- I have a considerable amount of you who ask me about bags you're looking at, and you want to know if they're good first-time bags.
Here are my thoughts, 5 of the WORST (imo) first time bags, as well as 5 of THE BEST bags to buy to start your collection!

My first (and only bag, to be honest) is a Dolce & Gabbana leather “man” purse years back. I still have it in its dust bag 😅
Hi Sophie ! Personally I would go for a BVL Serpenti handbag to start building up my collection . The quality is stunnig and the design itself is very modern / classic . Despite the fact that we are complaining nowadays about Chanel quality etc we must admit that the classic flap ( born in 1955 !! ) still makes our hearts beat quicker and it is a must on wishlists .
Best advice is to find silhouette that works best for you - whether boston bag, hobo, dome satchel, camera bag, bucket, tote, etc. and what fits into your lifestyle and wardrobe. Whether it's a crossbody, satchel, backpack, or tote - determine what size and style works best for you. I recommend steering clear of odd silhouettes like train cases, crescent bags, barrel bags, for a first designer bag, but go with what you love. Look at your favorite current bags and ask yourself what you love about them. Try on bags from any store and determine what silhouette fits your body frame, and what style you like, fabric, leather, etc. When you discover the silhouette and type of bag that fits your frame, take a look at your favorite designers and find the right leather or fabric that suits your climate, wardrobe, and lifestyle. Keep in mind, you can always dip your toe into the pool and find a great pre-loved bag as well! You don't always have to shop at the designer store. Something else to consider is that contemporary brands like Coach are giving fresh takes on classic silhouettes and offer a variety of really quality bags for under $1000. I actually even prefer several of them to my designer bags. Finally, don't go into debt over it and worry about it so much that you can't actually enjoy wearing your bag! At the end of the day, it's an accessory used to help express your style and a means of carrying your stuff around. Finally, take care of your bags. Keep them stuffed with paper when not in use, to keep the structural integrity - and clean and condition your bags - and they will give you years of enjoyment!

That is a gorgeous and iconic bag. It definitely holds is value. Great for everyday but not versatile enough for other uses which is why I didn't buy it as my first one. So I bought the speedy instead but if I can ever afford it, the loewe puzzle is 3rd or 4th on my list.
My first bag was a Louis Vuitton speedy. In classic monogram. I think that’s a great first bag. Now I’m venturing out into Chanel and Louis Vuitton leather. Thanks for sharing your videos.
My first real designer bag 3 years ago was small Givenchy Antigona in black mock croc. It is still one of my favorite bags in collection and I would recommend it to anyone as a great first bag. Fits a lot, holds shape, classic design and it can be found on sales very often. Also doesn't hold price so well and it can be find for ok price on the second hand market.

In my opinion the best first bags are from YSL, incredible leather quality for a fair price, and I believe most of their bags are classics. My first two bags were YSL and I couldn’t make a better choice.

I use a lot of cross body bags, so my opinion is to go for a shape that you keep going back to. I don't own any really high end bags, but I do have some from Mulberry, Jerome Dreyfuss and Coach.

Great list! My first bag over $1,000 was the Loewe anagram tote and I am loving it. It’s classic, simple with a great structure. Ive never seen anyone else with it.

For me, the fact that you don't see anyone else with a bag is a huge plus - if it's too ubiquitous I tend to go off something. I also love it when it's not too obvious which brand something is.
@@danishpastry6137 haha agree! That’s why, even though some bags are nice, I have never bought a LV bag. The monogram is so recognisable (not to mention copied like crazy). Loewe, celine (more expensive) and even YSL (although some bags have big hardware logos) are all great options.
My first bags were in the late 90's, a Fendi crossbody and a Gucci bamboo handle bag ( Tom Ford era). I still have both. Then I ventured into Louis Vuitton. Sold all 6 of those bags earlier this year. Not into LV at all anymore. Vintage Chanel and Fendi are my favorite bags.
I never got into Prada bags. I do love their sunglasses.
Dior was prime for me when John Galliano was head of design.
Coach makes realy good bags , i love them, good quality and leather . Love your Videos 😍

Good tips and yes be realistic with what your lifestyle dictates. I bought my first LV years ago and bought a more casual style because I knew I was going to retire and not use a more formal or business looking bag.
As far as the little Alma bag… I went to the LV store and was extremely disappointed with the quality of the canvas and zipper compared to my older bag.
The store had 2 Alma’s and one had a wonky zipper! Even the SA was a bit embarrassed!
My husband was ready to buy it for me but I just told him no I can’t justify paying $1800. for a real LV that looks like a knock off!!
Ended up with my first Gucci Ophedia small cross body tote and love the feel of the canvas and zipper.

