I’ve watched this video twice now enjoyed both times. One trick I use when I have a small opening between my bolster/guard is to hold it in place tight and lay it on my anvil and hit it with a hammer. The brass is soft and will close the gap. Then take it and use sander on both sides to get back flat. 👍🏼
I think that knife is perfect as it is. The blade is still fairly thick, so the extra mass of the handle should help with Balance. 🤷♂️ I love the effect of the weather and brass alternating before the bone handle. I wouldn’t of thought of that, I figured the brass guard and a piece of leather right before the antler would’ve been fine, but you are the man, and proved me wrong.
I've been wanting to do something special for my pops on Father's day. He loves knives and the making of them, so I'm going to try and make him one. I've been watching a lot of videos but I like your channel the best. You do great work. New subscriber!
I have not attempted a knife yet. I have been just trying to control my hammering and make different tools. I enjoyed this video and since I have bought a lot of files from farm auctions. I am going to try this. I like how you adjusted the 1” grinder to get your bevels set. Great explanations of what you were doing
It’s perfect like it is don’t cut it!! Good job and that’s a great video thanks for sharing ur time with us! May God bless you and keep you safe through these bad times!!!!
Wow! That's a beautiful knife, I would leave the handle the way it is as that's part of the beauty, cutting it down would be detracting from the beauty. ❤ it!
I was taught to bring carbon steel to the peach orange, Quench then heat to a dull red and leave to air cool, The second quench will retain the hardness but won't be brittle any longer!, Lovely work by the way ;-)
I got pretty much that same sander at H F. I created a larger top to replace the tiny work area. Also tapped out for a screw to adjust the angle, with a needle gauge on the side so I know exact degree. Your videos are relaxing and informative. Thanks.
great knife, leave the handle it was there when it was originally thought out. Thanks for all the great ideas. Tang of the file, tip of the antler, perfect marriage.
Leve the alter handle lone but put finger grubs . You are a true arts, craftsman . I make jewelry silver do my own lap work so I know how much goes in to a pics.
Nice job. Cover the blade with tape before applying epoxy. Cut the antler tail, drill a hole at end, swage a brass tube through the hole and tie a leather tassle through the hole. Great personality. Greatings from Beirut- Lebanon
I love your work and the videos! It's nice to see someone use Harbor Freight tools and show that one doesn't HAVE to have the most expensive things on the market to create GOOD, USABLE knives! BTW, leave the handle long. For 2 reasons, most Mountain Man types like the handles left long and 2, if they don't like the handle's length, the buyer has the option of cutting it off and shaping it as desired. Both ways are a win! Great video!
This probably the 5th time I’ve watched this video I have already commented that I think you should leave the handle on but I’ve decided what I think you should do with that knife is sell it to me because I love it and it is beautifully made!!
I agree, I think I had seen one of his videos awhile back and for whatever reason hadn't subscribed. I am now however, and look forward to seeing what he makes next.
Wonderful! I would like to see what you would do if you shortened the antler just to see how a pro does it and how the finished butt would look. Thank You, Great Video
I really appreciate seeing the equipment you work with. Seems too many people are fixated on having the most expensive, top of the line stuff. I am new to this and have been a bit reluctant as my equipment fits my budget. I love the knife and as to the handle, looks great as is! Thank you for taking the time to show us starters how it is done.
THIS VIDEO WAS AMAZING !!! AND THE WAY YOU DID IT STEP BY STEP ! AND PLEASE DON'T CUT THE ANTLER, LEAVE IT THE WAY IT IS LONG !! I LOVED THE WHOLE VIDEO! YOU HAVE SOME AMAZING SKILL'S !!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS VIDEO ! I REALLY ENJOYED IT !!!
Beautiful knife. I'm a bit late to your channel, but I have a couple of tips for cleaning up excess epoxy: (1) when it's still fresh/wet/uncured, use ordinary household white vinegar - it will dissolve the liquid epoxy and you can just wipe it away (also good for cleaning it off your hands etc. (2) do most removal/shaping of hardened epoxy while it is still in its plasticky phase (ie after it's not liquid, but before it's glassy-hard). You can just use Exacto knives etc, rather than needing to use grinders etc which make clouds of nasty abrasive dust shards.
quite nice! My suggestion is to leave the handle as is. If used as a carver, the extra length can act as leverage, or for a two handed cut. And besides it just looks cool the way it is.
Great looking knife....leave the handle long.....and hey, I like how you work in your shop that is just cluttered enough to be comfortable.....THUMBS UP..!! Anaco, Anz.
I wish I would have seen this video years ago...awesome I might just buy another one I wore out that belt grinder LOL I have the old one still I might need to do some adjustments love your angle iron piece it is like mine an old Rusty Bed Rail....Awesome Video...
Turned out nice and I made three or four of those last year and people loved them. Drill a hole in the point and insert a lanyard hole made of brass tube. That way you have a good reason to smell that hot antler dust! Mmmmmm!
Hi very nice knife i have done many from files but never quench or normalise them just shape the knife and from full hard as the file is and temper and done with everyhing without need to normalise andthen requench and again tempering no need all this you got the file fully hard initially just shape the blade and temper it in the oven and its done to the light yellow colour thats all it is the same and saves you lots of time and energy for reaching these temperatures i think this is the all idea of using files to make knifes
I recently found your channel while looking for a video on making and osage selfbow. I've now watched all your videos and can't wait for more. I like your simplistic ways of doing things and the attention to detail. Now I've already purchased a belt sander and have a lead on some files I'm going to try my hand at a knife as well. Keep up the great videos!
The only critique I would make and it's really not that major of a deal with such a forgiving steal but if you agitate the the blade up and down in your quenching fluid it will help break up the scale that forms allowing it to quench even more quickly. That being said that is an absolutely beautiful knife that I would be proud to own myself.
Great trick turning the deck bak 12 degrees! As you can probably tell I'm brand new at this ! Lol I also noticed most of the really good builders don't use gloves when setting the bevel... I guess this is the make sure you're not getting it too hot ..?
If I may suggest , brazing the blade and brass bolster together with silver solder to improve the joint and help "hide" any slight imperfections in fit and it improves overall appearance .
Awesome knife! I have a half finished antler and file knife from last year I need to finish up. Everyone told me to cut the handle down but after looking at yours, there's no way. I'm leaving mine long. You've inspired me to finish mine! thanks for the great video and keep em coming!
You'll dull a lot of files cutting notches into hardened steel like you were. Also by applying pressure on both the push and pull stroke you're liable to break the teeth off your file. Most files work on the push
bannisterrb Thanks for the input. I am only applying pressure on the push strokes with these files, but I'll try to remember to lift up more when I'm pulling back. Thanks again and thanks for watching.
@@TheArtofCraftsmanship , why are you normalizing the steel before quenching? Normalization should be done before fabrications, but not before quenching. And after hardening, you should use only the diamond files, because it suppose to be hard as regular files. Since you are making your knives of your files. You can use them on hardened steel. :) Good job.
N Tatic Thanks for asking. Annealing is done before shaping, and normalizing is done before quenching. As you are working the profile and the initial bevels before the quench and tempering, you are heating. And cooling the blade often, during grinding. Normalizing after this process and right before the quench, removes any stresses and variations in the grain structure to make a cleaner grain for the final knife.
I'm having a hard time finding files I've used store bought steel(1095) .I still like the files,12" ,l think they are 1095,thinking about trying some Ala.demascous. I make full tang with a guard ,some with a pomel.,I make the scabbard ,saddle stich by hand. I have been making for two years.i love it.WEY,in LA.
Beautiful work with the simplest of tools the sign of a true artist ! Bravo

