Hey friends! What do you think about this topic?! For me, Chanel classic flap is the BEST iconic bag to own (second perhaps to Hermes!)…but, not for their new prices. What do you think?xx

Preloved/vintage is the way. 😎 I will say, at the end of the day, these are just bags. I have had Gucci, Fendi, LV etc. I always wanted a Chanel. My husband bought me one for my birthday few years back and even though it's beautiful and lovely, it doesn't change your life. At all. If I didn't have it or sold it, my life would go on the exact same. Anyone going into debt or thinking these bags are life altering, don't do it. Maybe it's just where I am in life, but putting so much hard earned money into these bags is actually ridiculous. I'd rather have it in the bank.😎
I really appreciated this video as it was super honest and I hope it resonates worldwide. If Hermes is charging the same prices for a handmade piece with unsurmounted craftsmanship, Chanel should be doing the same. Otherwise, their new prices are not justified whatsoever. What Chanel is doing is quite shameless imo and I wouldn’t feel proud wearing it. I’d just feel like a sucker with no brains 😅
LOL that reminds me of how Alex from hrh was saying she doesn't like wearing her chanel bags even though she bought them years ago cuz she doesn't want people thinking she spent that much on them 🤣
@@nordette there's the crime/safety issue and ironically people don't want to look like they're wealthy anymore. That's an effect of the current economic situation and inflation is dividing people more and more.
Although there is no denying that Hermes quality are most of the time (not always 😉) amazing quality, Hermes bags are not fully handmade. I respect your comment but I love Chanel and don’t feel like a sucker with no brain 🤷🏼♀️love my collection just like I love Hermes ❤
Luxury is how a bag makes you feel and spending a huge sum on a bag of poor quality is not luxurious. The big brands are playing us and we need to stop playing the game. There are so many new fresher brands who'd appreciate our patronage. 😊❤️
It would seem the game they are playing is one of desire and that the more expensive it is the possibility of desire can be met which leads to a more expensive bag being desired ?
I totally agree. As a fashion design student I want to support fellow up and coming fashion designers. There are luxury items I have always wanted but the quality in these brands keeps dropping and the prices increasing. This is why im questioning if buying a bag like that.
I honestly tried to stay away from the Chanel CF because of the price. But I really really wanted it and I bought other bags that were similar and I just ended up spending more money on bags that I didn’t really love. So I ended up selling them at a lost and got the cf that I wanted. To me it was a big mistake not to just go for it. Now I own 2 and I am super happy with them. They cost me a lot of money but I will never get rid of them like I did for the other bags that I didn’t really love at the end of the day.
Hi Sophie 🥰 love your videos I’ve come to terms with never owning a Chanel bag, I’ve wanted one since I got into luxury, but I always thought they were very expensive, yet I was always hopeful that one day 🤞 But Now with the awful quality and the poor after sale care and the poor customer service plus the “exclusivity” and hard to get common pieces, it has finally turned me completely off. They are overpriced trash to me now, and I’m okay with it 😆 if the service and quality is bad, then I’m sorry that is not luxury.
I also came to terms with never owning one. Actually, I am not into bags in general anymore. I bought a second hand Gucci bag for everyday use that fits my laptop and some personal things. In my personal time, I like to have something light and small that just fits my phone, keys, glasses and a lipstick. Recently I bought a small Italian leather bag that was not expensive. Wallets/cardholders etc are a thing of the past. I have everything in my phone!
Recently I went on vacations to a greek island called Paros. At night all the women would use the branded bags (chanel, lowew, dior, gucci etc…) and it feels so boring and repetitive… Dont get me wrong, I like bags but why is so important these days the bag you are using?
My mind can't compute the crazy prices now. If you're mega-loaded, fine...but to save up sooo much of our hard-earned money for a bag is just 🤯 I got a WoC a few years ago (preloved) and it will be the only Chanel I ever own, and I'm totally happy with that.
I couldn’t agree more. I bought a Chanel wallet and it fell apart and looks terrible so that was my indication to not buy new Chanel. The quality is not there. With vintage Chanel the quality is there. Those are so worth it! My holy grail is the xl jumbo flap with the large cc 🥰
Honestly I’m glad I’m not into Chanel because of the quality issues! I’m not going buy Chanel even second hand! You’re better off buying Hermes Kelly/ Berkin/ Constance and get a quality peace to last!
I always change my mind when it comes to fashion. We are lucky to have the freedom to evolve as we please, regardless of what others might think. I rarely if not ever think of what others think of me so that helps👽
You and I are very similar Cecilia, I’m forever changing my mind and tastes these days! I’m keeping hold of a lot more now and not selling things as I often like going back to things xx😘😘
Keep it for your children or at the very least for a few more decades. It’s an investment piece that will at the very least keep its value or keep increasing in value. With the dollar crashing, it’s a good idea to keep your money tied up in an item that will hold that value
The thing with Chanel is that market and demand shifts depending on the size is most on demand. In the US in 2013 when I bought my first CF, the jumbo was the “it” size so it retained the value in the preloved market. It’s been about three years or so that the small CF is the one that retains the highest value. Now although minis are always in high demand, the minis in caviar are truly in extremely high demand, and they are going for double in the preloved market. As per myself, I love my CFs and don’t regret the ones I own and still love!