22 yrs ago while I was moving & I threw out an LV Speedy bc I thought it had seen better days. Hindsight is always 20/20 but I really regret tossing it today.😥 Still have my 1st Gucci Boston tho

My first bag was the Chloe Joan mini, which I cannot recommend enough, even though it’s small it fits my glasses, wallet and keys ( I use a key wallet) and it was under £300!
YSL bags are my first 2 bags: a Lou camera bag and small Loulou bag. Classic style and priced well. Quality is really good.
My first designer bag is the LV pochette metis in reverse. I chose it as canvas is worry free and the satchel style is very classic. Though I'm not sure if the reverse monogram will be dated, I still prefer it than having the classic monogram with vachetta.

I STILL have a thing for the Valentino rock stud bags. The one you have theres just something about it that always draws me in! But I’ve never pulled the trigger and bought one myself…
I’ve just bought a mini capucines from the stardust collection and my GOD It’s gorgeous. Coming from the girl who only owns black handbags…. I got the Vert d'eau Green with the mother of pearl logo and it is to DIE for. But still, probably my first and only non-black bag.

My first designer bag was was purchased in 2020. Its a YSL small camera bag that has since been discontinued. I still use it every time I go out as the YSL logo is embossed leather, understated, and goes with everything!

I’ve thought about the reedition in nylon for a while but you’re totally right. I’m not sure when I’ll get my first bag but it won’t be that lol
I have a LV Cannes bag, which I bought in the spring, and I’ve used it more than all my other bags. Granted, it’s patent white, black, and red which, admittedly, might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but these are my colours so it goes with most of my clothes. It’s also different, I haven’t seen anyone else with it. I hesitated at first, because of its shape and bold, mainly white, colour, but I have zero regrets. I wish I could say the same about my more muted, classic bags 😅
My picks are based on classic shape, staying power season after season, quality, usability, and price- the Givenchy mini Antigona, the YSL Lou camera bag, the Alma BB in epi leather, the Gucci Soho Disco (she’s my current workhorse), the Gucci Marmont camera bag, and the Prada small or mini Galleria tote. I have a real love of camera bags, and the Lou or Marmont, can go day to night easily. After trial and error, I cannot recommend a bag smaller than 8 in/20.3 cm L x 5 in/12.7 cm H if you’re going to use it in regular rotation long-term. Some of these mini bags are adorable, but not so practical! Great video as always, Sophie. Love to you and your lovely David.
I think it's helpful to think about the purpose of the bag: Do you want a nice evening bag? Something for daily wear? Something that is more chameleon and can be dressed up? Do you want a small, versatile collection, or do you plan to make this one of many you plan to own over time? At the end of the day, you need a day bag, an evening bag, a work bag, and something travel friendly. I think it's best to first build an essentials collection that fits your overall fashion and work lifestyles, then see what quirky things you want beyond that, if you've come to have a more nuanced appreciation for a fashion brand through establishing it and bag collecting more generally.

My first bag was the Louis Vuitton Neverfull PM / my LV heritage collection. I loved selecting the lining color, how I wanted the striping to look, adding my initials, etc. I would say if you want something classic yet customized just for you it is a good way to go.
The Prada leather re-edition in Black and White is amazing. Have gotten so much wear/cost and I haven't grown tired of it in 1.5 years :) Very versatile with the casual strap and the gold chain. You can switch it up for any occasion!

I personally think the LV speedy 25 bandouliere in canvas is a great first high-end bag. It is exceptionally versatile, still not crazy expensive, good quality, classic and holds its value. It is a great day/weekend bag but also if you tie a cute silk scarf to the handle or a chain, it can easily be used for dinners out etc. It is also a good investment that if you want to sell it you can get your money back as it is one of those bags steadily increasing in price like the flap and the lady dior due to its iconic style.
My first bag was a Chanel maxi but the mistake was that it was patent leather 😫 I already parted with it because I was to afraid to wear it much and it was over $3k. At the same time I have a vintage Louis bag that was only $400 that I get a ton of is from and a huge all leather Versace tote that came with an insert for only $600 and that was brand new! I get more use out of these two bags alone that the my first ever Chanel even tho I love the look of that one best. I love how you emphasize value of the materials as well as wearability. If a bag doesn’t have at least those two things in common I know I won’t get much use out of them regardless of how pretty they are!
1st bag was canvas The Tote mini, 2nd was the same in leather. Love them both! My 3rd will be the Prada Cahier but not sure which design yet 😂
My first full price, brand new designer bag was purchased a few months ago and I went with a small Celine 16 which doesn't hold its value, the price is a bit high, and it doesn't seem like a popular bag at all, but that's kinda why I like it. I like that I can wear it with just jeans and and a tshirt and doesn't look out of place and that it has a very subtle logo that you have to look for on the turnlock.
I’ve had a Louis speedy, the Gucci Love velvet bag, and I’ve sold them. My first official “high end” designer bag was the Dior saddle bag (bought at the outlet store)- the navy camo one, with the classic navy strap (it matches perfectly) and I adore it so much, it’s so sophisticated, and I can really dress it up or down, and you can’t go wrong with navy. But like you said, it’s each to their own, I now have the little Louis Vuitton mini Palm Springs too (bought at the pre loved store) and I’ve used to to death! And they still look fantastic. And then the other day I purchased my first celine, it’s the red quilted bumbag (bought from tk Maxx)😅 and I can’t get enough of it. Now I’m definitely one for buying with the potential to resell if needed. But I think when buying a bag, when you know, you know. And if you have any doubts and you’re unsure, I think then you’ve got your answer. And if you can’t get it out of your mind… go for it 🤩

