I remember in beauty school doing one of my practical exams on a Japanese woman for a PF, her hair took so long to lift. It was insane. I was on crunch time, I convinced her to lift to an orange and I gave her some nice chocolate copper lowlights lol but Japanese people have strong ass hair.
Yeah it's the strongest hair so obviously any straightener from there is probably too strong for many other people. I remember from highschool that the asian straight hair is very round, while curly hair is kind of flat with scutes sticking out. Mine will cling together like velcro without product, I can never use heat as my hair turns top straw even just from a blowdryer.
@Flower7 Oh no, round is the most perfect state of the hair. Though straight hair can be weak from damage and from being thin. You can have thick curly hair too but nothing is as strong as thick asian straight hair. It's what most natural extensions are made from too.
I'm a stylist also 15 years and all I kept saying was AMEN! AMEN! AMEN! I love that you did this live so people can understand the why's we do what we can/need to do to save the integrity of the hair!
I would absolutely love to be one of her clients cause she be having me realize I don’t do my hair properly, she actually cares about your hair health and goals 💛.
I had a Japanese straightener done years ago, my hair fell out. Never again. Now I’m natural with nice length. Natural requires a lot of work too, but totally worth it!
I should probably be grateful that my hairdresser in Japan decided to do a much gentler straightening treatment for me. I have fine 2b/2c hair. I guess this would be the equivalent to the mild relaxer this lovely lady uses.
I’m glad I’ve learned to take care of my natural low porosity hair. With the right moisture and repair products and most limited amount of manipulation, it is actively growing.
@@giftofleadership to each their own. Relaxer is not for me, my hair never grew past chin length, now is back length as a natural. We all have to do what works for us. ❤️
I'm not in school to be a hairstylist. I just like watching these videos because they're relaxing to watch. Oh and I love her sarcasm and subtle shade to other stylists. I love it!!!

