Yeah, we have those terrestrial crawfish, and their funny little mounds all over the yard. I guess it's because the ground water is only a few feet below the surface in some spots. The little guys won't be there much longer though, I'm afraid. A lithium company (Piedmont Lithium) is getting ready to strip mine about 1800' from my property. They're sure to disrupt, if not outright ruin the ground water.

My Uncles favorite way to get us out of the house, was to take us to the creek behind Grandma and Grandpa's trailer to build a dam. As a kid being allowed to play in the creek and get wet in the summer was like heaven. We could play at the creek and throw rocks if we wanted to. But to be sent to the creek, so the grown-ups could talk in peace... that was special. I've never lived more than a mile away from a creek or a river. We always called them crawdads, didn't care how it was spelled... keep doing what your doing
Your overnight videos are by far my favorite! Another great video! I know what you mean about the creek bringing you back to your childhood. I grew up fishing and hiking the banks of a river behind my childhood home. Always brings back good memories 😀

Luke, I am an old Army retiree. I have three daughters. On the middle one’s 21’st birthday I was in Baghdad. We got called to surgery for 21 yo female soldier. Her mandible had been ripped off her face, gone. Her top teeth were broken away from and hanging from her skull. When I barely pushed on the left side of her forehead the right side of her head moved too...in a crushed sick way. I know that you are so excited for your daughter to be military; but, remember, she didn’t join to be a safe civilian. I care for you and your family more than I can say. Love her, love her, love her... Texas

Your walk makes me so homesick. I have been all over the globe, with the Army. There is no place on this earth more beautiful than those sweet mountains. One time, when I was in my 20s, I hiked up and down Mount LaCont to see the sunrise, before Sunday School. It took 4 hours. It was worth it. God bless you and yours. Texas

Great choice on the location, gorgeous piece of woods! Bummer about no fires! For me the campfire is one of my favorite parts of the trip. Still, getting out is better than not getting out at all! I miss the woods!

I noticed a black birch on this video. The bark and roots can be boiled down to make a birch beer (wintergreen flavor). Yellow birch has the same flavor but not as much. In the spring the sap can be collected and boiled down to a syrup like maple syrup is. In some open areas you can find a wintergreen red berry along the ground (don't confuse it with Partridge berry). Combined with spruce gum, you can make a chewing gum to relieve thirst. The leaves can make a wintergreen tea.
You're probably familiar with the Japanese concept of Shinrin-Roku, literally, "Forest Bathing" which is been found to be very therapeutic for anxiety, depression and many other ailments. Two of the most therapeutic elements in Shinrin-Roku are Wind in the trees,. and the sound of Running Water, a babbling creek. That may be why it is so relaxing to watch and listen to this this video!

thanx for your statement about back roads vs. interstate. as a trucker, I wish that more people would use them, especially in cities. most times, trucks MUST use the big road. 4 wheelers can go any where.

Were we supposed to answer what that crawfish chimney was? They use those to hunker down in and they're all over here where we live in Southwest Louisiana. Anywhere that's low and damp, they build them. I saw a pasture the other day that was filled with crawfish chimneys and was amazed because I've never seen them so thick like that. When my husband mows over a chimney, the poor little crawfish starts to put it back up ASAP. Where does the name yabbie come from? One day, when the kids were still little, I came home and found a huge crawfish that had gone through the gate to the dog yard and all my yorkies were going nuts. That brave little crawfish was going after them, brandishing its big claws at them, trying to scare them. Yorkies don't have the sense to be scared of anything (gets a lot of them killed!), so they were barking their heads off and pushing in the pen gate in toward the little critter, but it was so funny to see. I have a couple of photos of that somewhere. Anyway, it did NOT like it that I picked it up and saved its life. Ferocious little things that they are. May 2024--I saw one of your videos that you were going to go camping in a hurricane? That's not smart. God be with you.

If a stream isn't too deep, you can cross by piling up stones into a ford. Another option is to carry a couple plastic sleeves like long bread wrappers or paper delivery covers and slip your legs into them and then tie them over the tops of your boots like gaiters. Boots need to be goretex or at least reasonably waterproof. You still need to cross quickly.

Got back today from a car tent camping with my 2 sons’ Boy Scout Troop In SE Michigan. Yesterday’s wake up temp was 22’ with a wind chill of 10’. This morning wake up temp was 27’, no wind. Good Times
It being a well maintained trail and trail markers being seen on trees it is obviously a public trail. I get keeping your bushwhacked camp site a secret but let us NC folks know of a place we might not have been to so we can enjoy it.
This was a laugh a minute Luke very enjoyable adventure the stories about your daughter were very funny. The things that go bump in the night are always a mystery but you handled it well, like you have a choice Ha-ha sorry you could not have a campfire in such a great stop.
I too think you may have heard a bigfoot. The next morning I would have investigsted the area where I heard the noise and looked for footprints. Beautiful country we live in. Thanks for showing us a little piece of it.

I made a wax and cardboard " campfire in a can" that does a fantastic job standing in for a fire.

If a stream isn't too deep, you can cross by piling up stones into a ford. Another option is to carry a couple plastic sleeves like long bread wrappers or paper delivery covers and slip your legs into them and then tie them over the tops of your boots like gaiters. Boots need to be goretex or at least reasonably waterproof. You still need to cross quickly.

Got back today from a car tent camping with my 2 sons’ Boy Scout Troop In SE Michigan.
Yesterday’s wake up temp was 22’ with a wind chill of 10’.
This morning wake up temp was 27’, no wind.

With tent camping...I"ve. ALWAYS used a tarp cover too shield my tent .. just in case of a heavy down pour.

It being a well maintained trail and trail markers being seen on trees it is obviously a public trail. I get keeping your bushwhacked camp site a secret but let us NC folks know of a place we might not have been to so we can enjoy it.

I too think you may have heard a bigfoot. The next morning I would have investigsted the area where I heard the noise and looked for footprints. Beautiful country we live in. Thanks for showing us a little piece of it.
