September 30, 1917 - April 2, 1987, hard to believe its been 33 years. I remember hearing the news. For me it was the day music died.

Well stated. It seems like when he left the scene he took an entire era with him and no one has been able to fill the void in three decades. I was thinking the same thing about Oscar Peterson recently and a few other greats from back in the day. So glad I got to see them play live.

@@Drumminman4U That is a fact. We were privilidged to have seen Buddy Rich LIVE. Video is "Swell" ( a Buddy term) But you had to see him LIVE to get all the nuances and fully understand just how great he was.

Pretty good acting from BR considering it’s far from his usual work

I just came across a Miller Time commercial that featured Clark Terry from 1976--it is in the middle of a Steelers v Raiders game posted here on youtube so I wont post it. Did the Miller company like jazz back then or something?

"electric drumsticks"? That's cute, haha. It's a good thing the drumming industrial complex has lobbied hard to prevent the creation of these advanced sticks that would steal our gigs.

I believe Buddy also did a short 30 second spot for a RadioShack Commercial, and also I think a commercial for Mattel electronic Toy drums or some other such nonsense! So yeah buddy had a little cottage industry going plugging things!

I have the Mattel ad on my channel. I’m not familiar with him doing a Radio Shack ad though? ua-cam.com/video/7IPfMAfWIDk/v-deo.html

Drumuitar : yeah the RadioShack thing was like a 30 Second spot I don’t even think buddy said anything it just showed him playing behind what I believe was his Ludwig kit as this was about 1980 or 81 if memory serves! It was just buddy playing in the background while the RadioShack announcer did his thing over the drumming that’s all I remember about it! Probably one of those spots will never be able to find!
Stay in touch by the way I really like that new buddy book one of a kind from Hudson music what’s your opinion of it?!

Neal Sausen I bought One of a Kind from Pelle’s publisher when it originally came out in hardcover. It’s a great book. The only issue, which I presume was corrected with the Hudson release, was the language translation in spots.

Drumuitar : Yes, I have the Hudson edition! the newest/Revised edition, looks like an excellent book! when I’m finished with the book I’m reading now I’ll start on that one!love the cover classic photo from an old Ludwig ad I believe.

Drumuitar : Well I haven’t started reading the new buddy rich book in earnest yet I’m finishing up the excellent wonderful book by Dr. Bruce H. Klauber entitled “GENE KRUPA”
( The pictorial life of a jazz legend).
Once I finish this book I’ll jump in to the new buddy rich book. I have seen the photos though some of which I’ve never seen before and I thought I’ve seen just About everything on Buddy! LOL I have skimmed over sections of the new buddy rich book though it seems excellent!
I talked To my buddy LES De MERLE lately he has and read the new buddy rich book and he raved about it! And if he raves about something you know it’s got to be good!!

Pat is in the front row, Alan Kaplan and Keith O'Quinn in the middle and Greg Hopkins waving in the back row.

Buddy was not a guy who drank. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Oh he may have had 1 every now and again, but he got pretty loopy pretty quick on alcohol. Smoking? Now, that was another matter completely.

He was a legend, but if you have to put famous drummer on the commercial, well, you're not that famous

    • @thecrippledrummer

They did that on all of those old commercials, whether it was an actor, athlete, or whatever.
