My dad used to own a 1976 FJ40 model here in the United States. He still tells stories about how tough it was to this day.
My favorite story he told me about it was how one winter when it snowed heavily, a local walmart parking lot had had snowplows go through the day before and pile all the snow from the entire parking lot into a giant mound in the corner of the lot. My dad had just gotten the land cruiser recently, and wanted to show his friends how tough it was. With all his buddies watching, he climbed the entire mound all the way to the top (about 20-30 feet high.) He managed to reach the tip, but then got stuck with the front wheels hanging over the front edge and not touching anything, and the back wheels hanging over the back edge, and not touching anything, sort of like this shape:
    0-------0
    ^
    ^
So then, he and his friends got in their cars and all went to their homes, and got snow shovels. They then drove back to the lot where my dad's land cruiser was still stuck on the snow mound, and they all shoveled the entire mound out from under it over the course of about 3-4 hours, until he could drive off of it.

We've come a long ways in tire innovation and gone completely backwards in terms of building real off road machines. I love my 4Runner but it needs a lot of help to do this kind of offroading compared to a stock Cruiser from 30 years ago.
