Dude splurge on an SE (Student Edition). I may be biased but pick up a used Custom 24 on Reverb/Ebay for $400-500. I was shocked how goodvit was with a Custom 24 I bought a Torero which features a Floyd Rose, Ebony fretboard (NO inlays), binding on the body and fretboard, and is mated with an EMG 81/85 set of pickups, I got an aqua one used for $600!
I had a 1980 Les Paul Deluxe which I couldn't bare to keep when I got an offer of $2000 for it. Honestly my 2010 Custom 24 and my Torero sounded 90% and 95% as good as my LP, different tonally but "as good overall", so my Black Beauty went bye-bye!
