Camping in freezing rain - Pushing the limits of gear & comfort
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2024
- In this video I head out wild camping in freezing rain and strong wind. The temperature is highs of 2c but drop overnight to -3c. I love winter camping but on this camp I push the limits of both my gear and comfort. Being soaking wet in freezing temperature is a challenge and my sleep kit was rated right on the limit of the conditions. I hope you enjoy this little outdoor adventure as much as I did.

Thanks for the mention Paul… literally the first ever wild camping video I watched was 1 of yours, so that’s pretty awesome to be featured on a vid.
Great content, as always!
Liam
no probs mate. keep up the great work
as introvert i love watching this either rainy or snow camping, idk why maybe its weird but this makes me feel calm.
🤣🤣 In "bad weather" I used to like reading Rich Hobson's 'Grass beyond the Mountains' series..... 🤣🤣🤣 A LOT of embellishments..... But great stories of B.C. in the '30's (?)..... 🤣🤣🤣👃✌️🇨🇦
It makes you feel cosy and appreciative of having a roof over your head.
What makes you think it has to do with you being an introvert? Just curious :)
@@alexhill6253 interacting with nature, as long as I don't meet humans, I feel less nervous and wasn't drain my energy too much.
You know Paul, when you're using water to heat through a ready made meal, you don't need deep water. As long as you use a lid, an inch or two of water is all you need because the circulating steam will do the heating for you faster, using less precious water, fuel and time. Just don't remove the lid and lose steam and you're good.
That's exactly what I do
I do that two.👍🏾
Great content as always Paul!!!👌🏽
Great tip, thanks
Wait, what? When you use an alcohol stove that is a no-go my friend. Just plan on using the remaining water for other uses such as an after dinner brew or perhaps a dehydrated dessert. Remember that many alcohol stoves have no heat control or off switch. You are committed to tusing hat partial full ounce of fuel once lit. Luxuriate in that extra hot water. I sometimes use my water bottle as a foot warmer. See you on the trail!
Keeping your tent packed while you set up the poles. It’s those little things that keeps me watching videos, especially yours.
Bet it’s lovely when you get in the tent and get warm with a nice brew
Crackin vid Paul. Old school. Nothing better than seeing you suffering the clag for our entertainment. Chees pal! ;)
Inspirational stuff ! Love how ya just get out there, fair play to ya mate.
After 25years spent in arduous conditions with the Marines I never felt the need to wear waterproof trousers. A quick drying trouser was my preference as a waterproof outer was never fully waterproof and just became a burden to carry, also as long as core is kept warm legs never got cold. Great content 👍
What would you recommend now? 20 years ago it was all Ronhills, is there anything new?
@@paulmclaughlin4106 My preference these days is a Fjallraven cotton trouser that can be waxed in winter.
Same here. I'm using the Rab trousers at the moment. Dries in no time. Surprised at the cotton option suggested, but each to their own 😅
Rain Pancho are good to have in wet camping weather they weigh nothin keep you're clothes and backpack dry until you find you're ground to lay you're tent / hammock.
One small caveat: Long legs to torso ration, especially with skinny legs (suitable for running and cycling, not great for swimming) does require a bit of extra, eg long johns.
Also...good bloke outdoors...what a channel. If your not subscribed, make sure you are. Genuine chap, having adventures!
I recently subscribed to his channel, a great guy who makes camping fun, hats off to Liam!!!👍🍻
Thank you I enjoyed your visit. I used to drink bad stuff but now I just drink water and tea. Tea with no sweetener or milk. Took me a little to get use to it but now I wouldn't have it any other way. Stay well my friend.
Thanks for the video. I don't always comment, especially if I'm watching on the tele, but I always enjoy your videos. Authentic, honest and down to earth and the content is relevant for me. Cheers and keep it up.
Showing the Unna at its finest , grim weather , so versatile 💪😅
Watching this on my phone whilst in a scalding hot bath - makes me feel even more relaxed! Great work, love your videos - camping in this weather? Absolute muppet….. hats off to you, thumbs up😅
Ditto!
How appropriate! The ad UA-cam chose to run prior to your windswept face appearing was a tropical beach!!!
