    Thanks for the advice. Usually the companies release new apps or change the actual. It happened with Apple photo app. Sometimes we take too long time organizing things and after everything change. My photos are in chronological order and have titles, it will help me to find them in the all library. I’ll follow careful your UA-cam video instruction because I think to be more practical. My urge music library is another issue, but I’ll take step by step. Thanks so much!

      You are welcome - let me know if you need a hand. Yes you are right apps change but the Photos app has been the same for almost 10 years now, and I doubt it will change dramatically... you can keep your photos in folders and dates but also bring them into the Photos app so you can see them all nicely in one place.

    This video tutorial on Apple Photos is great. Unfortunately, I just discovered it today. Why? I was in search of something for my wife to see since she was having some difficulty. Keep in mind that I was a former Systems Engineer for Apple and worked the education market. I didn't really mess with Photos (the former iPhoto) that much since my specialty was in networking (on iApps there). So, thanks for coming to the rescue.

    Lucas, Hello from a first-timer to your UA-cam channel. I just subscribed. I agree with previous comments --- you provide excellent instruction videos! Like many other folks, I am just beginning to learn Apple Photos on my Mac. Having recently retired, I now can find the long-desired time to think and act on collecting and cataloging my thousands of images. One initial aspect of using Apple Photos that I have not really seen addressed in the many videos I have seen is --- dealing with all of the initial original photos (that will be imported into Apple Photos) and how do prepare source images prior to import and then finally what to do with the source images. Prior to ever using Apple Photos, I have a very healthy computer folder system of my images, so I am working on trying to improve the folder collection before embarking on importing them into Apple Photos. One thing to note is that I have a huge amount of RAW (unprocessed) Canon images, many of which I use for processing into prints, etc, so I love having the RAW images. Now back to my train of thought --- Does Apple Photos do anything with incorporating the folder structure of the originals? Should I create more than one Apple Photos Library for major groups of photos, or just import them ALL to one Apple Photos Library? Then, what do I do with the original images that are on the base computer system outside of Apple Photos? Do I continue to maintain them, adding new originals, then importing those into Apple Photos, allowing the original computer-side image folder structure to grow and be used as an emergency duplicate of all originals (and all photos that are also in Apple Photos), or do I just delete all of the originals that are outside of Apple Photos? As I said, I really have not discovered a discussion on this facet of pre-Apple Photos photo handling and management. Thank you for your great instruction. 😃

      Great to meet you! I help my clients with those exact questions all the time... so maybe it's best we schedule a one on one consult. But the short and more general version of my advice is I would import that batch of named and curated folders/photos into the Photos app. I have a specific way of doing that, that creates albums for each folder you made. So in short your folder names are preserved. Then I set the Photos app to "download originals" when syncing with iCloud, assuming your Mac has enough space. Once the photos have all synced with iCloud and you see them on your phone then you can delete the original files and folders from your Mac but I usually just say move those onto an external hard drive and label it "cold storage, original photos imported into iCloud on X date". Then you only ever interact with the photos from then on, using the Photos app and iCloud Photos. I never, NEVER recommend making multiple Photos Libraries because they are very cumbersome to switch between if you ever want to make a photo book or something like that. I would only ever recommend one Photos Library, synced with iCloud so it shows up on all your devices. Yes the Photos app now does an excellent job with RAW photos. Tons you can do with those!
      For your specific needs and questions we should talk one on one. Book into my calendar if you like - anytime - from this link: macinhome.com/booking/
      Cheers,
      Lucas :)

      @@walterreil4001 You're welcome! Glad to help. When you import the folders into the Photos app go one at a time to start... you drag the folder from your Finder down onto the Photos app on the Dock at the bottom of your screen. Then Photos will open an import window and you'll see a checkbox in the top right for "keep folder organization" which is the one that makes albums based on your folder names.

    • @walterreil4001
      @walterreil4001 4 місяці тому

      Lucas, Again, thank you for this update. A lot to think about to begin with. I am not quite ready to start importing, so this will play importantly in my upcoming effort. So, my idea of still maintaining ALL of my original source images in my external hard drive, adding to them as I take photos, should still work, then only having to import the new photos to Apple Photos as I go. I am noodling on also syncing Apple Photos with iCloud --- I have to look at how much storage I have available in iCloud and how much storage will be required by all of my photos in Apple Photos. As I mentioned in a comment in another video of yours this morning, about death planning, I have an introductory phone call scheduled with Kadir this Wednesday at 10 AM --- when I set up the schedule, Kadir was automatically assigned for the call. Thank you.

    Great tutorial, tkanks! One thing makes me wonder though... if I import photos from an externat SSD to Photos App, where they will be stored? The issue is I have very little internal storage on my Mac. Tahnks for helping and keep up the good work!

