Man, this was great. I really appreciate the thorough description of each active track mode, including their pros/cons and on-screen navigation. Thanks so much!
First time view your vid... I mean you did very detail.. I love view more your vid, cuz I had my Air yesterday and I’m very new with it, lol... I lose my Spark at 4th time fly... down to river... sad sad day... but I learn a lesson... thank you Sir and keep up your good work...
You did a great job explaining all active track modes on the Mavic Air. Are you planning on testing active track on the Mavic Air 2 and comparing it with the Mavic Air using the same path and trails used in this video?
Great info, Ron! Just now catching up on vids I've missed just in time for my trip to Colorado. Thank you for the concise and well documented advice! :)
Very helpful, spotlight would be good when people are doing tricks in one spot , going back and forth over an object so that the drone just circles itself and keeps on target
This video was very helpful and probably will give me much greater use of my mavic air since I've never used this feature and I've owned the drone for a year! thank you
Almost responded thinking this was my Skydio 2 video but your asking about the Mavic Air. The answer is 'NO" the Mavic Air (vs 1) won't track something like an RC car or truck. It's tracking is actually quite limited in my opinion. The newer Mavic Air 2 just got announced this week and is suppose to have better tracking but i doubt that will fair much better. Most drones as designed to track people, cars, trucks, etc. Because most follow from a distance something like an RC would just be to small to track. For something like that you might want to consider something like FPV but that's a whole other ball game learning to fly. Hope that helps...
Hi, Very grateful to you for the video. I just bought my mavic air for my Arizona trip, would you please explain more about the "Backward active track" since I would like my face in the pictures and videos? Thank you
Urgent Question: If I'm using the follow me mode on my motorbike and it loses battery, will it go back to the place where it took off or will it stay in place till I come back?
Great job. My interest is downhill skiing. For that application being in front would bet best. Any knowledge of whether this works well? Of course it has to accommodate going downhill. Is the least expensive model that supports this the Mavik 2 zoom?
Hi Scott, it will work tracking you from the front. But you'll need a wide-open area to do it. Won't be able to do it through trails (to narrow). Second issue is most ski resorts do not allow drones on their mountains. But, if your going out-of-bounds...I guess your okay. Open bowl areas you'll be fine...hope that helps.
It just does it's best tracking from behind is all. Profile (side tracking) works great too...Again, you just don't have side sensors so watch those trees.
Looking forward to using my new Mavic Air on whitewater trips. I'm going to use active track running some rapids, and wonder how this will work if I put the remote in a Pelican Box after launching it. Also, Is there an automatic way to get the drone to return to you at a new location (like the end of the rapid)? Great video. Very instructive.
my question is what about setting the height and distance for each of the quick shots. doesnt it give you the option on the screen to set these perameters? No one mentions them in their videos.
In some of the NEWER model drones you have more flexibility with the Quick-Shots. Yes, you can in SOME instances play with the settings/parameters. With something like the older DJI Mavic Air (like in this video), those settings are very limited. If your not aware the newest DJI Mini 3 was just released yesterday (5-10-2022) so you may want to give that a look as well. Lots of new videos popping up on this new drone. Definitely worth a look....
No, there isn't anything you can configure regarding speed and obstacle avoidance. Object avoidance is either ON or OFF. Also, if your in Sports Mode its disabled as well.
The grey/green ball I think your referring (2:12 I refer to it in video) to is identifying the 'SUBJECT' that will be tracked. You can click on that or draw a box around the subject (which I prefer). As far as 'distance' the drone will follow you from you can get an idea of it's following distance at 2:40 in the video but you can adjust 'slightly' with controller. If the drone get's to far away from the sujbect it will often lose it's ability to track.
I have had on several occasions come home to see there was no video do I need to let the active track activate the camera? I think I started activating the camera then enabled active track and it turned off my camera or something
try using active track without the remote by double clicking the button on the back. It works great and will avoid almost anything. don't forget to start the video by showing the drone a square with your fingers.
Thank you. Wasn't sure if this was old news but I think doing these videos still has value. I think people enjoy seeing how others may be using these features. Thanks for saying hi. 😎
I recently started to use the active track modes and I faced a problem. When on spotlight and after selecting the object to track and hit GO. Everything works well but when I moved far to the sides the right stick directions change. I mean, moving to the left side of the object the left changes to back, right to forward, backwards to left and forwards to right and it doesn't change until I get back in front of the object or hit the normal mode button. Anyone with same problem and a solution? Thanks.
Sorry, but no. And, your object avoidance is disabled in 'Sports Mode' as well. For fast tracking you'll really want something like the SKYDIO 2 (if it's available in your country).
@@CarloLuongo If you don't need object avoidance you have 2 options. In this video I'm flying the DJI Mavic Air (original version or vs-1), which can do 42.5mph (68.4kph). The newer DJI Mavic Air 2 does the same speed wise but has some newer features and if your looking on buying a new drone, the Mavic Air 2 is the way I would go right now. It has a feature called 'Active Track 3.0' (newer than the original Active Track on the vs 1 Mavic Air). The Active Track 3.0 will do 8m/s (Trace Mode - Aircraft tracks the subject at a constant distance) and does 19m/s in Sports mode (but no object avoidance). It will also do 'Parallel' tracking (at a constant angle and distance from the side) with a max flight speed of 12ms/. In Sports Mode the max flight speed is 19m/s (but again no obstacle avoidance). Plus, you get OcuSync 2.0 with the newer Mavic Air 2, which is a really stable connection between your controller and the drone. Hope that helps...
No. I didn't Badger Wheel (Waterproofing Kit) my board. I don't typically ride in the rain and usually ride when the trails are dry though I do occasionally hit some muddy areas. Certainly, not a bad idea though (just haven't done it).
Think I did it wrong! Camera followed but the drone didn’t ... hence I’m here, still think I did what you did but no luck making it physically follow. Now watched the rest ... maybe I was in spotlight mode ... will try again 🤦🏻
Great video. Can Spotlight Mode be used in the same way the Parrot Anafi has "Cameraman" mode? In Cameraman, you can fix the camera on an object and control the drone's flight path while the camera stays fixed on the object. This mode makes for some great cinematic shots. See Ethan Mitchell's video on this as a point of reference. ua-cam.com/video/JrlF-L6fubI/v-deo.html Question: Can you please comment on what degree of control you have over the Mavic Air while in Active Track Spotlight?
I'm not to familar with the Parrot Anafi (Cameraman). But with the Mavic Air in Spotlight Mode the remote controller can be used to maneuver the aircraft, but orientation control is disabled. Using the left stick and gimbal dial you can still adjust your subjects framing. Hope that helps clarify.
@@RGMGFitness I think that should do it. If you have the opportunity and can give it a try, an updated video on this would be amazing. The benefit is that you can design you own cinematic shot of a fixed object or person while maintaining visual line of sight of the drone (which is not only required by the rules, but, given the lack of side sensors on the Mavic Air, helps avoid mishaps. Thanks again.
Thank you for the very concise video!