2’15”
“I’m gonna get a couple of guys in”
I didn’t know it was a party!
Your a tough old bugger Mr M. as said pure inspirational.
On the night of the 15th Feb i camped near Bath. It was raining when I pitched. The inside of the tent got slightly wet.
Overall an excellent night, as the rain stopped @ 11:45 & after a light wind. I was inspired by your video to have a go & not retreat to a friends place! Thanks Paul.
Sleep system a 3 season bag & fleece liner.
I love that you are pushing yourself when it would be quite easy to take an easier path. The day to day details of your videos, well shot and with your friendly common sense dialogue make these very watchable. Bonkers expensive kit where it matters but then cheap as chips alcohol stove - just shows your pragmatic approach! Thank you as always Paul, keep em coming!
Love watching Liam as well! He is a character....
Glad you didn't freeze your plums off and tea looked yum.
Exellent video, really enjoyed it. Never thought i would get much more enjoyment from u tube than ordinary tv. How things have changed. For the better as so much choice now. Anyway you are a credit to what you do, long may it continue, karl.
The mini pump. One of the best bits of kit for years!
Wayyyy too noisy for moi.... I love the peace and quiet together with the stealth virtues...
@garybenning1972 a pump going for a few minutes won’t upset anyone. If you’re proper stealth there would be no one else around anyway 🤷🏻♂️😉
@@stevebennett6727 it's MY peace I cherish when I'm out.... That's one of my major reasons for going.
Good for starting a fire too !
It alway's amazed me that you guys in Scotland can cook food in your tent without the worry of seing any animals barging inside 😂 . I'm from Canada
It’s that way down here in East Tennessee. Critters…bear, rodents especially, make us consider preparing food a different way. Thanks for sharing.
I think we are very lucky in the UK, the only thing a wild camper really needs to worry about are ticks
@@KristianH1986idk if that makes you lucky lol
@@thisguy7175 how so? Permethrin and you’re good, zero to worry about.
I went camp yesterday evening back tomorrow I'm going to enjoy a home made shepherd pie with a nice Mcewan's bitter, fair play to you Paul out camping in this weather cheers Paul.
Wonderful to see you again, sir!
Hi again Paul. Thanks to your superb honest videos finally bought a Hilleberg Unna.😁 so looking forward to getting out in it. And thanks to those who put their preference on my last post.
Not just animals but big mean ones at times! Northern Ontario here🤪
Good to see your out Paul braving the elements out there ✊🏻
Good to see you test your resilience and kit selection - looks like you had an awesome time!
Loved it Phil. Nice to be back out in testing conditions
Well Paul you can’t beat a stormy camp.⛺️ The noises from the climate machines are endless there isn’t much time pass without hearing or seeing one. Love a frost in the morning 👍
Love your videos Paul. I can't think of many activities I'd rather do less than this sort of thing but admire you greatly for doing so whilst both entertaining and educating the rest of us. Thanks.
Best bit of cold weather kit I have is heated gilet. Good back up. Warms me up quick once set up.
I look forward to seeing the new tent in action it looks bomb proof
You must have been glad to get out of that wind and rain 😢
I can remember being out in that myself !
Big red face on you paul.
What a way to make a living 😮
We call that a take out, in Canada.
Mike.
Paul, you’re an absolute champ going out in weather like this …🤗👍🏻👍🏻 my oh my..😁
Thanks for this great video Paul.
It showcases the Unna for what it is, a tough versatile tent.
Another great video paul, seeing that weather at the start,to that sunrise the next day is a world of diffrence and thats what i love about hiking and wild camping, sometimes it can feel like the elements are against you all the time, then its like nature rewards you, whether that be a sunrise or something else
Good effort, don’t matter what the weather is doing you are always out in it.👍👍👍👍
Beautiful! Thanks Paul! 💚👍👍👍🙏
Perfect description (if not execution) of how to pitch a tent in the Funist of fun weather 😊
Hikers/campers must maintain a positive refrain. 😁
Nice to see out camping again but it looked very wet wet wet and windy main thing long you enjoy the camp stay safe and stay healthy and stay warm one life enjoy blessed be
Paul I really enjoy your videos, coming from Australia I marvel at the horrendous conditions you have for camping - great effort. 😎👍
I Always get excited when I see a new video pop up from this channel, like a big kid I sit downstairs with a blanket over me and a pot noodle as if I'm camping hehe
Come rain or shine, you are out there. Very inspirational, mate.
