W211 is one of three best-looking E-Class generations (W123, W124, and W211) in my opinion. The W211 E 55 AMG was the game changer for Mercedes-Benz that led to the second "horsepower war" and new golden age for automobiles in early-2000s and continued for a decade or so. (1960s was more or less the first one with American and Australian cars pushing each other to the limit).
For the interior and exterior styling and character, it's the 211 all the way for me. When comparing a more modern car with an older gen like this, objectively there's no surprise the 212 was going to be superior .
Both the E55 and E63 are gorgeous cars and i strongly believe both will age very graciously in the future. I personally love the W211 styling a bit more over the W212 styling and put some W212 parts in my W211 to enhance the car. Best of both worlds 😁
I am blessed to have both also, the E63 is a way different car dynamically, steering feel and a feeling of lightness is only possible on the 212 with its wider front track and 7 speed box. 211 seems heavier, more planted and a little more luxurious to drive. I would not sell either one unless I found a decent SLR 👌🏼
Cant believe you sold your E55, truly an end of an era. You are the go to resource for M113 information and I learned a lot about this generation from your channel. Sorry, but totally disagree with the “quality” statement. W212 is when MB started cheaping out on quality. W211 was the last MB with that “tank” feeling. I have had both.
I couldn’t agree more, the video is flawed anyways. Don’t compare an E55 to a newer E63. If you’re gonna compare it, then do it with a w211 E63. Superchargers suck, even Dodge is getting rid of superchargers that’s should tell you a lot.
Not sure I would say they started "cheaping out". Own a W212 E-Class and it's built like a damn tank. Albeit it has a 5.5l V8 and not a turbo/super-charged V8 it still has a lot of power for a car that heavily built.

Love your videos Meister. I have a W212 M157 (late 2011) which I purchased here in Oz 4 years ago for near the same price as a W211. While I prefer the looks of the W211, the concern was the head bolt issue with the M156. I picked mine up for what thought was a steal at the time with only 56,000km, it had been custom tuned and had the middle mufflers cut out. The sound from the exhaust is simply glorious and puts a smile on my face whenever I light it up. My only complaints are the old tech, that Mercedes don’t update the software _ hence the on line services don’t work and a creak I get from flexing in the panoramic roof that seems to be a problem with the W212. Love your work Meister, keep it up 👏👏.
Damn sad to see but glad to see at the same time how much you got for the e55 congrats! Thanks to you after a 2 year search (and a brief ownership of a miata instead), I finally bought a 2003 cl55 in silver for 11.7k usd with major stuff like the tandem pump and rear valve block already done. 86k miles and I just did the accumulators, 011 intercooler pump, and an o2 sensor and I'll be doing the front valve block orings soon to fix my front passenger side sag overnight. W211 is a Benz ! W212 is a regular looking Sedan. No comparison in exterior looks, styling and stance. I would forgo superior technical advancement and still prefer W211 over W212 plus what is being built in the past 5 years and at present.....
M157 has the most potential since it's turbocharged. However i think the E55 is the most fun once you have modified the whole car, because it can become such a fun package
We have a Merc CLS with the M157 I don't know if this is comparable since I know too little about Mercedes engines but we feel very happy to have this car in our house, We don't know if it will be a classic in the future but still for us is like having a Diamond
Having owned a tonne of Mercedes Benz cars, there was a huge dip in quality during the 90s and 00s when Chrysler was involved, the W210, W211, W202, W203, R170, R171, R230 etc.. etc.. All dropped in quality, around 2008 quality started to improve again by 2012 most cars were significantly better than their predecessors. I've owned: W201, W202, W203, W205, W124 (multiple), W212, C215, R170. And I've driven 50-60 other models over various eras.
You’re the typical “uninformed” Mercedes enthusiast. Chrysler had nothing to do with it, and had no influence on MB in that way. The models of that era had some of the best drivetrains that Mercedes ever produced. The W203, W211 and W220 had some issues early on, but ended up being some of the greatest modern Mercedes. The W204, W212, etc started out with fewer problems, but are cheaper made, “disposable” cars in comparison to the earlier cars. They lack the genuine MB “DNA” that every morel had up until then and it’s extremely obvious when driving them. The W205 is even worse, and is a total embarrassment to MB. It is hardly recognizable as a Mercedes in my opinion. The 4 cylinder engine in the C300 was a total disaster, with a high failure rate. The interiors don’t seem to be holding up well, and they aren’t even that old yet. The M112/M113 engines and OM648 in the W203, W211, etc. are the last truly reliable, well engineered engines they produced. The same goes for the 5 speed transmission used on nearly every model. The W210 and W202 are the ones that signify the drop in quality due to rust, electrical issues, etc. but at least they had great drivetrains. The W203, W211 and W220 brought quality BACK to the lineup, even though the first few model years had some issues. The 2005+ W203 and 2004+ W211 are incredibly reliable cars with most of the bugs worked out by then. They look and are made better than anything that came after them. They also drive better than their successors without the “numb” American/Asian car feel. They can be found all over with incredibly high mileages, often neglected or abused, still running strong. Also in Europe and Africa with galactic mileage counts. That is a testament to their quality.