Sure thing...glad it was helpful.
Perfect demonstrated and explained thank you. the fact that it can fly down that trail behind you is so impressive.
Thanks...it's fun must admit.

Great video, just picked up a Mavic Air second hand primarily for filming trail riding on my OneWheel.
Nice! Mavic Air is a great drone....even in 2022! I'm on my 2nd one (lost the first one to the Ocean...totally my fault). :)
I think spotlight mode would work really well at a skatepark over half pipes, bowls in a confined space tracking you doing tricks.
Very informative video and demonstration. I never use active mode before and I feels I am ready after this video. TY.
Nice work. Just out yesterday testing this on a skateboard and wasn't sure what the modes were for. Thanks.

Helpful as I’m trying to use that feature now. Thanks!
Is there a way it tracks the controller? Nice content. Thanks
Now i just need to get more proficient on my Pint so i don't kill myself while holding the Mavic Air controller! Thanks for the easy to follow demo!
Very helpful, spotlight would be good when people are doing tricks in one spot , going back and forth over an object so that the drone just circles itself and keeps on target
Like the comment before mine.Very concise. Excellent tutorial.
Glad you liked it!
great video, simple to understand and to the point
Excellent Video brother! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Try to use the sticks in spotlight mode. This is my favorite mode.
Sounds cool. What is a sample scenario in which you would use this mode? Passing vehicle, etc?
This video was very helpful and probably will give me much greater use of my mavic air since I've never used this feature and I've owned the drone for a year! thank you
This was a very informative video- lots of great info! New Subscriber!
Thank you ... this really helps me as a beginner .. I have one question if using this mode is the camera recording automatically or manually?
I'm pretty sure you will always have to press the record button no matter what mode you are in. Otherwise, it will just be flying.
How do you think this drone would do to track an RC car or truck? What is the max speed in tracking that it has?

RGMG honestly never gets old since those are features that we normally don’t use all the time and it’s good to be reminded.

No...

Can the drone follow you with out having the the controller with you?
Yes, the Mavic Air can track you without the controller in your hands.
Thanx Ron :) I'm a bit late but hope you guys had a great 4th of July.
I had an excellent 4th! Hope you did as well..... :)
I drive 1/5 scale RC trucks. I need a drone able to fallow them. Can this one do that
Yes
Turn on the APAS mode, the tracking will work better and avoid trees or what ever.
3.14 min... sensors didnt work???? Regards
did you badger wheel your XR?
