I met Pete after a Show in 97', waited by the tour bus to get his autograph on my ticket...In the few moments i had to chat with him, i told him how his music had helped me through a lot in high school, and he said back to me " Thank you for coming out an wasting your time with us, we really appreciate it." It was nice to meet a "hero/idol" that i felt was worthy of the respect i had for them. He seemed like a good dude.
It's true that Type O Negative were more on the Punk/Thrash side on their first two albums ("Slow, Deep and Hard" and "The Origin Of The Feces") but of course their first two albums didn't do so well, especially the first album as it stirred up a whole lot of controversy while they were on a tour in Germany, as people were actually giving bomb threats to the venues where they were scheduled to play at, which made them end up cancelling most of the shows on that tour, they took note of those bomb threats as you hear them reference it later on on their second album, as it's actually a fake live album that sounds like it was recorded live, but was actually recorded in a studio. at the end of one of the songs (I can't remember which one) Peter says "Hey, I just got a call, they said there might be a bomb in this place." and about how the band got that name, Peter Steele said in an interview that the band members had already got the band's logo tattooed on their shoulders before they even came up with the name, so when Peter Steele had to think of a new name that would match the logo, (Since they had a few other names beforehand such as "New Minority", "Repulsion", and "Sub Zero" which they had to change to avoid copyright issues.) He listened to the radio one day and heard a broadcast from the American Red Cross requesting for some Type O Negative blood. and the rest is pretty much history from there. Speaking of such, I'd love to see you guys make a couple reaction videos on their first album too!
Carnivore was the hardcore band that Peter Steele had in the 80's in NYC... they released 2 albums - 'Carnivore' (1985) and 'Retaliation' (1987) ... before they split up. They were known for politically incorrect songs like - 'Jesus Hitler'... 'Male supremacy' ... 'Race war'... 'God is dead'... Peter Steele and his friend Josh Silver (keyboards) decided to form Type O Negative and make them musically closer to early Black Sabbath w/ the same politically incorrect attitude of Carnivore... They released their debut album 'Slow deep and hard' in 1991 and it was more successful than Carnivore... they released the EP 'Origin of the feces' in 1992. They broke big after the release of their 1993 album 'Bloody kisses'... it was Roadrunner Records' first gold selling album in the US by 1995 and eventually sold platinum. They felt their 1996 album 'October rust' was musically compromised because they were under pressure to release a commercially accessible album. In 1999, Type O Negative released a truly dark album 'World coming down'... after deaths in Peter Steele's family. They were more optimistic w/ this album 'Life is killing me' in 2002... which was closer to their debut album 'Slow deep and hard'. However, Peter Steele did get arrested for assaulting his ex-girlfriend's new husband and did jail time... They ended their contract w/ Roadrunner Records and signed to German label SPV records for their last album 'Dead again'... which was strangely prophetic. It seemed that Type O Negative were looking forward to the future after touring until 2009... Peter Steele was working on a new Type O album while taking a break... Kenny Hickey (guitar) and Johnny Kelly (drums) recorded and released the album 'Heaven is gone' in 2009 under the name Seventh Void. Tragically, Peter Steele passed away in 2010, reportedly from sepsis at age 48 ... The band did say that Peter Steele ate, drank and did more drugs than anyone they had known... Type O Negative opted to disband that year. Guitarist/ vocalist Kenny Hickey eventually formed Silvertomb w/ Type O drummer Johnny Kelly... as well as the project Eye Am. Keyboardist Josh Silver has remained quiet ever since Type O Negative ended. He reportedly works as a paramedic in NYC.
Second comment: Yes, you should absolutely check out more Type O in your personal time if there's not time to go into all of it on the channel. IMHO, they're the best American rock band of my generation. And you can call them whatever genre you want, but at the end of the day, they really are just a straight up rock band. It's like Pete created some kind of monster out of Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd and then beat it to death with the first Sisters of Mercy record. Meanwhile, the Beatles have been crankin' it in the corner the whole time.
I cant explain it but ive always felt like all of Type O Negative music feels like OST's for a movie series that only exist in ones mind. Cause of the shifting tone from Dramatic to comedy to horror to the macabre, all while keeping the similar thread through out the band discography.
So when making his new band after Carnivore, "Repulsion" it turned out the name as already taken. So they changed the band name to Sub Zero, and he got a tattoo of a green 0 with a minus in it. Turns out there was already a band called Sub Zero as well. So the search for another name, and one that would fit the new tattoo as well... haha. Later, Peter heard on the radio a commercial for a blood bank that was desperately seeking Type O Negative blood. And he thought surely there was not a band named Type O Negative, and it fit with the tattoo. At least that's the story Peter told!
So glad you guys reacted to more Type O Negative, they’re especially great to listen to during autumn! If you’re interested, you should check out Christian Woman or My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend by them next :)
It's Type O season once again 🖤🖤🖤 this song is so good. This album is great. I had the honor of meeting the band after their show on tour with Pantera, and Deftones. It was an incredible show. Type O tracked the stage, and then Peter was out sweeping the stage during Pantera's set it was hilarious
NY Legends. RIP Steele. Sal Abruscato (prior and original Type O drummer) was also involved with the NYC band Life Of Agony (River Runs Red album is highly recommended) Sal also formed the band A Pale Horse Named Death (recommend the song Meet the Wolf)
I dont watch music videos. I was never an Mtv guy. I cant comment on videos. But I have a lot to say about music. This song is fantastic. Cool vocals, interesting lyrics, and the guitar riff is very 80s which I absolutely love. Reminds me of something Dramarama would do like in Anything, Anything or Beat City by The Flowerpot Men. Ill never lie and be a bandwagon jumper, but I like a lot of their songs. This being my favorite. As always, enjoyed your video, gentlemen.

