- The waters between Iran and the Arabian peninsula are among the most important and valuable waterways in the world. And for decades now, Iran and the Arab Gulf States (mainly Saudi-Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates) have struggled to obtain dominance in the region.
The dispute not only revolves around the material and strategic value of the waters, but also its name itself: Is it the Persian Gulf, or the Arabian Gulf? This question has become a heated discussion in the region, with many Arab states favouring the term ‘Arabian Gulf’ while Iran, and most of the rest of the world, consider the term ‘Persian Gulf’ as the correct one.
In this video, we take a look at this strange naming conflict, its history and origins, as well its contemporary political implications.

How do you make those maps?
The 1500s is _not_ when Iranic empires came to power, that happened in the 830s when the Buyids came to power followed by successive Iranic and Turkic dynasties thereafter up until WW1. There were several dozens of Muslim Iranic dynasties that ruled before 1500. Some dynasties that came to rule adjacent to the Gulf are the Saffarids (800s to 900s), the Banu Ilyas (900s), the Ghaznavids (900s to 1100s), the Ghurids (1200s), the Muzaffarids (1300s), the Injuids (1300s), etc.
The Abbasid Caliphate _de facto_ lost power in the 9th century and only existed on paper, losing power to Iranic dynasties in the east, and to Amazigh (Berber) dynasties in the west. The Turkic Tulunids ruled Egypt in the 800s, followed by the Turkic Ikhshidids in the 900s, followed by the Arab Fatimids, followed by the Iranic Ayyubids in 1100s. The Turkic Seljuks conquered West Asia in the 1000s, followed by successive Iranic and Turkic dynasties, all of which utilized Persian in some capacity.
Northwest Africa (Maghreb) was ruled by Amazigh dynasties from the late 800s to 1500s/1600s when Arabs came to power, then a century or two later the French began colonization, with Arabization and Francization occurring roughly the same time. A large part of the spread of Arab language/identity was because it was juxtapositioned against the French, and Amazigh ended up being swept to the side. The reason Arab language came to dominate the Levant, South Iraq and Egypt is because the capitals of the Umayyads (Damascus), Abbasids (Baghdad) and Fatimids (Cairo) were located there. Arabization has nothing to do with the Islamic conquests by the Rashidun Caliphate, which is why Iran and Khorasan remain Iranic speaking.
In summary: Arab rule largely ended in West Asia and Khorasan in the 800s before returning by the 1900s in Semitic West Asia; in Egypt the Arab rule reigned between the 600s to mid 800s, then late 900s to 1100s before returning in the 1900s; in the Maghreb the Arab rule reigned between the 700s to 800s before returning in the 1500s/1600s.
In some old European maps Arabian Gulf is written over what is now known as the Red Sea.
All the people who live in the east and west banks of the gulf r ARABS, so it is Arab gulf.

From a scientific and historical point of view, it has been called the Persian Gulf since Alexander the Great". He said that it was "without foundation" to claim the Romans named it "Arabian Gulf". In an interview with Al Wasat, Bahraini writer Hussain al-Baharna said one of the reasons for the dispute over naming the "Arabian Gulf as the Persian Gulf" is that the Red Sea was referred to as at the time of negotiations over the ownership of Bahrain "Ann That Arabian Gulf", and it was not then possible to call what had since become the Arab Gulf region by the name "Arabian Gulf", it was called the "Persian Gulf" at that time.[34] In recent decades, prominent scholars and political and religious leaders, including Professor Abdelhadi Tazi, Ahmad al-Saraf, Abdelilah Benkirane (Prime Minister of Morocco from 2011 to 2017), Abdul Monem Saeed, Abdul Khaliq al-Janabi, Qaradawi, and Gen. Majdi Omar, Former First Deputy of the Egyptian National Defense Council have supported the use of "Persian Gulf" and believe there is a lack of justification for changing the name.