I love the Chanel classic flap since I was a little child. I worked hard and I can shamelessly admit that the success I have in my career is Chanel driven lol 😂 I only wear classic flaps, and I was on my journey of collecting them in many colors. Chanel prices had always been too much, and I never look at resale value. The value I put on them is how much I love them and how often I wear them. However, I have stopped purchasing Chanel for about 6 months now, because I can’t justify the price to the quality. If they had at a minimum kept the quality of the bags as it was late 2019.. then I think it would still be worth it. But, not at the current quality.
Chanel raised their prices too much despite drop I quality. Classic flaps are everywhere on the preloved market and the older bags are better quality. Surely we prefer to pay less for better quality 😁
Hi Sophie! This is just a random thought but do you think that if the resale value of those bags keeps increasing, it might eventually lead to a "market crash"? I am just thinking about the fact that the preloved market is generally an option to save money and/or accommodate customers on a budget. If the *resale* value of a Chanel classic bag reaches for example more than $10k, the pool of potential customers gets much smaller. The issue is that the customers who are wealthy enough to afford to spend over $10k on a pre-loved bag are probably the kind of customers that can also afford (and might equally prefer) to pay a few extra thousands to get a brand new bag at the boutique... This is just a random thought based on the idea of inflation prior to economic crisis, let me know what you think :)
And actually I’ve been wondering about the market for the new ones too crashing. Seems like they are losing a lot of their base customers. But I guess that’s the plan anyways.🤷♀️
to be honest i agree with everything you’ve said in this video FOR NOW, and let me explain myself here, i do think what Chanel is trying to do is match Hermès but i think it goes even deeper than that... i think down the line they will make the bags even MORE expensive so that normal people kinda stop buying em and will be even more strict about that 2 bags a year thing with the people who still wanna buy em to make these bags more of a rare species with time. and for them to be more valuable in 20 to 30 years. which i think will work for them actually...
I don’t think it will with the way they are doing it. Hermes had reason to increase their prices and the quality on their pieces are mind-blowing. While Chanel’s quality is even worse than many coach bags I have owned and cost a fraction of the Chanel price. What do you think people will buy when they have that kind of money? Chanel or Hermes? Chanel reminds me of other brands who have tried to become more “high-end” simply with price increases without delivering quality and it later backfired on them. It takes some serious level of narcissism for a brand to think people are that stupid to want to pay that much for a factory made bag when they have better options. I am an example who has now moved on to purchasing Hermes. I would much rather put my money there than get a headache from quality issues with a Chanel bag. At least until Chanel considers matching their quality to their price which I don’t believe will happen under the current ownership.
@@SummeRain783 Well said! I agree with everything you said! I’m a loyal Hermès customer for years. I just don’t understand the strategy behind Chanels decisions. It’s definitely gonna backfire.
I dont really agree. They arent houses or land. At some point, people will just decide that it is not worth it anymore and will stop buying. Even the "not normal" people as you put it. There are also already so many of these bags floating around out there. No one is going to pay 20k for a handbag. Even if someone tried to flip it, it would be sold as a loss. It looks like the maximum people will pay for a chanel medium caps at around 5,000. The reason why Hermes works is that they chose who they sell their bags to, while anyone who has money can get a classic flap. There are also a lot of fakes of the classic flaps so I do see a that they are getting overexposed already, especially due to influencers.
This is a great video. I purchased most of my Chanel bags almost 30 years ago! I can’t believe it either. Back then I paid $2450. 00 for a med limited edition flap with number on the inside. ( 25?) I paid about 3800 for a briefcase that’s gorgeous. My coats and suits were a fraction of todays prices. I’d never spend $8000. On my bags today. Honestly I think part of it is - a) I’m vegan, but more so even it seems so wasteful and it’s just a bag. I say this from a place of age obviously I’m much older than most of your subscribers and as you age for me I don’t need to flaunt my wealth and I do not find those who do as being more stylish or attractive. That’s just me tho. 💚💚🤗
Luxury for me is about a smooth, comfortable experience with no hassle even in the long run and excellent quality. I don’t feel like Chanel is any good at that. 😅 I still think the jumbo is beautiful though.
I have a medium classic flap in black caviar leather & while I love it, it is really true that it doesn't hold that much which really surprised me. The YSL Mini Puffer bag actually holds way more than my classic flap. The current prices for these bags is ridiculous & I tend to agree with other commenters here that have said Chanel is really trying to put these bags out of the reach of us everyday working people who save money to buy a Chanel bag.
I don't own any Chanel and was thinking about it until I saw a few videos about defective items. For whatever reason, this cheapened it my eyes and now it all looks...tacky?
