After I saw the DQ comment from Tim C, I immediately went searching for your response! I love your pragmatic approach to situations like this. Your passion for the sport is evident, but your “get over it” admonition is spot on! I can’t wait for May! (Yes, I will watch Barber this weekend.)
I don't know if it's the same like on the old Dallaras, but back before the DW12, the P2P button was the same as the pit button, and Will Power pushed it going around the Long Beach Hairpin in 2010 and was going so slow that he tripped the Speed Limiter instead of getting extra horsepower. He probably still remembers that day quite well.
Conor I want to see you in the car more! Appreciate your input and perspective. And good to Penske as an organization for showing accountability and accepting the results.
What does it mean that you can use it when you are at the alternate start/finish? Is it: restart without push to pass. When the driver hits that point - push to get further if needed? Newbie here - so I appreciate your help.
So for qualifying at all road and street circuits there is an alternate start finish/timing line so when we finish a lap in qualifying we can pit right after instead of doing another full lap. It's basically a time saver for the sessions. At St pete, qualifying times are set right after the chicane before the final hairpin. Long beach the timing line is right before pit in. So when they go green on the restart out of the last corner in long beach, they dont have access to P2P until they get allllll the way around the lap to the ALT time line which is right before pit entry. Barber the alt time line is at the top of the hill before the final 3 corners. before pit entry.
Thats really interesting that you say drivers will push the button even when they dont have p2p. I think the most interesting detail of this is that Will Power apparently had it on restarts but didnt use it.
@@pierretremblay3130 we can use it pretty much anywhere we want as long as it’s not starts and restarts so it’s a free for all. As long as you keep track of how many seconds you have left. It’s tough to conserve if you’re in a battle. But you never want to be the one without it
Thanks for tbis. Could you please do a series about how the cars work from a driver aspect? Suspension conversation, how you use your wheel, what is in the cockpit beyond the wheel, etc. Thanks!
@@ConorDaly22 that would be awesome! We see others doing things like new aero screen which is cool but it's always outside in, if you will. I'm in IT and always wanted to get into the tech side of racing (or racing but too late for that); there's a lot that we don't see technically or mechanically. Thanks Sir!
@@ConorDaly22 I would LOVE a description/explanation on the difference between mechanical grip and aero-grip in terms of how it feels to the driver. I asked J.R. Hildebrand once and he gave a good one but I would love your perspective.
Question - NBC tracks the 'push to pass' seconds remaining to use for each driver. Shouldn't NBC have access to the data regarding the 'push to pass' button being used? Seems like they would have seen weird usage on-air. In Long Beach, Diffey & Co. were literally telling us when Newgarden/Herta/Dixon were using the button. I was listening to the newest Speed Street pod when the news broke. Conor, you got your answer when McLaren breaks through and gets a win hahaha!
that data only refreshes each lap because they didnt want teams to be able to call out to their drivers saying the person behind them was on P2P. So it only updates with how much is left after each lap I believe. But again this is something I dont think we've ever seen before with P2P so probably wouldnt have even been noticed unless you were really digging
@@ConorDaly22That makes a lot of sense. I’m sure teams would use real time data to create a competitive advantage. Now I’m wondering if other drivers hit the button in hopes it works. Sounds like Scotty Mac used that logic as his excuse. Your driver take gives it merit.
O boy this is going to be fun to watch. Piss off drivers in fast cars. With the bump and run Hertia showed off this weekend at Long Beach we could be in for some great races.
The real question is was it Indycar or a fan watching the in car that caught it originally. Thanks for coming and clarifying for those of us who don't want to go read. P.S. Very happy with the quality of the DRR Cusick Polkadot hat.
@@bluedog373actually, that's what got them caught. Indycar does give an allotment of P2P in warmup. But there was a technical glitch at Long Beach in the System at race control, so they disabled P2p for everyone in warmup, that's how they got caught. Data analysts saw that they were still able to activate p2p even though race control had it disabled
The one thing I'm still confused about is how fast Grosjean's P2P drained last year at Barber, especially when I was watching the onboard, it looked like he wasn't using that much
Thanks Conor for offering your insight and perspective. I do wonder if the driver's knew or not. I assume like you said that drivers are always looking for a competitive advantage, so them pushing the button on restarts hoping it would work is interesting. Obviously it usually or never works. But once Josef and Scott realized it did, they were like okay!! I mean, a racer is a racer. Whether it's pushing the boundaries of track limits, or jumping starts, you are always looking for an advantage.
