    Poker was a metaphor for life. Everyone is dealt a hand of cards when they're born. You can turn them into a winning hand or a losing hand. The gambler did the best that he hope for by dying in his sleep. The ace he could keep was the life advice he'd just gotten from the gambler. They were not playing cards. You don't know exactly who someone is (what hand they're holding), but a wise person can read another person and so knows how to play their "cards."

    "There'll be time enough for counting when the dealing's done." You will only know what kind of life you've lived when it's over. Until then, know what to keep in your life and know what to get rid of. Know when you can walk away from something that's wrong or bad for you and know when to run. Don't ever judge your life by the minute you're in because it will change.

  • @anonthehousemouse
    @anonthehousemouse Рік тому

    The song is more about life advice than gambling. It's about looking at the things you are offered throughout life and gauging whether it's something good (hold 'em), bad (fold 'em), really bad (know when to walk away), or horrible (know when to run). And "don't count your money when you're sitting at the table" means "don't count on easy wins" e.g. looking at the bets on the table and assuming it's already yours, as well as "don't flaunt what you've got, it makes you a target.". "Knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep" is about the people in your life. But, the line is also tied in with "every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser" which reminds you to be cautious about who you push out of your life because there may come a time where someone you've pushed away comes through in a pinch that really saves your bacon.

    The old man said that the best a person could hope for was to die in your sleep. That was just what the old gambler did, there on the train as he slept, he passed away. What the singer got from that entire lesson was whatever he could make of it in his own life.

  • @systemsoversymptomsvisionw9806
    @systemsoversymptomsvisionw9806 2 роки тому +1

    I always knew from the first time I heard this that the Gambler died in his sleep, and the ace was the wisdom/advice her had given the singer. But, I often overlooked the advice, thinking it was mostly about poker. More recently, I've thought about how knowing what goals to pursue, and what goals to put down (not follow) is SUPER important in life. Also, not "counting your money at the table" is, in my view, about not "keeping score" while you are alive, or worrying about "success" as perceived by others, NOR should one brag or act like they have it all figured out - but we should all just do the best we can, and enjoy life in the PRESENT - to enjoy the game WHILE WE PLAY IT - and only after we die should we reflect back on how we scored overall.

    Fun Fact: There is a golf course in Florida, Arnold Palmer’s Kings North, that has a hole called the Gambler, and it has Kenny’s footprints in cement on the tee box. It’s a tough one that lets you play it safe or “gamble” and go for an island fairway.

    When he says the guy broke even that's in reference to his death and also the balance of his life with the good in the bad. There's a long-standing school of thought about yin and yang and how in the life of any being you're going to have a number of good days and a number of bad days and that number is going to be somewhat balanced when you die. But it also refers to everything having a beginning, having an end. So he owed a death because he was given life and now that circle was completed. That's also breaking even. Also in the song when he says don't count your money at the table, that's about not getting caught up in the materialistic part of life because you're living, you have to pay attention to that. They take care of everything when you die so just live and be alive. Kenny Rogers is the man. But music is so relative to the listener it can become whatever you associate it with. That's why music is so universal. I can say in my mind he found $10 on the floor and that's what it meant lol why not I want that guy to still be alive

    You can't listen to Country music and take it so 100% literal. This song is a metaphor for life, not a lesson on how to play actual poker. The old gambler was dealing out life wisdom, and dies in his sleep, right there on the train.

  • @pfcampos7041

    I love you guys but you totaly missed the boat on this one! I had to switch to my computer to straighten things out for you... The gambler is giving him advice on poker AND life! The game of poker is a metaphor for life. We are all dealt a hand that can be a winning or losing hand depending on how we play our cards. We have to know when to fold them or hold them, when to walk away from a game even to run if necessary. (Basically we need to make good decisions in life.) YOu never count your money when you're sitting at the table means. We don't get cockey, we don't take life for granted or assume we know it all. We don't judge our circumstances or anybody else's because you never know until the end what the final result will be. It is only when the dealing is done (When our life is over.) that we will know the truth about it all. Whether we played the game well or not and then we can count the spoil and enjoy it. HOpe you do more Kenny!

Basically he's saying your life is what you make it of it, you control your destiny, don't get hung up on every little thing because the only time you need to recollect every detail is at the end of your life and the best way to go out is in your sleep.

    When the guy sat down he was out of aces. In other words, he was down in life and ready to give up and the gambler noticed. So the gambler taught him in life every situation is a winning hand or a losing hand depending what you do with it. No point in fretting (don't count your money when you're sitting at the table) because we are going to win and lose until we die (when the dealing is done). The gambler gave him a different way to look at his situation before he died. That was the ace he could keep.

    No, you misunderstood. He died in the end. He had faded off to sleep & somewhere in the darkness, the gambler he 'broke even, but in his final words I found an Ace that I could keep, He meant the advice, was the 'Ace' that he could keep.' Ya gotta know when to hold 'em etc.

    He’s not talking about gambling. The old man died in his sleep. Kennedy’s ace in the hole was the old man advice

    The song is about gambling as a metaphor but it's really about handling your life situations. Like don't tip your hand to people who are your adversary's, don't be counting your winnings as someone might might be taking advantage of you while your preoccupied and of course know when step back and walk away from a situation you can't win.. Life lessons!!

    This could be also taken as a metaphor for life. You have to play your cards in life right. Think the song said that Kenny got one advice from the old gambler that he could keep as a advice...aka known when to hold em and know when to fold em.

    This song uses gambling as a metaphor for the choices made in life.
    The gamblers final words reflect how our decisions will affect our life.
    And after everything die peacefully.
    Heavy shit lol