I agree, I bought a few of the medium/ large and mini Chanel bags as my first designer ones but the only ones I really wear are both minis. I feel the large and medium sizes are slightly impractical, it’s not like I can wear them to work and I hardly go out anymore- With the price increases I can’t imagine buying this now, I feel like there are cheaper bags that are more well made and wearable that are appropriate for work/everyday wear
I think the classic flap is still the HG bag of chanel because of all the beautiful colors they come out with. There is something for everyone. If you know you want it, save for it
Agree with everything you said! I scored a vintage chanel boy bag for $1400 CAD at thrift store, my dream bag🤗 but I did purchase the Burberry Lola in a amazing blue color, resale value… I don’t care because I love everything about it: my favorite color light blue, quilting, chain, so soft lambskin.
The next chanel bag I get will definitely be preloved or consignment. Unless they are new seasonal ones. There's so much choice when you love prelove market (for classic flap) and for the most part, they are selling same or cheaper than brand new.
This was so helpful! Thank you for posting this. I think price is no object when you can work hard and save for something, but when you're absolutely being gouged for an extra $4k is INSANE.
I personally think that we should buy a bag that suits our lifestyle. The flap has never suited mine but I’ve always appreciated it.I also think for me personally I don’t buy luxury as investment bc I don’t have an intention to sell. So ur point about it’s not a good buy is spot on - if u change ur mind in a years time u won’t get ur money back and that is scary. I think the bag should suit u aesthetically also my look always changes - so for me I would only wear a Chanel bag at a function so a smaller bag would suit better.
People should just buy what they truly love. Sometimes you fool yourself with things you don’t love because you think it’s too expensive, but you will always want a specific bag. At this point everything went up in price. We act as if Chanel is the only brand that has gone up. For example Balenciaga cagole was $2200(CAD) plus taxes beginning of last year and it’s about $3000 (CAD)+ so in just over 1yr the bag has gone up about 35% and continues to rise 1-2x per year. I think if Chanel is your dream bag, go for that vs owning 2-3 less loved bags. Also comparing it to Hermes. Although Hermes increases don’t seem as big, their spend amount to get a bag increases yearly - so it’s all about perspective. I don’t love many items from Hermes so the bag might cost about the same as Chanel jumbo, but Only after I buy a ton of items I don’t really care to own…
love how you broke down your change of mind, really doing your name justice yet again with your sophisticated articulation xx I absolutely agree with you, i'm just now starting my luxury journey and am nowhere near the position of buying a chanel just now, but i've casually checked their website today and nearly went into shock when i saw the price tag. almost 9700 euros for the large classic flap which i'd love to own one day, but now it seems like i'd be paying way over 15k by the time i can afford it. such a shame. i get they're keeping the brand exclusive that way, but i feel like they're not nearly prestigious to demand prices close to hermés. just my two cents. thanks for the great content once again Sophie xx
I’m one of the lucky ones who got a Medium classic flap for $5k USD, still expensive but I beat the crazy price increases. I feel ok with it being my only classic flap.
I do love the classic style of the Chanel Flap bag but price wise, you are so spot on. The constant price increases of luxury brands is just ridiculous. And I’m glad you are on board with vintage bags. I literally just sent a 27 year old LV Samur 30 to LV for Vachetta and hardware replacement. The cost of the vintage bag was $250 from a seller in Japan. The cost of all Replacement and canvas cleaning at LV will be $1,300. Pricey? Yes but the cost is less than the new bags LV is selling. Thank you for such an honest video!
Thanks for your always true opinions Sophie! I think the Chanel prices is so high because of the hype not because the quality. But I still waiting on the right Chanel mini bag to come back to the market. /Marie from Sweden
I have a designer resell boutique in Brighton, Kat’s kingdom and a lady brought in a gorgeous vintage Chanel bag for me to sell , 80/90s and the quality is great ! I have 2 vintage and 2 new Chanel and the vintage quality is def better ! And priced a hell of a lot better 😅
Thanks for keeping us updated on value for money. I feel I can’t wear Chanel with the logo in San Francisco because I could get robbed just for the bag in addition to my money. It’s crazy here. So I’ve been looking at understated bags. I did look at Launer in addition to Moynat and other brands with no logo. I adore my Chanel mini and would love more in different colors. I can’t justify having more that I can’t wear everyday.
Actually the small classic flap is more expensive than a Kelly 25 which to me is mind blowing because from what I’ve seen people who are comparing the qualities of Chanel and Hermes said that the quality of Hermès is far superior to Chanel. But I think the prices are getting ridiculous that it’s actually putting me a little bit off… With everything going on in the world I just don’t see how the prices are gonna keep going up. I have heard that people think that actually luxury brands are trying to make luxury goods available only for really really rich people and like billionaires and stuff like that but in my opinion the billionaires and really really really rich people already have the classics and so they’re not gonna keep buying the same bags, so my question is how is that going to affect their sales because surely middle-class everywhere is like struggling a little bit?
Agree! This purse has gotten so pricey but the quality has decreased, it's really inspired people to go the fake route. I see these old lady bags (real or not) now and think FAKE.