    • @lucasmacinhome
      @lucasmacinhome  2 роки тому

      Thank you! :) When you import photos they go *inside* the Photos Library, wherever that is. You can see where the Photos Library is from Photos Preferences. If you are low on storage on your Mac and you have a bigger external SSD it can be a very good move to put the Photos Library on the external SSD. There are some technical steps you would need to do to move it there if it's syncing with iCloud currently though. Feel free to book a time with me and I will help! macinhome.com/booking/

      Sorry for the slow reply! Do you still have this issue? If so I would bet that either your MacBook or iPhone or both are disconnected from iCloud Photo Library. On the Mac you can check that by opening the Photos app, going to the photos menu in the top left -> Preferences, then under iCloud enable iCloud Photo Library. On the iPhone go into Settings, tap your name at the top, iCloud, then Photos. Enable iCloud Photo Library there too.

    Hello, and thanks for this awesome channel.
    I recently got my first Macbook and it automatically downloaded all the photos from my iPhone through iCloud. This auto syncing is making me wonder : will importing pictures from my camera going to add them on the cloud too ? If qo, how could I prevent it ?

      Yes if you import photos from your camera into the Photos app, and iCloud Photo Library is turned on, those photos will go into the main iCloud Library as well. But why would you want to prevent that?

      It's a good question with a not-so-quick answer. I would probably need to see your exact situation. Usually you can find some space to free up in the Mac, otherwise you can use the iCloud feature "Optimize Mac Storage" or "Optimize iPhone Storage" to help with that. Let me know if you still need a hand!

      Good question... this comes up a lot. The actual problem is the hard drive type/speed. If you have a rotational hard drive (spinning platter) with a big photo library, it is always dog slow. Whether it's inside the Mac or on an external doesn't matter. Dog slow. I recommend getting a 2TB or 4TB external SSD and merging those two photo libraries again. This is something I can help you with remotely with FaceTime and screen sharing. I charge 145usd/hr. Happy to do a half hour or 1hr to set you up for success. solutions@macinhome.com

    Hi. I have been using a PC with Windows 10 to backup my pictures to an external hd. Instead of using the Windows photos app, I right click on the memory card, iphone, etc., then choose “import photos”. This places each day’s photos in a separate folder. I like this method rather than the iPhoto method which places all my photos in 1 folder then places in correct order and sorts by date only when viewing with iPhoto app. The problem with this is if, for instance, I copy a batch of pictures to a usb drive, dvd, etc. covering multiple dates, it makes it difficult to find a particular picture, based on the date it was taken, if I’m viewing on anything other than iPhoto! Are there any apps, programs, etc. for Mac that uses this format of saving pictures? Maybe I’m just missing something??

    • @lucasmacinhome

      @reggiem1668 3 роки тому

      Thanks for the response! I didn’t know about the “image capture” app! Definitely closer to what I’m used to, however, I really would like something that auto creates a folder named by date for every picture or batch of pictures taken on any given day. For example, Windows import option I mentioned before will import any picture(s) taken one Jan. 1, 2021 into a folder automatically generated and named 2021_01_01 and so on. I think I can also change the date format if I’d like.
      On a Mac, I can go to finder, change view options to sort by “date created”, then “show date created column” which would work, however, it only keeps the date created info on photos! For some reason all the video files (MP4, AVI, etc) are listed as created on the date they were imported even though they are imported along with the photos!?!

      Adding photos to albums does not move/remove them from All Photos. When you look at All Photos, you will always see all of them in the list even if they are in albums. That's just how Photos works. There are benefits to having it work this way... if you delete a photo from All Photos, then it will delete it from any album it's in. If you do an edit to a photo in All Photos, that edit will show up in all the albums that photo is in. Etc.

      No, not at all. When you move photos into the Photos app you are trusting that app to handle the files and folders behind the scenes, within the "Photos Library" package that lives in the Pictures folder. If you want an app more like Picasa that manages folders in the Finder then I would recommend Adobe Bridge.

      Yeah, good questions... I just checked and I don't see a way to tell if a photo is in an album, from the main All Photos list. What are you hoping to do with those albums? I think they're a tool for grouping things, and it's so easy to delete and recreate them that they don't need to be a static or "forever" thing. I only use albums when I need to turn them into a slideshow or book, or to turn them into a shared album. So I guess my question is "why" - what are you trying to use them for? I bet there's a different way to do it.

      Folders are a tool for organizing multiple Albums. And yeah Albums are similar to labels in Gmail... an album is just a sub-set of the "All Photos" section. There are perks to having it work that way... if you make changes or edits to a photo in the album, it does modify the original that lives in All Photos as well (and you always have the option to "revert to original" with any edits).

