This is by far the best remake of a song I have ever heard. The imagery and delivery by David Draiman make this one of the most impactful songs ever. {IMO}
It really was a great experience listening the sound of silence in a different version from the original and for it to be atleast as good as the original, that is seldom the case, and i really enjoyed the video in the background, felt apocalyptic
David Draiman of Disturbed, was trained as a cantor. His grandfather was a famous cantor in Israel. Disturbed is a heavy metal band, but they aren't afraid to expand and try new things, they don't get stale or stagnant. They are fantastic, I'm a 71 y o granny and they are my favorite band, many styles to fit my many moods.
Exactly I'm also a young 71yr nan and all my 14 grandkids love my music tastes especially "Distured David" lol I absolutely LOVE HIM has anyone seen the shorts of the working Belgian Malinois if not look it up they use Disturbed Sound of Silence they are trained for the American Army its a bloody WOW!!! ENJOY ALL 😉
Their singer David is classically trained as a cantor in the Jewish faith. But that was many years ago. He said it was gratifying to sing like he did when he was younger.
I saw Disturbed in concert a few months ago. This is more powerful in person. They put on a terrific show. The arena got hot from the pyrotechnics but all was worth it.
"I expect explosions" ha ha. Yes, some reactionists don't and are surprised. Some who know Disturbed are in tears unexpectedly. Now you can watch other reactionists go through the same thing. There are hundreds of them on here. Even professional singing instructors and classical music instructors are teary eyed. It's very entertaining and I still get goosebumps. Thank you for making your video.
The singer of Disturbed is David Draiman. He was raised in Chicago as an Orthodox Jew and was trained as a Cantor as was his grandfather and father. I think he left the Orthodox Jewish faith in his twenties. He joined the heavy metal band Disturbed in 1994 or 1995. At all of their concerts they acknowledge suicide victims by drug overdosed victims and bring someone on stage in recognition of their loved one who lost their lives due a to drug overdose or suicide. They recorded the cover of "The Sound of Silence" in 2016. It currently has 1,051,853,839 views and I believe is the 3rd most watched cover video.
I have never, growing up in the best decades of music in America, experienced a reaction to a song like this! It just once, but EVERY TIME I hear it! The only other song that could even be considered in the same stratosphere was Whitney Houston singing the national anthem after 911.
I've watched over 30 reaction videos and it visibly took your breath away, I'm so glad you didn't stop it and took it all in. You'll never be the same after this...to have a song reach that deep into the depth of our souls is incredible...the message too, I think is like a double entendre...loved your reaction.
David was a Gulliard graduate. But before he was born God told him. You will be a singer. Do you want the voice of an angel or a demon. He replied “both.”
Julliard? I don’t believe he went to Julliard. He went to Loyola University Chicago. He graduated with a BA in Political Science and Government, Philosophy, and Business Administration
Ummmm, nope. He was training to be a Cantor in Chicago. He had several infractions, last straw which they could not prove, the Rabbi's van blew up😂 they kicked him out.
I subscribed to your channel because I saw the same emotion in your face that I feel when I hear the songs you are reacting to. Music that brings souls together through art and emotion. I also really enjoy your Dimash reactions. Much love from Canada 🇨🇦
There is a live recording of this on Conan O'Brian's Show...I hope you listen to it...He was suffering flu or cold or something but sang it anyway. Some have said auto-tune was used (in case he couldn't reach the notes) but it WAS NOT NEEDED. For me, the live version cemented my respect for David and Disturbed as a whole. Its one oof the best covers I've heard todate. Great reaction and I'm glad you were impressed.
Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like an emotional rollercoaster ride, slowly bringing us to the top, then quickly crashing to the bottom.....Great reaction!!!
It took watching this about 10 times before I could watch it and not cry. It’s a beautiful cover. The absolute best cover! David Draiman is amazing. I am 61 and I just discovered this cover a few months ago. It sent me on a search of Disturbed. Now, at 62, I am a huge Disturbed fan.
Simon and Garfunkel wrote and sang this as a warning. Disturbed, David, sang it as that warning was NOT taken so here we are. I very much love this version.
Not sure what your taste in music is, but some of Disturbed’s songs are kind of like this one. Hold on to Memories and A Reason to Fight are two that non-rock fans would probably like. A louder song that I would introduce to new Disturbed listeners is The Light. I wouldn’t go straight to Down With The Sickness unless you like hard rock and metal - ease into that one.