I’m so glad I got mine two medium classic vintage. Also, before the price increase. Vintage so gorgeous. I got my Chanel wallet flap before increasing,Now, I can imagine even the pre-love high also. Insane. Thank you for video. ❤
I agree that the prices are now extortionate for the classic flaps, but I dont agree that the vintage ones are great either. They look really really sad and overpriced imo
It’s great Sophie that you can be open and honest about changing your mind. Honestly I was expecting you to say this about CCF last year or the year before. The pandemic era price rises and also once “new” / “trend” bags from other brands becoming a lot more established and long term has made it loose it luster IMO because there is so many “classic” options now. Btw a fun idea sometime is pick out a video from your early YT days, the cringiest one you can find and say how you’ve changed. I think that would be so cool because you’re a UA-cam staple now, it’s hard to imagine you were once shy new UA-camr. Also I love the 2010s vibes especially more mad ones. Love going down memory lane 🚘 🧠
Hello my friend! (I never say your name as I know you like to be private 😊) Ahhhh, I can think of so many cringe videos you know, I’ve been going since 2012 so I have quite a library of embarrassing content to choose from!! 🤣🤣🤣 xxx
@@SophieShohetOfficial Wow 10 years…that’s crazy. Yet your content is still so fresh and engaging as ever 💕 I’m doing good thanks for asking, currently (finally) learning to drive so it’s been an adventure 😂
When I think of buying luxury, I think of: 1. A design that is iconic/difficult to dupe 2. An item I can get my money back for in the future 3. Quality that is better than other mass market bags Examples would be - 1/ Dior Book tote in the embroidered designs (not oblique), 2/Pretty much anything Chanel or Hermès, 3/Launer, Hermes The key is that people view luxury differently. Many people I know view it as “flexing”, which is why people are still willing to pay the insane prices Chanel is charging. We should also understand that many of the young professionals who’ve looked up to the CF as a HG bag weren’t working/had money when the CF was the price you mentioned. To us, this is our reality. And many don’t like the vintage look, or even view “value” the same way. I largely agree with what you’ve said, and have seen the mini bags be insanely popular and impossible to get in Asia. It’s been a phenomenon for the past few years already.
On Fashionfile I see a lot of medium double flap bags going for $8k-$20k USD. I think there is a possibility of getting your money back but I totally agree that it’s just crazy and too much money to begin with. I personally don’t own a Chanel bag, and always wanted one, but at this point, it’s just not happening for me.
I dont know about the quality issues with Chanel because all my purchases (both thought of and impulse purchases) have been perfect to me - but the maxi flaps or any of the larger Chanel bags dont hold its value the same way a Birkin 40 doesn't hold its value either. I think the Birkin 40s are around $14k USD / MSRP but you can never sell it for over $9000 when you do decide to sell it (through rebag or fashionphile even if its brand new) because those aren't the one that people go for. Its always about the mini versions hence why the mini flaps sell so well on the preowned market and especially the mini kellys. I think another reason why Chanel bags have gone down is because the whole" resale/investment bags" have become so overhyped nowadays that the preowned market has become so saturated that its bringing down the resale value (which is the same situation with Rolex watches for resale right now; The prices are drastically plummeting on Chrono24 compared to during lockdown where people are paying twice as much as msrp). Regardless - I really do think Chanel / Hermes will always hold its value better than everything else either way when it comes to bags because you wont see this happen with like you said a Loewe or even Dior bags. I think people are forgetting that when you buy a Chanel bag (or any bag for that matter), it means you want the bag itself and not only for its resale value because if thats the case, it is very likely you would not be using the bag at all.
Chanel large classic double flap grain leather is now POA listed on their website. The px increase in Mar 23 is ridiculous. Medium double flap is now over A$15k. Thanks to your honest comments.
i was about to drop money in my first Chanel bag this month. I stopped myself because….im now wondering if there are any other bags that worth the money and craftsmanship.
I wonder why the smaller bags always hold their value better, it applies to most brands (Chanel, Dior, Hermes..). Is it because smaller bags have been more trendy in the last few years? I wonder if this will change since we are shifting to big bags whe it comes to trends?
the price right now is crazy but in 5 yrs time, when we look back and the bag is doubled we will think "it was so much more affordable in 2022". not just bags, hsing, cars, electricity bills -- everything goes up. and the price eventually becomes a norm. if u can afford it, buy it & buy it cos u ♥️ it.
My opinion of the Chanel CF is that it's looking dated. It rarely fits in with most peoples life styles, it's too bulky, as well as this, they have become more ubiquitous and a target for theft. The bubble has to burst even for Hermes, as they too are no longer exclusive. I remember when Burberry market was saturated for a while in the 90's and they had to re-think their branding because it was becoming too main stream and their reputation was tarnished.
I have just bought secondhand my first Chanel. It is a Coco Rain Chanel Flap in grey color, it needs a spa treatment but I treat is as my little project :) 1/4 price of the RRP. I simply do not agree to pay the current prices. I prefer to support the recycling of luxury goods :) And give my bag a second loving home.
I remember first time I saw someone wearing a black quilted Chanel flap in 2001 at hotel in San Francisco & I thought, that looks so classic, I should shop for one (didn’t have any idea they cost more than &1,000!). I can appreciate the look, and I looove your topics and content, but I’d rather wear a quirky bag I found in a shop that no one else has than panic about wearing so much money on my shoulder and seeing it everywhere.
