      Well, the bass tone is all about pickups and type of strings, and amp, and so on (tone wood being a myth). What changes with more expensive bases is build quality and playability! And if they have decent enough pickups, it's not like there would be a 120 times difference in tone quality ($12k vs $100).

    I guessed it right, but only because the Amazon bass seemed to have some intonation issues. Tone-wise, I didn't hear much of a difference. The Amazon bass even sounded 'treblier', but I guess that's due to having new strings.
    With a proper set up, this cheap bass seems totally workable with.

    1 fodera. 2 amazon. Just the noise floor alone gave the Amazon bass away. The smoothness of the foderas tone is NOICE. But 12k!? This would be much harder (for me) between a £600 well setup bass and the £12k fody.

    The reality here and in many other areas is that modern processes have raised the quality of even the cheap knockoffs significantly higher that of the past. This is great news for the learners and dabblers who can actually get closer to a real taste of the thing, and maybe be more likely to stick with it... I was in this group and a really fun knock off was my gateway to bass.

    This is my current pet peeve. Turning the tone knob all the way down is really in vogue right now but it really kills the unique qualities (or lack thereof) of any bass. At that point, it doesn't matter what bass you're playing, as long as it's in tune and is comfortable to play. However, I like to hear some tone from a bass, so I might be a bit snobbish toward the cheapest basses.

    • @TracksWithDax
      @TracksWithDax Рік тому +2

      You have a good point. In the right hands with the right settings, you can basically equalize the playing field. The real expense of higher end basses is in material and craftsmanship - a guitar made on a CNC will probably be 95% good most of the time, but it lacks the care of detail that makes it a pleasure for the player right out of the box

    • @matthewmorter7803
      @matthewmorter7803 Рік тому +2

      I was thinking the same thing, that he tried to match the fodera to the sound of the cheap bass, to make it harder for us lol. I like my tone knob all the way up usually too.

    • @EpictheEpicest
      @EpictheEpicest Рік тому +3

      A P-bass pickup with the tone at 10 is going to sound nothing like a dual coil 5-string pickup with the tone at 10, no matter which one is more or less expensive. That would have made it a dead giveaway. In his J-bass vs Fodera video he had the tones up because they were both single-coil pickups. P-bass vs P-bass would have been better comparison but not as big of a price gap per se.

    • @pgmorrow
      @pgmorrow Рік тому +5

      @@EpictheEpicest You're right. They would sound nothing alike if the tone were not severely rolled off. This is like comparing the vocals of Sid Vicious and Maria Callas with socks stuffed in their mouths. It's pointless.

    Well, my assumption was correct, Fodera #1 and Amazon #2, there was a lot more noise to the Amazon bass. That Fodera had me for a few moments though, that bass has a lovely P style tone. That, and Scott's bass face always seems to give away when he's playing something really nice, vs a lower quality bass.

    Bass #1 had me as the PB at first because I did not expect the Fodera to sound like that. After bass #2 I was convince from the overtones of the other strings, the noise from sliding on the fretboard that was the P bass. Also, you seem to have much more pleasure playing the first bass. Overall, I think the sound the fish bass takes the cake. 😁

    I bought a $250 Chinese Ric 4003 off Ali-somethingorother about 10 years ago. It has two extra frets, the goofiest sounding pickups, a bridge that's basically non-adjustable due to poor machining, and piss-poor electronics. I have to smack it once in a while because the pickup selector switch is so corroded, even after countless squirts of contact cleaner.
    You know what other musicians say to me after a show with it? "THAT RICKENBACKER SOUNDS AMAZING! YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL A REAL RICK THE WAY IT STANDS OUT!! I LOVE THAT TOAAAN"

I started and stopped playing a couple times but lately I’ve been trying to learn how to play it again. It’s junk but it works for me to learn. The “E” string vibrates too much and one of the plastic tuning knobs cracked and broke off a while ago. I tell myself that I will some day buy a better base when I’m happy with my improvement in playing. I appreciate the videos because it helps me learn more about how to play better! 👍

    Did you folks ever get around to getting the Amazon bass setup ? I had a 1960 Tiesco guitar which was my first guitar & I could never get it to play right , constant buzz & many other problems . I traded it in 1975 to a bud for a set of flatwounds for my CopyCat Jazz bass . I thought I got the better end of the deal . My but tore the Tiesco down to bare neck & body & slowly got it back together & he giged with that guitar for years . I haven't seen him in years but last time I saw him he said he has many much nicer guitars but still plays the Tiesco .You may find you have a diamond in the rough .

    Without looking at anybody else's ccomments: Fedora bass 1, Amazone bass 2. My guess is based on the intonation, especially the last chord. Seems like the neck hasn't been properly adjusted and I doubt the Fedora would have that problem.
    Edit: wow, I can't spell, can I? To be fair, I was typing without looking at the screen lest I see what someone else wrote. So I said the Fodera was bass 1 and I was correct. WOOT!

    Bass #2 is the amazon, just on seeing Scott face while playing. 😊 It's all in the hands (and soundwise the pickup, that you can change) Buy a Fodera is buy an absolute piece of craftmanship and a great instrument. It can be more inspiring to play but can't make you play better. But if you buy a cheap instrument, you have to know how to make it playable with good setup (fret work, bridge, nut and truss rod adjustement). For the rest it's all in your head for what's written on the headstock. I saw a few years ago Bireli Lagrene playing alone on a 200 bucks yamaha pacifica, jaw dropped, godly tone.