I read somewhere that Paul Simon liked to sit in his bathroom, lights out, with his guitar, because it was so acoustical and he could create in the darkness. “Hullo darkness my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again…”
I grew up in the 60s right next to NYC. Simon and Garfunkel are from NYC and their songs so beautifully capture that unique City. The song originally appeared on a Gospel/Folk album in 1964, but became a hit on the pop/rock charts when released as a single in 1966. They did the sound track for "The Graduate" with Dustin Hoffman in 1967. If you don't understand the Biblical allusions in this song, you won't really get the full meaning. And knowing that the words of the prophets really were written on the subway walls, LITERALLY. So historically true! If you know that, you really see the brilliance of the parallel imagery with the writing on the wall from the Bible. This song is about the human condition that hasn't changed since the dawn of man, and is truly one of the darkest, saddest of songs. The irony of being utterly alone even in a sea of "ten thousand people, maybe more" - In my memories I envision Times Square back in the day when it was booming. Throngs of people, but no one making eye contact. People not communicating anymore on a deep emotional level. *Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you* … “Jerusalem, O Jerusalem! How I have longed to gather your children into my arms as a mother hen gathers her chicks! But you would not." And Jesus wept. *And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made!* And they/WE worshipped the golden calf. False idols and gods of our own making. *"The sign flashed out its warning, in “the words that it was forming”* … the *“words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls”* … And just what were the words that supernaturally formed on the wall in the book of Daniel? They told the king that he had been JUDGED and found wanting. His kingdom is taken from him. By the next morning, the king is dead and Babylon has fallen. Just like that. The NYC urban imagery is brilliant and so historically true. But the parallel Biblical imagery combined with the NYC imagery is beyond brilliant. (I still have "Wednesday Morning 3AM from 1964!)
the 'vocal fry' you heard in the most dramatic moments is not screaming, which hurts the vocal chords, but rather a technique that does not damage them. David D has been 'screaming' since the 1990s, so living proof ...
This cover changed my life when i heard it. Im a musician, so having hear so much music over my life, it wasnt easy to impress me (and particularly difficult to make me react emotionally, but this one by David made me cry like a child. Even after listening to it multiple times, i still tear up.
You should also watch to live version from the Conan TV show. In an interview I recently saw, he said he had a lesion on a vocal but decided to perform anyway. He had an ENT on standby just in case. The performance was fantastic!
You have some good insight with vocal "expectations"....where it's going without having heard this song. I grew up on Simon & Garfunkel's version, though, didn't really pay attention to it when released in the mid 60s until years later due to following British rock bands back then. So, when I heard Disturbed's version a few years ago, man, it caught me off guard, coming from now, a SmoothJazz background, but I found I liked this kind of "darker" version. It kind of harkened back to my rock days in a way. It still paid tribute to the original, melodically, but had an urgency befitting the current times through his undoubtedly interesting vocals...and his looks which I wasn't sure I liked or not 😃 along with imagery suggesting doom if we don't do something. His delivery made you really listen to the lyrics which are still relevant after all this time to our current time. For me, it was the best cover I heard in over 50 years....hard to believe it's been that long. I was so impressed, had to share it with my daughter. So yeah, I do like this version...I love his voice in this one. I also saw a final live performance a few years back of Simon and Garfunkel performing this song and wish I had the link because it is the best performance of this song from them, IMO. Their vocals were mature, and to me, Garfunkel seemed at his best here. Their harmonizing was better than I remembered from their earlier days. Found the link, yes, I searched..😂 It's from 2009 at the 25th Anniversary of the R&R Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden. m.ua-cam.com/video/bWZWhp-Zh9M/v-deo.html Thanks for your reaction to Disturbed. 👍
oh boy. You should see the live version on Conan. And then if you want to become even more confused about someone's vocal range, look up "16 Tons" covered by Geoff Castellucci. Have fun.
Love your detailed appreciation of this amazing cover. Have u gone down the Australian music rabbit hole yet? Here's a few that I feel you'll love (ok I'm slightly biased being Aussie lol). John Farnahm... anything live especially from his live concert with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (Help & You're The Voice, plus ACDC cover of Long Way To The Top), John singing When Something Is Wrong With My Baby with Jimmy Barnes (from Cold Chisel), Kasey Chambers singing her cover of Eminem's Lose Yourself or Ain't No Little Girl, anything by Vanessa Amorosi especially Piece Of My Heart (Janis Joplin cover.. amazing!).. & that's just the beginning of the Aussie rabbit hole. Enjoy!!! Oh & hi from Queensland Australia
