That voice is butter. One of the great things about Kenny Rogers is that he doesn't oversing. Pretty straightforward, often even simple. But he can somehow still hold his place in a duet with a mega-voice like Dolly Parton.
In the 80s I worked for a company that sold light fixtures, refrigerators, washes, dryers. We delivered some stuff to Kenny Rogers house in Alpharetta Ga. And Kenny was like an every day kinda guy! Cool reaction!

She is a perfect example of a cover done right. They also did a duet version of this song before Roy passed away in 1988.

What a trip man. I bought this single in high school. And also another one of his, Coward of the County. Which is a fantastic song. But this is a masterful song it's a complete allegory for life, and it's got foreshadowing and just so much double entendre and yet like you say, the way he delivers it and the backing vocals especially that deep bass and it just works so well.
And on top of everything else, he had a fried chicken restaurant chain back about 1988-90.
The GAMBLER HE BROKE EVEN .... Aka ... he died. His last encounter was giving SAGE advice.
