I met Pete Steele after a show back in 97' behind the Theater, a club in South Florida. Their music got me through a lot of rough times growing up, and i expressed as much to and thanked him. In response he said, "Well, Thank You for coming out and wasting your time with us tonight, we appreciate it." And he shook my hand, now I am fairly large human at 6'3" or 190.5cm. Pete was 6'9"! His fingers were literally over an inch longer than mine, and i had just witnessed him effortlessly snapping all 4 strings on his bass at once with that same hand to end the show. Man could have literally ripped my arm off if he wanted to, but instead we was as anti-rock star stereotype as you could imagine, he was just really cool, and signed my ticket stub. Seemed like a really decent guy, was really sad when he passed.
I wasn't sure about Josh, either, but it looks like his live setup had a mic. That said, it was probably used for when everyone shouts together like they do in songs like Kill All The White People and Day Tripper
Thanks Dan was looking for just his comment. I understand newer people, especially reaction channels, can miss that it's edited but it just takes the fun out of it for me.
I was a goth back in the day when this was around. Long black hair, leather coat and eyeliner, sitting in an old English graveyard on my own, drinking red wine from a pewter goblet and reading Victorian poetry. I have to say I was ambivalent about this song. Privately I enjoyed it, but it's so full of goth clichés, spookily accurate ones I must say, that it almost felt like a roast. I reflected that if that were so, it would be highly self-deprecative, so maybe I should find a similar sense of humour and enjoy it for what it is. But as a relatively new goth, an angst-ridden teenage one at that, and still in the white heat of self-imposed, utterly joyless gloom, I lacked the good humour to think of my style as trite in any way, so chose to publicly roll my eyes at it, and extend an ornately armoured middle finger to "friends" who took great pleasure in playing it whenever I broke my saturnine exile long enough to join them for a snakebite and black. But of course, back in the privacy of my gloomy bedroom, I'd light the black candles ensconced on the walls, spattering black wax on my black wallpaper, draw my black curtains closed, slip my Bloody Kisses CD into my black HiFi, and shamelessly wallow in the tongue-in-cheek, yet inky black depths of goth utopia therein. And maybe, just maybe, if I'd had a drink more than a goth should, the iconic "Black No.1" might even make me reach for the old "hairbrush microphone". But we'll keep that our little secret. It's been a long time since I listened to this, and you've made me feel like a teenager again. Can't say my personality has changed much, not much at all in fact, with the exception that I'm now proud to say I enjoy this song very much. Thanks for the memories.
Hollywood: You say he sounds like Dracula. Check out the song Suspended In Dusk from the same album. The lyrics tell the story of a vampire who hates being undead and just wants to die.
Y’all have been reacting to a bunch of my favorite bands recently, thank you!! 🤣 There’s a bunch of great Type O Negative songs out there. Here’s some songs I’m sure y’all would love: Christian Woman, Love You To Death, I Don’t Wanna Be Me, My Girlfriends Girlfriend, Too Late: Frozen, and Red Water.
This is possibly the greatest song ever. It still reminds me of every ex girlfriend I ever fell in love with. You'd think that might make me hate this song but I can't. It's too damn amazing.
SOOOOO glad you guys did the full version of the song!!! Hells yeah! What I love most about this song is that it's the quintessential Halloween song, but in reality... it's a song about hair dye, lol. Peter's girlfriend at the time was goth and used to dye her hair black. The color of the hair dye was called "Black #1". When you revisit the lyrics, it'll all come together. "Yeah you wanna go out cause it's raining and blowing. You can't go out cause your roots are showing, dye em black". So the song is about her and her necessity to keep dyeing her hair black. Peter often used humor in his songs and a lot of metaphors. One of my favorites to listen to when I'm depressed is the title song "Bloody Kisses" (A Death in the Family). It reads as if it's about his gf that commits suicide, so he decides to join her in the afterlife, however... it's actually about his cat "Venus" that died. I still like to envision it as a woman, but admittedly, it's difficult. Doesn't take away from the song though. His poetic weavings take you places your wildest imagination dares not go.