I enjoy many songs by Disturbed, and David Draiman has become one of my favorite vocalists. Another song by Disturbed that is somewhat different than their norm is “The Light”, David can master different styles and it doesn’t disappoint.
Paul Simon The Singer/Songwriter of The Sound of Silence Heard David's version and Liked it so much that He put it on his Playlist. This Song By David came out in Late 2015. He sang it Live On the Conan O'Brien Show in March 2016. Check That one out! By the way, I liked and Subscribed. 😊
Thank you. I enjoyed this very much. I listen to it at least once a fortnight and love seeing people react to it. I would like to hear what you think of the Russian girl, Diana Ankudinova, singing Rechenka or The River. She is a dramatic contralto who is also polyphonic. The video is from a competition she entered when she was 15. Of course she won it. Her voice is haunting and touches my soul. I cry every time I hear it. I wonder if you would like it?
I just turned 76 in October and I was 15 years old when Paul Simon wrote this song in November of 1963 and later Simon and Garfunkle released the song in 1964, so I grew up listening to the original m.ua-cam.com/video/nkUOACGtGfA/v-deo.html . I'll admit, I'm a visual person and just the videography is spectacular. Infact, after Paul Simon watched the Disturbed - The Sound of Silence (Official Music Video) [4K UPGRADE] video ua-cam.com/video/u9Dg-g7t2l4/v-deo.htmlsi=y8XytRInf8LqGSqh he was so impressed that he told them that the song now belonged to them.
I could see in your expressions as the song was touching your soul, the exact same reaction i had. I couldnt speak after and had to sit alone and process what just happened lol. Thank you for your great reaction! May i please suggest another by Disturbed called The Light? I love what he does with his voice in it also
In my opinion, David is (rightfully) directing his anger toward the listeners for ignoring Paul Simon's warning when he originally told us about the evils of "the sound of silence" in the 1960s. This led us, at least here in the US, to our political discord in the 21st century.
You can also see David and Disturbed sing "The Sound of Silence" live performance on Conan NOTE: David Draiman was really sick and was running a high fever, for the Conan live performance, and I heard he was not pleased with his performance. Being the perfectionist that he is, I can understand why he felt that way. However, the production as a whole was amazing, and his performance was EXCEPTIONAL! I loved it. So POWERFUL and EMOTIONAL! - Disturbed "The Sound Of Silence" 03/28/16 | CONAN on TBS Team Coco: m.ua-cam.com/video/Bk7RVw3I8eg/v-deo.html I hope you will also give us your reaction on this video
I do not call this a cover song. It is an experience and stands on its own merit. Still giving kudos to Paul Simon but Cover or not. Doesnt matter, It is its own power and emotion. If you don't get chills, or emotional or tears then there is something seriously wrong with you. He has a vocal range of over three octaves, from E2 to B5: he is ..amazing.
Thank you so much for listening nearly all the way through without pausing every farts end to give your opinion. A refreshing change to those other reaction videos that just pause every 5 seconds to give their "professional and arrogant" (I can judge David Draiman and Disturbed 'cause i'm a UA-cam influencer, total bollocks) opinion and ruin the actual performance. You waited until the end to give your opinion, and that was bloody great. Now subscribed. Keep up the good work, we need to give these arrogant arseholes, who think they know what they are talking about, a kick up the proverbial arse. Your reaction and comments are/were totally valid. Please review "Down With The Sickness" by Disturbed. A classic heavy metal song. Edited for spelling.
My brother used to puss me off he had that range. I was a first soprano. And he could match me. But i couldn't hit any of the low notes. Now i can but cant hit the high notes. Lol
Someone likely has already mentioned this, but after hearing this cover Paul Simon himself said this song now belongs to Disturbed.... 1 billion views for this video, yeah I think most people would agree 🤘
Check these two live performances by Adam Lambert... You will get some follows from these: Plus they are amazing Queen and Adam Lambert Who Wants to Live Forever Live ua-cam.com/video/9C6DPHosZZg/v-deo.html Adam Lambert Believe Live ua-cam.com/video/5PzQHZLiUPs/v-deo.html
Do yourself a favor and Watch the video again. The visuals bring a whole new meeting to the song and the lyrics itself. The writing of the music on paper and then the music disappearing from the paper as its being picked up off the ground.
Moderator here. We usually leave a link to the original in the description. Just saying. Also, the way UA-cam flags reaction videos for copyright notices & content blocks depends on various factors, including how many times the video being reacted to is interrupted.

