I'm a very proud navy vet , served active duty from 1986-1990 and in the reserves. From 1990- 1994 and again 2002-2010. And I love the underway time and those ruff seas, may God bless the U.S. Navy and America too.

The footage of the ships in action is truly mesmerizing. I could watch it for hours!
The footage here does not show the rough waves rocking the ship back&forth motions,i was on a destroyer (tin can)in 73,after graduation,from school,you haven’t rode a ride ,till you get on a tin-can,had some good times&wonderfull memories,1973-1979,go NAVY🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏
The Helmsman is much more at ease maintaining a course in oncoming seas than in following seas. At many times it is necessary to make relatively minor adjustments in order to maintain a 'steady' course. You would be able to tell if you are NOT maintaining a course if one of the Officers on the Navigation Bridge tells you (perhaps in a loud voice but not shouting) "Helmsman mind your helm". I am sure it is much easier now that there is a 'digital Helm' - Ed Weeden, Helmsman, USS RANGER, CV-61.
These new ships ride like Cadillacs. My 1st ship was the USS Marvin Shields FF1066, and I was a BT at the time. I retired after 25.5 years as an MRC. Watching videos like this brings back a lot of memories.

Did you have the enclosed control center, in the firerooms? We were unautomated...drum level/feedwater pressure only. Fuel and air, etc. was all manual. What a trip a real Sea and Anchor Detail was, as a Burnerman!
As an old DDG sailor, circa 1966, I found it fascinating to see how modern technology has affected the duties of sailors on a DDG at sea. I was a radarman (RD2), today known as an Operations Specialist, and CIC looked like a different world from what I experienced over 50 years ago, which is to be expected, given the rapid evolution of technology. It was good to see all those young men and women taking care of business in the modern Navy. Thanks for the video!
I was an OS from 99-2012 onboard 3 different DDGs. Loved every minute!
I was an RD on my first ship DLG-12 USS Dahlgren between 70 and 72, and she later became a DDG in 1975. I was an OS on my second ship USS Richmond K Turner DLG-20 between 72 and 73 when NTDS came out. She was reclassified a CG in 75 as well. When I reported on board my second ship and walked into CIC I felt like I was on a starship compared to my first ship. This video brought back some memories.
BT2 on the Ingram, DD-938. The North Sea and North Atlantic were a couple of the most awesome displays of nature's power I have ever witnessed.
Another RD/OS tin can sailor here we sailed through a typhoon for a week coming back from Vietnam in the spring of 1973. I saw the bow go completely underwater many times.

While stationed aboard a destroyer in mid to late 80’s, on a North Atlantic cruise, Ocean Safari 85, we were told the waves 48’ plus. Ripped everything off the skin of the ship. Tore all the ladders off as well. Was the most fun I ever had in the military and am retired now. 🤙

I served on USS Semmes DDG 18 1983-84, USS Cape Cod AD 43 1984-86, USS Kinkaid DD 965 1987-89, USS Whidbey Island LSD 41 1993-96, and USS Wasp LHD 1 2000-03...The Helmsman doesn't have the option to freely maneuver the ship. Only the Officer Of The Deck (OOD) and the Conning Officer can give the helmsman orders.
It's not a "whistle," it's a Bosn's pipe. USN 1967-1987.

That's right, bos'n pipe; the fog horn is actually called "ships whistle". Also, the helsman cannot make any course adjustments apart from commands given by the conning officer. Finally, the ship does not have a ground search radar - it's a surface search radar.

Late 70s in the North Sea with 39 foot swells on the USS Shreveport. The only time I ever got seasick. You know it's bad when the deck becomes a bulkhead.

Great memories! I did six years of sea duty and got bounced around in high seas a lot! Also was in a major shipboard fire and flooding! Who could ask for more! Laughs! Go Navy!

I love seeing boat vids on aviation channels.
As a US Coast Guard vet this video brought back memories. I sailed on the WA Glaicer an ice breaker and medium endurance cutters Winnebago and Pontchartrain .All smaller ships that really took a beating in rough seas.
Very cool, but when firing the weapons why not collect the brass vs dumping more junk into the ocean?

The USA has the BEST navy in the world it's the people who lead it that are the problem.
I probably would have to say the roughest ride is while I was stationed onboard U.S.S. Stein (FF-1065).
Since when does the radar track waves! Over 10yrs as a Operations Specialist and I've never even heard of that!

CVA 31, Bonnie Dick, coming out of Singapore, in 70, you will never see photos of her after hitting a typhoon, waves breaking over the flight deck, tore all the forward cat walks off all the way to mid ships, destroying the ships capability to ever fight again. WAS HER DOOM. NO PUBLIC PHOTOS OR FILMS, CAPT. SOULD HAVE BEEN RELIEVED. OLD NAVY, CYOA.

The main gun on the Arleigh Burke DDGs is NOT a 120 mm gun. It is a 5-inch gun or 127 mm gun. You should check your facts before posting!

USS Henry B. Wilson 1974-1976. Essential Westpack Guided missle destroyer. Presidential Unit Citation. Rescuer of the USS Mayaguez cargo ship. We kicked their ass, but they kicked ours too.
My late dad Capt. DeWitt C. Redgrave 3rd. was skipper of the Wilson in the early sixties out of San Diego. Later in 69, her sister ship the Cochrane was his flagship as Comdesron 25 out of Pearl. Thanks for serving.

I think following the U.S Navy's strategy of using Drag Queens to help with recruitment would be the best course of action. It will serve to swell the ranks, and improve esprit de corps. More so the U.S Navy has reached its goal of becoming the fattest branch in the Military, surpassing even the Air Force. They have set the standard to follow. Navy Leads the Way.
This is why the other armies and navies are laughing at us.

In this video it looked close that the top of the bow was so close to going below the water. Does this ever happen in really rough seas and I assume it can be a danger and shoot down ward?
Yes the Bow goes under water. I rode out a Typhoon off of Okinawa once. We went into the Typhoon for 3 Days. That's the only way to ride it out. It was a Small Destroyer. We were Sailors once & Young. 💪