Hi Sophie, love your blogs. I think it’s easier for you to say not to buy Chanel large classic bags because you already have one! I agree the quality seems to have gone down. But the medium classic flap was my holy grail and I bought it last year. SA calls you and you have to drop everything to go pick it up. Or they move on to the next person on the list. Well the first time I could not due to my son’s graduation. But the second time I was called I went and got it. Believe me it was not an easy decision to part with so much money! But I’m so happy with it. And yes that’s not the kind of bag you use every day. It’s brought out on special occasions. Since then I have bought one vintage Chanel.
It comes from the french 'vendange', meaning the grape harvest. It was a word used in the wine world. It's a common misconception it comes from 'vingt' (20 in french)
@@HamelinSong Interesting, not sure about French but I personally learned this fact in Italy from my Italian language professor in undergrad when I lived and studied abroad. Venti is 20 in Italian & makes sense as most English words have Latin prefixes but a lot do have French too I guess.
I do LOVE classic flaps and while I know ill get one eventually, its not a must-have bag for me currently because I dont think the price is worth the wear Id get out of it. I recently bought a reissue dupe on poshmark for just under $100. Im in love with it and the leather is so nice, it really resembles lambskin and I love that it has the same look and feel of a classic flap without being too showy so I can get away with wearing it as an every day bag. The only Chanel bags I have so far are the beige pearl crush rectangle and a pink woc and Im satisfied at the moment ☺️
U definitely change my views towards getting vintage bags…..I was also a bit hesitant to that idea at first, but after watching ur video, it really doesn’t make sense to throw a huge sum of money to get a new flap bag
Never found this big practical and wasn't obsessed with it (not just for utility purpose and also for aesthetic). This doesn't carry enough stuff to get around and not dressed up enough to be used for real parties/former events. I have a chanel woc and that's the version id only use. I can dress it up and down and also toss it in a big tote or a backpack when I need to bring other stuff with me
Honestly, I would not purchase from Chanel, even if I had an unlimited amount of money. It is absolutely ridiculous how much they're asking for bags....
Two things I think you need to consider when looking at second hand Chanel CF on VC or other second hand market (and therefore make sense why they are 40% less than the current retail price ) is the condition of the bag and also VAT customers have to pay on top of the price to get it shipped to UK or other countries. If I see a CF on VC that has got very obvious wear and tear, I would discount it from the price I think it’s worth compared to the new bags I can get from the boutiques. VAT in some countries like the UK is also huge if you want to get it shipped from Europe and US. Hence for a second hand (not vintage), to me it has to be more than 20% discount from retail price to purchase cause I might have to pay VAT on top of sells price
Yes, it is easy for you to say that you would not buy it now with that kind of prices for Chanel Classic but what if someone who is just starting and want to have a Chanel Classic? Many UA-camrs says they will not buy it now because they already have lots of it or at least some Classic in their collection. To me, i would say buy the one that one really loved but with that price one has to be very selective unless money is not an issue for that person. I bought my Classic small recently and of course is pain to pay so much but, in my opinion, just get 1 or 2 in the color that i loved will do. Whether that is an investment or not, one can only tell later and that is also depends on how pristine condition that the handbag is in during the sale. So my advice to those who really want a Chanel Classic is to buy what their heart desire but selectively unless money is not an issue. Thanks for sharing.
I was in Paris in the winter of 2019 and kick myself for not getting the WOC for $1800 USD (adjusted for conversion and tax back) because it is absolutely crazy now.
I agree the the classic flap bag is way overpriced now. I'm so glad I have been collecting them for years now. I have not bought one this year and I usually buy one or two every year. I'm sad about the price increases.I recently bought a YSL Lou Lou bag and I love the color but I still like Chanel better. Hermes quality is better than the recent Chanel bags.
I used to be such a Chanel super fan but now I'm honestly torn. I have a red medium classic bag in caviar leather bought in late 2014 for under 5000 euros and I have worn it to death. But I can't justify spending 8000+ on buying one in black. I'm really skeptical due to the bad customer service I received in literally all of the Chanel boutiques in Paris last month and the quality issues that constantly seen to arise. Per your recommendation I bought a large lady dior in the denim diamond cannage, which I absolutely love and I was treated amazingly by a wonderful SA in the flagship boutique in Paris. For me when I'm buying luxury I also want the experience to be memorable and to be treated with grace and kindness. I'm glad I found all that in Dior.
I love to watch your video's even though I don't buy many luxury bags as it is hard to find vegan luxury bags. Anyway, I think that the classic flap Chanel bags are flooding the market. It is such a common item now that it won't reach the retail price ever again on the preloved market.
You raise so many good points Eva! In terms of vegan bags; I did a vid on this a few years back so I know how limited the market is for vegan luxury bags. Hopefully with new (good and eco friendly) vegan leathers coming out, we’ll see a change some time xx
@@SophieShohetOfficial yes I watched that video! It inspired me to buy a lady d-lite (eventhough the little logo tag is leather, I know). I also have two Stella Mc carthney bags, and recently bought a pink Dolce and Gabanna crochet bag. I have a vegan Jimmy Choo bag and a ysl bag on my list for future purchases.