I wish Crystal went into more detail about why the Japanese straightening treatment was worse for the client’s hair other than “its not made for us”. The damage on the first client looks no different than the typical damage you would see on anyone who is transitioning from a relaxer and trying to manage two completely different textures on one head. Honestly, I was impressed with how little damage there was given just how long her natural hair was. She was transitioning for a whole year, so the fact that all of that old straitened hair hasn’t all snapped off is way more impressive to me. Especially juxtaposed to the second client whose hair was fully relaxed and there were clearly chunks of uneven hair INCHES shorter than the rest. (This is in no way meant to shame client 2 in anyway! It’s not my place to judge any woman on the way she takes care of her hair. I don’t know her life and what she’s going through on a daily basis.) I’m only concerned from an educational perspective to learn why Crystal emphasized so much against the Japanese treatment, but had no problem doing a relaxer on hair that was so much more damaged. What is it specifically about the Japanese straightener versus any other straightener, and particularly why is a relaxer okay? I just don’t see how you can boil it down to “its not made for us” then go on to use a product that WAS made for us, but is clearly doing just as much (arguably even more) damage to that specific client’s hair. At the end of the day, all human hair on a molecular level is made out of the same keratin and disulfide bonds, the only difference is structural. All of these chemical straighteners and perms do the same thing. They break down the chemicals bonds of the hair shaft, the stylist then shapes the hair into whatever shape you desire, and then the chemicals reform the bonds again. There are many videos of black girls living in Japan getting these done, and making it work long term because that is all they have access to, so to attribute the issues the first client had to the fact that the treatment “wasn’t made for us” when there are a number of factors that could have contributed to damage she experienced feels irresponsible. It’s not just that “Japanese hair is more course than our hair”. I pray that you all know better than to generalize and entire population of people into one stereotype. These treatments were literally made for Japanese people with finer, curlier type 3 hair to get the straight look. It’s one thing to encourage the use of black-owned products and businesses to support the success of the community (we can all get behind that), but its a whole nother thing to say was can’t use certain products because “they weren’t made for us” with no explanation as to why that maybe the case. Its language like this that made me and the other little girls around me growing up think that we would never be able to have long healthy hair because we couldn’t afford the products that “were made for us”. Language like this limits our options as black women, and it doesn’t just stop at hair, but I’m not gonna get into that; this comment is already way too long. At the end of the day, whether you’re relaxed or natural, whether you’re using Suave, TGIN, or you’re buying products from the Asian market down the street because thats all you have access to, our hair is stronger than you think, and I guarantee, as long as you keep your hair moisturized, you are gentle with it, you manipulate it as little as possible, and you protect it while you sleep, you can make any product work.
You said what you said! I say all of the time on my channel... "Black" women will have a much easier time with hair care as soon as they stop subscribing to the myth of black hair.
I’ve been natural for about 10 years. But when I was relaxed Affirm was my all time favorite relaxer. At least it did very well on my hair texture. Great job.❤
Olaplex stops bonds breaking and re-builds broken bonds on hair thats damaged from chemicals, bleach, colours and heat etc.. The No.3 home treatment is amazing, and I use it (no.1& 2) in my bleach when lightening hair to reduce damage. Its great stuff.
Since you like No. 3, you’ll love No. 0. Add it on top of 3 after 5-10 min and leave on an additional 5-10 minutes before shampooing. Recommend it to your clients.
My stylist used the Olaplex system and it damaged my hair. There is a whole Facebook and Instagram group about the damage Olaplex products does to hair.
@@msj793 Really? I have never heard anybody say Olaplex damaged their hair. I have heard people question if its doing anything but damage never, im surprised. il look it up.
@@msj793 I can’t explain why Olaplex products damage the hair of some women and work miracles for others. So don’t use this line. Another product line that also works great for me is K18. This lady is amazing, her hands are a gift, she is so knowledgeable and the best thing, she tells it as it is, tells if something is not good and says I don't know if she doesn't, no messing around, watching her do hair is so relaxing, the only problem I have is trying to stay awake as it's so soothing and mesmerising to watch! Lovely lady.
Cushioned vs nappy is a better term to use so that clients aren’t offended by the term nappy hair. Also I’ve found that applying the relaxer to the by not allowing it to touch the scalp especially in the more cushioned hair; alleviates the burning sensation. The results are undeniable when it come to the relaxer effectively straightening the hair.
I wish you were my cos teacher back in the day. I've been around relaxers all my life and never have I ever thought to condition after rinsing but before neutralizing! It makes sooo much sense!! Break down the cuticle and bonds. Moisture Literally gets consumed by the stands. Shampoo closes the bonds and locks the moisture in hair. Ma'am that's genius!!!
And for you that's wonderful. Yeah and other women who decide to do whatever that's their CHOICE. I wear mines mostly braided started during college and lasted all 27 years during the military. MY CHOICE. Choices being the word here.
Bravo. You are an excellent instructor. I'm a retired hair stylist of 24 years. I was also a Master Artistic Educator for Matrix and Lotel for 16 years. You are amazing.
I have watched you the last month or so and I think you are an amazing Stylist as well as CEO. You really care about your clients hair and them personally. That is so wonderful. You are a joy to watch. Thank you.
