I’m 72 years old and have been playing the fiddle for the past 20 years. Then, because of arthritis in my hands, I could no longer bend my left index finger. So I quit for a year, thinking I would never play again. During that year, our neighborhood music store went out of business, and was selling everything at very low prices; and I found a “Pixie” harp, which I bought (because I can’t live my life without playing an instrument). I was going to take lessons, but the pandemic hit. So after letting the harp just sit for a long time I finally started with your lessons. I will take a long time to get through lesson one, because I need to do the exercises over and over. Your lesson was great, and I haven’t even gotten to the end of it. I’m taking my time and just practicing the exercises at the very beginning to get them right. Then I will continue. And I’ve taught myself to play the fiddle using only 3 fingers, which makes me very happy! But I’m now going to put my energy into learning how to play the harp. I’m so glad I found you! Thanks!
Hi ! I'm 78 and very little experience in playing an instrument. I want to play the lever harp and I am looking closely at the "Pixie". How do you like yours? This is a great place to learn!
@@handleycrafts8714 It has a great sound, and my husband (a musician) really likes it; however, truth be told, I have never had the time to learn how to play it. @@onlineacademyofirishmusic Hi, and thank you so much for your reply! I went to my local Guitar Center, and they don’t even carry harps in the store... online sales only. I’ve been thinking of buying a Roosebeck Minstrel harp with full Chelby levers on Amazon. I know Roosebeck does not have a great reputation among harpists, but the Chelby levers that they have added seem to work much better than the levers used to work years ago. Also, the one I’m looking at is made of Walnut, which might have more resonance and is probably sturdier than Rosewood. Currently, it’s being sold for $688, so 29 strings with full Chelby levers seems to be a good deal for a beginner harp. This particular harp has had many five star reviews on the page, for quality of sound and sturdiness. Thank you for such clear teachings. I found a small harp in a charity shop but it did not have the tuner with it, which I was not aware of. Is it possible to buy something to tune my harp and if so do you know from where please. Thank you in advance xoxoxo
I'm a beginner. When buying a harp how many strings should it have? What is the most comfortable floor harp height to work with? What would you regard is the best price range for quality? Can you recommend a London based supplier? Thanks.
I'd recommend renting a harp for starting off, there are many places in England that offer this service. Choosing a harp is a personal desicion so I'd recommend trying out a few different types to see which feels best.
Hi Lisa- My grandmother brought her instruments with her from Ireland (likely in lieu of much else!) at the turn of the century--alas, no harp..So I purchased a small harp online from McNeela in Dublin. Will a "baby" harp be suitable for these lessons? I don't see why not but wanted to ask.
It’s cool how you can set the key signature but what happens if you have an incidental note? Do you have to just flip the appropriate lever and then flip it back again as you play?
Hi Lisa, Brilliant video. I particularly like the easy to follow methods and I feel like I will be able to play the harp better due to this video. I've ordered one and it is being delivered hopefully next week. I do have 2 questions: 1) I am interested in tuning my harp to 432hz Verdi's A. Do you know how to do that or is it possible to do this on an electronic tuner? 2) I saw on the oaim.ie you do online tuition from €16 a month (spectacular offer by the way). How many times a week are you available to teach? Or do you offer tuition online? I'm not sure how it works. Although I do have the free account at the moment. I will pay for the main account when my harp arrives. Thanks for your time, Cormac near Trim in Co. Meath (though from the North lol)
Hi Cormac, Delighted to hear you're getting a harp! Glad you liked the lesson as well. @@onlineacademyofirishmusic ok that's great. Thank you for the information. I want to set it to 432hz because it is the sound of harmonious music. Hi Lulu, that sounds good for a beginner instrument. Let us know how you get on with it.
You are so besutiful and you are good teacher thank you😊
Verry helpfull
What harp would people recommend for a complete string novice who hopes to one day play fantasy/DnD inspired music? Thanks
Thank you
Thank you for the exercises. How short are your nails? I find mine are getting in the way from cleanly plucking. Any tips to prevent this or should I have them shorter?
If they're getting in the way you know what to do...
Hello, Lisa
Don't know if you got my last question about laptop Harp.
Can you change or upgrade laptop Harp strings ? if so, What would you recommend.
Sincerely appreciate,
Mr.Kennedy
Hi Mr Kennedy, I'd suggest using google to get the answers. Do you have a luthier close by you could get help from?
Hello Lisa. I am having a problem when I put my left fingers on the lower strings. They get in the way of each other🙁can you advise me what might be wrong. ❤️🙏🕊️
Hi, it's difficult to help you without seeing what you're doing. Can you upload a quick video to UA-cam and we'll have a look. If you email us admin@oaim.ie when you've done that we'll have a look.
Thank you for such clear teachings. I found a small harp in a charity shop but it did not have the tuner with it, which I was not aware of. Is it possible to buy something to tune my harp and if so do you know from where please. Thank you in advance xoxoxo
Hi Christine, Any tuner will get the strings in tune.
Oh fantastic, thank you so much for letting me know that, that's great, really appreciate it 💚💚💚
I'm a beginner.
Could you tell me what the scale to tune to was? Thank you :)
Lisa tunes her harp to B flat. Apologies for the late reply.
My understanding is that you’ll be able to get the melody but not the accompaniment. Most people start by hiring a harp.
i love harp
We too !
Is it granted to buy an irish harp online? And is it expensive?
It looks like your nails are cut very short - is that what is recommended? Short nails on all fingers?
It’s cool how you can set the key signature but what happens if you have an incidental note? Do you have to just flip the appropriate lever and then flip it back again as you play?
Hi, This is the type of question to ask on the www.oaim.ie student forum.
I like the fact, that her hair and the Harp have the Same colour
My family originated from the county of Mayo!
HUP!
As a beginner, which harp is best for me when it comes to the amount of strings? Thanks.
Hi Rachel, That question coms down to cost really. What have you in mind?
I just subscribed!! 😄
hi . for a beginner, is a 22 string or 29 string ok?
Hi Seymour, are you asking about the frets or string gauges?
Hi, Either will be fine for starting but Lisa says that if you go for 29 strings you may as well get all 34. I hope this helps.
14:08 You said Lydian, did you not mean Locrian?
Hi Lisa,
Brilliant video. I particularly like the easy to follow methods and I feel like I will be able to play the harp better due to this video. I've ordered one and it is being delivered hopefully next week. I do have 2 questions:
1) I am interested in tuning my harp to 432hz Verdi's A.
Thanks for your time,
Cormac near Trim in Co. Meath (though from the North lol)
Hi Cormac, Delighted to hear you're getting a harp! Glad you liked the lesson as well. Yes you tune the harp to 432hz using an electronic tuner (can I ask why you wish to do this?). 2, The lessons are all video lessons and you receive 24/7 unlimited access to all the lessons and features on the OAIM website.
@@onlineacademyofirishmusic ok that's great. Thank you for the information.
I want to set it to 432hz because it is the sound of harmonious music. I can send a link showing what the vibrational difference with iron filings with 432hz is like compared to 440hz, as standard music was changed to in the 1800s
Agreed - the thing about playing Irish music is playing with others - We all play at 440hz so you'll have to re-tune your harp for a session.
👍Adorable ❤️Presentation👌
Thank you 🤗
