    I've been painting miniatures for over 10 years now and zombies are one of my favorite things to paint, but you sir have just used so much less effort than I could ever even imagine to produce results equal to (if not better than) my own.
    the best tutorial I have ever watched. make more.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  10 років тому +3

      Thank you Andrew. A compliment from a fellow zombie painter means a lot :) I was also surprised by how such an easy method could produce such good results, which is why I felt it was worth sharing. There will be more to come...

      I'm in the same position than andrew willis haha. I used to take 2-3 hours per zombie in the firsts Zombicides. Then I got disgusted because there were too many... I looked again at your tutorial recently, and painted the hole zombies from Black Plague in a shorter amount of time with better results. I just use a 50/50 mix of badab black/agrax earthshade washes from Games instead of Quickshade but the idea is the same. Thanks man, your video gave me the motivation to continue my zombicides :)

    Though Sorastro has always been a wonderfully talented painter, it’s really fascinating to go back to his earliest video in 2020 to see how far both his skills and production value have come. Well done sir!

    I used to paint D&D miniatures as a teen, but I was never able to achieve the level of detail the professionals did. Of course, back then, UA-cam didn't exist so I had to wait 35+ years for your mad skillz to finally motivate me to pick the hobby back up. Even a poorly painted miniature is better than one fresh out of the box. Kudos to you, Sorastro!

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  9 років тому

      Thanks a lot Tim! I also re-entered the hobby as a grown man and I have to say I enjoy it even more now than I did as a kid; I don't know if it's just having more patience, more skill perhaps - I'm not sure, but I'm glad the I never lost the childhood sense of wonder either :)

    • @Timberella3003
      @Timberella3003 9 років тому

      So THIS just happened - I went spelunking through OLD boxes of junk to dig out my old painting supplies and found a box of modeling paint...from 30+ years ago. If I could include a photo, I would. Yep, all dried. My son still has tubes of acrylic paint from his art classes. They are all Liquitex (59mL behemoths) which, from my research, is not a good option for miniatures. Thoughts?

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  9 років тому

      Wow! I'm not a entirely surprised to hear your paints have dried up after 30 years :) regarding the acrylic paints - I've never actually tried painting minis with something like that so can't advise either way I'm afraid. Anyone else?

    • @Timberella3003
      @Timberella3003 9 років тому

      +Sorastro's Surprised that they're dried? No. Surprised that I still have them after all these years? Definitely. Painting While we're at it, do you prefer Army Painter's Quik Shade (used here) or GW's Nuln Oil Wash (used in your Stormtrooper video)?

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  9 років тому

      Nuln Oil is a terrific all-purpose, off-black wash. The Quickshade produces arguably stronger contrast with very smooth transitions from dark to light but is more icky to use (requiring white spirit to clean) and turns everything quite brown-ish. It's also tricky to use with precision but is perfect for batch painting hoards of undead!

    This is absolutely the finest miniature painting video I have seen. I can tell that lots of thought went into the production, and the result is outstanding. I would recommend this video to anyone learning the hobby, and I personally appreciate the simple steps/organization, visual examples (with before and after contrast), helpful tips (including fixing mishaps), and equipment list at the end. Very sophisticated execution. Thank you.

    Thanks I just painted my set and it looks amazing. Must admit moments after applying the quick shade my hopes dropped thinking I totally messed the entire thing up...but after getting rid of the excess and letting them dry, I was flat amazed about the look of the little guys. Amazing! Thanks for the help again!

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  10 років тому +1

      Thanks for sharing your progress! It makes me very happy to hear success stories like this :) It is a bit scary when you first put the Quickshade on and it all looks a bit of a mess, but - like you say - it's after they're dried and matte sprayed that the process really pays off. Grats anyway - enjoy the zombies!

  • @MrCrystalwarrior1
    @MrCrystalwarrior1 7 років тому

    Seriously good tip about the blood mixture, as zombie blood would naturally be de-oxygenated, and therefore dark, almost black, and not bright red like arterial blood.
    Many people make the mistake of overdoing the gore, spoiling the finished effect when they first start painting blood.
    You show the right way to make a realistic look to the blood.
    Again, even your starter videos can show older modelers new tips and techniques than most others.
    All the very best
    Paul :-)

    You hit the right spot with your video because this was exactly what I was lookin for.
    After watching countless painting tutorials, I found that this one really breaks it down to the bases and makes it easy for a beginner to paint their Zombicide miniatures.
    I´d love you to do tutorials on the specific Zombicide minis like the Fatties and the Abomination.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  10 років тому +1

      Thank you - I'm so glad you found the tutorial helpful. I may well do a shorter video on a specific zombie type as you suggest. I actually paint the fatties in exactly the same way as I did the walkers + runner in the tutorial, so I might do an abomination as I like to give them some additional shading. I could also do a survivor or two.

