China vs Japan: The Diaoyu/Senkaku-Islands dispute

  • This video explains the territorial dispute over the Diaoyu or Senkaku Islands between China, Japan and Taiwan. The conflict exists in its current form since the 1970s and has caused worrying incidents involving Chinese, Japanese and Taiwanese militaries and navies, which some have argued could even lead to war.
Due to the political nature of this conflict, conversations over this topic tend to get heated or one-sided. In this video I try to present the facts of the conflict as neutrally as possible. Reaching a better mutual understanding is often the first step towards solving a problem. I hope this video can contribute to that.
    Thanks for watching!

I live in Japan so I find this fascinating as well as Japan’s disputed islands with Korea and Russia. While there is an impasse now as neither side will give up their claim, part of the issue seems to be that the US didn’t care about these when defining “home islands” that Japan could keep control over in 1945.

    • @johnl.7754

      @deadby15 3 роки тому +20

Personally, I am way less interested in the Senkaku/Diaoyu and Takejima/Dodko. When I read both arguments, both seem to have at least SOME points. However, some Kuril Islands are so clearly part of Japan historically and geographically. The treaty of SF says Japan keeps all islands that it didn’t acquire thru invasion/ colonization. Now, if Ainu or Giliyaki formed a new nation and claimed the territory, I’d be very sympathetic, but IMO Russia should have no claim at all.

    • @TomKellyXY
      @TomKellyXY 3 роки тому +12

@@deadby15 The Senkaku/Diaoyu and Takejima/Dodko are worth following not because of the merits of claims by either side but because of the stakes. What may have seemed a minor detail to western powers, could lead to conflict if not resolved. The Kuril Islands (and Ryukyus) were arguably also annexed by invasions. As a New Zealander I'm very aware of indigenous land claims and how often they're overlooked. The issue is what were Japan's borders before this? Japan agreed to relinquish claims to lands gained from wars with China and Russia pre-dating WW2. Borders were not well-defined that long ago. The Japanese territory dispute with Russia is a claim that 4 islands were not part of the Kuril islands and we always part of Ezo/Hokkaido. Museums in Sapporo still depict these are part of Hokkaido prefecture and Japanese citizens are asked not to go there as showing a passport to Russian authorities would be seen a giving legitimacy to Russian claims. However, in all 3 disputes there does not seem to be obvious resolution as it would political suicide for either side to give up their claim without a massive deal in return.

When Americans leave this place, they will create problems in this place. This will help the United States to control or destroy these countries in the future. The Diaoyu Islands is a problem deliberately created by the United States.

In fact, the Diaoyu Islands belong to China. When there was no such country as the United States in the world, the Diaoyu Islands were already the territory of China. At that time, Japan worshipped China and learned from China.

There has been a time during the Cold War when the US asked Chiang to withdraw troops from Kinman and Matsu. But obviously, that never happened. The reason being, if ROC troops withdraw from these two places, ROC would completely lose legitimacy over mainland China. And from the PRC's point of view, having the government that runs Taiwan to have holdings that belong to a Chinese mainland province ties Taiwan to China (as opposed to independence). And that was the consensus during the Cold War.

Currently, the area isn't developed so none are actively claiming the ownership of the oil fields, but it can be another potential source of dispute in the region as the area is now included in the EEZ (naval claim) and ADIZ (sky claim) of all 4 countries along with the US carrier fleet patrolling around here.

In legal terms not necessarily. They need to be able to sustain human habitation, however the Islands lack basic resources such as a fresh water source which are needed for that purpose. Even if people were to set up permanent houses there, they would be entirely reliant on water, food and anything else from elsewhere. That makes it difficult for the Islands to be recognised as actual Islands in International law. However this hasn’t prevented nations from utilising buildings to strengthen their claim, China does so in the South China Sea and South Korea has done so on the Takeshima/Dokdo Islands.

1:16 One China policy is widely acknowledged and respected by the international community and governments. It’s one of the foundations for establishing official diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China(PRC). So yes, the One China policy is supported by your country (the US, Germany, France, the list goes on). The Republic of China(ROC, Taiwan) is not recognized as a country in the UN. And it has no representatives in international organizations (cause it ain’t a nation). Don’t try to make it like PRC is making an ostentatious claim not supported by anyone but herself. And btw, the PRC and ROC are still in a civil war. So don’t be surprised when PRC decided to send troops to Taiwan province when they try to declare independence from China.

