field.
plus the lovely Dove scented grip spray they were spraying all over their bodies , which is also illegal.
Bill Beaumont: Free Squidge videos and grow the game! (Amazing vid, despite the restrictions!)
Really hope we get to a round #2 in the final with SA having Pollard back. For all of Manie's field work, the kicking has been abysmal for months - maybe now that there isn't as much pressure, he can just focus on what he's excellent at.
You are simply the best. Make my day!! Thanks
Wait wait wait ... When did nordVPN take square space the Antoine Dupont of website builder's place ?
2:23 is not legal it should be penalised, there's actually a rule for it, it just shows how biased the refs are toward Ireland.
I only saw "How did Ireland...." and clicked faster than I could blink. 😂😂😂
I literally woke up with a huge bruise on my leg the next day, with no clue where it came from haha
The key component to the boks defense is not shooting wingers it’s wingers who camp offside for 80 mins
Squidge, spot on again. And hilarious to boot.
Having seen what Pollard (competition for #10) did for Libbok in the game against Samoa, where both kickers were flawless, I think they may have solved their Achilles heal.
Bigger kicker less attacking threat. Lubbock is a handful
As an AB fan, I don't recall seeing this kinda of smart defence from them ever. Coaching has changed it seems.
Upset that a nation who hasn’t won as many grand slams as wales has is having any form of success
nah, think you're being a bit too sensitive to it
Wow sad man.
Squidge has been posting strategically-edited videos putting Irish rugby down since about 1989 when they first appeared in bootleg VHS format. He's an English-Welsh supporter. You just have to live with it.
Been waiting for this review all week! Great stuff as usual.
Faf's kicking was painful! How I wish Francois Steyn was still playing!
Brilliant analysis. Hope you can go back to video clips in the not too distant future.
@@alwynkotze9891 Things will go better for us if the first receiver tries to breach the defence.
As an Irish fan, I'm not sure who I would rather see in a WC final if we get that far. It's going to be a nail-biting expierience for sure.
Hoping we face England somehow, would love to see smth like NZ SA and England to win the cup
