Nothing better than an episode of Sailing Triteia, after a day at work. Thanks, James.
I’m not a water guy not a fan of boats I’ve lived in mountain towns my whole life. Something about you and your videos is so relaxing to watching. Especially the beauty you show of the vast ocean! Really appreciate what you do!
Awesome prep video James! Perfect for all us landlubbers dreaming of following in your footsteps someday! Until next time, thanks for sharing! May fair winds be with you my friend!🌬⛵
I’ve always hated when the time comes that i have to leave from vacation but loved the thrill of getting there. I bet it is amazing doing what you’re doing because yes you’re leaving paradise but you’re leaving to go to another paradise! I really hope i can do something like this one day.
I hope one day I can find some people to join with and get a larger boat with 2 masters and it would honestly make everything easier on everyone. lower the costs like sharing with roommates except its always vacations, and the money stretches in many livable areas. I suppose a catamaran with two master hulls would be perfect.
@@smplfi9859 yeah that would be awesome. I love being alone but I’m like you I think I would like to have a couple friends with me to share the experiences and even the load some.
Love that morris shirt, oh memories thank you happy sailing
Absolutely enjoy traveling with you on your adventures😊
Provisions were surprisingly reasonable!! Good place to do laundry and take showers. Now I want to visit Fijit. Love your videos, James. Informative and entertaining. Stay safe ❤
Hell, $152 US, here in Hobart when you haul out for a scrub, you not only do it yourself (unless your not able to or dint wish to) and the cost is about $80. Keep that in mind James if you come to Tassie. Have a good/safe passage to NZ.
You look good James... Fiji waters treating you Well..!!
Very excited for the upcoming ocean passage episode ⛵
At the beginning of the video you were questioning if this video was going to be a decent watch for some people and I think after watching it and being. Sort of an old salt myself that this video can relate to Almost anyone who's on a boat at sea for more than 5 days. , critical processes well documented my man good job cheers from cape cod
I like your channel brother. raw and pure
Great information James, thank you. 😊
Best of luck for the passage to NZ James getting closer to Terra Australis.
I'm new to this channel. I really like your straightforward style! And, thanks for sharing costs. Of course, that's what everyone is wondering. Hope you have smooth sailing to NZ.
NZ makes really good manual windlasses, using an oil bath for the gears. We had one on a previous boat and it was easy to use, perhaps you are tired of hauling the anchor.
My windlass’ issue is the chain stripper not the gears. I don’t mind hauling up by hand, have been doing it for years
Treteia is beautiful in and out of the water!
Good watch, thanks
Now this is the content I’ve been waiting for!
Love kimchi ramen . I add chopped fresh Bok Choy leaves and stems and frozen shrimp or scallops . You can even add a couple of hand fulls of pork rinds to it and they will rehydrate to something like menudo , I like mine spicy so I use the chili pork rinds any type works . Safe travels !
Reality Cruising...great video, thanks, James.
Super excited for the trip‼️❕‼️ 🇫🇯➡️🇳🇿
I’m from New Zealand bro. I hope you enjoy your stay here. Nau mai, haere mai.
Greetings from Alaska, James! I just wanted to say hello and thank you for your work. You are truly inspiring and are giving me courage to pursue my blue water dreams. Fair seas and favorable winds, my friend.
I really appreciate the level of detail you go into describing the details of prepping. I will be doing that one day and we’ll look back and remember this episode.
Thanks for showing us the procedures James.
Thank you James for explaining all this to us ! You explained everything above and beyond, once again mate thanks and safe travels
What a Sunset. have a safe crossing
Noticed u like Lentils over rice, U can survive on that, taste good and cheap. Here is a recipe to make Lentils & Rice in one pot. Single serving Lentils & Rice = 1/4 cup Lentils (pre-soak 2 hours) + 1/4 cup long grain rice + seasonings (pepper, salt, cayenne, paprika) + Butter + 1 cup water, boil 5 minutes, turn stove on low for 20 minutes. By pre-soaking Lentils the Lentils & Rice take the same time to cook in the same pot.