As a previous open wheel racer, this is beyond reproach, not like a pound or two overweight or being too low this is a huge advantage. I just wonder how long this has been going on. All these drivers and teams were gods to me and I was a huge fan of scott and joseph but no more, this crossed the line.yes drivers will do whatever in the car but if they probably knew and did not put a stop to it
Thanks for the insight. It’s interesting to hear you confirm that drivers might push the button anyway even when it won’t work - I’m sceptical, but it’s definitely still possible that Scott genuinely didn’t know and just pressed it out of habit, like he said.
As much as this crazy to say....with Roger Penske owning the series and this type of thing coming through people may agree with me an may not agree with me...however to see this happen when a team owner runs the series as well...shows class from the owner of the series to not dispute it and accept it.
Penske was effectively caught cheating and blamed it on a technical problem: "Unfortunately, the push-to-pass software was not removed as it should have been, following recently completed hybrid testing in the Team Penske Indy cars," Team Penske President Tim Cindric said in a statement. "This software allowed for push-to-pass to be deployed during restarts at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix race, when it should not have been permitted. "The No. 2 car driven by Josef Newgarden and the No. 3 car driven by Scott McLaughlin, both deployed push-to-pass on a restart, which violated IndyCar rules. Team Penske accepts the penalties applied by IndyCar." source=speedsport
Hard to believe it was unintentional cause i know when I sim race with a push to pass option if it's disabled im not reaching for the button. But, also how did Indycar or other competitors not catch this during the race seeing that they have running total and you'd see it drop. I guess the good news is was handed swiftly & harshly and seems to be corrected going forward
Well as Josef said today they knew they were using it. They broke the rules no avoiding it for sure. But I still do agree with him and other drivers we have all definitely pressed the button. I hate to say it but it would be hard to compare to sim racing in this particular case
Super interesting comment that you sometimes hit that button just in case there’s a glitch and you get something. I wonder if this is the case with a lot of drivers or not? I wonder if they looked back to last year to see if this was happening, was st Pete the first race? Not really mad at them it kind of goes back to the old days of finding way to sneak extra fuel into the cars. With that said it sucks to have a race win overturned after the fact.
I think if you have a button that delivers power you'd always want to push it haha. it was rare for me but sometimes push it why not? See what happens.
Thanks for explaining this so clearly & concisely. I've followed Indycar since the mid-60s (yes, I am OLD) and didn't know the "button" had rules governing its use because I hardly ever watch anymore. Why? Because they do such a terrible job of promoting. At my age I need reminders! Maybe if I'd watched some races this year I'd know more. Or if Robin Miller hadn't gone away RIP. Last I knew, you had only so much PtoP & it was up to you to manage it. In F1 the DRS is contolled by the officials - why can't PtoP be that way? But once again, Conor - you did a great job explaining it. I first came across Kenny Wallace's comments earlier and you probably know as well as I do, that Herm is long on words but they tend to get disconnected 😆
Well I certainly hope you find the opportunity to watch more. P2P is technically controlled by the race officials, or at least we all thought it was hah. But yes they switch it “on” for us to use then we have to manage it ourselves. We only have a certain amount to use per race. Sometimes it’s 150 seconds sometimes it’s 200 seconds depending on the road or street course
@@ConorDaly22 Thanks a bunch for the explanation. I DID watch the last half-hour of Barber and I was actually excited watching a race, after many years of F1 "follow the leader". That is a spectacular track, especially from the in-car perspective.
General question. Would having the 2 and 3 cars miss out out practice seasion 1 for the following race be an effective deterrent to teams to not try to skirt the system? Obviously, big time penalties today but just a question i was wondering about. Great work!
@@ConorDaly22 Agreed- Penalties given for this incident are definitely hard to argue with and send a message. Just didn't know if missing an entire practice session in addition would be overkill or pointless. Let's take time to appreciate you're currently only one spot behind the 3 car in season points standings! Thanks again
Thanks for the explanation Conor Daly. However I still don’t agree in principle penalizing drivers the two races and one month later. It ain’t right there should be a rule in Indy car now about how long they can Penalize somebody😎
This reminds me when i was a fresh 16 1/2 yr old driver headed to school in my 1983 Chevrolet Monte Carlo doing like 75 on a country rd, County Officer flys by in the opposite direction. I panic, my friend says hit the gas, he'll never catch us! I do it like an idiot, get up to 95 before my brain works and says im an idiot. Cop catches and pulls me over. So... i noticed on my radar after i passed you your speed increased, care to explain? I was honest.. He let me go with a warning! Lol😂
Conor Daly you did a very good job explaining to a knucklehead like me that's still new to Indy car about to push the pass system but I'm still kind of confused about the rules can you explain a little bit more
I love this!! My 1st thought was- why didn’t IMSA do the same after last years Dayton24. When the winner Meyer/Shank manipulated tire pressure for advantage
i mean it just goes to show though that teams all across motor sport are always pushing the boundaries. This is not abnormal. But when they get caught, rules are enforced as they should be.