My blood type is O-negative. Big men we got big bones... I went to the gym, cause my momma tried to lead me to a healthier life... and she paid for it... and I was going there for fun, I was back then 6'6" and 250 pounds.. all belly, shaped like a piramid, like an A... and a few years later I didn't lose any fat... instead of turning from an A shape to a V shape, I turned into a W shape, got wider shoulders and chest. Later I when to a nutricionist to check my fat and bone density, and she told my my bones were 25% heavier than wahtever she ever mesured, and that helped me going to the gym to be goofy, and gain muscle without effort. Never took any suplements in my life... and noone believed me.
Carnivore preceded Type O Negative. Very thrashy crossover. Also the band was going to be called SubZero until they discovered the Mortal Kombat character and also a refrigerator brand was called that. Since Peter had already come up with the logo (0-) he decided to go with Type O Negative
In reference to him doing Playgirl, he didn't realize that mostly homosexual men look at Playgirl rather than straight women. Afterward, as a joke, he created the song "I Like Goils".
You obviously don't know of Peter Steele's other band Carnivore, wich had a crossover thrash sound, similar to this song. Even faster and heavier. Steele liked the hard shit.
I had the privilege of meeting Peter in 2008 in Vegas when they opened for Hatebreed. I flew in from Chicago and he asked me “Why in the hell would anyone fly out that far to see such a shitty band” I replied “Oh, I came to see Hatebreed”🤣 he then signed my photo, which I still have, threw his pick at me, which I still have, and then said “I hope your plane crashes on the way back to that shithole” all with a huge grin on his face cause that’s the kind of sense of humor he had😭💚

This wasn't in Philly by any chance was it?
its autumn... its Type 'O' Negative time!
It's funny though because I have specific songs of theirs that I play all year around. haha!

I used to get drunk with Type O Negative.
This song is about his constant yearning to get out of the music industry.
I love that Smokey is a big Type O fan. My all time favorite band. Please react to Life is Killing Me and also some Lycia.
