for anyone who doesn't know, the shuffling sounds as she plays are her pressing the pedals. look at the top of the harp, where the strings meet the metal. every time one string set of those disks move, that's a pedal being moved. there are seven pedals, each with three different positions. that means she's thinking of 21 different positions that her pedals need to move to, sometimes doing multiple at once, with just her two feet, all while her hands play the beautiful strings. this is absolutely incredible... i feel so lucky to be able to listen to her play.
this is absolutely correct! quite a lot of people think that playing the harp is a lot easier than playing the piano, considering their resemblance. but I don think this is true. I have experience playing both and I can say the pedals make it easier because you don't have to constantly remember the accidentals you have in a certain key, but you have to more pedals at an exact time and prevent buzzing all while playing or even memorizing. I find writing pedals for harp music difficult yet fun! it's definitely something you really need to think hard on

It is the musician who makes the most beautiful music, with whatever instrument they have chosen, as the instrument is merely a crude tool to express their inner being. That is why some have the ability to move others to tears of joy with the sound of their voice alone, as the voice is an instrument itself.
@@Skitdora2010 That wasnt her point. Its clear that if we give an ape a harp it will be inferior to a musician who have to play with garbage (in fact the caribian drum was invented that way). Her point was: what music CAN be made for harp. The kind of sound a harp makes, moves some people more, than the sound of another instrument.
Hard to believe she’s 17 yrs old now. I’d love to hear her in person one day. Absolutely beautiful harp music. 🎶 So gifted, and able to be taught and encouraged by the best of the best. Thank you, Alisa. ❤️ August 28, 2020 🇺🇸

This is coming from a teenage violinist/pianist and I found this recording through twoset lol but I’m so glad they brought me here I think that this interpretation is amazing the voicing of the different melodic lines and they way in which she ends the phrases and the dynamics it’s all so amazing. I just wanted to let you know that from a non harpist, don’t get me wrong, I’m sure that this is extremely difficult, also to play it as she does, but she makes it look so effortless, I can tell just how talented she is.
@@Astrobrant2 hi! oh my gosh great question. actually i dont even really know... even for me, the further pedals are quite hard to reach. that looks like a normal pedal harp to me. there are no sizes in pedal harps so i dont think its a smaller harp. great question i love how people are interested in harp :)
@@bananahharpist While watching some harp videos a few years ago and seeing all those gadgets at the top, and also seeing them move and hearing the mechanical clicking and thumping, I went to Wiki and read about the instrument. I was fascinated. I had no idea it was so complex. I had always wondered how the harp could have such a large range with as few strings as that. Now I know. For those who don't know, the seven pedals operate those stops along the top so that each string can play three different notes. Each of six of those pedals has to be held down while needed, and one of them locks with one push, then unlocks with a second push (IIRC). Amazing stuff! Also, viewers, if you notice, harps flare out at the bottom. That's because the whole bottom is a sounding board and serves the same purpose as the body of a guitar or violin: to amplify the sound. Without it, the harp would be hard to hear. Most of what you are hearing is coming from the base, not the strings -- especially for the deeper notes, I would guess, which is why it gets wider at that end of the harp. My daughter was married shortly after I did that research, and there was a harpist for the wedding. I couldn't wait to go see the harp up close and ask the harpist some questions. Unfortunately, she didn't stay for the reception, and left when I wasn't looking.
@@Astrobrant2 yup! with the pedal disks and all the pins, under neath the pedal harp is a literal metal city down there! when u move a pedal, everything changes inside.