Thanx Conor, i'm a fan and want to see you in full time ride. Rules are rules no matter who you are. Good on Indycar as well. Maybe cable races can get switched to antenna broadcast so All fans can watch!
I dont want to comment on what they think because of course I dont know what was going on but you can absolutely feel when you're on OT. It is a massive boost. BUT i would also think if I can use it, everyone else could use it because we all would assume the use of it is controlled by the series.
@@ConorDaly22 thank you for responding to everyone's comments. I'm really trying to understand and process it all. I'm reading all the comments and your responses because my question was, wouldn't they know the rules and know having access to the P2P was incorrect? - which would maybe explain why Josef and Scott used it but Will didn't? For me, since I'm a Scotty fan, I'm trying to decide how I feel about... it if he knew it wasn't supposed to be available, it was available, he knew he wasn't supposed to use it, but he used it anyway, how that makes me feel going forward integrity wise. I appreciate your comments and insight regarding P2P and that sometimes pressing the button is habit in the comments that in competitive situations everyone's going to use whatever advantages they have access to. I think what I'm understanding from all of the comments is that it's disappointing and surprising, but maybe I shouldn't let it change how I feel about the integrity of my favorite driver?
At this level I would think the teams and drivers would know a rule that important.I like Joseph and Scotty but like you said, this is disappointing and they definitely cheated to get an advantage..
Roger Penske owns the league as well as Penske Racing. He could've swept this under the rug but he didn't, which looks good on his part. That shows fairness and boosts the legitimacy of IndyCar.
Exactly. So many Penske haters out there, but I've never seen him cheat in decades. Obviously, he's great at interpreting the rules to find a competitive advantage, but that's just good racing. I have no doubt that neither RP or Tim Cindric knew about this ahead of time, or it would've been removed. Im guessing it was accidental, and by the time it was discovered, it was too late.
I disagree! It took a month to penalize- Mr Burns should have spoken up himself - and at the very least, Newgarden should have been parked for a week in my opinion. im a fan but I believe it’s problematic that Penske owns the track -the series -the team-the nuclear plant in Springfield etc..
"Officer, unfortunately I just noticed at the moment you did that my right foot/lb. pressure to accelerator pedal software was not removed prior to my leaving my house in my Cayman GT4 and making that silky transition from the 405-S to the 101-N."
I am not sure they would speak to me about that but I certainly hope they continue their process towards making it to f1. It seems they’re doing everything necessary. No idea why f1 isn’t welcoming them with open arms
Thank you for the video. Is it correct to infer that all three drivers must have known about the illegal availability of P2P, but only Josef and Scott used it while WIll did not? And presumably the team decided to keep the illegal system for Long Beach?
I think all we can do is speculate. I dont think it's fair to really say anything until we know the facts. And what we know for now, as a fact, is that they used it when they werent supposed to.
Surely there must be data that shows when P2P was used. I regularly watch the live leaderboard on the Indycar app that clicks down the P2P seconds when they are used. It’s so hard to believe to me that someone wasn’t paying attention to that during the race. Or maybe the manipulation was that it didn’t show? Which would be a much more serious offense if true.
Well the data that was analyzed is why they got the penalty. Saying they SAW evidence of them using P2P on starts and restarts means they definitely looked into it. But again, this is very new. P2P data updates only every lap so people cant update their drivers live on who is using it around them. When the lap ends you see how much a driver used. Definitely a sticky situation I think there will always be more we do not know. I am only going off of the data I know we can get.
According to the IndyCar rulebook, use of overtake is not available during championship races until the car reaches the alternate start-finish line. It was determined that (Newgarden) and (McLaughlin) gained a competitive advantage by using Push to Pass on restarts while (Power) did not.” The integrity of the IndyCar Series championship is critical to everything we do,” IndyCar president Jay Frye said 🤔🤔🤔 Penske’s Will Power also was docked 10 points 🤔🤔🤔 Power huh....for nothing??
5:22 Conor please don't try to hand wave away their cheating. They knew the button shouldn't be active and they pressed it and Will didn't . So that is definitely intentional...