Thanks for showing us your provisions, James. Can’t wait to see how the bread turns out! 😎💕
Your channel always leaves me wanting to see more. Been following from almost the start of your journey. Best to you James! Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us.
In the RV world we use the same type of white hoses to indicate clean water just as you used on the dock. However, people do horrendous things with those hoses and we quickly learned to carry our own hose. I could see people putting that hose down a toilet to help flush a tank….Be well and safe travels.
That hose belongs to a specific charter boat that I spoke with and there is no pump out on that dock so I know the hose is fine, I have my own hose that I use if it’s on a dock with a pump out because I have seen the same thing
Thanks
Thanks, James, very much for sharing your life. I'm casually working my way through all of your past videos and you have become a friend I look forward to visiting every day. I like your long format videos, too. Your friendly, open style is very appealing.
Great video, James. Interesting to see how you prepare for the next leg of your journey. Sounds like you're ready ... here's to a safe passage to NZ.
I appreciate the vids..I live vicariously through you right now..stay safe.
Safe travels n too Aotearoa Nz James,,, may the trade winds n currents give u sweet as passage to the land of the long white cloud dude
Nothing like a sunset over the ocean. Fair winds!
another great one thanks James! Really appreciate your modest intelligence. With that, would be awesome to see a video on your solo climbing gear and what you're looking for with your rig checks and any theories and practices you favor. Hope you're nicely tucked up for the system this weekend!
Loved the peak into the preparation. Thanks for the upload.
Another great informative video James. Fair winds and safe passage.
Good luck for the journey ahead! Looking forward to the next video!
Awesome video subject. The preparation is so often overlooked. Keep up the great work! And hello from New Hampshire, USA
Really love your posts!!!
The land of the white cloud will be absolutely brilliant to sail around. It will be spectacular but sometimes challenging. I can't wait for you to arrive safety
Now I love Mondays !!
Really awesome video. Love the prepping that you do. I only have a kayak lol
Another great UA-cam for those of us wanting to sail and those of us living through you. BTW, I watched "The Bounty" and "Mutiny on The Bounty" in preparation for your recommendation of reading "Men Against the Sea". It is a fantastic read and at times I have to remind myself it is History and not fiction! One of the greatest accounts of seamanship and leadership ever told!
Great videos im learning a lot 👍
Buongiorno James!! Ti seguo sempre mi piacciono molto le tue avventure . Un saluto dall'Italia Giovanni 😊
Totally brilliant James
Thanks for these videos..im glad everything went smooth for you in getting ready to leave..
Awesome brother
Another MIGHTY video Thanks James
Sounds like you're well prepared. Safe passage brother.
Really interesting video , thanks as always for sharing James . I'm not a sailor but I love boats . I know my limitations so stick to canal boats here in the UK, mainly Scotland . Hooked to your channel x
I will own a canal boat in the UK someday
I love watching your videos, great work, very informative and cool camera work.
One thing I would like is a detail of what papers you need. Did you need an ICC? Fair winds and happy days James
Really good video👍looking forward to your passage to NZ.
I'm 50. I got my fingers crossed that one day I could follow your footsteps 👣
I'm only 25 but I feel the same way! I'm just glad I discovered sailing early in life so I am able to plan to do this in my 30's hopefully. I want to do atleast a year or two.
Well Im weird but I really enjoyed seeing what you bought to eat , just on GP. Oh yeah you got a Really fair price on that! Im shocked that you were able to get that good of a price, considering they know youre stuck having to get it. I Loved your Morris shirt!=Great!! You are, to me, doing an excellent job of editing & matching up real time w/ videos. Thank you so much!
Yeah the exchange rate helps a lot, it was like 1 FJD to .43 USD
Thanks for sharing your adventure! Nice meeting you last night. Strange dreams lol
GREAT vid James, bon voyage, and happy sailing to NZ, I’ll be looking forward to your documenting of the trip !!!