Persian Gulf. I might not be very happy about ancient Persians (notably the Sassanids) occupying Armenia (along with Rome quite often), but it’s just how it should be named. It was named by Persians, the UN has made their stance clear, and no name change is official yet.
All those who inhabit coast of this gulf are Arabs...there are no Persian people in this gulf ... why you want name this gulf for another people !!!

arabs lived around the Arabian Gulf for centuries, southern part of Iran was part of Abu Dhabi in the past and Arabs still live around the Arabian Gulf. Calling it anything else is pure ignorance.

The name persian gulf appears in achaemenids inscriprions as the sea that starts from Pars by Darius the great. So it goes centuries before that .

In some old European maps Arabian Gulf is used for the Red Sea.
unfortunately they dont stop here! they meddle in the affairs, economy and security of the arab states in the region and has policy and decision making abilities in 4 of them that risk the stability of the region!
As a Qatari idc , I call it both, it depends on the context.
The eastern side of the Gulf is also Arab. Iran has occupied the Arab state of Al-Ahwaz with the help of Britain. The Gulf from all sides is Arab, and it will remain an Arab Gulf.
@@Sara-bs9rz Even Iraq, from ancient times was part of Iran. Ctesiphon was the Sassanid capital, now in Iraq. It follows that what you call Al-Ahwaz was Iran for millenia. As for the people of Ahwaz, who were at the immediate receiving end of Saddam's pan Arab aggression, they showed their patriotism for Iran by defending the country.

we actually have two types of arabs in iran. the ones your refering to the mashriqi if im not mistaken actually lived in a province known as arabestan and made up the overwhelming majority there, after a revolt by local shaiks the shah disbanded their region and annexed it into neighboring Khuzestan and since then mass migration of other iranians has occurred due to the oil and gas related jobs available making the arabs for the first time in over one thousand years a minority in that region. We also have arabs known as the khaliji living around Bandar Abbas who speak a dialect close to those in the gulf states.

They were subjugated by the Ottoman Empire and had to resort to getting help from Christian, western powers like Great Britain to even stand up against an empire that was already dying. While Khalid was a phenomenal general, Arabic militaries were famously known for being ineffective and extremely weak after the Abbasids. Not much to brag about here considering Sassanid Persia was already in a worse condition than the Ottoman Empire during WW2.

I've always known it as the 'Persian Gulf', in the news it was always called so whether in my language, or in English. Only in Arabic have I heard the expression 'Arabian Gulf' (Khaleej al-'Arab) I don't mind either way.

The word Arab is pretty hard for English speakers to pronounce correctly, it’s because of Arabic letters not found in English that make Arabic names and words weird in English.

Recently CN who are friends to the both side has got criticism from Iran when the declaration with Arabian countries said that Tunibs problem need to be solved diplomatically(RU has also faced the similar case later)
It always made me wonder why orginally the 1991 US war was called the Persian Gulf war, now is only simply called the Gulf War.
Persian gulf, as its the name it was given initially, unless theres a compelling reason to change it into arabian. Also its stupid to assume just because its called arabian or persian the water belongs to you. That would be the idealistic standpoint.
The realistic one though is: name it after the more powerfull/influencial one

the term arabian gulf could also refer to the red sea and the gulf of aden, just using the arabian peninsula. taking the arab people into it would make many places also fit to be called arabian gulf. but persian/iranian gulf, everybody would know where that is

Red Sea, yes. Gulf of Aden, no. Somalia and Djibouti aren't Arab, only Yemen is.
Most UA-camrs, at least, seem to have no clue that there is no correlation between the "Arab League" and being Arab in either language or ethnicity. It annoys me when they use that AL map on videos and it hurts their credibility. Djibouti, Somalia and Comoros are in the AL despite hardly anyone there even speaking Arabic, whereas Chad isn't in the AL despite half the population there speaking Arabic. There are also over a million nomad Shuwa Arabs and Diffa Arabs in West Africa and Central Africa (excluding Chad). So no correlation.