Does Indycar Race Control, manage the access of P2P? So what I’m wondering is during the warm up at Long Beach - did Race Control see a disrupter in the data feed or control feed of P2P specifically with those three cars - as it sounds like Penske had a software manipulation of this control? Then after they went to look at the driver camera feed to see if they used it on restarts? Although it’s tough to see now with the aeroscreen
Definitely read marshall pruett's most recent article about it. He explains how indycar tripped over the team being able to use OT in warm up at Long Beach when race control had it disabled. Indycar does indeed control when P2P becomes active. I dont think its great to look at driver in cars because teams can program different buttons to do different things each session if they wanted to.
a. It was an honest mistake. b. It was kinda greasy, motorsport journos get paid and we have a jolly good time figuring out what's what for the next decade at least. c. All of the above. All in good fun. d. You deserve more views for your stuff here; I subscribed and liked.
How about just getting rid of P2P altogether. It's a gimmick that is a bandage on the bigger problem of passing being too difficult (aero/tires/etc.). This does nothing to grow interest in the series outside of May.
For those wondering why Will Power wasn't hitting the button, it probably has to do with the 2010 Long Beach Grand Prix. On the Dallara IR08, supposedly the P2P button was the same as the Pit limiter button. When he went around the hairpin on a restart, he was going slow enough that instead of the 5-10 extra hp from the Honda V8, he got a 60 mph speed limiter and watched Dario sweep right by him for an easy win.
I wouldnt say that is exactly why in this case but yes the button confusion has happened before haha. I have hit the pit speed limiter myself instead of overtake. but happened to catch it quick
I understand what you're saying here but this is definitely a first of its kind scenario. It's hard to know what you dont know. Does that make sense? It's not an excuse but honestly even me who has been deep in this world a long time would have never thought something like this is even possible.
Hi Conor, greetings from NYC! Is there any chance the driver will realize what's in the car? Like a, “Hey, I can activate the PSP before the other cars… Cool” How do we know that it hasn't happened before? See you at 500!!
Happy. EVERYBODY from all different kinds of racing said by Indycars standards St Pete was a blow out bore and now we know why. Indycar can go back to being very competitive at this weekend's race again.
Question about P2P: on the restart @ St Pete, since it “activates” at the alternative timing and scoring line before the last turn, does it function like: if you press the button before the line, it will automatically turn on when you reach that point at the end of a restart lap?
Nope, you have to press it basically when you complete the first green flag lap. So once you cross alt start finish into the final corner at st Pete, you can use it. You could press it 10 times while it’s not activated and it won’t do anything
@@ConorDaly22 That’s what I thought, but wasn’t sure. It would be interesting to know if while it was being used during the periods when it wasn’t supposed to be active if the dash was lighting up like normal or if it was taking away from their race allotment. 🍿 100Days to Indy premier in 2 days will be 🔥
Man, first off, I do not want to be the people getting called to see the boss face to face. Roger despises this kind of publicity. Wouldn't be shocked to see heavy disciplinary action. I get it, someone overlooked this item on the cklist, (remove test settings - install proper racing logic program) I would expect that to be a spec software Conor? Is it? I've no idea. A Honda/Chevy version? But...those guys? they knew they were gaming the system. For myself, couldn't happen to a better guy :D BUT~ how long has it been used? It may not be over.
I actually did not know this type of software mixup could even happen so I am also learning as I think a lot of people are about these systems. I thought it was all controlled by the series when P2P was active or not active so, I didnt know there was a middle ground system in place as well
P2P sounds like 6th gear in on my bike. No matter how many times I try, there is no 6th gear and I've owned this bike for a decade lol. Great update Connor.
Conor, a question… you said that some drivers will push the button even when they know they don’t have P2P available. Are you talking just on starts/restarts?
I mean think if you have a button that you know gives you 50HP instantly and it’s electronic so maybe somehow someway you’re on a good qualifying lap or have a good start you might as well try and press it! If it’s there why not try. It sort of becomes habit. But I’d say it’s rare to use it when you know you don’t have access to it
@@ConorDaly22 did you mean to say it’s NOT rare to use it even though the driver knows he doesn’t have it? The second part of the reply didn’t match the first and I didn’t want to confuse what you said.
I'd be livid if i was another driver on the grid. Especially Newgarden. Someone who would probably go nuclear in the media on another driver for this. Also, Power deserves 10 points for NOT using it. Not a 10 point deduction.
I assume there are a lot of opinions drivers will keep to themselves. but things like this in motorsport do happen. You always push the limit of what is allowed because you're trying to find every bit of speed. It's part of competitive sport. When you break the rules, there is a punishment
(Thanks for the video my guy!!! I wanted to know….. ok Needed to know your opinion!) This rule is black and white and everyone knew it was the rule. They got busted… it is what it is…and to your point I LOVE the drama, it’s exciting!!! I am curious if it was also turned on during St Pete qualifying 🧐. Also I REALLY want to know if Will knew it was available…. If he did and didn’t use it bravo to him but he if he didn’t and still got a penalty and that sucks for him. Personally I don’t think he or his team knew… call me crazy…that’s fine… (My theory: Scott or Josef figured it was available during practice and told the other one… they kept it to themselves… didn’t even tell the team 😅 cuz if the team knew they wouldn’t have taken the risk OR would have covered it up better lol).