My last relaxer was last June of '22. I do not see myself relaxing again, but I am not chopping, either. I'm just letting it be. If I were to relax, it be one more time and that be that. I am nowhere near tired of straight hair, but would one day love to learn how to get the curls that the Mowry Twins have when they have their natural corkscrew curls, and do it on myself without the flat iron, but have proper air drying technique.
You are the blessing we needed on you tube!! ❤❤❤🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰… it’s sad that every stylist isn’t like you! You can tell they’re in it for the money and not true hair maintenance! May your journey on here and in your life as a beautician stay blessed! 🤩🤩🤩
I agree 100%!! I stopped getting relaxers when the pandemic hit in 2020...all the shops were closed so I made my decision to transition back to natural. I have been keeping my hair braided for about almost 3 years now and it's thriving!! Just leaving it alone works!
@@leratosss Once a chemical or high heat is applied to your strands, it breaks down keratin. Your hair is no longer healthy no matter how it looks visually. Yes, you have to take care of your hair for it to remain at its best state.. but dye, bleach, relaxers, too many unnatural products, and high manipulation will destroy your locks and prevent it from retaining its length. The majority of the time, the ends are sparse due to breakage.
I try to tell people that. You think they would listen to whatever I say since I so called "have thr longest hair they've seen on a black girl", but no. I do understand heredity plays a big part but I do believe leaving your hair alone works universally.
Many people stop using relaxers because they want “healthier hair” when a bigger concern is the harsh chemicals and the health issues that have been linked to relaxers.
Japanese relaxers are better than a regular relaxer because of the chemical base. It's all about the after care. It's the same base as the Jerry curl back in the day that grew the hair like crazy.
@@gogoldiego My lovely late bonus used to use Geri Curls well before getting into my late daddy's life. At some point, I'll say mid '10s, and my bonus sis-in-law did her hair, and not only got the Geri Curls out, but went from shoulder length to Bob length or touch shorter. Since then, just wore natural hair, straighten it but bumped the ends. Edit: Jeri and not Geri.
Been getting it for 18 years and once every 6 months. Also, I never had an issue! I think it’s also the texture of her hair as mentioned in the video. Mine is coarse but doesn’t seem to mind the Japanese straightening.
I've specialized in Japanese Thermal Reconditioning, and have used Liscio for over 20 years. If the hair is overprocessed it will break off . If, done correctly, & cuticle is NOT shattered, it can be done on African American hair.
Speaking truth. I am African American and have the liscio system in my hair. My hair is stronger and down my back. My stylist is wonderful and learned how to do this system on Black hair. He’s not black but Japanese and took the time to get trained properly.
I have a Japanese hair straightening system. My stylist is Japanese and learned how to do this system on black women’s hair. I’m black fyi… I love it. He doesn’t put a lot of heat in my hair. And my hair isn’t processed fully. He tested my hair before applying my first treatment and wrote down specific instructions on how to do my hair. My treatment is tailored to my hair. I love my stylist and my hair is now down my back. I put heat on my hair maybe three times a year at 160 degrees and one pass. during the treatment he straightens my hair at 130 degrees and one pass.
Thanks for all the info you make washing the hair so relaxing .my hair is natural grey I braid my hair not often Jam 77yrs old after braiding I find much of my hair comes out.I gave you a thumbs up for your info❤
CRYSTAL IS SO KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE STRUCTURE OF THE HAIR ITSELF AND I LOVE THAT ABOUT HER!! ALSO SHE IS A FABULOUS HAIR MAGICIAN!! LOL😁 SHE'S A MAGICAN WITH HAIR NOT JUST A STYLIST!!!!!
I remember my daughter got some type of straightening system. It looked good in the beginning, but eventually her hair was falling out everywhere. Had to keep cutting it until it was gone
I'm new here and I absolutely love how you respond. "How can I get my hair to do XYZ" You: You can't 🤣🤣. I really appreciate your honesty. Soon as I figure out my porosity I'm gonna ask what would help my hair grow. I'm natural. My texture is fine and my hair seems to have stopped growing. Like it always get just passed the shoulders and stops.
I’m a stylist and I do Japanese thermal reconditioning every single day. That is all I do . If it is done properly it’s an amazing process and hair is often healthier if retouches are done in timely manner and client properly takes care of hair. I have clients that couldn’t get hair past their shoulders and now have waist length hair. BUT…. You are absolutely correct this hair type is not ideal for this process. I discourage all clients that come to me with this hair type from doing Japanese for this reason . It will break eventually, curl is strong , hair is weak and the two textures tangle . There are new options on the market that are also permanent but much more gentle .
Well said Summer. Every product is not made for everyone. But like you said, if you are serviced by a licensed skilled professional, and practice proper home maintenance your hair will flourish… Continued success with your career…😊
I've been using Liscio for 22 years. It's designed to be inner mixed according to the hair texture/porosity. For Adrican American clients I highly recommend the aftercare & 4 month retouches. Milbon is an AMAZING company , and I have used other brands..just found that liscio was more flexible and predictable.
JHS treatment is an amazing process for everyone but only if you maintain it with proper home care and getting touch ups when needed. I have afro hair , and i’ve had this treatment done for the past 2 and half years. For the past 10 years i haven’t been able to grow my hair past my shoulders up until getting the japanese hair straightening. Now my hair is half way down my back !! The only time i experienced breakage was when i waited to long to get a touch up. The difference in textures with your new growth and previously treated hair causes to much friction and cause the hair to snap !