Her talent is extraordinary, let's hope she has time to be a little girl, doing things that ordinary girls take for granted. And pray that she doesn't get an inflated idea of her own importance. It must be so hard to have a child who is gifted, to strike the right balance between encouragement and pushing. I'm sure we'll see more of this young lady - if she wants it.
+Marjorie Watkins "has time to be a little girl" Horrible comment, filled with pretentious rambling, and fallacies. this girl looks to be 10x happier then any other girl her age, she was very pleased with her self, as she should have been. I am almost completely speechless! Unbelievable! Stunning! She is absolutely extraordinary in the the way she plays the harp, not just a technician. The harp is a musical extension of her very soul. @@w8sted1 Really? How does matter arise from nothing? I'm sure you have the definitive answer. Why is there SOMETHING instead of NOTHING? Oh please share your wisdom with all of us.
@@lynnfisher3037 hey buddy, just one question... if you truly believe this god - whom you have never seen - is real, why do you get so upset that other people do not believe it? It is plain to see that you're not trying to do this for the benefit of others (preventing them from going to hell or something), but rather to prove a point based simply in blind belief... If people who don't believe in your god are so wrong, why does it matter to you if you will be going to your heaven when you pass?
Awe struck!! Beyond spectacular! AND as mentioned, there are seven pedals that are activated by foot so that flats and sharps can be played. They have to be moved silently and instantly to facilitate and execute the composition's #'s and b's. This what the black keys on a piano, organ or harpsichord do. If not done skillfully the mechanism that "pinches" to raise or lower the length of the string (just like pressing down on the strings of the guitar, violins and cellos) can cause a buzzing or twang sound. This phenomenal talent has been taught, I believe, the French harpist Marcel Grandjany technique of "pulling" on the strings somewhat with the sides of the fingers engaging the more fleshy contact area, creating a more "mellow" type of sound. The other technique taught to pull on the strings was developed by the Spanish harpist Carlos Salzedo. This uses the skin side of the finger tip opposite side from the fingernail. This creates a more "brittle" quality tone similar to the Spanish quitar. I grew up in a household with my harp playing mother who used the harp to accompany herself while singing instead of the piano or quitar. She was an honors choral conductor and piano major at Northwestern University and sang professionally giving concerts throughout Europe, Wis., Chicago and it's North Shore communities during the 50's and 60's. My involment with the harp during that period when I was in high school, consisted of loading the station wagon with several different sized harps and carriers, lights, gowns etc several times a week before I went to school in the morning and then after school when she drove back. She would occasionally include me (piano) and my two sisters (harp) in her programs. By the time my oldest sister graduated from high school she was earning money performing with area and university orchestras that did music that specifically required harp (Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, sung with a women's chorus and other works). She won a national harp competition and was awarded a full tuition scholarship on harp to the Eastman School of Music. She went on to be the harp faculty at the University of Denver and first call union harpist as well as perform in the Denver Symphony. That's why I was so "flabbergasted" hearing this nine year old little girl play the difficult harp standard virtually perfect with such compelling musicianship!!!

My Lord, what a gift to humanity. Such talent and feeling at such a young age. What's equally astounding is at this moment 929 soulless slugs voted thumbs down!?? But in the end, and most importantly, Alisa is an amazing gem...a truly magical and mesmerizing performance. Bravo!!!
I used to be one of those souless slugs.. fearful of the intelligent, of the lucky, fearful of being looked down on, confused. Now I can rejoice with you all and alas expirience this wonder, superb, exciting, the magnificent music to our ears, 'Bravo'. 👏 🌹

I assume they voted down, because the belive a kid of this age shouldn't be drilled to such profession.
I would say, it depends on how its done and if the child like it.
@@Crassus_Auratus agreed, it must be a child's desire and ambition to excel like this. Parents who try to live through their kids by driving them hard is unfortunately not rare.

+Michael Travis Matthews Walls I believe you, Michael! I was gulping back tears myself and shaking my head at such a phenomenal gift for that little girl; the epitome of innocence, ability and beauty.
I cried too. I was thinking, do other people cry at this stuff or am I crazy? lol
Amber: No, your crying isn't crazy. You're simply expressing an emotional response from the kindness in your heart which recognized a "supernatural" gift to an innocent child from a generous and ever-loving God! Good for you! Todays world definitely needs more tears from kind hearts like yours! :-)
+Lindy Loo thank you! Yes, I believe in God. I become overjoyed with His beautiful creation! He manifests it through people, music, and nature. There is so much beauty.
Thank you for your response, Amber. Not only is she talented AF, she also FEELS the music - WOW

Truly the harp makes the most beautiful music in the world.
and violin
Take a listen to the opera Lucia Di Lammermoor
So an angel has been filmed and no one is talking about it?

She is an angel of music who descended to earth, so it's not surprising that she can perform magnificently despite her age

AH MY GOOSH u dont understand how hard this isss! she's so good!! the placings, dynamics, expressions, phrasing, gracefulness, rhythm, EVERYTHING!! i wonder how impressive this is to a non-harpist watching this, because knowing how difficult this is, me being a harpist myself, this is really really hard! she's awesome! keep it up! :DD
I'm wondering how she can even reach the pedals. Is it a smaller harp?
She looks like a little angelic angel playing so beautifully 💙🌸

This and ballet was all I wanted at her age. I did not get to have that life, but I'm crying because she does. And I'm so happy. I'm happy her family guided to pursue such a beautiful talent. This heals the heart. 💜🌈
You're a good sport. I'm not. But I believe in reincarnation and that I deserve to have a more fulfilling life next time around.
play the harp now, try to be happy, maybe she was forced to play that well at such a young age, maybe her life is a nightmare because of the harp
I bet this is what they play in heaven. My mouth was wide open when she played the first five notes and remained open for the rest of the video.
Her color changes and her phrasing are absolutely immaculate!!
+Marjorie Watkins "has time to be a little girl"
Horrible comment, filled with pretentious rambling, and fallacies. this girl looks to be 10x happier then any other girl her age, she was very pleased with her self, as she should have been. Praise is deserved and should be given to those special as her self.
...ironic.
I am almost completely speechless! Unbelievable! Stunning! She is absolutely extraordinary in the the way she plays the harp, not just a technician. The harp is a musical extension of her very soul. I marveled throughout the entire piece, absolutely spellbound! Her natural beauty was just the icing on the cake!