You video has given me the kick in the arse I need to get started. How is this the only video you've ever made? This is extremely well done and informative. I've read a few tutorials on Zombicide speed painting and this is by far the best due to the visualization of the steps. It's hard to believe these were basically speed painted as they look incredible and I'd be proud to table something half as good.

    I've always been a fan of your miniature painting, and this video takes the cake. Very high production value, and fantastic results. Thanks so much for outlining the details of your method, especially how you "refine" your Quickshade application. I've got a can of the stuff, but I've always been afraid of dark/sloppy results.

      Thanks so much for the positive feedback; as a first-time UA-cam-er the encouragement is most welcome. Well I hope you feel more confident about cracking that can open and giving it a go. Just remember it's not until you hit the figure with the matt spray that the results really show themselves. Best of luck!

    I'm a total beginner, and I've already saw this video about 10 or more times because I'm afraid to do wrong with my minis... In Brazil we don't have the Citadel Paints or any Miniature like Zombicide or Warhammer to buy and paint, so it's hard to replace or acquire new minis... Great Videos, looking forward for new ones, maybe with the survivors ^^ Thanks for all the help!

      Don't worry, Bruno; if you don't like the paint-job, you can always strip it down & start again! Still, I recommend you keep your first one the same. That way, you can compare your progress to it over time.

    Trust me, soft tone and strong tone can be slapped on and they do work miracles! I use the bottles though, which come out matt... for some reason using the tins just made it look like I'd gloss varnished my figures.

    • @Nothin2CHere
      @Nothin2CHere 2 роки тому

      While I completely agree, I feel that the tones from the tins go on thick and hence better protect from a bit rougher handling. One of my gaming groups consist of a couple younger players that are not as delicate with the models as most older players would be. For Zombicide, I use the tins, and for D&D models I use either the bottles or GW shades, but these tend to get handled by older gamers. In either case, I matte finish the minis, which helps with that glossy look.

    August 5, 2020----Thanks for the how to video and your figures look outstanding, but think I'll go in a different direction for zombie flesh. Like making them a light grey kind of color, just like a real corpse will look like. Black people will look a little darker, but still a pasty grey/black. I did REALLY like the shadowing you did for the figures.
    Quit modeling 15-20 years ago, but you can't keep a die hard (67 years old now) glue sniffer down. Wondered if people were doing zombie/apocalypse dioramas and was shocked at what I found on UA-cam/Google. Mine are 1/35th scale and learning all sorts of new tricks like converting military figures into civilians. I'll ' have an upper and lower half, with me making silicone molds of them, then after making resin castings of the, I can now mix various parts together to come up with different figures in different styles of clothing along with a lot of different resin heads.

    I've started using Strong Tone, I like it, but can make some mini's look dirty, it works on zombies etc, but not clean mini's, but clean mini's take so long to paint. Strong Tone is great as it gives a great definition between colours and blends in well if you make a mistake and it does make colours pop out quiet well.

    Top job!

    The reason I think Agrax Earthshade works so well is because it's a brown shade. A good advanced technique for shading is to add the opposite color to your base color, which creates a brown. For example, mix green into a red and shade with that. Or mix blue and orange. Etc. Opposite colors contrast each other anyway and when you mix them then shade with that, it' creates a nice effect.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  8 років тому

      +SpectreTheHorseman Hi Spectre! Thanks for the tips! I guess that's why I also like the Strong Tone Quickshade - because it's a nice dark brown :)

    I would really love to see a tutorial about the abomination that can be seen briefly at 0:04!

    I don't use quick shade dipping/brushing or matte varnish myself, as I tend to use ink washes and dry brushing highlights, but there is no doubt this is a fast effective method for adding shade and low lights quickly and effectively on rank and file; thanks for the idea and excellent video. These look awesome even though you have to wait a day. Looks hard but it probably will be easier as I progress. Anyways even if I mess up there's still like about like groups of ten that I can work on.
