Jonny, your channel is VERY Comprehensive. RE: Swimming - Do you breathe with your nose AT ALL? Do you breathe with your mouth ONLY or do you breathe with BOTH? Or is it just a matter of what feels comfortable?
Thank you for your comment! I really appreciate your kind words. Regarding the breathing. I prefer to breathe out through nose and breathing in through my mouth. It is a general practice among professional swimmers. The reason being, that you can breathe faster and deeper with your mouth and water inside the nose is very uncomfortable and painful.
I have problems with keeping balance after taking a breath. I think your last tip to put the head deep below the surface of the water and below my arms is the key. I will try it next time. Thank you!
Hi I tried to do pineapple drill but once I turn from back to front Im getting water in my nose how to avoid that? Also when you do freestyle breathing once your head getting into water are u fully exhaling the air ? Because I'm just learning how to swim when I'm doing breastroke or freestyle I do 4 breath than I fully exhale the air under water but I feel very exhausted and tired could you please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Hey there! For the pineapple drill, water getting in your nose can be common, especially if you're just starting out. Try to tilt your head slightly as you transition from back to front to avoid water entering your nose. It might take a bit of practice to get used to the movement. When it comes to freestyle breathing, it's important to exhale continuously while your face is in the water and inhale quickly when you turn your head to the side. You should exhale gently through your nose and mouth to avoid holding your breath underwater, which can lead to exhaustion. If you're feeling tired after only a few strokes, it could be due to not exhaling enough underwater or not getting enough air during your breaths. Practice your breathing rhythm and make sure you're taking efficient breaths. Remember, swimming is all about practice and finding what works best for your body. Keep at it and don't hesitate to adjust your technique as needed. You'll get there with time and practice!
Thank you for your kind words! It's common to get stuck with arm movements and breathing, but with patience and practice, you'll get there. Keep at it, and remember to stay relaxed in the water. You've got this!
I am 45 and trying to learn swimming. The way you are explaining each movement is really helpful for me. But when water is not transparent I hesitate to swim, any advice please. Also tried with kickboard but unable to raise my head and brathe as I sink.
I'm glad to hear that my videos are helpful for you! One tip is to gradually acclimate yourself to swimming in different conditions by starting in clear water and gradually transitioning to less transparent environments. Please use swim goggles too! It's also helpful to focus on relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and visualization, to calm any anxiety. As for using a kickboard, remember to keep your head in a neutral position, looking down at the bottom of the pool, rather than trying to lift it to breathe. Practice exhaling gently through your nose or mouth while your face is in the water, and then turn your head to the side to take a quick breath when needed. Keep up the great work, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions! 🏊♂️😊

