    It's been an interesting Six Nations so far for England. Two tight wins followed by a brilliant twenty minutes that fell away into a disappointing final result. So, with that game against Scotland fresh in the memory, what is Steve Borthwick trying to build with England and how long might it take to come together?

      That's as dumb a comment as the (straw) fans you're supposedly outing. Most England fans aren't demanding a 50-0 win, we just want to enjoy watching our team. That's all. Really, isn't that all any fan wants? Yet cos it's big bad England then we're the only country where voicing that unhappiness is apparently a crime. And there's only been a handful of games in the 2020s that have been enjoyable

      @@adamdickinson2894 Completely agree that it’s fine to voice unhappiness, especially after games like against Scotland where we showed early on what the team is capable of. My point is a fair few England fans go straight to Borthwick out way too quickly. If analysis like this was more widely viewed there would be far less unrest and more unity which would surely instil confidence in borthwick and the players.

    4:20 sums up all that is wrong with England. Had that been the All Blacks, Ireland etc there would have been someone on Mitchell's shoulder. As it is, Mitchell makes a break and there is no-one in support. There never is. Happens to Marcus Smith all the time - breaks the line and has no-one to offload to. In a warm up game he broke the line and had to slow to an amble to allow someone to catch up in support. England never seem to coach close support running. Compare it to the All Blacks who always have someone on the runner's shoulder.

    • @Formakiwi
      @Formakiwi 2 місяці тому +3

      You can coach it all you like, but if your squad are all carrying 10kg of extra gym muscle it´s a damn sight harder for them to keep up with that kind of pace. English rugby´s emphasis on size and bulk is to the detriment of the more athletic side of the game.

    • @jakemiddleton5266
      @jakemiddleton5266 2 місяці тому +1

      @@Formakiwi 100%. England had the heaviest back row last 6 nations, the heaviest at the World Cup, and the heaviest at this 6 nations. You cannot have all that bulk, and then have heavy scrum experts like Marler and Cole on as well. Mercer and Dombrandt are two more mobile 8s who both link well with backs, yet only Dombrandt is in the squad, and hasn't made a 23 once. The desire to have lots of players who can punch through the middle is overbalanced, allowing defences to target the very few players who will actually attack space in the backs. And when they do occasionally punch through, no-one is prepared as it usually doesn't work!
      Speaking of the backs, Marcus should be starter (sadly he was injured), but Finn should have started instead. Those are the two battling for the shirt for the next World Cup, they need the experience.

      Love the muscle bound theory, and obviously none of the other nations who can support a break use weights. Clearly the England players lose a lot of muscle when they’re playing for their clubs and can do this. Or is it the restrictive coaching we’ve had for way too long whereby players go where they’ve been told to go rather than reacting to what’s in front of them?

    3:39 but the same is true for every other team (prepping for world cup, with different time name for 6N so they've got less prep). England don't have any special excuse for being disjointed or lack of cohesion.

    This week’s podcast offerings were surprisingly upbeat and more or less positive about England’s direction under Borthwick and Squidge’s thoughts here seem to echo that sentiment inasmuch that England remain a work-in-progress with improvements coming incrementally, perhaps at a percentage point or two per game.
    I do like the subtle suggestion that Borthwick has probably put a lot of preparation into the next two games. Win one of either and suddenly, England’s 6N campaign takes on a different complexion. Whatever the result, I think England will give Ireland their toughest game of the tournament to date. 👍👍

    I wonder what Robbie and his viewers think about England needing to be more consistent with selection for the attack to 'click'. Tindall and May made a big deal out of this on the GBR pod. If England want to play an Ireland style attack, where players are expected to know not only their own roles, but those of every other player (NFL style), consistent selection would surely accelerate the process of improvement in attack.

    England’s problem is inside centre and it has been for a long time. It was never addressed under Jones who very often played Farrell at inside centre. So, another inside centre was not developed. Nick Tompkins not being selected was an almighty clanger which still haunts us to this day. I wish we had managed to claim Cameron Redpath too.
    All this has been exacerbated by the lack of English inside centres in the Premiership. I really don’t believe the answer is to pick outside centres at twelve, these are very different roles. For now, we need to pick the few English players who play at inside centre regularly, Fraser Dingwall, Max Ojomoh and in time Olly Hartley. I wonder how different the result would have been at Murrayfield if Nick Tompkins had been playing twelve for England.