See that is where it is confusing though because the way I understood it, the teams werent even able to tamper with the P2P as it was controlled by the series when it gets switched on. You cant activate it yourself as a team. Marshall Pruett's most recent article did a great job explaining where the system could have been tampered with. It's a tough one to judge for sure. Penske accepted the penalty and that pretty much says what we need to know
@@ConorDaly22 yeah I just read the article and I feel both more informed and more confused lol... I also just read Scotty Mac's statement and I can see where it is habit to hit it even when you're not using it (like I always use my turn signal even when NO ONE is on the road with me out of habit). Did you ever hit the button even tho you knew it didn't work?
I don’t think you realize how much it helps the racing. If we didn’t have push to pass our product that we’ve become so proud of and the racing that is enjoyable to watch would be drastically reduced to something way less exciting
Realistically it’s a safety thing I believe. They wanted to let us get settled a bit at the start/restarts and then get the ability to use it as soon as we hit the alt time line at the end of the first lap
I think it depends on the driver. I think some drivers push it out of habit. I certainly have before. but most of the time we wont push it unless we know its activated. And our teams remind us on the radio when it gets activated
@@ConorDaly22 Thanks! It’s really interesting to know the details in the cockpit. It makes sense to try to get everything out of the car especially at crucial times during the race. I agree that the penalty was just considering the offense. Really enjoying your UA-cam channel!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🏁🏆
Josef is a boyscout; almost impossible to believe he would intentionally cheat. Roger doesn’t seem like a guy who’d take pride in cheating. And neither do Power or McLaughlin. Penske owns the series and the series handed down penalties that probably exceed the damage done by Josef & Scott’s use in St. Pete. That said, data analysts at Team Penske and at Ilmor had to know about this and chose not to speak up, so that’s where people need to direct their frustration.
They knew what they were doing, aka cheating. It's like in F1 in 1994 when the Benetton car had illegal traction control modes in their ECU but claimed that they were never used. Newgarden pressed that p2p for long enough, he knew it had an effect and abused it. Penske will likely throw this season for the optics because the championship will be tainted if their drivers win and they'll get lawsuits.
Conor, does this mean that Tim Cindric will look at the 2023 INDY 500 when BOTH Newgarden & Ericsson crossed the "Pit Line" trying to break the DRAFT for the Final Lap ?? Pato O'Ward SHOULD be the Actual Winner, but maybe FIRST ........Roger Penske should give Mario Andretti his 1981 INDY 500 WIN that was STOLEN in October of 1981 !! Sportsmanship has NEVER been one of The Captain's Qualities !!
crossing that line in 2023 was not a rule. so they didnt break any rules by doing that. That has been changed for this year. I dont agree with that sportsmanship opinion at all. but you're entitled to that opinion
Nice story. bro Do we ever see F1 drivers press DRs when it's not supposed to be available? Yeah I know, they wait for an audio cue, but still, they are ready for that cue or place their thumb elsewhere.
You might be right there and that is of course a good thing but still you must admit there can be a conflict of interest owning and competing in the same series Eventually it will come to a point there the rule is up for interpretation, it is not always black and white, and who will get the benefit of the doubt then? Even the smallest suspicion will raise questions and put a bad taste in the mouth. Take the finish of the 2023 indy 500 for instance. How they restarted the race in a manner that should not be done for several reasons. Would they have done it that way if Newgarden had been in the lead at that point, I don’t think so.
As a life-long Penske fan, I’m disappointed with this decision. But I also understand that they broke the rules. My guess is Josef and Scott’s chances of winning the championship are pretty much over already.
completely disagree here. I think it is a super important part of our racing and adds a really cool element. I think this situation is wildly unique. If F1 didnt have DRS they would do even LESS passing. If we didnt have P2P you wouldnt see as much racing
I started racing flat track bike racing when I was fifteen and at the end of the night I see people pushing bikes into the infield and I asked another rider is that where they have the trophy ceremonies, and he said no those bikes are being protested.I thought what is going on.I soon found out people like to cheat! And it alyways seemed to be the people with motorhomes and people with 5 racebikes. Pushing the limits is fine, but cheating is cheating! Sorry Conor for being so long winded
Time to look into last years bogus finish at Indy. I think this goes back farther than St. Pete. Roger has always been known as a rule stretcher going all the way back to his Trans-Am days
that is honestly ridiculous I completely disagree. you're entitled to your opinion but there is no disputing last years indy 500 finish that is just crazy
@@ConorDaly22honestly, it should have finished under caution like 19 previous times there was a late caution. The one lap shootout was unfair to the leader who was Honda powered. I've watched every Indianapolis race since 1963. Last years finish looked like a complete setup for a Penske and thus a Chevrolet win. And I'm not the only one who felt this way.