Thank you for this video. I am a senior female who almost drowned at camp when I was 8. I had a life jacket on and just jumped in the deep end of the pool with my friends who were swimmers (I found out later because all of us kids had to have on life jackets). After being rescued it set in a fear I am still determined to beat. I am taking the beginning swimming lessons now. It's tough because the instructor has 7 other students (but most already know how to swim). The instructor just focused on skills that were already too advanced for me. But, I am hanging in there. I did let the instructor know of my fear and I know nothing. My goal is to learn right now only one stroke that is easiest for me to also keep my face out of the water until I get more and more comfortable and can build. My instructor suggested breast stroke. What are your thoughts. I am just know getting to where I can back float, and try to relax and not panic. Any suggestions are appreciated. I am a subscriber to your channel now too!
I'm glad to hear that you're working to overcome your fear of water and learning how to swim. It's a brave step, and I commend your determination. Breaststroke is often recommended for beginners because it allows you to keep your face out of the water for most of the stroke, making it less intimidating. But, you have to learn floating on your back before other strokes as backfloat is the best survival technique in the water. I will link few videos at the end. Remember, it's essential to conquer your fear step by step. Taking your time, staying relaxed, and being persistent will help you build confidence in the water. Continue communicating with your instructor about your fear and any specific needs you have. Hi, I am now learning to kick with the paddle board to eventually build up to take breaths with paddle board. Do you have any advice on how to improve with paddle board. Should I keep my head above water with paddle board or place my head under the water until I am strong enough to kick with the paddle board?
Hello! When using a paddle board to practice kicking, it's generally recommended to keep your head above water rather than placing it under the water. This allows you to focus on building strength in your legs and improving your kicking technique without the added complexity of breathing. As you become more comfortable and confident with the paddle board and kicking, you can gradually progress to incorporating breaths into your practice. Remember to take it at your own pace and listen to your body. Consistent practice and gradual progression will help you improve your kicking with the paddle board. Keep up the dedication and enjoy the process of learning and growing as a swimmer! 🏊♂️😊
So wonderful videos, I really know how to swim better with your kind guidance of all your channels. Thank you so much for such a positive response! You can check out our latest video ua-cam.com/video/Gq2asyrI0MI/v-deo.html. It has some explanation about side breathing that also applies for rotations. We will make a specific video regarding rotations soon so stay tuned. 😀 - Niraj (CDO)
Very useful video. I am following your videos to learn swimming. I also have a colleague who is helping me. She told me to move form my hips for the kicking. I have a question though, when I am kicking on Back swimming with my hands above my head, instead of going back, I am rotating with navel as my point of center. She could not explain why is that happening. She and I guess, I am making a mistake with the kicks. Could you please tell me, where I am going wrong an dhow can I correct it. Thank you
I'm glad you find my videos useful! Regarding the rotation issue during backstroke, it's possible that your kicking technique is causing the imbalance. Remember to focus on kicking from your hips and keeping your legs relatively straight with a slight bend in your knees. Also, ensure that your kicks are symmetrical, meaning both legs should be kicking with similar intensity and timing. You can also send your swimming video to jonny@rocketswimming.com so we can check your technique.
i’ve recently started swim lessons (this past monday was only my second) and my instructor told us when we were practicing kicking while holding the wall face down to keep our chins down to our chest, is that fine? i then practiced kicking w my hands out onto a kickboard while exhaling through my nose with my chin down to my chest. but even though i’m doing that when kicking my legs it still feels like my legs are sinking even though i’m trying my hardest to kick big and hard. because when i started kicking it was too gentle so i started to make bigger kicks but they still start to sink after a few secs and then i start to panic bc i have anxiety lol
also, when kicking with my arms out and hands on the kickboard and exhaling out through my nose to make bubbles, sometimes when i’m starting to run out of breath after exhaling all the air out i freak out a little and my body will naturally inhale when my face isn’t out of the water yet so i end up getting water up my nose, which makes the next drills harder because i have that uncomfy feeling in my sinuses and back of my throat. do u have tips 🙏
ALSO, (sorry for such long comments lol) i tried kicking and floating on my back while basically hugging the kickboard to my chest, but i keep losing balance and next thing ik one side of my body sinks and i panic once again! it’s so embarrassing lol how do i keep my balance while doing that ? 😭
Your instructor's advice to keep your chin down to your chest during kicking is common for beginners as it helps maintain a streamlined body position. However, it's essential to find the right balance between keeping your chin down and maintaining a relaxed neck and head position to breathe comfortably. When kicking with a kickboard and exhaling through your nose, try to keep your body as horizontal as possible, with your hips and legs staying close to the surface. Practice using strong and consistent kicks to propel yourself forward. If you feel your legs sinking, focus on engaging your core muscles to stabilize your body and improve buoyancy. It's completely normal to feel a bit anxious during the learning process. Take your time, practice regularly, and remember to breathe calmly and consistently. With time and practice, you'll improve your swimming skills and gain more confidence. Keep up the good work, and don't hesitate to ask your instructor for further guidance. Happy swimming! 🏊♂️😊
Absolutely! Breathing control can be a bit challenging, but with practice, you'll improve. Here are some tips to help you manage your breathing better: Stay Calm: It's common to feel a bit anxious during swimming lessons, but try to stay relaxed and composed. Anxiety can affect your breathing rhythm. Exhale Consistently: When your face is in the water, continue exhaling through your nose in a steady and controlled manner. This will help you maintain a good breathing pattern and prevent water from entering your nose. Take Quick Breaths: When you turn your head to breathe, try to take quick, efficient breaths to minimize the time your face is out of the water. Practice Breathing Separately: If you're feeling uncomfortable with breathing during specific drills, practice just the breathing aspect separately. Stand in the shallow end and practice breathing by turning your head to the side without worrying about the kicking. Use a Snorkel: If you're still struggling, you can use a snorkel during drills that focus on kicking. This will allow you to focus solely on the kick without worrying about breathing. Relax Your Throat and Sinuses: As you gain confidence, try to relax your throat and sinuses while breathing. This will help prevent water from entering your nose. Remember, it takes time and practice to get used to breathing while swimming, so don't be too hard on yourself. Keep practicing, stay positive, and soon you'll become more comfortable with breathing during your swimming sessions. Happy swimming! 🏊♂️😊
