Good video Luke....I'm 71 years old and I have been doing the type of outdoor activity that you are doing all my life. I grew up at the Peaks of Otter in Virginia and outside camping is second nature. Keep on camping.... I enjoy your outings. Glad to see you keeping on this tradition.

I LOVE winter camping! Iprefer colder weather than hot weather when camping. Big fires, cozy tent, hot dinners, all the sparkling snow/trees, no bugs 🥳

In the army (10 years ago or so) we def weren't allowed to cover our face when it was really cold up north here in Norway, because it had a tendency to cause frostbites on the inside, because of the extra moisture. I can't recall what materials we were using though, and it might have to be below a certain temperature (including wind). Oh man... so many memories coming back to me from that time. Cheers for the video, Luke!

I've worked in the cold and snow for 30+ years, and the best piece of gear I've found to keep my legs dry and warm are gaiters. Nylon is the way to go. The problem is finding them that can wrap around Carrhardt insulated bibbed overalls and not want to break the zipper on them lol....or the snap at the top, which is what Outdoor Research has (OR). Great company and products.
    Someday that will be addressed

Last time I was winter camping was in Boy Scouts. We were all around the fire at midnight or later and I brought out a big chunk of (frozen) chocolate and attempted to cut it up for the boys. My Dad had sharpened my Swiss army knife for me. It went through the frozen chocolate and part of my thumb. After a few stitches at the hospital, the scout leader brought me back and I went to sleep like nothing happened.

If you are interested in Canadian surplus at all and you like cold weather camping the CF 4 piece sleep system is the only cold weather sleeping bag you will ever need. I have used just the inner bag alone down to -2 C and with the full system it is rated to -40. It has been issued since the 70s and the only change since then has been the addition of a gortex bivvy sack. The full kit is 2 down bags that fit inside each other, a liner, the bivvy and an insulated hood that actually pulls down over your face. Not great if you have claustrophobia but it means you can sleep without a tent in -40 degrees. The standard issue DND wool socks and lycra/wool blend sock liners are also good. The Pattern 82 rucksack is a nice piece of kit and for the size of the rucksack it will hold an insane amount of kit but in my own personal experience it works great for some people and for others not so much.

The old CF snowshoes aka tennis rackets are pretty cool too. They are magnesium frame so they are light and you can scrap shavings off them to make a fire in an emergency.

To help clarify the fire question that was asked, around the 29 minute mark, about the best way to start a fire in the snow I would like to add practice, practice, practice. Not trying to step on toes or give the impression that Im a great bushcrafter but at times even using a lighter is tough without paper or fire starter. So before you're stuck in a bad situation practice the skill.
    Merry Christmas Everyone!
And thank you, Luke, for all the great videos throughout the year.

Thanks Luke. New to your vids. Love them all. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I'm a gal from Northwest Ohio. A little bit of a tomboy LOL. I have always loved being outdoors and camping and playing in the ponds and the creeks. I just love everything you put out there. Thank you so much. You are entertaining and respectful. God bless you and yours.