M156 sounds better and is an AMG designed engine form the ground up with a strong closed deck engine block. M157 is more powerful (and tuneable for even more power). My preference is M156.
You sold the E55, I really enjoy my W213 E63 AMGs wagon, but have kept my E55 K, and my CLK 55, and my C55 AMG wagon, and currently looking for a CLS63 AMG shooting brake, I love my W213, but always return to the older models, they just bring more of a grin, but really miss the 500E for understated look, shocked a few folk in that one, you will get the same now the E55 has gone, folk know what you got.
Funny that since this video the E63 developed a small rattle when going over a bump. I investigated and found the the black trim that goes around the rear dome light was loose and making noise. So I glued the trim snug around the dome light (from the top side) put it back in the car and all is quiet again.
As an W211 55 owner,, and 500 ,, the W211 is a superb car ,, at least in terms of a great look,, ride,, quality in materials and build, one of the overall best engine ever made in Germany,, IMO the M113 is the best V8 ever made in Europe,, not the most powerful,, but utterly solid, etc etc,, very light also, 722.6 is a granite strong transmission, but yes not the fastest,, but keep in mind it was not meant to be a racecar transmission,, just strong and reliable,, In my case i like the E55 exhaust note a lot more vs the W211 63,,,, my E55 sounds like a proper muscle car vs my 500 with E55 muffler and resonator delete,, and i dont get it when owners are doing all these nonsense exhaust mods,, so the car is almost undrivable. I had a W124036,, a glorious car,, but i would never go back,, even the 124036 looks stunning,, i prefer the W211 E55 all day long,, but i drove a W213 E43,, and damn,,, that car is a huge surprise,, plenty of power,, superb seats,, and more sportier vs my E55,, i really like that car
can someone tell me please whats the best height from the ground for front and rear in S211 SPORT (18 inch wheels original fit).Have to switch ring on shock absorber to lower it but still so its not going to scratch the wheel arch.
Ps infotainment aside I find the exterior, and especially the interior styling on the w211 has aged alot better. The up right, blocky interior on the 212 has dated badly and looks less elegant. ( Especially preFL)
The last version of the M119 is probably more bulletproof than an M156. Apart from normal age related stuff they don't suffer from premature cam lobe wear ,and cracked intake manifolds like the later M156s did. The VVTI is very easy to service, and not needed very often. The cam chain guides should be done around 80-125K or when near 20 years, and change the plastic cam oiler tubes to metal ones.
@@ahemgee9542 I think a lot of m119’s have never had the guides or chair serviced, and if they do now, along with routine servicing, there only half way through there life. Incredible, no reports failing, other than substantial damage, assuming regular services
If you are over 1,80 Meters, you should go for the W212. The W211 is for chinese people. In the W212 you can sit with 1,90 Meters on the back-seat. If you need a tiny, narrow car, go for W211. And good luck with the navigation-system in the W211.
The W212 is the most reliable and best E-class As a Nigerian the w212 is the best. You’ll not see it in the mechanic workshop. That includes the DE-35, 55, and 63amg. I used the later Gen of the w211 2008. I’ve never seen the w212 fixed before at my mechanic they’re always in the road.
Sorry but you cannot say W212 feels better build quality and more premium than a W211 that would be a lie, M156 with head bolts rusting, cam lifters, cam adjuster plates etc? And 7 speed was better but also had 3 different control module generations with first 2 being most problematic. Given budget it took to develop W211 platform in general, it was the last big budget (1.7 billion) build after W140 1 Billion euro mark. I have seen aging W212 and all the updated plastic interior will suffer with time a lot more than W211s. Personally if I had a CLK63 with same engine, E63 with same M156 would be redundant, I would have kept E55 or gotten a Biturbo version for more power/acceleration etc.