Agree wholeheartedly Sophie! Important not to go for those trend pieces otherwise you’ll soon sell it after its had its hey day. I made that mistake with my first bag which was the Murakami black multicolor buckle bag. I only wore it a handful of times and ended up buying a speedy 25 in damier which I still use as my everyday bag 10 yrs later! 😱😆

Alma BB is very useable, I have two of them and I always reach for them.
My first bag was a Speedy 30 in Damier Azur, which I absolutely loved to death, but quickly realized I needed a shoulder strap for a bag that big so I sold it and got the Speedy B also in the 30, in monogram. Absolutely no regrets. I think a first luxury bag should be a combination of form + function + brand you love. Trend items are a lot of fun, but putting your money into something you will want to use a lot, especially in the beginning of you rcollection, is more important to me.
Great suggestions 🙏🏻 Very honest and straight to the point of “what do I really need”. Would you consider a video telling more about YSL, LV, Gucci (?) belonging to the same corporation? That’s pure mkt generating chaos and misleading us buy one thing over other. All products from the same factory.

I recently got that YSL camera bag in monochrome black for my first luxury bag. I'm in love with it!
My first bag was a preloved bag, a LV Eva clutch. I had it for a long time butI wasn't able to use and enjoy it much so I sold it for a good price , and that started my whole addiction obsession with luxury bags. If I hadn't sold it will be my one and only cherished bag, and I will be blissfully unaware of the lux community and saved my money.
My first bag was the Balenciaga motorcycle bag, back in the early 2000’s! And to be fair, I still love that bag! My most recent ones is the neon green and blue LV from Virgils last collection and the Fendi shearling baguette (which I love). Even if it is a trend bag, I will always wear it, if it’s a bag I love ❤️ Take for instance the prada monolith boots, that was definitely a trend piece, but I love those boots and will wear them as long as they hold up 😂 I will be buried in those boots haha x
My first bag was Chloe and I think all of their bags are trendy pieces. It also didn’t keep value but I loved it during the time I had it.

My 1st bag was the alma bb, my 2nd was the gucco ophedia print crossbody, 3rd is the ysl mini lou camera bag. I rarely wear my alma bb it's a bit cumbersome to use. But I love my Bottega dumpling pouch Inspired bag way more 😆
I would say I cannot agree on the Prada Nylon quality. I bought this bag almost three years ago and I am using it to death. I washed it in the washing machine (!!), it went with me through countless travel, I literally don’t look after it as much as I do for my other bags and honestly it looks so good. There is barely any scratches, no stitching gets ruined, the small leather elements are still untouched. I also get so much use of it- it’s versatile, it fits with both casual outfits for a day out and you can easily wear it for a night out (I have the 2005 re-edited with the small chain btw) and it fits quite a lot of stuff. My first ever bag was Alma before I bought the Prada and I get way more use of the Prada…
My first was a tote and i was asvised by the ca. I years later discovered i am a top handle gal and thats why i barely wore that tote
In my humble opinion ☺️ if you don't have stable money income,your own home, car... The big purchase. You don't need a new super expensive bag. THE BEST WAY IN THAT MOMENT IS BUYING SECOND HAND 🙂 UNIQUE AND WITH HISTORY!
And you will find it easier to use it everyday. Then keep it in a dust bag for years, because, it's not the "right moment" for that bag🛍️
I would say there is no one-size-fits-all best first bag. I think the most important tip is for buying your first/only bag is to know yourself, what you love, your style, your needs, and your goals. My first bag is the LV Speedy B 25 in DE - probably the most classic bag there is! I regret it because I am not a classic gal - I love funky and loud things, but I just kept hearing about how the Speedy is so classic and a must-have. If you can only have one, figure out your bag fashion first: try on dupes at high street stores. Check out different bags at the real stores. Take your time!