Have a safe trip bro 😎, can’t wait to see the crossing , thanks for all that you share .
James, would love to see you in NZ!
I have been in NZ since December 👍🏻
Enjoy your videos. Great commenting, not trying to be sensational (unlike most other ones). I am planning to do this hopefully one day, and you give a great description of what it really would be.
Also, don’t think you mentioned how long the passage was going to be. Be safe !
This is very good video. love it from Bangladesh.
Lot ah work when you are filming!
Hi James, another fine video you and Holly are my favorites, love your videos
I would love to sail this exact trip some day. I want to cross from Chile to France through to Tonga to Samoa to Fiji to NZ to Australia to PNG.
Merci!
🙏🏻 Merci 🙏🏻
Another awesome segment James. Safe trip to Kiwiland buddy.
Cooked food by someone other than me..... 😄🤣😄😂. Safe travels James!! Looking forward to New Zealand adventures.
Wow, somehow I'm just noticing that you have an interesting dingy engine? 4 cycle maybe ? Looking at your keel I'd say your boat is definitely blue water.
Terrific info Captain James 🤙🏼 Tom and I will be buddy boating down there from Oahu mid to late April next year.
Fiji was easily my favorite cruising grounds in the South Pacific
the fact that you apparently never have been in a "fancy hotel" made me subscribe. seriously though you do passages and videos about them really well. following seas!
also, as a retired professional climbing guide I'd say your solo mast climbing rig could be even safer than being helped up. A toprope belayed below doubles the load, someone else may be controlling the gear, and being lowered off sucks v. rapelling for the same reason. Safer and more efficient to do it yourself--crew could be doing something else.
Yeah I feel a lot safer doing it all myself for sure
✔️ ✔️ ✔️
Very informative video. Looking forward to the passage.
Hope u have got your raincoat for NZ
Pasta e sughi Barilla. Prova anche il sugo all'arrabbiata. Saluti da Venezia.
Does the rice gets bugs in it? We would freeze our rice over night and that seemed to eliminate the rice bug problem....in an unopened bag after two warm weeks they would show up...we were told that freezing would kill any eggs in the rice...
I have never had bugs in my rice
@@SailorJames I hope you never have the displeasure of dealing with rice moths. The larvae love to show up in cereals and grain. They're from Asia but pop up worldwide.
Great vid man!!
Looking forward to the next part of “our” journey. I’m wondering how long it will take to get to New Zealand?
I have a dumb question - how do you clean the hull under the straps they used to lift the boat? Or is there just a stripe of barnacles left? Love your videos Sailor James, thank you for putting these up. Takes me to a happy place!
Not a dumb question, you can’t clean under them if the boat stays in the slings, but it’s easy enough to scrap this small areas once back in the water which is what I did, just didn’t film it 👍🏻
Morris the cat t shitt! Bwahahaha! Dam im old!
Same.
Awesome video once again. I have a question. Do you take the paper off your groceries that your purchased before storing them away. I noticed other sailing channel do as it keeps insect and other unwanted things off your boat. Safe sailing catch you next week
If I buy stuff in boxes and I can throw away the boxes I do.
@@SailorJames Thanks for your quick anser James. Happy Saling
Did bio security in NZ ask to see any documentation on the hull cleaning? With me they just looked from the dock and said it looked clean.
I handed them the documents with the rest of my documents. It was blowing 35 knots when I arrived so they were not lingering outside 😂
I'm not sure how recent these videos are shown from when they are shot but its may 15 as i type this and it just occurred to me that its the equivalent of november in new Zealand. Winter in other words. Im sure you have considered this. Sounds like you will probably get there close to the shortest day of the year in the southern hemisphere. That would be june 21. Man 450 a month for a mooring ball. Thats as high as the ears on a giraffe.
This was shot last November
@@SailorJames i figured it had to be that was the case. The southern oceans are mighty mean in winter. Much more so than the northern hemisphere.
