Honestly it’s hard, it is no way shape or form easy compared to other unions but also the ports pay the best pay out of all unions, but essentially the union does it lottery style so you have to apply (put your card in) when they open it, it’s almost like open season and they get flooded with applicants (cards) from either family that’s already down there (they actually get a card that they can submit for family and it almost ensures that the family member gets in, that was my situation) if there’s no family down there and you just apply on a whim and get in then you lucked out so big and you don’t even know how big until you actually start working down there, but they usually open it every 10-15 years and the last time they opened it was in 2017 and I was placed 7k on the list out of 35k which is relatively low compared to the last guy BUT, I didn’t hear anything from the ports until 2022, so it took them 5 years to get through 7k people and with that math it’ll probably take 15-20 years before that last guy in the 30ks gets called up, BUT I don’t even have a foot in the door it’s more of a pinky toe because when you first get in you’re title is a “Casual” and essentially casuals are super bottom of the barrel we only get left over work that longshoreman’s don’t pick up which as of now it’s super rare, for me personally I haven’t gotten a job down there in 3-4 months just because work in general is super slow for the past year and a half-ish, when I first got in I was working 7 days a week for about 6 months and it was amazing, those checks were obese, but now it’s super scarce, and there’s other factors too as to why it is but it’s too much to get into on here, but honestly it’s a super fun job I love it but it’s the best and worst job you could have because it’s so unpredictable on how much work there is or isn’t goanna be