Was eyeing on the half moon bag since last week and checking the website this morning Gucci just raised the price of the half moon bag is now £975… insane.
When you were talking about the BV, you said you saved up some points. May I ask what you're referring to? Are you referring to points through designer stores?
Sophie, we all make mistakes with our first luxury bag! Lol...I bought a small chanel boy that I absolutely loved at the time, and 2yrs later I didn't like it anymore either and sold it. 🙈🙈🙈

I absolutely detest massive logos, brand names splashed all over. I do own vintage, LV luggage in monogram canvas as carry on only - because it wears like IRON. Never any handbags with logos though. If I'm going to advertise for a designer, the price needs to reflect that. (Turnlock integrated logos are OK with me, the discreet Chanel 'CC" as example).
I also do not like logos splashed all over that much. The only exception I made is for the LV speedy in 25 I got as my first bag. I needed a day bag and wanted to collect all the iconic bags that have passed the test of time and hold their value. That was the only kind of those iconic bags that I could afford at the time. If I could afford more then I would get the lady dior in medium and I think I wouldn't care of having any other bag ever lol.
Can you give more details on why not the Dior saddle bag? I am tempted to buy it in black leather. Is it just because it’s a trend bag or also because of the weird shape?
I like to buy a Prada bucket hat. Not a handbag. My first Luxury bag was a Louis Vuitton bag.

I would stay away from YSL and balenciaga unless it’s preowned.. I don’t get YSL, it feels like basic bag they slapped made in Italy on and pretend it’s nice. I like YSL clothes and accessories though. I loved the preloved Cabas Piano I had as first bag.. wish they would bring that bag. Best first bag is whichever will get most daily use!
I don't like anything Gucci but I love Valentino! Their bags are much better quality than other brands mentioned in the video..

I think Valentino, Versace & Bottega are kind of garish. Maybe not so much Bottega but Versace? No thank you. My first bag, which I still have 12 or so years later is my plaid Poppy Coach. Have you taken a look at Poléne bags? I’m dying for the Numero Sept and the Cyme bag. Absolutely gorgeous!

Never got the Prada nylon bags. I wouldn´t buy nylon clothes, why would I pay big money for it in a bag? My first ´designer designer´ bag is the Chloe Tess, and while I regret nothing about it, I actually gravitate more towards my bags from more contemporary, obscure-ish brands

What I’d suggest for a first bag is Jacquemus Grand Chiquito bag!It’s big,stylish,has many wear options and it fits a nice amount of things inside!Also the price compared to the rest is a STEAL!Def worth a shot imo👌🏻

I’m on the Fendigraphy train. I really enjoy using it. The price has gone up since it first launched. Fendi has it in the fall-winter show so even if it’s a trend bag, it should last for few more seasons. 😊

The small black 00' Prada bag is simply distasteful, it looks cheap and has no class what so ever! None of these bags would ever enter my home, not even the tiny round Louis Vuitton even though I love LV for many reasons, but for me a bag should be timeless, kind of all-around and sophisticated. Trendy is simply not something that I would want to waste my money on.

Bottega Jodie has been around from the 90s.
That is why it is definitely not a trend.
Bottega always used to be very popular, but only around old money croud
As the first (and perhaps only) bag I would not buy a moon-shaped bag or a hobo bag, because it is not a classic shape, even if it tends to come back into fashion over the years (like everything else). In any case, I agree that we have to buy what we really like, regardless of fashions

I LOVE the LV speedy as a first high-end bag. I think everyone into designer should have one in their collection because it is so iconic. I got the 25 bandouliere in canvas. It is also so versatile I can use it during the day and when I go out in the evening as well (though I hope to add the lady dior as my evening bag when I have the money someday). It also holds its value very well. Resale market for speedy is still holding strong.
For the Dior bag I'm on the fence. Galliano was head of Dior for years and was highly successful. Raf Simons failed at Dior and did not complete his 5 year standard contract (the same happened at Calvin Klein). Chiuri, like Galliano is successful and if you look at the years she put in at Valentino I do not think she is looking to move any time soon.

That’s because it’s about commercial appeal not design. Maria does well because she does basic ish with Dior stamped evrywhere. Raf was a much better designer but at the big brands theh need shit to seek to customers who just want logos everywhere to flex. Look at what’s happened to tisci at Burberry or gheswuire and lv bits that’s what’s required to sell
@@Nopi9 I am not a fan a Raf, personally I thought he did a horrible job at Dior and Calvin Klein. He made collections no one wanted, I think Prada is a better fit for him design wise. Over Maria's tenor (HC and R-T-W) there are tones of garments without the logo, the fashion shows are on the internet and one can see that they are not logo driven. The Couture (and many of the R-T-W) is very detailed and one can see videos on Dior's UA-cam page that delve into the process of making a collection.
My first bag was a Mulberry Bayswater in the tan colour. I’ve since added to my Mulberry collection with another 3 bags. You don’t seem to mention Mulberry, is there a reason for that?