    A weird thing happens after I move/rearrange a photo or group of photos within a folder. I select a photo(s), move them to a new location (this often means trying to rapid scroll up or down within the folder's contents), and after closing the app (Mac photos, Version 7.0 (411.0.120)) and coming back to it a few hours/days later, the ones I've moved/rearranged (along with many other photos I didn't move), are scrambled, displaced, and not in the order I had just put them in.
    I've had this problem for a long time -- years -- and it's very, very annoying. I am running the latest version of Mac OS (12.0.1 Monterey), and to make things worse, lately, when I try to grab one or a group of photos to move, I am unable to get the program to even scroll up or down automatically/rapidly like I used to. So I'm forced to move the photo(s) one screen view at a time (talk about annoying!). Another a more recent issue: when I select the photo(s) I want to move, the program then automatically selects a random photo or photos WITH my selection, so that I end moving two or more unselected photos inadvertently (very, very annoying!).
    But for sure, the worst problem is seeing hours and hours of me arranging photos in the order I want them, just to come back to the folder and see them scrambled and disarranged all over again. $99 for a 30 minutes is a lot of money for me, but I'd be willing to pay you IF you are familiar with this technical issue, know how to fix it, and that I don't have to waist 15 of my 30-minute window explaining what I've outlined above.
    Please let me know if you're able to help. Surprisingly, I can find absolutely NOTHING about this on UA-cam or any other tech advice I've tried to find. I'd love to know if anyone else has shared these issues and have any suggestions. Again, I'm open to your services if you understand what's going on and feel you can finally resolve this issue. Honestly I wouldn't bother fighting it... I've never found it to be reliable and I gave up on that as a reliable organizing method. You can only keep them in a certain order when you make a slideshow project. In your shoes if album order was that important I would rename them (command-i) and give them numbers in the front of the file name, then View menu -> Sort -> keep sorted by title. There are too many processes and automatic things in the Photos app that bounce the photo sorting back to date/name.

      Or you can "adjust date and time" from the Image menu to set the dates and then sort by oldest/newest from that same View menu. But keep in mind if you adjust date and time the photos move up or down in the main Library chronology... it affects their main sorting date. Beyond that I would want to know the real/bigger goal and if there's a better way to achieve that goal. Why is it important to keep the order in a way other than date?

      @JeddieT 2 роки тому

      @@lucasroberts4891 ...Hi Lucas, thanks so much for your very insightful response. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it and how frustrating this has been. Even your _"I wouldn't bother fighting it. . . there are too many processes and automatic things in Photos..."_ response is helpful just in acknowledging what this is and knowing that this has to do with Photo's inner demons.
      In fact, this is important to me, for example, as a psychologist, in one folder I collect photos of different psychology-related gifs. In another 'humor' folder, different gifs and photos of humorous pictures, photos, and expressions. In both cases, I acquire them over time and I like sorting and grouping specific related areas of psychology or humor in one area together for easy access when I need to reference them. (e.g., anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorders, or 'Monday morning humor', relationship humor, etc.).
      Because I accumulate these gifs over time, I like to group them together for easy reference -- and not by date. I'm actually surprised this is not a more common practice and therefore more of an issue with Photos and their lack of resolving this problem. After all, they do allow us to move a photo(s) from one spot to another, why does this become so much of a problem when wanting to group many photos over time?
      So sorry about the long-winded response Lucas. Again, I appreciate your suggestions and insights. I suppose I ought to learn how to sub-divide my folders, but at this point I can't imagine how, and there are so many minor areas of reference and cross referencing of my "areas of reference" that that could be daunting. If you have any more suggestions, please feel free to let me know. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time you already have.

      Smart albums I only really use in rare cases... like if a client has an iPhone and also a Canon SLR, and they want to see only photos they've taken with the iPhone...

      I think the best way to explain Smart Albums is, ‘Right Tool, for the Right Job’.
      I would search UA-cam for Smart Albums. There are a lot of excellent descriptions and demonstrations showing the results.
      Smart Albums is something I should use a lot more to obtain specific results, but I keep forgetting to use them!

    If you create albums on your Mac, why don’t the same albums appear on your IPad?

      You definitely will see them on the iPad if you have iCloud Photo Library enabled on both Mac and iPad, which usually also means paying for iCloud storage. This is something I can help with in a remote consult if you want a hand! Just look for Lucas on this page: macinhome.com/booking/

    What are the odds that you have photos from Portugal.

    I am really starting to hate apple; the new soft wear is garbage. music hate it, photos hate it ... I'm trying to make photo albums, the problem I have is half the photos and none of the videos will move across to photos. is there a soft wear that just works everything just works on windows no problems. I am really thinking of turning my 5.1 mac pro into a windows computer ... advise or why is it being stubbing thanks.

      This is usually a learning curve thing. If I can help you understand better what's happening under the hood then you will probably like it more.

    720p in 2020???? I can't go full screen without your video becoming fuzzy and loosing details. I'm using a 27" 4K monitor.

    Good effort, but no value unless you opened the photos app for the first time in your life. Not even any mentions of folders.