Tuna has a long shelf life 365 cans and your good for the year 😂
What about nylon folding mast steps?
James you cover all the angles with your channel bro, this has been a most fascinating look at how to prepare oneself for a major passage, you nailed it!! My wife says you provision like a man lol, in your defence I told her that it's major difficult to cook at sea especially as you're on your own, so easy nutritious food is the call of the day, she said she'd be cooking up all sorts of gourmet lol, she needs to go on a long passage 😂 Anyhow, the story of James this week was once again incredible, thanks bro....safe travels out there.
Please tell your wife she is absolutely correct 😂 I eat for utility.
Hey James, just curious ... you mentioned exchanging currency at the end of the video ... I really wish that you had touched on that further -- I'm planning on doing what you are doing once I retire in a few more years. Do you carry travelers checks that you exchange country to country, reasonably amount of cash kept on the boat, use bank wires from an account back in the US, or use credit cards to get advances? I've always wondered what everyone doing a does on these "round-the-world excursions."
Nowadays all you need is a debit card. You can pull cash out of any ATM. I usually keep $500 USD cash onboard in case I arrive somewhere without ATMs or in case there was some issue with my bank account.
Hey James great video. Hey, on a side note ... when you are on a long passage have you ever become so tired you just need to stop for a bit and get some sleep? Is it acceptable to heave to in the middle of the ocean and just catch a 4 or 5 hour nap? I know you are supposed to be on watch at all time, but if you did indeed heave to, would it be acceptable/allowable to sleep for a few hours?
There are no rules in the middle of the ocean and it’s only your life and ship you are putting at risk. Solo sailors are not always on watch, it’s not possible. I sleep in 2 hour increments at night with alarms set and an AIS that would warm me of most ships. Yes you could heave too and sleep if needed but in over 8000nm sailing solo I have never needed to.
Hey man thanks for responding. Keep up the great work. 👍
please visit south africa
how long of a passage were you planning for? do you have a meal plan? or do you wing it?
I have done 5 solo ocean passages so I just know what I need. I usually make sure I have 40 days of food on board

"Alexa, remind me to watch this video again in 4 years before I head for Bermuda."
😂😂😂😂😂
Cheers, mate! Lots of good stuff in this, which really sets the bar between what I do - coastal family cruising - and the huge logistics in what you do. I have mast steps on my 'tub'. The guy I bought my boat from had prepared her for a Transatlantic passage and fitted radar and the steps. I've used them and appreciate the structural compromise, re: weakening of the mast. Just wondered, as a blue water cruiser, is this a real consideration?! From your background in LA, one of the most 'consumer societies' in the world, along with any western greed led societies, the way you are living your life is what many of us truly aspire to. You are doing it and your videos refreshingly show us that the transition is not so seamless. A lot of hard work, but you know what thats worth. Good on you, sir!
why do you need to clean the bottom of the boat before going to NZ?
is that the reason is that "you may carry bacteria at the bottom of the boat to NZ"?
You can carry invasive sea life
I wouldn't want to stick the end of the dockside garden hose into my water jugs after seeing certain boaters sticking feet of the end hoses down their pump out outlet.
That hose was specifically to a professional charter boat just for water tanks and there is not pump out facility anywhere near there
❤❤❤
Is there a maximum time period they allow between certified Hull cleaning and arrival in NZ waters? ... and do they check the dinghy?
Within 30 days of your departure. The dinghy was face up on the deck so they could see it was free of growth
Maybe you can use a drone to inspect mast.
You need to put eyes on the rig there is no way a drone would be able to see what you can see with your eyes.
Do your aluminum extrusion windows leak. I had a 82 Catalina 30 and had the same windows and they started to leak as the years went by
All of my hatches and dead lights are bronze and don’t leak. The forward hatch is the only one that is aluminum
@@SailorJames BEAUTIFUL!! She’s built like a tank.
