I did 2 deployments on the USS constellation and worked the flight deck every day as a plane capt (brownshirt) for our squadron. One the most intense, exhilarating, dangerous and best jobs I ever had. #1 rule on the flight deck. "Keep your head on a swivel"
I made my first deployment on the connie! joined VF-142 in early January 1970, flying the phantom.
While in the Marines, I was briefly attached to VMFA-451 doe the duration of the squadron deployment ( many Marine units deploy on carriers and all Marine fighter/attack aircraft pilots are carrier qualified.) I have to say that during that time, my understanding and appreciation for everything to do with the blue water navy was hugely boosted. Carrier ops are nothing short of amazing, and the ins and outs of how a big carrier operated at sea was a revelation. I just learned so much! As part of my time, I was involved in a side job of helping to install CCTV in the entire ship so I got to go into just about every part of the ship, including places where most of the sailors were not even allowed to go. It was a remarkable two months.
@Phillip Banes The Pentagon has thought about doing away with the Marine Corp many times, but every time they re-examine the mission, they realize that it is a unique and valuable. The Marine Expeditionary Force is completely self contained. It has its own transport aircraft (Army does not), and its own fixed wing fighter/attack air combat elements (Army does not). It has the best close air support on earth because it has its own pilots that train every day with Marine Infantry. Even the Army calls on Marine close air support. The Marine MEF can engage anywhere in the Pacific Theater in less than 72 hours because of its organic amphibious capability. This is why the DOD keeps the Marines. Except for the naval ships, which it needs, (and of course it is part of the Navy) no one can get all of the combat elements into position for battle as quickly as the Marines. If you have time to wait the Army is great, but if you need to get into action quickly, the Marines specialize in that. Ships, helicopters, transport Aircraft, fixed wing fighter and attack aircraft, amphibious IFVs, air defense, and a logistics capability that is always there ready to go. This is why the Marines exist. The Army is too slow to react at anything close to the speed that the MEF can act at.

@@FS2K4Pilot Not sure they are jealous, or just don't understand the true scope of a Marine Expeditionary Force and the speed at which they can respond. No other military origination on the planet can match that capability, and this is why the Marine Corp is allowed to exist. Could you re-org the Army to do the same? Yes, but Marines don't get paid any more than doggies do so from a cost perspective, why would you want to get rid of the Marines. That is another thing the poster doesn't get. If you need a Division in a fleet force, it doesn't cost you any more to use Marines than soldiers, so the pentagon would not save a penny by doing away with the Marines.

I was Airwing myself, and the advantage of Marines having their own air assets is that we can tailor those assets to our specific needs, without having to try and get those Billy Mitchell-minded airheads over in the Air Force to perform missions that aren’t sexy to them, like, say, Close Air Support. We don’t have to deal with their pathological hatred of the A-10, or their criminally short-sighted attempts to retire it.
This is absolutely fascinating every time. I served in the airforce as a ground equipment mechanic. Seeing hearing and FEELING a Phantom taking off with full afterburners from only 100 feet away is epic already. But this is just insane. My utmost respect and thanks to all for your service. Everyone is crouched down in order to keep their heads. Literally. Then, after launch, the one who hooked it up had to run out there and pick up the trail bar without getting blown down.
When we were in northern areas we would all run out there to get warm, even it was very short-lived.

Just a correction. The pilots wear their flightsuits during the briefing, but they go to the locker room to put on their flight gear (that stuff shown at 1:06) after the briefing. You don't want to wear the g-suit and harness during the briefing.
yea they also said that the superhornets *afterburners* (plural not singular) produce 18,000ibs of thrust, kind of misleading when its 1 engine that produces that. the super hornet of course has double that amount of thrust with its 2 engines in afterburner

I worked in the bubble on the Carl Vinson. Best job ever.
Hand Tool :- Get Metal Bar Curve One end, Slot the other with edge distance, The Slot is for a threaded screw portion 10/32...etc and hand knurled round upper ball, Circlip 1/2 or 3/8 - Drive adaptor with screw holder, no hammering, and attach Rachet Extension assembly. For easy screw removal when necessary. Length of lever moment for additional force to be considered
They make UNREPs look easy, but, that is a very tricky bit of ship handling. To match speed, and, heading, then, to maintain that distance.
Have done several unreps when I was in, some during the day and some at night. There are two that will always stay with me. One was when I was a GMG on the battleship Missouri and we deployed for the 'round the world cruise. I grabbed an M14, and the unrep kit and went to my station. This is the first unrep for the Missouri since the 1950's when she was decommed.
So we come up along the port side of the AOE when GMGC looks at me and says " The whole ship is watching to see if you make or miss this shot. Don't fuck up." I made the shot dead on first try. I never understood how any GMG could not miss the shot to set up unrep.
The other unrep was on my first ship LST 1189 and was at night. We were hooked up to the other ship and all going fine, everyone at their stations on my ship along the lifelines watching the hoses that connected the ship. This was done in case had to do an emergency break away. The space between the ships lit up. The crew of the other ship ( civilians) were more along the beam of their ship sitting around talking not paying attention to anything going on.
There we are watching the fuel hoses go up, down and hit the water as we sailed along. Then out of no where a masted fishing boat goes right between my ship and the other ship. Needless to say that heavy rubber fuel hose tore up that fishing boat. We heard yelling and screaming and reported it to the bridge and were told we did not see anything and forget it. To this day I still wonder how that boat made out.