@RocketSwimming i am more comfortable with a back float than a front float so i prefer to lean slightly backward while treading so that if i panic i can extend to a back float if needed.
It's true that different instructors may have different techniques for treading water. While there isn't a single "most efficient" technique that applies to everyone, there are a few key principles to keep in mind. Maintain an upright position, use a sculling or circular motion with your hands, and keep your legs moving in a scissor-like motion. Experiment with different techniques and find what works best for you in terms of comfort and efficiency. It may take some practice to find your ideal method. Remember, consistency and practice will help you improve your treading water skills over time. Keep up the effort! 🏊♂️😊
@@RocketSwimming have been wondering when in back stroke mode I feel my shoulders stiff but it's better I am not really exhausted but I get tired kicking sometimes I can see I am not moving I am just on the same spot
A breathe means when you get your head out of the water to breathe when swimming. 2 breaths means breathe 2 times and then put your head down in the water. As you progress, breathe 1 time before going underwater. - Niraj (CDO)
I'm amazed at people that can lift there head up out of the water with a kickboard. My head goes under and I sink as soon as I try to lift my head with a kickboard making it impossible to breath. I can't move with a kickboard unless I'm wearing fins. I may have the worst case of sinking legs anyone has ever had. Trying to find a way to get my legs higher in the water.
@@RocketSwimming I don't think I'm bending my knees that much as always try to kick from the hips. My feet are a little stiff. I wish they were more floppy. Any particular exercises I could do to make them more floppy?
I suggest you to try stretching feet workout with resistance bands. Also try to stand on your toes and repeat it daily so you gain the strength the bend your feet in water.@@greensleeves350
@@RocketSwimming Thanks for the tip. This is actually what I started doing the last several weeks especially with the resistance bands and just in the last several days have I seen some results. My feet have gotten looser. Before I started doing this I could hardly move at all by just kicking but now I'm starting to move.
Start in an accessible pool, focus on upper body techniques, prioritize safety, and consider adaptive swim programs. Patience and encouragement are key. I will try to make a video regarding this. Can you please contact me on jonny@rocketswimming.com
Treading water can be a physically demanding activity because it requires a lot of energy to maintain the position. It can be more efficient to float on your back because it requires less effort to stay afloat. When floating on your back, you can conserve your energy and rest while remaining safe in the water. Treading water is still a valuable skill to have, especially as a survival technique, but it is important to recognize that it can be more tiring than floating on your back. It is always a good idea to conserve your energy while in the water and to be aware of your limits. - Niraj (CDO)
Sorry to hear about your condition! You seem to be a very brave & have determined to learn swimming. I will highly suggest you to start learning to rotate your entire body when swimming. When you swim freestyle, learn to rotate on your back to breathe and then rotate again to swim. Since the range of motion in your knees is low, you should avoid knees to chest technique to stand up in water. You should always reach the pool wall and then try to stand up slowly. It is essential to bend your knees and bring them to chest to get in vertical position but since you have osteoporosis, I'll highly advise you against doing that. Also, you should kick from your hips like a whip. Avoid bending your knees too much as it's less effective for swimming. You should also consult a good orthopedic regarding the same issue. Please keep me posted on your progress, Ok? I'm proud of you. 😊 - Niraj (CDO)
The pool I got to has dimensions of an Olympic pool, so going from wall to wall maybe difficult... Guess need to change the pool.. atleast till I learn a bit more.
Olympics size pools are very big and deep. If you can't change the pool, you should use swimming equipments like fins, buoy or floating equipments. Focus more on your arm strength. You should also consume proper diet for better muscle recovery. Eat more protein, more vegetables, more vitamins. 💪😊 - Niraj (CDO)
I always wondered why swimming and swimming coaches prioritize Free Style as if its the basic form of swimming altho for a beginner (human) the Breast Stroke is easier and the Back Stroke is probably the easiest because one can breathe all the time...and what I found out is that coaches prioritize free style for sake of speed...altho its the most compplicated of all forms...but rest assured the only people interested in swimming are pro swimmers who can work on their own technique..and those who never swam before the beginners who never felt afloat...and all these guys want is to jump in to the water not sink and move back to the edge of the wall safely...they dont care how fast they go or how cool it looks...I once took a training course because I dont have swimming friends to swim with me and its also cool to be the only person who masters everything first 😂...but the way coaches go about it is not the best...he would be lecturing the first day about side breathing when these students can't yet float snd after an hour of speaking about side breathing and kicking and all the complicated Free Style pieces of the pizzle only then they all day "oh and by the way just lay on your back with your lungs full, that can be useful"..why doesn't the coach start there I have no idea...and more often than not the students would spend their money and end up learning nothing...now why am I saying this!...its because I noticed this channel starts with the simple things first...keep up the good work...my cousin is starting to learn swimming but she doesn't speak English...so I took it on my self to translate to her from your channel...and tomorrow is her day 3...Im not sure how good shes doing so far but Im Cetain this channel can benefit her so thank you very much
Hey there! Thanks a bunch for sharing your thoughts! It's true that many coaches prioritize freestyle because it's a faster style, but you're right that beginners might find breaststroke or backstroke easier to start with. Sometimes, coaches can get caught up in the more complicated aspects of swimming and forget the basics, like floating. I'm really glad you appreciate the way we approach things on this channel! Hey Rocket , I'm unable to inhale well on side breathing n as a result I feel there is no air to exhale I end up stopping n starting again . I am breathing through my mouth and exhaling through nose but on the second time of moving my head side ways I am not able to catch up enough air to exhale again n stop. Please help how to inhale .
It sounds like you're not giving yourself enough time on your side to breathe. Take a step back and allow yourself to roll all the way to your back and catch your breath. Once you get better at that, then try half rolls where one arm remains extended for your head to lay on. Keep the recovery arm in the water down by your side until you've completed your breath. It's ok to pause the stroke while you catch your breath. - Jonny Rocket (creator)
Great question! To reduce fatigue while kicking and breathing, focus on maintaining a smooth and efficient technique. Keep your body streamlined and balanced to reduce drag and conserve energy.