Looks like a lot of prep work is needed before you go.And a lot of packing away afterwards. Not to mention having to clean and dry everything once you’ve got back home.which involves unpacking it all again.Sounds like a lot of work to me!
Great video as always !!! Thanks!
Brilliant, thanks for that, scorching hot ere in NZ. Really enjoyed watching you coping with the elements. Felt like I was there. Great meal. Liked the way you set your tent up in the wind. I was failing to do a good job many years ago putting our tunnel tent up in the wind on the top of Whitby and a bloke ran over and helped me out, turns out it was noddy holders brother, nice guy.
That morning view was worth the struggle the day before ! Great video Paul
That is nuts!
Cheers Paul, I've got a Coffee Porter from Northwoods Brewing Company in Northwood New Hampshire and a Whirlpool Hazy Pale Ale from Night Shift Brewing in Everett Massachusetts! Mixing it up for a bit of variety! I'm glad you stayed warm!!
Sunrise was a well deserved reward after a rough hike in. Regardless, your videos are very calming Paul!
No Armani, No Punani - I'm only 33 Paul and those fellers still exist in clubs around Liverpool 😂 had me laughing this mate 👍
Worth it for that sunrise! 👍
Great video 😊 here in Norway they describe the comfort rating of a sleeping bag as the temp for women and the limit rating for men. Also, I use wool liner gloves when camping in the cold. They will get soaked but still manage to hold your fingers warm and dry very very quickly even with just body heat.
Thanks for sharing your videos 😊 looks fab up there.
Paul, thanks for sharing. I think you have spent serious effort dialing in your gear and the sequence of making it all work with your video. Well done, Sir. Much respect for your kit. I live in the mountains, where it’s wet and can be windy. Thanks again…from East Tennessee.
I'm learning so much - thanks Paul
Paul what a great vid again covering a few of my unknowns for my first wild camp soon, for instance a simple change of clothes from the hike kit to being in the tent….how it’s done easily. Sorry for the lame question but it’s like anything….if you’ve never done it….savvy takes you so far then sometimes you just have to see it ✌🏻🤘🏻
Need to come down under and trek and camp. Always warm and never rains. Clear skies, bright stars, campfire and a billy on the boil. Always dry!
Great video, back in a Hilleberg, that should be bombproof. Thanks for sharing, inspirational as always 👍🏻👍🏻
I bet it'll be a happy day when you get the DHL tracking message! 😂 Can't wait either! And bet Liam will be well chuffed he got a mention.
still not in the UK. WHERE'S SANTA when you need him
@@PaulMessner 😂
Inspirational stuff
Just bought an extra pole and extra guy ropes for my hilly soulo bl, absolute beast of a tent, i call it the limpet! Great vid once again paul!👍
Respect!
Love the good bloke outdoors …
At the moment I'm in my Astra Gear tent (yes that one) in the New Forest putting my seam sealing to the test. 😅 Will be having a wee port and some scampi frys later 👍 Great stuff as always Paul 😉
Brilliant video Paul 👏👏👏
Excellent video Paul.... Riveting...Loved the content and as always, I learn a lot....
Another good video Paul , Enjoy your new tent when it arrives , I might get in a couple of camps in next couple of weeks , Liam is good to watch , he's a good bloke , Enjoy watching bushman and blue , was a nice sunrise . Keep the videos coming Paul . cheers .
Until next time , Dylan
Lovely weather to be outside. When everybody is hiding in a warm place you are the king of the world.
Harsh 😮 nice to see you treat yourself specially in those conditions 🍻🍻❤from Michigan
Another very enjoyable video Paul. Good on you for getting out in that terrible weather! 👍 I'm very much a fair weather wild camper myself! 😁
Currently out in the hammock in the rain drinking some hazy Jane. Top vid Paul 👍
Myself I’m having a dram of whiskey nice and warming.