Please stop referring to "LUXURY PURCHASES" as investments. If you buy a luxury item it is because you can afford it!!! I don't think people need to justify their purchases by saying that one day you can sell it and get back the value of the item. I think using the word investment for luxury purchases is dangerous it needs to be used for education, starting a business , buying property or stocks.
I bought my large classic flap pre loved for £3500 when they were £5000 new. This was about 4 years ago. If I wanted to I could probably sell it for over £5000 now. That works out about a 10% increase in value each year and there are very few investments that can give such a high return. Pre loved or vintage is the way forward for me
Im not even tempted at the Pre-loved level prices! 5k is insane. Ill just have my one Dior Tote and my hand me downs. I wish I made more to afford a Lady Dior but maybe that ship sailed too. 😂
I think after this mini bag trend starts to slow down the trend will be bigger bags again and the Chanel 22 is the start of moving in that direction and I think it’s going to be all about the Jumbo and Maxi again..they have to keep us spending 😅
I have been buying Chanel bags for years, the quality has gone down so much while the price keep going up, I have not managed to buy one in recent years. There were a few times I was very close in getting one but I spotted flaws immediately. The flap was wonk to one side, or the calf skin felt and looked cheap. I have a Launer Judi bag in exotic (python) skin. This bag is absolutely beautifully made, I used it to go anywhere, day and evening. I have also bought 2 Strathberry bags, I went to their Butlington Arcade boutique, all hand made bags, leather quality are amazing. No worry about scratch marks, very clever design. I have been using them. Sorry to go on a bit, I also find Chanel shoes and clothes are getting worse sadly. I am sorry to say without Karl, despite Virginie is not bad, the collections are losing impacts, wow factor and creativity. It is not setting the trend like it used to be. When Karl did a collection, other brands just copy. There is nothing for others to follow. The craftsmanship still there but the design is lacking. If you look at other just bought their clothes from Chanel, jacket, shoes, they look ridiculous (not the ladies fault). They deserve better but I guess they are happy to wear the clothes with large printed logos on. For that sort of money, others should spot that is Chanel or something very special and asked where you bought that from on the street. Not secretly laughed at your taste. I still like all the Chanel bags I bought, I won’t sell them. The bags were all lined in leather including small single flap. Hardware are just the same after years of use! Never have entangled chain like those are selling in boutiques. Sorry for the long rant.
DeMellier has great quality (I have two SLGs from them), and Strathberry is great, too (I have some bags and SLGs from the brand). Polène - I'm waiting and waiting for them to finally accept PayPal (I don't have a credit card), because I would LOVE to buy a bag from them! Great price point, and the quality seems very good 😊!
I am so happy and in love with my classic flap I purchased in 2020. It is and will be always be the IT bag for me. I guess the beauty is in the eyes of beholder. I don’t like any other brands or bags with one exception is Hermès and of course, the BK. Thank you for sharing your video!
I think Chanel is afraid of becoming a victim of its own success ( too many people want to own Chanel and Chanel does not want to become a "mass market" brand. Hence, the price increase. Better to sell less at huge prices than to sell a lot at smaller prices, cause they get to keep their brand value.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions. Most definitely I feel that the price increases do not reflect the quality and attention to detail that such higher costs should merit. As you said, just looking at the vintage pieces alone are physical proof of that. A high level of Quality with the materials, craftsmanship and details of any handbag, whether high-status brand one or not, is how I define 'luxury', and more and more in recent years I have seen retailers in many segments, not just handbags, lower the notch just a little. I personally do not justify making a luxury purchase based on its resale value, because in reality at the end of the day a product is worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. I justify to myself a luxury purchase not only on the quality bur also on how much joy it gives me. Practicality and use of course come into play, but I will never purchase a luxury handbag because it is the 'it' bag of the moment, or because it is a status symbol, but rather on how much I enjoy its shape, the way it feels in my hand, the way it performs, its quality and all the other details that make it special to me. If the last few years have taught me anything it's that I need far less than what I already have, so any new purchase of a handbag will be considered carefully.
Hi Sophie I bought my jumbo on your recommendation in 2018 paid €4999 so I know if I sell it I’ll make a profit. The day I bought it I could’ve had medium but thought I was getting better “value” with the jumbo but now regret not getting the medium because of the weight of the jumbo , I hardly ever reach for it. 😞
Hey Eileen! It’s such a good bag, I’m like you - bought mine back in the day when the prices were steep but not like today’s prices! 💸 You and I definitely bought at the right time! 😅xx
For me to buy a Chanel classic flap now it would need to be a very special colour medium in caviar leather. I would still pay retail if its in a colour and size that I will get a lot use out of. I personally don’t buy bags with the intention of selling it the next year. For me, if my financial situation is such that I should be worried about selling my bags to fund essentials. I shouldn’t be making that purchase in the first place. With the constant Chanel price increases its making me more and more wanting to get a non-Birkin/Constance/Kelly Hermes. I don’t want to play the Hermes games. I’ve started looking into other luxury brands as well like Asprey, they bags are stunning!