FYI- when trying to clear the shampoo(or any type of soap)bubbles down the drain, use cold water. It dissipates the soap bubbles faster and you use WAY LESS water💦 This tip is for clearing the bubbles down drain only not the head (technically you could but it’s not terribly comfortable 😱) I live in California where the water rates are high and they like to ration our usage😅I hope you find this info helpful😊👍🏼

Not only that but some women be flat ironing every few months which can lead to breakage, split ends etc..
Curly hair is *exactly* what Japanese straightening is for, though. It's not very common, but there are Japanese people with curly hair. Because it's not the norm, they may have difficulty figuring out how to care for their hair or honestly just prefer to make it straight bc they like it. Koreans do it too and I believe they use the same chemicals/process as the Japanese straightening.

I have had a bad straightener before and had to go to the salon and cut off the bad parts every two weeks. After all the bad parts were cut I got a relaxer and have been relaxed for twenty years. My hair is still thick and healthy. I go to the salon and either get Affirm or Mizanni. Straighten out natural hair every week is bad. My mom only straighten our natural hair every three weeks when we were younger.
I am a year into my natural hair journey, I had to cut so much of my hair off. I will never never never use any type of straightener again, my hair is so healthier now!
Love the fact you clarify the difference between a relaxer and a perm. When I started to introduce myself to black people hair I cuestioned that same, because I come from a place where women get perm and that's a very different procedure. Also, because here people naturally don't have that type of curl that often, there fore, people go to get a curly perm treatment to change their waves or lines.
Relaxers straighten the hair and perms add curls/waves. Though some still consider getting a perm, as straighten the hair. It's all good. Depending on the coarseness of the hair and the strength of the curl, perm solution can be used to straighten hair but is not as strong as other chemical relaxers.

I guess it depends on how strong your hair is because I Japanese straighten my hair every 8 to 12 weeks without any problems. My hair is still nice and thick with no breakage or split ends. I prefer the Japanese perm instead of other perms because it's less damaging to my hair and I like how it has a neutralizer. Anyways I will say Japanese straighteners are not for everyone I recommend doing your research before getting one.
I have tried so many products. The only product that seems to work really well with my perm hair is the Davines product. They have a shampoo and conditioner that makes my hair feel extremely soft and moisturized. The line is called NOUNOU and it's meant for perm / damaged hair. I also use their other products as well. I definitely would recommend their products. It's pricey, but it's worth it.

OOO my gosh I thought you were in New York. I transitioned by cutting off my relaxed hair back in 2008 and I flat iron once a week and didn't have hair loss or anything like that( it wasn't bone straight and I have 4a high-density low-porosity hair). I ended up with heat-trained hair and always felt that was a better way than a relaxer( didn't have breakage on anything). I ended up cutting it off in 2011 because I wanted to wear my natural kinks and curls. Now, I straighten my hair once a month during the winter months. That lady who is transitioning and flat ironing her hair all time probably shouldn't continue- it seems that she wants her hair to be straight all the time. The best thing for natural hair is a deep conditioner with heat at every wash. And water and grease which keep my hair nice.

I don’t know her life and what she’s going through on a daily basis.)
I’m only concerned from an educational perspective to learn why Crystal emphasized so much against the Japanese treatment, but had no problem doing a relaxer on hair that was so much more damaged.
Totally agree. Perfectly said 🙌
You are so correct! Thank you so much for this wonderfully thorough and logical critique.
You said what you said! I say all of the time on my channel... "Black" women will have a much easier time with hair care as soon as they stop subscribing to the myth of black hair.