The first time I heard this remake, I cried like a baby..I've always loved Disturbed and David recreated an older masterpiece into a new one!

Cry Cry Cry OMG the power of this song with David from Disturbed just pierces the soul

Love watch people’s reaction to this song. The head movements. The sounds. The emotion. Would love to see it performed on the Grammys
This version lifts my soul. I want to Shoutout!!! People wake up!!! Pray for peace.🙏🙏🙏❤️

Definatly watch them live on Conan. The man was so sick had like a 102 fever and still nailed every word !!
that was an amazing preformance
The video is much better.
They used auto tune on the Conan show and David wasn't happy about it.
Yes you can see right when they did it . His face !!

Draiman's voice goes from pure hot chocolate, through strength to dynamite. I can listen over and over again.
I read somewhere that Paul Simon liked to sit in his bathroom, lights out, with his guitar, because it was so acoustical and he could create in the darkness. “Hullo darkness my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again…”
You obviously know quality music when you see, hear and feel it...
I grew up in the 60s right next to NYC. Simon and Garfunkel are from NYC and their songs so beautifully capture that unique City. The song originally appeared on a Gospel/Folk album in 1964, but became a hit on the pop/rock charts when released as a single in 1966.
*Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might reach you* …
“Jerusalem, O Jerusalem! How I have longed to gather your children into my arms as a mother hen gathers her chicks! But you would not." And Jesus wept.
*And the people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made!* And they/WE worshipped the golden calf. False idols and gods of our own making.
*"The sign flashed out its warning, in “the words that it was forming”* … the *“words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls”* …
And just what were the words that supernaturally formed on the wall in the book of Daniel?
The sound of silence, it literally leaves me speechless every time... a profound 'what just happened to me?' silence!
This cover changed my life when i heard it. Im a musician, so having hear so much music over my life, it wasnt easy to impress me (and particularly difficult to make me react emotionally, but this one by David made me cry like a child. Even after listening to it multiple times, i still tear up.
The Original was "The Warning"...this version is the anger for not listening to the Warning.
Exactly correct ! The same dream sent to a new voice to carry the message,.
The most impressive reaction I have ever seen to this video. Thank you....
You should also watch to live version from the Conan TV show. In an interview I recently saw, he said he had a lesion on a vocal but decided to perform anyway. He had an ENT on standby just in case. The performance was fantastic!
The Conan version is so much better believe it or not. So powerful.

In my opinion, David is (rightfully) directing his anger toward the listeners for ignoring Paul Simon's warning when he originally told us about the evils of "the sound of silence" in the 1960s. This led us, at least here in the US, to our political discord in the 21st century.
You can also see David and Disturbed sing "The Sound of Silence" live performance on Conan
NOTE: David Draiman was really sick and was running a high fever, for the Conan live performance, and I heard he was not pleased with his performance. Being the perfectionist that he is, I can understand why he felt that way. However, the production as a whole was amazing, and his performance was EXCEPTIONAL! I loved it. So POWERFUL and EMOTIONAL! - Disturbed "The Sound Of Silence" 03/28/16 | CONAN on TBS Team Coco:

I hope you will also give us your reaction on this video
He is a natural baritone, but yes he can go lower, and clearly can manage a respectable tenor range as well

Nice reaction.
Highly recommend the live set in Conan
They are best known for down with the sickness. You should give it a listen
For sure try this same song on the Conan O Brian Show. It is at least as good.
Please listen to Jonathan Antoine singing "Unchained Melody" or "Nessun Dorma"...or what ever Song you might like ❤😊
Beautiful
Gotta see the live version
No seems to get the beginning is THE SOUND OF SILENCE IS SILENCE😊
If you want to hear a baritone who uses his upper registers look up Kim Taehyung from BTS. Check his new song Winter Ahead and an older Sigma.💜💜
New sub! Great reaction!
💜💜💜
He did a live version on Jimmey Kemmel, it sounds damn near the same.
It was Conan. Not Jimmy kimmel
they do it live on connan obrian show he was also sick keep that in mind almost did not do the show he had the flu
Please please react or just listen to “ hi ren” it blew my mind as a artist. It describes the internal struggle perfectly
My brother used to puss me off he had that range. I was a first soprano. And he could match me. But i couldn't hit any of the low notes. Now i can but cant hit the high notes. Lol
Epic!!!!
Someone likely has already mentioned this, but after hearing this cover Paul Simon himself said this song now belongs to Disturbed.... 1 billion views for this video, yeah I think most people would agree 🤘
Check these two live performances by Adam Lambert... You will get some follows from these: Plus they are amazing

Adam Lambert Believe Live ua-cam.com/video/5PzQHZLiUPs/v-deo.html
He was trained as a Cantor
Do yourself a favor and Watch the video again. The visuals bring a whole new meeting to the song and the lyrics itself. The writing of the music on paper and then the music disappearing from the paper as its being picked up off the ground.
Beautiful, isn’t it…
If you like this check out and react to the conan obrien live performance

Why is your video in video SO blurry? Seen many of these reacts videos and this is a first that actually hurt my eyes.
Because I'm short-sighted

Too many interruptions - reserve comments for the end.
