  • Please watch this video before buying a DIY/kit sun shelter. We purchased this Messina/Sojag Sun Shelter from Costco. Shipping and handling was pretty standard. They dropped off a big box on the driveway. I would advise against purchasing something like this if you find putting together ikea furniture difficult. This was a challenging build and it took us about 5 hours to complete. You will need another person to lend you a hand as some of the pieces are just too big for one person. The instructions that come with the kit are pretty basic and sometime misleading.
    Build quality: Frame is made up of exuded aluminum and the roof is galvanized steel. I was impressed with the build quality. Kit came with all the required pieces and some extra nuts/bots.
    Tools/Materials:

    TapCon - amzn.to/30sgAyJ

    I bought a the similar grill gazebo. It says 2 or 3 people needed but I did mine by myself. I had some leftover 2x8's I used to make 3' long temporary "feet". I screwed each leg base into one of these and then the posts would stand on their own. The cross bar can be installed with one loose screw and the other end swung up to line up and attach to the other post. When you're done with all four, just remove the temporary wooden feet and finish the shelter.

      Great idea Robert. Nothing like the satisfaction of doing it all by yourself.

    Got the same exact one, altho ours is labeled as a "Kozyard" brand. Definitely helps to leave the bolts...ALL of them...loose until you have it completed. Can go back and tighten them down then. That little bit of wiggle room really helps and it's noted in the instructions to leave them loose until complete.

    Thank you for the video. Between this video, Sojag's "official" video, and the written instructions, my wife and I were able to put our 10 x 12 Messina model together this past weekend. As noted in this video, step 12 is definitely out of sequence. The installation of the small upper roof panels and and frame were the most difficult part of this assembly, in my opinion. We ended up doing it as shown in Sojag's video...standing the panels in the frame piece, and then putting each section up as a unit.

    Just ordered 10x12 and should get it this weekend, what size / type bolts would you recommend anchoring into deck? Might not be able to get all 4 corners lined up directly on top of a joist / beam.

    Good video, thanks for sharing you experience. I purchased the same shelter but haven't assembled it yet as I'm trying do decide whether to paint my house first. The shelter is going on my back patio so if I install it then paint later I'll have to unbolt it and move it a few feet out of the way temporarily. Question, is the weight of the shelter such that with a person at each leg you could pick up the shelter and move it a few feet?

  • @donaldso718

    Why didnt you put in the longer bolts of the roof panels that run along the middle while you were up there? In my opinion that was the main part that required 2 people because you need someone on the other side to tighten those bolts. And it's easier doing those bolts as you go before having all the panels installed.

    About to build one for someone, alone. Wouldn’t it be easier to build the roof then install the legs under it?

    • @drambuild9800
      @drambuild9800  3 роки тому

      You might scratch the finish. Roof is heavy and it’s strength comes form the roofing panels.

    • @donaldso718
      @donaldso718 3 роки тому +2

      you really can't put together the roof without the base first. also you'd probably need a minimum of 4 people to lift the roof up if you did the roof first. I assembled my 12x16 mostly by myself. You just need another person when it comes to the roof panels to tighten some of the bolts.

      One of my posts was made wrong. You could see where the guy putting in the rivet at the shop pressed too hard because the tool slipped and marred the finish noticeably. Probably had a close to dead battery on a Friday and he wanted to go home so he tried to force it. Anyway, Sojag asked for pics and then shipped me a new one. Great customer service.

      We have the same one, just fabricated a cross-plate at the top to mount the fan. didn't take too much to get it done and looking nice. would be nice tho if it came with such a plate/crossbar from the factory.

      @@trooper5157 I would be interested to get some details on what you did for the fan support.

    • @trooper5157
      @trooper5157 2 роки тому +1

      @@1767SR i could email you pics if you'd like. in short tho, i used perforated round angle (metal L shaped supports, with lots of holes like an erector set) to build a framework that goes across the inside of the cupola area. I used more of it to make crossmembers for added support and support of the electrical box for the fan itself. we bought a slightly smaller ceiling fan since a standard sized one would have to hand further down due to the pitch of the roof. once i had it built to size, i prmed and painted it with a textured spray paint that matched the dark brown color of the gazebo and ran power to the fan using an exterior grade extension cord with one in plugged into an exterior outlet and the other end (plug cut off) wired into the electrical box of the fan. to attache the frame to the roof, i was able to use only existing bolts that were factory so I didn't have to drill any added holes. the whole thing blends in and looks like it was made to be there. After awhile I didn't like seeing the holes in the round angle bars so i bought some strips of metal that were the same width, painted them and bolted them to the bottom of the round angle frame for a cleaner look. all in all, came out very well.

    • @1767SR
      @1767SR 2 роки тому

      @@trooper5157 Thanks for the quick reply! And thanks for the detailed information. So the framework you built goes inside the cupola area, correct? I assume that means you had to do away with the mosquito netting that normally covers the opening?