Hey friends! What do you think about this topic?! For me, Chanel classic flap is the BEST iconic bag to own (second perhaps to Hermes!)…but, not for their new prices. What do you think?xx
Hi Sophie, I'm still over in England....that's my excuse for my tardiness this week lol. Hugs xx
🎬🎥📽Hello sophie l love love love your shelves with all your bags on looks very cute .The bags you have are beautiful if l was you hold on to your bags you will have an amazing retirement in many many many years to come you will be ,laughingly .l do love how you do use your bags and you work hard and thay make you happy but thay are only a tiny part of your life and we all love listening to you talk about your bags and seeing them thay are stunning 💖😊💖 l love the car videos you really are a cool chick xxxx
isn't hyperinflation double in 3 years ?
Hi Sophie, there is a fake account impersonating as you again on the replies
Very well said!
Pre loved is brilliant! And your not breaking the bank!
@@katem6562
Breaking. (and I agree)
Best words 😍
From a struggling, and sometimes envious student, thank you for saying it doesn’t change your life 🙏
I really appreciated this video as it was super honest and I hope it resonates worldwide.
It’s no brain. Not brains. We all have one. Not two. You’re welcome! 😂
Although there is no denying that Hermes quality are most of the time (not always 😉) amazing quality, Hermes bags are not fully handmade. I respect your comment but I love Chanel and don’t feel like a sucker with no brain 🤷🏼♀️love my collection just like I love Hermes ❤
Why no commentary on Balmain bags?
They look good to me.
It’s so hard for me to plan and budget on luxury items because I know there’s constant price increases.
So true Christine, just when you think you’re near to the goal target, there’s a price rise it feels like! Hugs xx
I guess that’s the point…
You just have to bite the bullet
I said the same thing! It’s upsetting for sure.
Then dont buy them. Why would anyone want to give those thieves even more money?
I bought a jumbo 90's Chanel flap back in 2009 and I thought I paid a lot back then ($1,600). To see the new prices, I gasped!
I just bought a vintage Chanel Diana and I love how it still looks beautiful 20+ years later. The new bags just don’t compare.
Exactly. You should get what you want and focus on that thing.
I completely agree with you @luxuryLover. I love my CFs ❤
Hi Sophie 🥰 love your videos
I’ve come to terms with never owning a Chanel bag, I’ve wanted one since I got into luxury, but I always thought they were very expensive, yet I was always hopeful that one day 🤞
But Now with the awful quality and the poor after sale care and the poor customer service plus the “exclusivity” and hard to get common pieces, it has finally turned me completely off. They are overpriced trash to me now, and I’m okay with it 😆 if the service and quality is bad, then I’m sorry that is not luxury.
Hey Edda! If you ever change your mind and want one, preloved is the way to go!! Hugs xx
You’re right. If you can save up to buy a bag that price better just get an Hermes bag.
Well said! If the service and quality is bad, it’s not luxury.
At night all the women would use the branded bags (chanel, lowew, dior, gucci etc…) and it feels so boring and repetitive…
Dont get me wrong, I like bags but why is so important these days the bag you are using?
I only buy preloved Chanel, but agree that the price / quality for new is really out of whack. Love your honesty and transparency on the subject!
It's shocking how the classic flap used to be my holy grail bag... and now im over it. I'm thinking of selling it, bur scared that i'll regret it 😔
✨I agree! I had several in my collection. I’d keep 1-3 that are just super special to you and let the others go.
Don’t sell it tho.. keep it
Most likely if you have been a true Chanel lover, you will regret it. I love mines 😂
Keep it
Keep it for your children or at the very least for a few more decades.
I love it how naughty the bunny bag is and you tell it to stay, as if any bunny ever listens to their owner 😂
Agree with you
Chanel raised their prices too much despite drop I quality. Classic flaps are everywhere on the preloved market and the older bags are better quality. Surely we prefer to pay less for better quality 😁
I’ve never been very keen on how Chanel bags look(just personal preference) and boy am I glad! So much money!
Omg I bought it last week preowned 😂 I know it’s a good investment so I will hold on to it for now
I’ve been thinking the same thing for some time.
Brilliant points! 👍xx😘😘
I agree but then they HAVE to increase their quality as well
I dont really agree.
Well said
I have a medium classic flap in black caviar leather & while I love it, it is really true that it doesn't hold that much which really surprised me.
Phew! I’m relieved you think the smaller bags are worth it still. I’m so proud of my small vintage Chanel ❤
Hey Sophie!!! Those small Chanel bags are where it’s at imo. Well priced and you can actually fit a fair amount. 😊 Hugs xx
I scored a vintage chanel boy bag for $1400 CAD at thrift store, my dream bag🤗
but I did purchase the Burberry Lola in a amazing blue color, resale value… I don’t care because I love everything about it: my favorite color light blue, quilting, chain, so soft lambskin.
Is it real or fake? Ops… 😆
They have out priced the re-sell market and that is not good for new sales. People will just buy pre -owned because the market is flooded with them.
