  • One great new feature in MacOS Ventura (MacOS 13) is the ability to clean up duplicate images in your Apple Photos library. Photos now automatically detects duplicates, but it's up to you to finish the process and clean them up. This brief tutorial walks you through the basic process and includes tips on working faster, and what to watch out for.
    Note that you'll need to have updated your Mac to Ventura; if you haven't done so already, the process is the same as the previous version, Monterey; details here:

    And if you never learned how to select multiple items at once, that ESSENTIAL skill is covered here:

    I listened to 3 other tutorials and none explained how to merge all duplicates at once. Thank you for your clear and thorough explanation because I had 2,198 duplicates...

    I don't have the duplicate on my sidebar, how do I find it? I am updated to Ventura, when I click on the Photos it doesn't show up , I have several duplictaes, was able to do it earlier today but then the dupliate on the sidebar disappeared Thank you

      Either you haven't updated your computer to MacOS Ventura (check on Apple > About this Mac), or you haven't waited long enough for dupes to show up, or you don't have any!

      That's good news: the Duplicates option is only available if there ARE duplicates. If you saw it before and don't see it now, you have none.

    One problem! The 2 photos it is merging have different dates, years apart. Only one date is correct, when I click "merge" it doesn't let me tell them which date is correct!!

      @computersdotmom  Рік тому

      I noticed that as well in my own photos. I haven't been able to find any documentation yet on how it decides; best suggestion right now is to keep track of the 2 dates and check afterwards to see where it went. I'd guess it will be the earlier one in most cases, but you should see a pattern emerge if you keep doing it.

    Can you do the same with Files?

    • @computersdotmom
      @computersdotmom  6 місяців тому +1

      Not quite as easy or automatic, but there is a way to compare two sets of files and find the ones that are duplicated/different. We have a video for that, too: ua-cam.com/video/eJzPthycAP0/v-deo.html

      @@computersdotmom I just accidentally made copies of 1000 files. But now they are 2000 files, and the ‘copies’ are every second file. I can’t select the copies only because they aren’t together. They are separated by the original files. Now I can’t select them all to delete them.

    • @clboymom9467

      They are all I’m the same area/folder. I’ve tried to sort by date, type etc. But none of that gets the copies together. I can’t individually select each copy and delete them.

    • @computersdotmom
      @computersdotmom  6 місяців тому +1

      @@clboymom9467 search for the word "copy" in the folder and then delete just those. Or, sort them by date, all the copies should be together. then use multiple select to select them all and delete them. (another video!: ua-cam.com/video/TWphLTucvNU/v-deo.html

      @@clboymom9467 This is getting beyond what I can do for free, but searching for the word "copy" IN THAT FOLDER (not "on this Mac") should allow you to group them together.

    And for poor folks still on 10.13.6?

      If you have another Apple device (like an iPhone) that is more up to date, you can also do it there. Otherwise, you're out of luck, sorry! There are paid apps that try to do this but none I've found that were great.

    But wait... If you select ALL, how do you know that isn't just making a single photo out of ALL the thousands that you just selected? There is NOTHING in the UI that explains anything other than this is happening. "Merge all items" means create a single copy from all those that are selected...

    • @computersdotmom
      @computersdotmom  Рік тому +1

      I understand why you would get that impression, but it only merges within the pre identified groups that it shows you. It definitely doesn’t merge all the duplicates into one photo!