@@plantfeeder6677 I think it's always important to race to the finish. BUT this was discussed in the off season with the series and I do believe we will not see a 1 lap shootout ever again. Everyone discussed that it would be irresponsible to do that. But the series, for the fans, will always try to give us as many green flag laps as possible to finish the race. Which I dont know how you can have a problem with. I think diving deep into a conspiracy about getting one manufacturer to win is a stretch but I also think Paul Tracy won the 2002 indy 500 so, there is always different opinions on results!
@@ConorDaly22I don't disagree Conner. I always hate to see any race end under caution. But with only 4 laps to go they should've just called it then or adopted the Nascar overtime rule of green-white-checkered. I'd have been okay with that. Also it would've been interesting to see what they would've done if Newgarden was the leader and Ericsson was second when the caution came out. The optics just looked bad is all I'm saying. Good luck this year and especially next month. I appreciate the interaction, Conner and Indianpolis is still The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
hmmm my rookie year I passed the most cars of anyone during the year led a lot of laps and was on the podium? seems comparable to most rookies these days and I was on the worst team at the time BUT you must be right! come say it to my face Pete, I'm happily employed to go win the indy 500 lolllllllllllllllllllllllll
Punishment should be take Jo New out of the car and make Roger drive the next race with push to pass turned ON for the entire race. THAT would boost ratings. 🎉😂🏎️

Good info from a drivers perspective!🏎️
thank you!
Thats really interesting that you say drivers will push the button even when they dont have p2p. I think the most interesting detail of this is that Will Power apparently had it on restarts but didnt use it.
That is definitely interesting I agree!

Haha sadly we are not sure what week we would get him on regarding the schedule. But it’s a nice thought
Hope springs eternal!
Pato's buddy and personal sponsor released clips going back to 2022 with odd button pushes and radio breaking up.
Never understood how the push to pass works from the TV viewer standpoint compared to F1 where we know where the DRS zones are
@@pierretremblay3130 we can use it pretty much anywhere we want as long as it’s not starts and restarts so it’s a free for all.

I can try to do some videos like that during May, yes
@@ConorDaly22 that would be awesome! We see others doing things like new aero screen which is cool but it's always outside in, if you will.

Conor, thanks for your input on this situation. See you at IMS! 🏁 🏎
see you there!
O boy this is going to be fun to watch. Piss off drivers in fast cars. With the bump and run Hertia showed off this weekend at Long Beach we could be in for some great races.
Agreed!
Thank for explaining that drivers sometimes press the button even when push-to-pass is disabled.
it's entirely possible. I've definitely done it before!
The real question is was it Indycar or a fan watching the in car that caught it originally. Thanks for coming and clarifying for those of us who don't want to go read. P.S. Very happy with the quality of the DRR Cusick Polkadot hat.
I definitely do not think it was a fan haha. this was a data analysis after the warm up in Long Beach as they said in the press release.
Sombody ratted em out. You wouldn't be using ptp in warmup.
The one thing I'm still confused about is how fast Grosjean's P2P drained last year at Barber, especially when I was watching the onboard, it looked like he wasn't using that much
you'd be surprised how quick it can be used honestly. I have been guilty of being quite greedy with it at times and my gosh it can go fast
@@ConorDaly22 It also makes me wonder how quick those numbers update on the timing and scoring on the Indycar app as well as the TV feed
This is an entirely true statement 🤷♂️
I love your videos definitely follow you bro happy you have podcast definitely miss you driving full time Indy much love brother
Thank you!
ESPN has it as an headline so this pub is a good pub.
Just had to give my thoughts on how the system works and what I’ve done during my career at times.
8:02 I was wondering if you'd get another interview segment arranged to ask Pato about winning a race several weeks later!
I doubt we’ll be able to organize it but who knows haha
As much as this crazy to say....with Roger Penske owning the series and this type of thing coming through people may agree with me an may not agree with me...however to see this happen when a team owner runs the series as well...shows class from the owner of the series to not dispute it and accept it.