Technically, the two sides have been in almost a century-long civil war. Reunification was actively sought after by both sides back in the 80s to 90s. But was eventually suspended due to foreign interests from Japan and the US.

@@shazzatulanam6680 You need to get your facts checked. Taiwan only has 14 official diplomatic relations. Almost all of them are (hate to say this) poor countries that are on Taiwan's money. Taiwan's local regime has been pumping money into countries like Palau to maintain official diplomatic relations.
They even admitted doing it themselves: news.ltn.com.tw/news/politics/breakingnews/1923578
This news article is published by a local newspaper from the Taiwan province. It's in Chinese but you can translate it with translators easily. I'm just going to quote a sentence translated by google translator:
      -- Begin quote --
Officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed this and revealed that Sao Tome and Principe and The main reason for Taiwan's severance of diplomatic ties was that the Holy Kingdom asked our lions for financial aid. After being rejected, they broke off diplomatic relations with me and established diplomatic relations with China instead!
      -- End quote ---
The automated translation is not very clear. The article basically said: The ROC's "MOFA" confirmed that they decided to break diplomatic ties with the Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe after the latter requested a 200 million USD aid from Taiwan. The minister of "MOFA" Dawei Li admitted that the reason behind cutting the relationship was because ROC can no longer sustain the "money diplomacy" relation they had with the aforementioned country.

In September 1972, China and Japan signed a Joint Statement, announcing establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and that Japan recognizes the government of the PRC as the only legitimate government of China, fully understands and respects the Chinese government's position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the PRC, and promises to adhere to the position as prescribed in Article 8 of the Potsdam Proclamation. It’s all about economic zone. The island is just a piece of no life rock but allows Japan to declare a large economic zone to fish. Historically the island was a part of Taiwan’s Pin-Don (屏東縣)county its only 140 miles north east of Taiwan (much far away from Japan) and got colonized by Japan along with Taiwan in 1900. 1943 US, UK, Russia and China signed Cairo Declaration and agreed Taiwan returning to China after WW2 which includes this island by default. However, US transferred the ownership to a private Japanese in 1970 without Taiwan’s consent. Then this Japanese gave the island to Japanese government so Japan can declare economic zone which means Taiwanese fishing boats will enter Japanese territory as soon as the boats leave ports. Protest in Taiwan started in 70s, I remember because I participated. China didn’t get involved till recent year the pro Japan taiwan government stopped claiming the island. Chinese coast guard filled the missing Taiwanese coast guard to protect Chinese and Taiwanese fishing boats in the region against Japanese coast guards and navy. Chinese position is this island a part of Taiwan and Taiwan is a part of China, hence Chinese has the duty to confront Japan and US to protect Chinese sovereignty. Japan did the same thing to another smaller rock east of taiwan, claiming it’s an island and arrests Taiwanese fishing boats. The pathetic Taiwanese government keeps silent on the matter and China is not engaged.

Wrong fact. The island is considered to be part of Yilan County, Taiwan. Pintung is the southernmost county of mainland Taiwan and is perhaps the farthest mainland Taiwan county (aside from the Taiwanese Spratly territories under Kaohsiung County's rule) from the Tiaoyu-Tai/Senkaku island. The only reason that Taiwan has remained relatively cautious is because of Chinese threat and China's potential invasion. Only when Taiwan regains its full statehood can it protests its territorial disputes with one of its closest allies strongly and openly.

Compared to the Germans, Japan's atrocities are rarely talked about just like the soviets in their counter offensive against the German civilians.