Pete was an unfuckingholy God that made strippers millions with his music. Best goth metal shit ever! There was,is or will never be anything that comes close to ever paying tribute to this. Love seeing you react to this.
I can't like this enough!!!! I LOVE that you finally reacted to Type O!!!!! :) BTW, that's the guitar player, Kenny Hickey, on the first part of the bridge to the chorus "Well you wanna go out 'cause it's rainin' and blowin..."
OH MY GOD FINALLY!!! I love Type O and I'm so glad to see someone react to them! If you want to do more Type O, I would do Christian Woman or Wolf Moon.
The drummer Sal Abruscato on bloody kisses was the drummer for the hard-core band Life Of Agony...they were big on the hard-core scene with their River Runs Red album!
Thank you for reacting to the full length long version of this song. Most would just react to the short version. That's what makes you guys so awesome.
I got the honor of seeing peter steel in all 6'8" of glory an type o .twice with my best friend ..there will never be another trickster like him ...u should watch the concert videos ..and all the vocals are his ..
Peter Steele. 6 plus feet of gristle and pillowy lips. Said he never ate chocolate, drank coffee or smoked to maintain that resonate tone. Also posed for Playgirl magazine in his prime. Died way to early. A mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a crunchy taco shell.
The reason the song is called Black Number 1, is because that was the hair color most gothic women would dye their hair. Great band, always enjoyed Peter's voice, dark, deep and mysterious, very Dracula like. He played the bass and sang, sometimes even playing a standup bass. He was a big guy too.
I'm 23 years old and I grew up with type o negative because its my dad's FAVORITE BAND. This is such an underrated band. And im glad I've gotten to hear this band
I saw Type O in Nashville at 328 Underground in 97. They put on an amazing show and sounded fantastic. Peter Steele was huge and had a bottle of wine he was drinking from. He kept cracking jokes and telling funny stories between songs. Someone threw a bottle at his head and he just dodged it and said “You missed me.” RIP Peter Steele
Thank goodness you found the unedited original. Everytime I look it up, it's the edited for time version, which means I got to try and spin the old scratched cd i got. Unfortunately the only thing that plays on it is "Machine screw", which in turn I have to go down to the basement to get the cassette I have of bloddy kisses. Life is killing me.
I saw Type O Negative on St. Patrick’s day 2000. Two things that still stand out to me are 1. Peter walks out on stage carrying a bottle of wine which he kept drinking throughout the show. When they finished their set, they start walking off the stage, Peter stops, looks at the bottle of wine and throws it over his shoulder into the crowd. And 2. before they ended their set, Peter says “on this St. Patrick’s day night, don’t drink and drive. But if you do, make sure you hit someone you hate.”
I got to see TYPE O- live on Halloween with LORDI opening for them in Asheville years ago, wow what a great show, one I was lucky enough to take my son to. We still bring it up every now and then. Epic.