    You got me with Keith Robertson's rarely seen and glorious try from 1985, you lost me by calling England the 'World's 3rd best team' (They finished 3rd in the World Cup, it's NOT the same thing!) but you won me back subsequently. Thanks! Though arguing that England were great in the first 20 minutes at Murrayfield apart from dropping the ball 6 times is shades of the old 'operation a success but the patient died' line of thinking.

    Mike Catt is a good look but its probably going to take most of this world cup schedule until it clicks and its not really the fault of the coaching team or the players. Goodman at Leinster (replaceing Catt for Ireland) has been coaching these systems for so long now that its how the schools teams play.

    I genuinely get the feeling my every time Time. a top 10 international team in the world realises that at the moment there not as good as they used to be (relatively speaking) they just pull out the “we’re rebuilding”. Wales have been rebuilding for the past 5 years, England the past 3/4 years, Ireland to be fair did rebuild, Scotland have pulled out that excuse in recent times, Italy are just building

    When Borthwick came in the excuse for only winning two matches in the six nations was that too many players held their position for too long and not enough new players were given a chance in the squad he had, now the excuse for only winning two is that there are too many new players in the squad, and the turnover on assistant coaches starts because nothing is the fault of head (and i use that term in the loosest possible way) coach, its almost as though we have been through all this before with a previous head coach.

      Or several. Hopefully Borthwick will be the last coach appointed largely because of his (distant) association to the class 2003, and the RFU drop their ridiculous attempts to buy their way to World Cup glory by pilfering coaches from South Africa. Build it from the ground up like everyone else who´s ever enjoyed long term success in the sport.

    • @joeboonmusic4004

      @takennames Couldn't agree more. Rugby is such a multi-faceted game and people are expecting us (One tournament after a WC in which our coach did a good job of getting things together in such short time) to have a fully bedded-in attack and defence... under a new defence coach. People calling for players to be dropped and players to be called in; people calling for coaches to be dropped and called in... it's wild. I've seen people saying they can't be bothered to watch this English team... I mean what the hell. We go a few years without winning the 6N... Scottish fans have NEVER seen their team win a tournament, but they still watch and support. If people can't back the team through this period, they don't deserve to back them when they're on great form.

    THANK YOU for highlighting the boring boomers and their constant 'Borewick' or 'Borethick' iterations. It's so mind-numbingly dull and reflective of the toxic attitude some so-called fans and pundits (like the average-at-best Andy Goode) have towards English rugby. I don't remember seeing that level of toxicity from Irish fans when Farrell spent a few years getting them to the spot they are now... but for England, everything has to happen NOW, because 'resources' or 'we invented the game!'...
    We have young talent and I do think Borthwick has the potential to lead this team on. We do need a proper attack coach, though...

  • @alanfox6454
    @alanfox6454 2 місяці тому

    Borthwick playing style is archaic, works at club level but international stage hes being left behind. England have the biggest pool of players to select and hes still choosing players who are hanging on, if a team is in transition you have to let these lads go and rebuild, otherwise you are just mending over the cracks for short term. I understand Borthwick is in a high pressure cooker to get results in his role as England should expect results so it feels his team selection is exactly that. Can see him getting results here and there but he wont be consistent until he takes the step in making wholesale changes to the team in order to make a transition unlike his style of little by little.

    • @alanfox6454
      @alanfox6454 2 місяці тому

      @@Krampus5164 I totally agree that quantity does not equal quality. But the RFU themselves have to look at whats going wrong and not keep brushing under the carpet. The likes of Dan Cole, Elliot Daly, Tuilagi and even more are well past there best days and in truth are holding a Jersey from a player that needs game time to get England through this transition quicker but again like I said ,high pressure job for Borthwick and needs results to hold his job, so hes going with a host of tried and trusted and just get over the line without evolving the English game and he can't do a Gatland transition because he has the reputation and has done everything to allow him and not get the sack IMO.

    it is “PERFORM other players rolls”…It’s is a very subtle difference and will provide exponential gains. the pack needs to develop greater skills…the pack is great at their primary jobs, I think they are world class, and that’s where it stops. To expand “the game”, they need to expand “their game”.