The issue of Taiwan independence is not a Chinese issue. It is not a choice between reunification of China and separation from China.
The true color of the issue of Taiwan independence is an unfinished decolonization job.
Why decolonization should be applied to Taiwan? First, Taiwan was a Japanese colony since 1895. Because Japan renounced her territorial sovereignty over Taiwan in 1952 without designating the successor, Taiwan became a former colony with undetermined status.
Second, because the post-war disposition of Taiwan is still undetermined, the Allied Powers’ post-war military occupation arrangement is still effective. In other words, Taiwan is still a territory under Allied Powers’ military occupation.
Finally, according to UNGA Resolution 1514, decolonization should be applied to non- self-governing territories and lands under military occupation is certainly non-self- governing. Hence, decolonization should be applied to Taiwan.
The Allied Powers’ military occupation is an operation of All allied members of the world war 2. The Allied Powers as a whole, is the owner of military occupation rights, and members mentioned on the occupation plan General Order No.1, are the actual executors. They are empowered agents of all members of the Allies.
The ONE CHINA cage cannot and should not cover the Allied Powers’ military occupation entity and Taiwan.
So you may ask, what can I do? Well, if you are a member of legislature in any sovereign state, please spend some time to check related archives and confirm the facts mentioned in this video, stop passing bills or resolutions demanding executive branch to form official diplomatic relation with the ROC regime, stop pushing executive branch to form official diplomatic relation with the ROC regime, and use the facts you have confirmed to ask executive branch, especially the department of foreign affairs, about their position on the status of Taiwan.
Please ask the executive branch, especially the department of foreign affairs, about executive branch’s position on Taiwan’s status based on the San Francisco Peace Treaty. If the answer is not clear, request the executive branch to do research. Then pass resolution to request executive branch to support the entity of the Allied Powers’ military occupation to represent people on Taiwan in international organizations as observer, and request executive branch to demand the UN to put Taiwan on the list of non-self-governing territories.
If you are a nice person, and you really love Taiwan and its people, please check related archives and confirm the facts.
Also, please stop requesting your government to form official diplomatic relation with the ROC regime, but instead, request your government to study the actual situation of Taiwan.
To help Taiwan and its people, please stop calling 🇹🇼this the national flag of Taiwan and stop regarding the ROC regime as the Taiwan government. Because this will only put Taiwan and people on Taiwan into the ONE CHINA cage.

De-colonization by Western Allied Powers, first of all, due to their intentional colonialistic action over Taiwan as a territory renounced by Japan which status is still unsettled. It should have been returned to China has it was promised in the Postdam and Cairo declarations, and if it was not done so was because the communists (PRC) had already taken control of most of China except Taiawn. Thus, as a measure to keep control of Taiwan as a tool to counter communism in China, they decided to ignore their previous promises and, instead, exert once again their imperialist domination to play with Chinese territory. We might not forget that at this time the Western Allied Powers were all imperialist, with plenty of colonies all around the world. The San Francisco Peace Treaty was aberrant and legally dubious since it did not count with a very important state entity directly affected by the renounce of Japanese territory: China, who was also an Allied Power, by the way. Neither ROC nor PRC were invited to the treaty and decisions that directly affected them were taken without counting with their voice. That is not the way peace treaties are supposed to work under international law. But it did not matter because, anyway, it was the US who dictated when international law was necessary and when not. To begin with, had the SF treaty or the Taiwan treaty of 1952 specified that Japan ceded back Taiwan to ROC, then PRC would have had a legal right to militarily conquer Taiwan, as it would be a part of China's sovereignty territory. To avoid that, they decided to leave it undecided, an imperialist trick for selfish interest that brouth us to the problem we have today in Taiwan. Advocating for the self-determination of Taiwan as you ask is very loable, but unfortunately actions of self-determination only take place in two ways: through war or through consensus with the parent state, which if the status of Taiwan had not been tampered with by Allied Powers in 1952, would be PRC.

@@youtubedeletedmyaccountlma2263 In China we do not follow the pronunciation but the shape of the character to define things, the pronunciation of the same character has always changed but the shape remains the same (at least since 220 B.C.)

@@youtubedeletedmyaccountlma2263 The difference between Mandarin and Cantonese is somehow feels like the difference between British English and Australian English, rather than the difference between English and French. idk if you could understand what I am trying to say.

Broccoli no dude. At least you understand both Australian English and British English. Cantonese has bunch of words that are not used in mandarin. And has 7 tones compared to Mandarin four tones. Hokkien has 8 tones and has K ending word.
It is more like French vs English if you compare Cantonese with Mandarin. Mandarin only speaker can't understand anything when talking with Cantonese speaker.
Just go learn Cantonese or Hokkien. Hokkien is sort of too hard for me ngl.

Quite biased against China but better than most Western productions.
    1. Taiwan was never de facto independent from China in 1945. In 1945 China took back Taiwan from Japan. If you mean the separate rule of Taiwan and mainland China, that happened in 1949/1950. If you mean when Taiwanese started seeking independence from China then it was the 1990s.
    2. Allied agreements on Japan prior to the end of WWII and leading up to the founding of the United Nations limited Japan's legal territory to only the 4 home islands and by this international law/precedent Japan never had any legal claims to Okinawa/Ryukyu, which was placed under UN/US administration, which the US handed over control to Japan later. Rather Okinawa/Ryukyu under which the Diaoyu/Senkaku falls under is a semi-autonomous kingdom administered by Japan seeking independence.