Watching you guys react Type-O, Tool, NIN, etc. makes me feel like I'm discovering it all over again. You guys are awesome! If you want another spooky Type-O song, listen to Wolf Moon. Smoke, don't tell Hollywood what it's about! See if he can figure it out ;)
No matter how many times I watch this.😁 They never fail to entertain us all. TypeO Negative bring me bk a hot min. What a classic. This is the epitome of the perfect Halloween song. Peter Steele had those vocals that immediately make you think of Dracula, or another sinister being of sorts. In this song most def. RIP Peter
No, everyone in the band is not O negative blood type, and despite their Gothic label, they considered themselves metal, and rock with a 60's vibe in some songs. But yes, Peter's naturally baritone voice made him sound dark (like a vampire, sometimes) especially with the tongue rolls. Their influences were Black Sabbath, and The Beatles.. This is a great song, but they admitted to it being their least favorite, as it was their most requested also. It's an ode to Peter's ex, apparently narcissistic, girlfriend. He said she liked to look at herself in the mirror when they were f*****, lol. Aside of Playgirl, Peter was in an adult film called Dirtbags, but I don't think he um, "performed" (I'm not sure/didn't see it), but there's a blooper reel here on youtube from it.. He was also in a few bands. Fallout was hard rock/Metal. His band before Tyoe O was Carnivore, they were mostly thrash (which is typically about nuclear war, death, and Armaggeddon). The guitarist, Kenny Hickey, sings backup, but Josh and Johnny also sing backup in some some songs. Kenny and Johnny, the drummer, have a band called Silvertomb, and another called Seventh Void, which is no longer together, and they both played for a few other bands like Quiet Riot, and Danzig. Josh, the keyboardist, became an EMT for New York... ALL of their music is FIRE! And, Peter would have LOVED that you used that word to describe them. If you think this song is creepy, check out Black Sabbath From Satan's Perspective, and All Hallow's Eve! Some other greats are In Praise Of Bacchus, Wolf Moon, Who Will Save The Sane, World Coming Down (That whole album is eipc)... And, I'd love to see you React to Red Water Christmas Mourning for Xmas
I do believe this song was intended as both a tribute to as well as poking fun at the horde of their female Goth fans who adored them. They had the twisted sense of humor of both adoring and teasing their fanbase. "Black No. 1" is the darkest shade of hair dye on market if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, yes, they made a shitload of other good songs.
Peter wrote this song while sitting in his dump truck in traffic. Making fun of all the goth girls falling in love with the band. It took 6 albums before Pete left his job with NYC Parks and Rec picking up garbage. I miss him. All Hail The GreenMan!!!
The band is called Type O Negative cause some of the members were in a band called Subzero. They all got matching tattoos and then found out they couldn’t use the name for some reason, so they went with Type O Negative.
So, Type O was originally called Subzero, and the logo was a Zero with a minus sign inside of it. They all got tattoos of the logo, but then found out there was another band with that name, so they changed it to Type O Negative and kept the logo. Best decision all around. This blood's for you. ONE TWO THREE FOUR I DON'T WANNA LIVE NO MORE Also, I highly recommend Anesthesia. Or Wolf Moon. Or Creepy Green Light. OH! And, of course, Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity (I Know She's Fucking Someone Else).
Peter Steele was a pretty funny guy. I remember seeing them in '95 on Dynamo Open Air and in the middle of the show Peter said in his dark voice: "I've got to take a quick piss, I'll be right back", walked off and left the band and 130.000 people waiting for several minutes.
Absolutely, hands down, my favourite Type O song. It embodies all their elements perfectly and just killer performances by each member all around. Great fucking track. In Praise of Bacchus is way up there too.
They got their name from a radio broadcast asking for type o negative blood donations. Originally they were called subzero and got those tattoos of the logo, then found out another band had the name. Miraculously that radio ad saved them from another name search and 4 tattoo cover ups
My first intro to Type O was in 1994 on the nativity in black: tribute to black sabbath. The song, "black sabbath" by Type O, is still the scariest song of all time. Ave Satanas!!
The first time I heard of them was in 96 or 97 when I was in highschool. They opened for pantera in fresno. People were ripping out seats and breaking windows. Also throwing drugs on stage.
Hollywood: "Was Peter Steele in something else other than Type O Negative?"
Me, immediately: "Playgirl"
Same thing that popped in my head! 🤘🏼🤜🤛🤘🏼
Haha, what I said to myself also!
Yupp
HAHAHA! Same! 😂

Peter Steele’s voice could shatter continents. Type O Negative is truly missed.
Rest in paradise!!! Its awesome to see people discovering his music and enjoying it
One of the most underrated bands of all time!
he was quite a decent bass player aswell 😉
R.I.P. Peter. We miss you and still love you. Type O Negative for ever.

I saw Type O open up for Pantera waaaaay back in the day. Who knew how lucky we were to see both bands that night. R.I.P.