Penske was effectively caught cheating and blamed it on a technical problem:
"Unfortunately, the push-to-pass software was not removed as it should have been, following recently completed hybrid testing in the Team Penske Indy cars," Team Penske President Tim Cindric said in a statement.
Great work!
I think that would be a light penalty. But this penalty fits the magnitude for sure of what was done I believe.
Lol😂
lol
Thank you Conor. Now I understand this ruling. Can’t wait to watch let Go!!!
I’m excited to see what happens!
Conor Daly you did a very good job explaining to a knucklehead like me that's still new to Indy car about to push the pass system but I'm still kind of confused about the rules can you explain a little bit more
What exactly are you looking to know?
When can and can't you use push to pass? And aren't you limited on how much you can use
Maybe cable races can get switched to antenna broadcast so All fans can watch!

do you really feel like the driver's knew in real time they had an unfair advantage? Because if they did...thats disappointing.
I do agree with this.
I have a problem that Penske owns IMS, the series, and a team.
@@alexrebmann1253 well, it was that or have no indycar at all sadly

As a Ferrari f1 fan, any plans on interviewing Andretti and what their future plans are for entering formula 1?
And I assume that Indycar knows that Penske was not using it illegally at LB, right @ConorDaly22 ?
According to the IndyCar rulebook, use of overtake is not available during championship races until the car reaches the alternate start-finish line. It was determined that (Newgarden) and (McLaughlin) gained a competitive advantage by using Push to Pass on restarts while (Power) did not.”
The integrity of the IndyCar Series championship is critical to everything we do,” IndyCar president Jay Frye said
🤔🤔🤔 Penske’s Will Power also was docked 10 points 🤔🤔🤔
Power huh....for nothing??
Well as a team they all in breach of the rule. Power was able to use P2P so he has to be included in the penalty
5:22 Conor please don't try to hand wave away their cheating. They knew the button shouldn't be active and they pressed it and Will didn't
.
So that is definitely intentional...
I am absolutely not waving away cheating… that is not the point of this video.
Those are all plausible options hah thank you
How about just getting rid of P2P altogether. It's a gimmick that is a bandage on the bigger problem of passing being too difficult (aero/tires/etc.). This does nothing to grow interest in the series outside of May.
Disagree HARD with this take. But thanks for the comment
I like that. People don’t read. We have all this tech and can’t comprehend basics.
@@ConorDaly22That's also a mistake you only make once while your "arch enemy" blows past you for an easy win... 😂
Interesting, considering Penske owns IndyCar. I guess it shows some integrity on their part.
What baffles me is that this telemetry has always been available... Detecting the violation should have been easy for the governing body
I understand what you're saying here but this is definitely a first of its kind scenario. It's hard to know what you dont know. Does that make sense? It's not an excuse but honestly even me who has been deep in this world a long time would have never thought something like this is even possible.

How do we know that it hasn't happened before?
See you at 500!!
Happy. EVERYBODY from all different kinds of racing said by Indycars standards St Pete was a blow out bore and now we know why. Indycar can go back to being very competitive at this weekend's race again.
I would love it Conor if you would do the Pato Winners interview. Thank you.
Hopefully we can have him on sometime soon!
You have to press it on to activate and press it to deactivate as well. OR it deactivates when you get below 80% throttle or something
@@ConorDaly22 That’s what I thought, but wasn’t sure.

The second part of the reply didn’t match the first and I didn’t want to confuse what you said.
now, were penske the only ones doing it or just the ones that got caught? guess we'll never know
I mean we could ask 1000 questions but everything is pretty well scrutinized to be honest. This was definitely a surprise
I wanted to know….. ok Needed to know your opinion!)
This rule is black and white and everyone knew it was the rule.
Did you ever hit the button even tho you knew it didn't work?
oh absolutely. It definitely happens to use the button out of habit. something I've done before
Maybe they shouldn’t have push to pass at all. I really never liked it anyway. I think it gives certain cars advantage Just a thought
I don’t think you realize how much it helps the racing. If we didn’t have push to pass our product that we’ve become so proud of and the racing that is enjoyable to watch would be drastically reduced to something way less exciting
Why do they disable it for the end of race restarts anyways?
Realistically it’s a safety thing I believe. They wanted to let us get settled a bit at the start/restarts and then get the ability to use it as soon as we hit the alt time line at the end of the first lap
Beard coming in pretty good! Keep it for a while.
I’ve had a beard for almost 8 years 😂😂
Conor is it truly normal to repeatedly push the ptp button at starts and restarts when it’s known not to be activated?