I'm fascinated by aircraft carriers and the submarines. However, I have a lot of unanswered questions - which you never get answered in such documentation. It's not even about secret information, but rather everyday information or what you don't see or don't really know what the simple electrical/mechanical devices do for a job. 🙄🤔

I wouldn’t mind being stationed on a submarine. I would go on the USS Ling 297 (a WW2 submarine museum boat) all the time when I was growing up and loved it. Unfortunately it’s in bad shape now after it was vandalized (partially flooded) and no longer open to the public.
I wouldn't mind being in a submarine, up until the moment of combat when the hull caves in. thing is, you also don't see anything under water. would be kind of boring honestly.

What is it called?
Are all the "bubbles" retractable into the flight deck? The one at 5:55 looks like it's fixed and does not have a flat deck plate on its roof to make it flush with the deck.
The bow bubble (between cats 1&2 retracts into the middle of the deck. The waist bubble is positioned on the outside of the ship, off the flight deck itself. Therefore, it doesn't need a hatch to cover it.
Guess that little Prius is going to save us all. Wouldn't want to burn a bunch of fuel now would i.

Yes. Also, the hook is sized so that it can only catch one cable. It never even gets the chance because, like you said, it gets lifted and travels right over any other cables.

Is the "shooter" an aviator or a SWO? And is that something an officer rotates through as a duty, or is it their assigned job for an entire cruise?
You have to be a pilot. If I remember correctly, you have to be a fairly senior pilot and having duty in "The Bubble" is kind of a big deal. I don't know what the deal was with the enlisted green-shirt in the chair at 2:22. She must've been running a functional check on the panel and it was before or after flight-quarters, there's no way she'd be working the bubble.

Yes, the shooter at 3:33 has to be a pilot. I'm not exactly sure how you get into the bubble. I'm trying to remember from 25 years ago and I was a Navy nuke in the engine room, not a flightdeck guy. I think you climb through a hatch and then the entire floor is raised up into the bubble like an elevator.

You enter the bubble through a hatch from below, not from the flight deck. Older models, like the I worked in, also had a hatch in the overhead.

It sure was. Best record I had was 59 planes off the bow in 60 minutes. So close, missed 60 by a few seconds.

Seeing the finger lift the safety flap over the firing button and place the finger on the button @ 4:08 bothers me. The edit does not show how long the finger hovered over the button but IMO the flap should not be lifted until the button is intended to be immediately pressed.

they do this 24/7 i'm just glad i was never on carrier, but i was on a ship that supported the task force. at least i got to sleep. i heard they put the weapons department near the ram. id of never gotten any sleep. they say you get use to it, but i dont think i would of.
My rack was right on the other side of the bulkhead as the water brakes of the catapult. Sounds like a bomb going off. But since I worked on the cat I was rarely asleep during flight ops. We worked 18 on & 6 off, usually. On the rare occassion I was alseep I was so damn tired that I didn't hear a thing.

I hope these pictures are cut badly. Otherwise in my opinion the catapult operator had the button uncovered, with finger hovering prematurely when a launch was not yet safe.

We are so done when real war starts, all these women in the Navy will not be able to lift heavy ordinance onto these airplanes, fast enough under true combat conditions when there is no man standing there to help.

Join the Navy, qualify as a "shooter", and then you design the automated system to replace you.
To me a FOD inspection of the flight deck is a waste of Human Resources when a couple of industrial size vacuum cleaners can do a whole lot better job!

Why the Air Force? When anything hits the fan, the first thing the war planners ask is “where’s are the carriers” that’s because the Air Force would take too long to arrive on station, the navy can get there an keep up the pressure unlike the Air Force!
Sometimes Carriers are available. Many times not. If you have days or longer to prepare or get naval support in place then the Navy might be better. The Navy does not have long range bombers nor an A-10 equivalent. Your statement is an uneducated one not proven by reality.
You do realize there are planes all around the world and bases spread all over so I don't think so for a quick reaction maybe but anything long lasting hard pressured and sustained will go thru the airforce our planes are all over if the carrier there Hou got a shot but it can take days to get carrier there vs a few hours with the airforce also even if you were tasked hours away and needed refueling 90 percent of the time it the airforce who does the refueling too and you taking pressure upkeep it's called the b52 ac 130 and a10 nice try squiddy! Ps we do all that while enjoying a nice caramel machiatto while enjoying our chairs!
Each branch has their supporting roles...each are just important as the next.

U.S. Carriers did not swing the Pacific War..
Japanese were far superior but were defeated as U.S. were able to offer repeated counter strikes from land bases, with out such Japanese would not have been in constant change of munitions for their planes, U.S. had specific aircraft types with fixed weapon platforms..
Had Japanese destroyed fuel tanks at Pearl Harbour, U.S. fleet would have with drawn to American Coast..
Think about it, if the Japanese had destroyed the fuel tanks at Pearl Harbour..?