Guitarist Kenny Hickey does the other vocals, but it's mostly Peter Steele
Glad to see someone post the true answer instead of everyone saying there is no other singer.
Doesn't Josh also do backing vocals? Or was that only on later albums?
@@Dr_Cannibalism I've never seen Josh back up the band on a live mic, so IDK.

Thank you for picking the unedited version. This is my favorite band next to Gwar.
Yeah this one threw me for a loop, apparently I’ve only heard the other version of this song.
Thanks Dan was looking for just his comment. I understand newer people, especially reaction channels, can miss that it's edited but it just takes the fun out of it for me.
Gwar/TON fan here too!
It’s so frustrating seeing people do the short edited version, the full version is soo much better
We all love the unedited version, so many things I noticed about the edited version.
Peter Steel was in Subzero, Carnivore, and Type-O-Negative
Hey James, couple of the guys from Type-O are in A Pale Horse Named Death - if you haven't heard them you most certainly should. :)

Type O negative does an amazing cover of “Summer breeze”! A song from the early 70s.
That and "Cinnamon Girl" are actually really good.
I got married to Summertime by ToN. Hated the marriage, still love Type O.
Summer Girl is the “banned” version. So much better.

ONE TWO THREE FOUR I DON'T WANNA LIVE NO MORE
Also, I highly recommend Anesthesia. Or Wolf Moon. Or Creepy Green Light. OH! And, of course, Unsuccessfully Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity (I Know She's Fucking Someone Else).
He was in carnivore before type o negative & type o negative is a gothic womens dream music & damn peter steele mmm.
Had to rewatch this! Love this reaction guys!👍🤓❤️
So glad yall did the album version instead of the radio edit most people do. The edit does not do it justice at all.
You guys are awesome! You cheer me up everytime I watch u. Love from Romania!
Peter Steele was a pretty funny guy. I remember seeing them in '95 on Dynamo Open Air and in the middle of the show Peter said in his dark voice: "I've got to take a quick piss, I'll be right back", walked off and left the band and 130.000 people waiting for several minutes.
For Christmas, you need to do Type O's "Red Water (Christmas Mourning).
Absolutely, hands down, my favourite Type O song. It embodies all their elements perfectly and just killer performances by each member all around. Great fucking track. In Praise of Bacchus is way up there too.
I love when he says 6 feet in that song. Always makes me think about the 6 foot rule with covid lol
H6 ya dun king diamond face? Luv ya guys.
They got their name from a radio broadcast asking for type o negative blood donations. Originally they were called subzero and got those tattoos of the logo, then found out another band had the name. Miraculously that radio ad saved them from another name search and 4 tattoo cover ups
Saw them back in the 90s. The pit got so hardcore that security had to pull a couple of us out from getting trampled! It fucking rocked!
Peter took everything to the grave. You won't see or hear another, I promise! Cherish Peter!!
Background vocals were done in studio by Peter in multiple versions of the main versus. RIP: Peter Pteel
Pete is a LEGEND
Now you must do some Life of Agony. Through and Through.
My first intro to Type O was in 1994 on the nativity in black: tribute to black sabbath. The song, "black sabbath" by Type O, is still the scariest song of all time. Ave Satanas!!
Thanks for this one!
I love this song 😍💜
My faves by them are Anesthesia and Love You To Death.
TT love that you went all out for Halloween 🎃. ✌
The first time I heard of them was in 96 or 97 when I was in highschool. They opened for pantera in fresno. People were ripping out seats and breaking windows. Also throwing drugs on stage.
RIP Peter Steele and Sean Connery.
Loved this...another one is WOLF MOON
Bill Cosby's favorite Type-O Negative song: "Loving you was like loving the dead."
I dressed as Peter Steele on Halloween from the song I don't wanna be me. My favorite band. Do more!
That album is awesome. You guys need to check it out in your own time
Great band and great song. Miss them so much.
I like _In Praise of Bacchus_ 'cause of the gregorian chant at the end.