Great job, I like the handle left long. I have been doing this for only 3 years. I am 85 years old. I Get more good ideas from watching you than

I love how the captions when the grinder was turned on was “Applause”
Lol. I haven’t seen that. That’s great!
If you want to know where 37:40
Cut Handel to length then add a brass button or shell casing
I've been wanting to do something special for my pops on Father's day. He loves knives and the making of them, so I'm going to try and make him one. I've been watching a lot of videos but I like your channel the best. You do great work. New subscriber!
Thank you for the kind words and subscription. Good luck.
Leave it long definitely,it really sets it off ,one knife maker to another, thanks for the video ,you did a good job
Keep it..thats where the beauty stands out.. i enjoyed watching your work.. shout out from a small island SINGAPORE to you.. 🫡👍
Very beautiful work. The combination of brown leather, brass and antler looks great. Nice handcrafting too
Thank you.

I did. Stop in for one of the live streams and we will show it to you. Thanks!
It's a gorgeous knife and you are a magician. Keep the handle as it is.....its looking fab!!🌹
Thank you!
I love your video, especially that you’re using beginners tools, I learned allot from your video 👍🇺🇸🙏
My vote is leave it as is. You have such a great imagination of your art.
Very nice knife. Please leave it long….so beautifull. Greatings from Germany.
Thanks Thomas. I did.
I'd leave it just as it is. Great video and thank you for what you do to inspire us all!
Very impressive. You might be interested in the Blade Smith Competition. Good looking knife and so very sharp.
I would leave the antler the way it is, looks great.
Wow! That's a beautiful knife, I would leave the handle the way it is as that's part of the beauty, cutting it down would be detracting from the beauty. ❤ it!
Awesome job, it turned out beautiful. I think leave the handle, it gives the knife some character. Enjoyd this vid alot, thx m8!!
Thank you.