Pre owned has some great buys right now! Hugs to you my friend!xx
I don’t love many items from Hermes so the bag might cost about the same as Chanel jumbo, but
Only after I buy a ton of items I don’t really care to own…
love how you broke down your change of mind, really doing your name justice yet again with your sophisticated articulation xx
I absolutely agree with you, i'm just now starting my luxury journey and am nowhere near the position of buying a chanel just now, but i've casually checked their website today and nearly went into shock when i saw the price tag. almost 9700 euros for the large classic flap which i'd love to own one day, but now it seems like i'd be paying way over 15k by the time i can afford it. such a shame. i get they're keeping the brand exclusive that way, but i feel like they're not nearly prestigious to demand prices close to hermés. just my two cents. thanks for the great content once again Sophie xx
The cost of all
Replacement and canvas cleaning at LV will be $1,300.
Thats awful. I hope you are ok.
Hello it’s the same here London. I am more worried about the bag.
Really rich people buy ownership of brands like Chanel, not their bags.
branding prestige will bite them
Absolutely not. A small Chanel classic flap is $8,200 USD while a Kelly 25 starts at $10,000 USD retail price.
Agree! This purse has gotten so pricey but the quality has decreased, it's really inspired people to go the fake route. I see these old lady bags (real or not) now and think FAKE.
seen on tourists
I’m so glad I got mine two medium classic vintage. Also, before the price increase. Vintage so gorgeous. I got my Chanel wallet flap before increasing,Now, I can imagine even the pre-love high also. Insane. Thank you for video. ❤
Dear Sophie, where can we look for original vintage Chanel in EU without fear of fake items?
I had a Chanel Maxi and a Jumbo , Sold both I’m over Chanel , no more $ for Chanel they don’t appreciate their customers at all.
I agree that the prices are now extortionate for the classic flaps, but I dont agree that the vintage ones are great either. They look really really sad and overpriced imo
Happy to see a nod to Launer bags.
(I never say your name as I know you like to be private 😊)
Ahhhh, I can think of so many cringe videos you know, I’ve been going since 2012 so I have quite a library of embarrassing content to choose from!! 🤣🤣🤣 xxx
@@SophieShohetOfficial Wow 10 years…that’s crazy. Yet your content is still so fresh and engaging as ever 💕 I’m doing good thanks for asking, currently (finally) learning to drive so it’s been an adventure 😂
When I think of buying luxury, I think of:
1. A design that is iconic/difficult to dupe
2. An item I can get my money back for in the future
3. Quality that is better than other mass market bags
Examples would be - 1/ Dior Book tote in the embroidered designs (not oblique), 2/Pretty much anything Chanel or Hermès, 3/Launer, Hermes
The key is that people view luxury differently.
Hey Sophie, thanks for your honesty. I will definitely be takining your opinion in consideration for my first purchase with the brand.
I am also thinking of getting the Launer Traviata for years now!
SEO for handbags? 👈🏼 This is how we know we should listen to you, Sophie! 😆 Happy humpday 💕 xx
8k is so goofy for a bag that is EASYLY faked.
Thank you so much. A real eye opener for me, who wants to buy my 1st chanel bag
Hi
I had an internal chuckle watching Sophie carrying her mini bags in her as the way I picture her carrying her bunnies 😂
Love your analysis and tips on what to get! Btw Vintage is 20+, comes from the root venti, which i believe is 20
It comes from the french 'vendange', meaning the grape harvest.
True and I guess this is as well applicable for any brand if your financial resources limits.
I’m over not owning a Chanel flap due to price, I did buy a woc which I’m satisfied with right now!
Totally agree with you on this. A mini or vintage is a nice option but new classic flap? Not worth it IMHO. Have a great day.
I was in Paris in the winter of 2019 and kick myself for not getting the WOC for $1800 USD (adjusted for conversion and tax back) because it is absolutely crazy now.
I think in a few years people will pay £8000 especially if you really can’t buy new from store !
I will never buy a Chanel brand new. It isn’t worth it, you’re absolutely correct. I can get a flap bag for under 3k preowned.
Stella McCartney is vegan
@@TVGIRL yes dear. I have 2 Stella bags 😊
I too have some regretted purchases and if I sold I'd sell at a loss. So, I just keep the items and try to use them from time to time.
I’m now going for the smaller, more unknown luxury brands. Demellier, Strathbury, Polene to name a few. They’re affordable, but the quality is 👌
DeMellier has great quality (I have two SLGs from them), and Strathberry is great, too (I have some bags and SLGs from the brand). Polène - I'm waiting and waiting for them to finally accept PayPal (I don't have a credit card), because I would LOVE to buy a bag from them! Great price point, and the quality seems very good 😊!
I love Strathberry! I've had one bag for 2 years now and it still looks new and it's timeless. The leather is very soft, thick and durable.
I love all 3 of those brands. Strathberry is my absolute favorite
I’m definitely going vintage
£8000 for a bag is only going to be on the arms of an old prune ,who wants to be associated with that nightmare?
I have the Chanel Diana in Lamb w/gold hardware. I ❤my vintage bag, quality is superb.
Sophie your are looking younger & younger, especially the Less makeup = BEAUTIFUL ❤
I love finding a good vintage piece!
I always look forward to your posts whenever I’m on UA-cam. But this video is on point. Why buy a $10,000 bag if you can’t put $10,000 in it? 😅
This is a very good point Luna!! lol!xx