I said "slightly" better implying that I still think the W211 is good quality. The W212 AMG interior impressed me, that's all that I can say. W211 E63 2007-2009 had the same issues with headbolts as a 2010 E63 w212 and was corrected for 2011 after engine number 60658.
W212 might of had beter yech but its abit "plastic fantastic". I feel like Mercedes didn't want to invest to much time in the W212 series of cars. They just facelifted later cars and kept everything else the same.

M156 sounds better and is an AMG designed engine form the ground up with a strong closed deck engine block. M157 is more powerful (and tuneable for even more power). My preference is M156.
I always have a soft spot for w211 simply because it's appearance in MIB movie
Thanks again
Which version is more reliable?
S55 amg is the one for me!
AMG Meister washes his dishes before putting them in the dish washer for sure
Thank you
Still don’t know which one to purchase
I would love to hear the sound inside the cabin of your 212… mine creaks and squeaks at every bump
Funny that since this video the E63 developed a small rattle when going over a bump. I investigated and found the the black trim that goes around the rear dome light was loose and making noise. So I glued the trim snug around the dome light (from the top side) put it back in the car and all is quiet again.
Even my E200 kompressor W211 is amazing, i would definitely like to buy an e350 or e500 W212 next maybe with a few more options haha
Can you do a video on the cl63 amg 2007 year model
What’s the les pain year to get 550? From 2011 to 2014 thx
W211 ❤
Both beautifull
Maybe get a cls 55k i think they are amazing, such cool cars
What was the odometer reading on your e55 when you sold it
54,316 miles bringatrailer.com/listing/2005-mercedes-benz-e55-amg-sedan-9/
can someone tell me please whats the best height from the ground for front and rear in S211 SPORT (18 inch wheels original fit).Have to switch ring on shock absorber to lower it but still so its not going to scratch the wheel arch.
Ps infotainment aside I find the exterior, and especially the interior styling on the w211 has aged alot better. The up right, blocky interior on the 212 has dated badly and looks less elegant. ( Especially preFL)
Very interesting and informative as always. Incredible you rate the 113k very highly! How about a M119 E60 6 Litres compared to an M156?
M113 is the best engine. I've had two. Bulletproof, no engine issues, 200k+ miles, drives like a beast.
Maybe cls55 or cl55? Ultimate 113k would be clk dtm
I have both
W211 for me.
If you are over 1,80 Meters, you should go for the W212. The W211 is for chinese people. In the W212 you can sit with 1,90 Meters on the back-seat. If you need a tiny, narrow car, go for W211. And good luck with the navigation-system in the W211.
Its e55 for me if I can find one...(I have run into others online looking for a good one)....curious...what did you sell for?
The W212 is the most reliable and best E-class
As a Nigerian the w212 is the best. You’ll not see it in the mechanic workshop. That includes the DE-35, 55, and 63amg.
I used the later Gen of the w211 2008. I’ve never seen the w212 fixed before at my mechanic they’re always in the road.
how would you rate the m113k in term of reliability?
@@ciw8688 i dont know. I’ve never used one. If you’re considering the car with that engine buy the last Gen they’re usually reliable.
@@ciw8688 It is extremely reliable.
Jdm s211 e55 incoming ? :)
For me the W212 facelift is the one that looks better
W211 is a threat to other cars👍
M113 all day no head bolt issues
Never ever seen or heard you talk about the CLK 55 AMG w208

W211 still great dats my daily driver 👴🏾🤣💯🐐
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Or make it best of both and change suspension on your 211 to suit your driving😎
The quality is in the W211
great video but the w210 E50 AMG is better than both of them
kinda disappointed in this video not suprised the 212 was picked because it was “newer” had my e55 for two months and its amazing
cool
M157 is the best hands down i I own all of them
owning a e55 for jus a day now lol. amazing on the highway, definitely could have better handling especially in the front end
Do you still have any updates on reliability?
W211 is the best designed Mercedes I will probably never sell that car
I go for w211
W 211 E63 AMG
W211 is the greatest, no doubt.
211 in my think is better more in history of cars.
3rd w212, 2nd w211, 1st w124 in any big cc. m103/m113 with any big turbo is insane. supercharger fanboys and purests please forgive me
W212 might of had beter yech but its abit "plastic fantastic". I feel like Mercedes didn't want to invest to much time in the W212 series of cars. They just facelifted later cars and kept everything else the same.