Great video Paul
Nice one Mr P. Really liked your menu. A Cuppa Soup is a very fine thing on a cold, lightweight camp. Really like your "supermarket takeaway and added from home ingredients" vacuum boil in the bag thing. For weight saving, have been doing a Cuppa Soup mixed with a 2 minute noodle, with all the sachets for flavour for years. Great for energy but insanely salty, grabbing for my water bottle through the night. Your set up would be way better. One of our spiritual leaders, Patrick Dickinson, did a vid of home cooked meals he put in a dehydrator, vacuum packed, froze etc and then reheated on the hill. This all looks so much better, for so little extra weight. Keep on keeping on!
Living the dream
Your videos are awesome.
Welcome the test on the new tent, interesting designs. The rating is with full clothes on worst case. Might bring a bag or two quilts. Put jacket over you. Good Bloke has some fun good vids, pretty real test. beautiful rize worth it.
Hi Paul, fantastic video again thank you.
Great video Paul, goes down well with a glass of Red😎👍
I AM Appreciative of your 'dedication' more now that I tried to do much less in my backyard with much better weather. ❤❤❤
Nice tricks from losing tent 👍🏻👍🏻
I can still feel the water running down my neck🌧️
Yeuck 😂😂😂
Regarding the beverage question(when you were opening a good beer), i was having an Earl Grey Tea with a little bit of cognac . Cheers to you Paul, LOVE your videos!👌
Good to see you out in that area mate, I'm missing it badly.....I've got some MCL damage and can't get out.....and Im enjoying a whisky right now
Great Video Paul. I’m off to Scotland next week to bag a few Munros. This got me thinking about that. Thank you.
Having a coffee…… cheers Paul
I love watching your videos, so inspirational.
Newky Brown. Used to drink this in Rebels and the Wapentake back in the day!
Hey dude. Great to see you out and about again 👍
I got those rab photon insulated trousers a couple of months ago and they are really warm. Come with its own stuff sack and I couldnt feel an ounce of wind. Under a pair of shell trousers and theyll take you through a harsh winter traverse 💪. Nice to see you again mate, its always worth doing a harsh camp to remind us how good it can be on the otherside lol.
Nice one 💧. A bit wet but nice views in the morning 👌
Hey Paul, great feeling getting in the tent & a brew on when the weather is crap👍 Magic vid once again, please do review the vern 1 once you get a chance !
I've always wondered about getting an Unna. Enjoyed the video. Cheers Paul.
Hi Paul. Dont forget that Vern 1 (new) does not come from factory seam sealed. As it is Sil Nylon tent.
It's a tad soggy lad:) It never gets old the feeling you get when you first crawl into the tent and get away from the driving wind cold and rain, A nice challenging camp :)
Tonight I'm drinking a small nip of Glen Livet purely for medicinal purposes:)
The new tent when it arrives will I think be the best tent you've ever had, the geodesic design is the strongest and thats what you want when camping on the high ground, it will give you peace of mind:)
Paul, have a look at the Hydrapak Seeker water storage bag, and the Hydrapak Flux soft water bottle. The lids on these take the new Hydrapak water filter, which is a much more robust design than the Katadyn one you are using. The Katadyn lid breaks easily and leaks. The lid twists and locks. You can also screw in the filter into the Hydrapak Seeker or flexible bottles. Works much better. Hydrapak make the soft flexible bottle you are using with the Katadyn filter. But it is much lighter construction and does develop pinhole leaks when you least need them.
Awesome stuff. I love it. Also a tad bit jealous. In the new world we have large furry Omnivores that threaten to join your dinner party after you fall asleep. Vestibule cook at your own risk. Keep it up Paul. Your sense of humor and easy manner are so natural.
I’ve had a bear try to push into my vestibule one night. Lesson learned. Fortunately it was a black bear and easily handled.
Very brave youth!
Cheers Paul. Loved watching that. Cant wait to see the new tent. Im already tempted…. But slightly disapointed that the HH is only 3000. I look fwd to hearing your view on it
Hi Paul another great video, drinking a brew Yorkshire tea tonight.
Great video paul
As always paul, love ya videos.. do like that lil pump with light😊