Thank you!
You're welcome! Let me know how it goes for you after trying this technique, ok?

@@RocketSwimming Yes, I will 👍
Hi I tried to do pineapple drill but once I turn from back to front Im getting water in my nose how to avoid that?
@@RocketSwimming thank you so much! Your videos are great I learned more than from my instructor!

Here are some tips to help you manage your breathing better:
Stay Calm: It's common to feel a bit anxious during swimming lessons, but try to stay relaxed and composed.
Sure, practice relaxing, keep your chin up, and gently kick. Be patient, and with time, you'll find balance on your back. Keep going! 🏊♀️😊
Is it okay to lean backward while treading water rather than forward like u said in the video...
If you lean backward then try to lean back all the way into a back float. That's far better and relaxing.
@RocketSwimming i am more comfortable with a back float than a front float so i prefer to lean slightly backward while treading so that if i panic i can extend to a back float if needed.
think you i'm moroccan
You're welcome! Hello from USA.
i’ve watched a lot of treading water for beginners videos and everyone has different technique. but what is the most efficiently then? :(
It's true that different instructors may have different techniques for treading water. 🏊♂️😊

What does a breath mean? When you say you need 2 breaths vs 1 I’m not sure what that means
A breathe means when you get your head out of the water to breathe when swimming. 2 breaths means breathe 2 times and then put your head down in the water. As you progress, breathe 1 time before going underwater.

How do I prevent water from entering the nose while floating on the stomach?
Exhale through your nose and inhale with mouth.
Are you bending your knees too much? Try flappy feet and imagine that you're boiling the surface of the water with your floppy feet.
Will your watch work in water
That's why my swimming teacher has not yet taught our swimming group how to tread water looks very hard to do
Treading water can be a physically demanding activity because it requires a lot of energy to maintain the position.

I am unable to stand easily when in motion without a board. I am 60 and due to osteoporosis my range of motion in my knees is low. Any suggestions?

I always wondered why swimming and swimming coaches prioritize Free Style as if its the basic form of swimming altho for a beginner (human) the Breast Stroke is easier and the Back Stroke is probably the easiest because one can breathe all the time...and what I found out is that coaches prioritize free style for sake of speed...altho its the most compplicated of all forms...but rest assured the only people interested in swimming are pro swimmers who can work on their own technique..and those who never swam before the beginners who never felt afloat...and all these guys want is to jump in to the water not sink and move back to the edge of the wall safely...they dont care how fast they go or how cool it looks...I once took a training course because I dont have swimming friends to swim with me and its also cool to be the only person who masters everything first 😂...but the way coaches go about it is not the best...he would be lecturing the first day about side breathing when these students can't yet float snd after an hour of speaking about side breathing and kicking and all the complicated Free Style pieces of the pizzle only then they all day "oh and by the way just lay on your back with your lungs full, that can be useful"..why doesn't the coach start there I have no idea...and more often than not the students would spend their money and end up learning nothing...now why am I saying this!...its because I noticed this channel starts with the simple things first...keep up the good work...my cousin is starting to learn swimming but she doesn't speak English...so I took it on my self to translate to her from your channel...and tomorrow is her day 3...Im not sure how good shes doing so far but Im