    Not gonna lie, I thought it was swapped, only because I like a brighter bass sound. Really in a blind test with tone being in the same ballpark, the only thing that matter is how it feels to the player. In that respect, the player would probably perform differently depending on how comfortable the bass feels to play. Otherwise it's hard to make a guess based solely on the sound of the strings and pickups

    @jonthecomposer Рік тому

    I didn't comment, but I did guess Fodera for bass 1. It really came down to the low E response for me. Bass 1's E response was greater as well as more uniform. And I've found that a main sign of a bass being of lesser quality is that very thing: E and (for 5 strings) B response. However, I definitely agree with Scott that the sound is in the hands. For the most part, they sounded very similar. I'd say with a good setup, and a slightly better pickup install, the cheap bass would be within 95% of the Fodera sound-wise for most playing requirements. That's NOT to say that the Fodera isn't worth the money or that it's not as good as its price tag suggests. I'm sure the Fodera is superior in every way. It's just unfortunate that with it being a bass, its strong points aren't as in-your-face as a typically up-front instrument like guitar.

    I was right only becose of the low string action at 2:53 min mark in the video, and the deeper sound of bass one compare to bass two. But like you said, it depends on who plays it.

    I know everyone is complaining about the noise on the Amazon one but I would say the flipside of it is that the Fodera hides some stuff I would prefere to be accessible. Put it another way, I feel I would need to boost the treble on the Fodera and not the other one.

    The Fodera has 2 humbuckers, while the cheap P-Bass only has this split coil pickup. So Scott had to adjust the sound of the Fodera in order to avoid that one can recognize it by the sound of the (a) bridge pick.

    #1 Amazon #2 Fodera Scott played #2 bass, last tone is noisy. That noise is string resonance, I think. Fodera is 5 stings. Maybe No mute. And sound of #2 bass is clear and just like a EQ sound. That’s why #2 is Fodera.

    I would be very interested in a video where the relative importance of strings, pickups and body were explored. Assuming that all the basses were set up as well as they could be.
    Just from my experience I would say that the strings make a much bigger difference than the pick ups and the body would be the least important.

    Wow, OK, so I'm pretty sure this Amazon bass is the one a friend gave me several years ago when she was moving, that I decided to start playing last year. It has been very difficult to play -- the action is so high and it's made my hands and forearms hurt. And of course, that has been extremely discouraging, since I really do enjoy playing. So I am going to go get a set up to see if that helps. But, also, probably time to buy a bit nicer of a bass for serious study.

    My guess is 1) Fodera, 2) Amazon. I would say that learning to set up a bass (or guitar) is part of owning one, although I might be a little biased as I assembled my first bass (a Hayman 40/40) from parts and set it up myself.

    My first bass was the first in my long list of homemade instruments. It was a multilaminated teardrop body (remember this is in the 60's when Vox and the Beatles were popular) and had a Framus neck because I had no idea how to make a neck (I was 16). I sold that after I went to college at 17 and bought a Gibson EB-0 which I later converted into an EB-3.

    Fidora#1 Mystery Bass #2 However, changing the set up on #2 could make a difference. To me the sound of a bass is 1rst, 2nd is feel or personal playability. That is why for me a Gibson bass is better than a Fender bass - just a personal preferance.

    I got it correct but I was surprised of how difficult it was with the dry tones. The difference wasn't super clear to me and I felt very nervous of getting it wrong. I think it goes to show that a good player can sound good on a bad bass. Also I think listening to these live from an amp in a room would make the difference way more noticeable.

  • @khalilwright3869

    I knew immediately that bottom end of the first bass wasn't a P. Listening to the first few notes of the second confirmed it.
    Is it just me, or does it sound like you're not DI'd straight to the recording device, or have post eq? Having this completely clean from 50HZ to 15kHZ would really give us a better understanding of the tone!
    The Fodera sounds like my Schecter Stiletto Custom 5. Makes me realize how good of a choice I made with it!

    I got it right. But lets keep in mind you can take a $100 bass and tweek stuff to make it more comfortable to play. You could just take it to another level and rip the cheepy apart and redo it to make it your own. Its a very rewarding project if your into that stuff. SBL has some great vids on how to do this stuff. I bought a Ibanez $170 bass GSR100EX just to have a practice bass I can fling around. Its light and looks good. Out of the box it wasn't too bad but after some tweeks to the neck, action and intonation, it plays great and sounds like a vintage bass. I started using it at gigs and I get a lot of compliments on it. It's not my only bass but I love it as much as the pricey ones I own. Cheers all!

    1=Fodera. I only say that because you seemed to be struggling a bit more to play the second bass. It looked like you were physically having to put more effort into it. Now, you are a clever guy so you might be doing that on purpose! You made both basses sound good.

    At first I thought the first bass is the cheap one 'cause the rattling sounds made the impression that you struggle to play it. I've got a really cheap bass from Aliexpress so that looked similar. But then I listend to the second bass and changed my mind. The second one's tone has too much highs and it is too noisy, so I don't believe that someone would pay much for it :)
    So my guess is: 1) Fodera 2) Amazon

    I picked the Fodera as bass #1 solely on the tone. It was much more pleasing and smoother that bass #2. I suspected that I would be able to discern a difference in intonation, but you did marvelous job masking differences there.