I love how Crystal complete her hair care I always give her a thumbs up for a job well done.

Been Natural Since end of 2020 and hair has thrived much more than what relaxing could ever do .
Thank you Crystal for the educational hair videos ❤
I’ve been natural for about 10 years. But when I was relaxed Affirm was my all time favorite relaxer. At least it did very well on my hair texture. Great job.❤
I like how honest you are! You are a straight shooter when you give advice/information! No sugar coating/no bs! Just straight to the point! Love it!❤
Olaplex stops bonds breaking and re-builds broken bonds on hair thats damaged from chemicals, bleach, colours and heat etc..

She still had so much hair even after the cut. It was damaged but I was surprised how ok it looked after the initial blow dry. Happy for her!
Yes, if that were applied to my scalp I would be on fire.
Nappy does have a negative connotation.
I'm from the '70s, so I know those times when nappy was much more commonly used.
I love that you educate while you’re working on her hair.
My hair has been natural for 31 years and I will not put a relaxers or perms in my hair... I am so glad that I decided to go natural....
And for you that's wonderful. Yeah and other women who decide to do whatever that's their CHOICE. I wear mines mostly braided started during college and lasted all 27 years during the military. MY CHOICE. Choices being the word here.

The key to having beautiful hair is leaving it alone.
I agree 100%!! I stopped getting relaxers when the pandemic hit in 2020...all the shops were closed so I made my decision to transition back to natural. I have been keeping my hair braided for about almost 3 years now and it's thriving!! Just leaving it alone works!

@@ursalawooley9334 Amen!
Ummm….Her hair is beautiful! That Japanese hair straightener looks like it worked for her. It’s just time to get a touch up.
Agreed, it's recommended to use certain products for the straightened hair, she also needs to smooth/stretch her new growth to mitigate damage
Japanese relaxers are better than a regular relaxer because of the chemical base. It's all about the after care. It's the same base as the Jerry curl back in the day that grew the hair like crazy.

My lovely late bonus used to use Geri Curls well before getting into my late daddy's life.
That's not her hair texture her hair that's growing in is porous breathing their hair on the bottom is limp and did you don't know what you're talkin

So true. Japanese relaxers are great. Like anything you have to take care of your hair in between services.
Been getting it for 18 years and once every 6 months. Also, I never had an issue!
I think it’s also the texture of her hair as mentioned in the video. Mine is coarse but doesn’t seem to mind the Japanese straightening.
She looks so Pretty!! Her Hair is just so Lovely!! Georgeous!!! GREAT JOB CRYSTAL!!!

Without a stabilizer to stop the cleating. Your hair can fall out
You’re very Professional and knows how to interact with your clients I give U 💯 percent full mark 👏🏽👏🏽
What system do u use?

FYI- when trying to clear the shampoo(or any type of soap)bubbles down the drain, use cold water. It dissipates the soap bubbles faster and you use WAY LESS water💦 This tip is for clearing the bubbles down drain only not the head (technically you could but it’s not terribly comfortable 😱) I live in California where the water rates are high and they like to ration our usage😅I hope you find this info helpful😊👍🏼

@@YVhere No if you put in a leaving in conditioner with a heat protectant and only have the style in for max two weeks. Your curls will revert back and be healthy. I t's when you leave a silk press/ flat iron in for more than two weeks your hair will start breaking because of the lack of moisture.

I use white vinegar to remove the buildup on my scalp. Gets the dirt and excess oil out.

My hair have grown healthy. I've only silk wrap twice a year to keep my hair healthy. You cracked me up when you scold your client. 😆😅
She is not a good client you are constantly telling her to lift her head up
Crystal! I haven't seen you in maybe over a year! You look GREAT, Girl! Keep up the good work and Good to see you! Hugs, Bethany in Palm Springs