Very nice presentation on making a knife from a file.
That bolster is too nice. Love the idea of using the cymbal.
Leave as is. It's a good patch knife
great knife, leave the handle it was there when it was originally thought out. Thanks for all the great ideas. Tang of the file, tip of the antler, perfect marriage.
I am a queer communist and I was wondering if you like to be friends with me

Leave it long I’d love to see a custom she’s made for it. It’s a beautiful life.
Leave it long, looks great like it is. Nice job. It will look more authentic with the full length.
Just found you. Love that you are a creator working with tools normal people might have. Great work by the way.
I agree, I think I had seen one of his videos awhile back and for whatever reason hadn't subscribed. I am now however, and look forward to seeing what he makes next.
I think it is beautiful just like it is. I would leave it long. Great work.
I like the handle as it is. I think that is a beautiful little knife. I truly enjoy your videos Thank You .
Small tip, a Q-tip dipped in acetone works wonders for cleaning the epoxy squeeze-out and cleaning up the blade.
This guy is very Very good at what he does
Thanks for the motivation. Been saving materials for a long time. Tried a couple of things but need to get back at it.
When I saw the brass block I thought you were going to melt some and pour your bolster with a tinkers dam. Great knife, and I like the long handle.
leave it, it is the most natural way and how is supposed to look like. Great job! Cheers
Wonderful! I would like to see what you would do if you shortened the antler just to see how a pro does it and how the finished butt would look. Thank You, Great Video

Very nice, comfortable pace, clear explanations. Next time, slow down the drill press. And take off your watch and ring.

Great work my friend. Love and respect from Greece ❤️
it looks great leave the handle long thats just the right size for a hunting knife good video thanks

For clean up, I use acetone. I hadn't considered vinegar.
Why work the handle while the epoxy is still malleable?
I started out with a harbor freight belt grinder and my bevels we're nothing like yours. Great job!!!
I enjoyed watching this video of you crafting this beautiful knife and I would the handle as is.
Leave the handle length as is. Very nice knife, fantastic job!
Thank you!
Leave long looks organic. Nice knife.
Anaco, Anz.
Nicely made I like the idea of using cymbal leave it long
Great knife mate. Leave it as is. Adds to the individuality and look. I really do like this knife. Thanks for the video. take it easy.
I once saw a dyed bone handle super cool looking ....this one would look nice with red or pink dye.
Don’t cut the handle, love it as is. Beautiful knife!
Leave the handle! That's a sexy knife and handle. Nice work.
Very nice . I'm gonna get in to leaning how to do this. Again very nice work.
Thank you. Go for it.
I wish I would have seen this video years ago...awesome I might just buy another one I wore out that belt grinder LOL I have the old one still I might need to do some adjustments love your angle iron piece it is like mine an old Rusty Bed Rail....Awesome Video...
Fantastic knife and I would shorten the handle but obviously it's up to the individual .Great work.
it turned out really nice man - i think the antler as is, the way the fella wore it his whole life ya know?
Great Work.
Leave it as it is.
Tim Mizell
Thanks Tim. I appreciate input and thanks again for watching.
I think you should leave it just like it is . Looks GREAT!
Beautiful knife and excellent craftsmanship on the shelves above your workbench! 😂
Great job. If that were my project I would leave it long on the antler. That would make a great patch knife for a muzzleloading rifle.
Turned out nice and I made three or four of those last year and people loved them.
Drill a hole in the point and insert a lanyard hole made of brass tube. That way you have a good reason to smell that hot antler dust! Mmmmmm!

I thought this build was really interesting because of the tools you used. Really like the finished knife and leave the handle like it is.
Very good job & very nice knife... Greetings from Buenos Aires

Totally cool...leave it just the way you made it. Awesome.
Please Leave it as is, Brother ! Awesomeness !
Done.
What a stunning blade. Well done
Thanks
I personally like the longer handle. Beautiful 😍
I know this is an old video and my opinion dosnt matter now but i would say dont cut it, it looks awesome as is.👍
Nice work I learned allot from your video, have been doing the same with a different procedure.
Would leave that handle as long as it is for an outstanding look and balance of the knife... 👌
Very nice looking knife. Leave it long, I think it looks balanced as it comes to a point at both ends; aesthetically kind on the eyes.
A great piece of art. Please leave it long ,i love it .
This is a very beautiful knife. Great work my friend 🤙
your time invested in it . leave it how ever you like ( nice job )
Best knife making video I’ve seen.
Troy Pierce
What a compliment! Thank you so much. Thanks for watching.

Yes. I never wear gloves when grinding knives. Gotta feel the heat😁. Thanks for watching.
I know this is an older video, but I certainly hope you left the handle as is, it looks great as it is, great video!!
Thanks! I did leave it long😁.
If I may suggest , brazing the blade and brass bolster together with silver solder to improve the joint and help "hide" any slight imperfections in fit and it improves overall appearance .
Beautiful knife and great video. Keep it long.
Thanks. I did.
I put tape on my drill bit so I know exactly when to stop. Nice knife, I am a fan of the 3-4 inch blades, very useful.
Cut end off and make into bead for sheath. Great looking knife.
Awesome knife! I have a half finished antler and file knife from last year I need to finish up. Everyone told me to cut the handle down but after looking at yours, there's no way. I'm leaving mine long. You've inspired me to finish mine! thanks for the great video and keep em coming!
Dude. This was so inspiring! I am totally going to try this now. Making a forge based off your design and using a file as a starting place :)
Yes sir!
Personally love the handle. I had bought I knife years ago in West TX just like that one and lost it. Would love to have another one made!
Great work !!!!!!! Leave the handle long.
You could go directly into shaping and sharpening the knife when you make them out of files. They're all set.
I’ve done a few that way. Thanks for watching.
It's perfect...& Video was 💯% therapy

P.s I dig the handle long.