I think it depends on the driver. I think some drivers push it out of habit. I certainly have before. but most of the time we wont push it unless we know its activated. And our teams remind us on the radio when it gets activated
@@ConorDaly22 Thanks! It’s really interesting to know the details in the cockpit. It makes sense to try to get everything out of the car especially at crucial times during the race. I agree that the penalty was just considering the offense. Really enjoying your UA-cam channel!! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🏁🏆
I think they knew they had it if they brought it to long beach. Makes me wonder if they also were using it in qualifying.
Sadly i think we all will have questions that never get answered!
I bet a lot of other drivers were pushing PTP, But nothing was happening!
Watching the restarts back, the Penske cars blew by Herta on the restarts. Dude got HOSED by all of this.
Penske owns Indy car win reinstated! 10 second penalty Ocon
Mr driver now is a journalist, does he have a Degree in Journalism or alike
I did not have a degree of any kind 😂

Nice story. bro
Do we ever see F1 drivers press DRs when it's not supposed to be available?
Yeah I know, they wait for an audio cue, but still, they are ready for that cue or place their thumb elsewhere.
Honestly that is a great question. I am fairly sure that has been done before but I can’t be entirely positive
Pat McAfee should setup at the indy 500 like college game day, maybe an NBC ESPN conflict :(
It would be awesome if we could get him involved!
“We always right at the limit of the rules”
That is why a team owner should not own the series.
I can’t agree with you here I think Roger has essentially saved the series. Much more going on being the scenes that we are lucky to have him for
You might be right there and that is of course a good thing but still you must admit there can be a conflict of interest owning and competing in the same series
Eventually it will come to a point there the rule is up for interpretation, it is not always black and white, and who will get the benefit of the doubt then? Even the smallest suspicion will raise questions and put a bad taste in the mouth. Take the finish of the 2023 indy 500 for instance. How they restarted the race in a manner that should not be done for several reasons. Would they have done it that way if Newgarden had been in the lead at that point, I don’t think so.
Also heck yeah the rest of the season is gonna be WILD
Yes it is!
Paul Tracey still has an chance at 2002?
He won
Another Conor-ism: Crazy news! Love it and I'll use it for tense situations!
it is pretty crazy what can I say hah
Give Pato Newgarden’s push to pass allotment for the rest of the season.
Lol
As a life-long Penske fan, I’m disappointed with this decision. But I also understand that they broke the rules. My guess is Josef and Scott’s chances of winning the championship are pretty much over already.
They have a tough road ahead for sure!
Like the no co host version!
I've never liked the idea of push to pass. Too gimmicky for me. It's just another potential way to cheat as we just discovered.
completely disagree here. I think it is a super important part of our racing and adds a really cool element. I think this situation is wildly unique. If F1 didnt have DRS they would do even LESS passing. If we didnt have P2P you wouldnt see as much racing
@ConorDaly22 For the record, I don't like DRS either.
I am upset about this decision because I am biased
I started racing flat track bike racing when I was fifteen and at the end of the night I see people pushing bikes into the infield and I asked another rider is that where they have the trophy ceremonies, and he said no those bikes are being protested.I thought what is going on.I soon found out people like to cheat! And it alyways seemed to be the people with motorhomes and people with 5 racebikes. Pushing the limits is fine, but cheating is cheating! Sorry Conor for being so long winded
When people break the rules they get penalized, which happened here. I definitely understand what you're saying!
Time to interview Pato O’Ward now
Would be nice!
@@ConorDaly22 oh, right. He’s hard to reach
All the rookies getting rides and driving better than Conor ever did 🤣
hmmm my rookie year I passed the most cars of anyone during the year led a lot of laps and was on the podium? seems comparable to most rookies these days and I was on the worst team at the time BUT you must be right! come say it to my face Pete, I'm happily employed to go win the indy 500 lolllllllllllllllllllllllll
Punishment should be take Jo New out of the car and make Roger drive the next race with push to pass turned ON for the entire race. THAT would boost ratings. 🎉😂🏎️
lollllllll
I DO NOT BUY they pushed the buttons by habit. Seems like Jnew ain’t that happy with Penske lately so maybe he is out soon.
I absolutely do not agree that Josef will be out soon. The guy just won the 500 and is performing I think better than he ever has. I certainly would never want to leave penske
@@ConorDaly22 Well you would know better than for sure. I’ve just heard him say “This is not acceptable “ a couple of times regarding car performance. Thanks for the reply Conor. Have talked to you since 2017 outside of the AJ garage at Indy.
Edit: last time I saw your Dad was 1981 in Vegas standing in his underwear putting his suit on.
Whats the story behind the posters in your videos ?
posters? i am not exactly sure what you're referring to
@@ConorDaly22 there's a poster of an F1 car behind you in the room you take your videos in
