Devola and Popola are two very interesting characters but because they don't have a consistent characters (seeing as there are several models spread out across time) it's a bit difficult to nail down their characters. My aim with this video was to connect the original Nier with Automata, which I hope I did! I know it isn't as long as some of my previous videos but I didn't find a need to stretch it out more than needed, hopefully that isn't too much of a bummer. Now I'm going to go to bed cause I'm tired as hell. Bye.

In my opinion, robots in Automata are the "social" part of humanity, trying to build communities, maybe failing, but still keep on going with new concepts such as monarchy, religion, etc...
And androids are the "emotional" part of humanity (mourning, regrets, hate, but also love, compassion, etc...)
That's how it feels to me at least.

Correction : The blame lies with the Devola and Popola model in charge if Nier's Region, not particularly the twins in Automata. These two did nothing wrong, but was reprogrammed to feel guilt and was constantly persecuted by other androids.

I always really liked Devola and Popola in Automata. It made me sad to see how things turned out for them, and reading their backstory notes in game reinforced that

Devola and Popola are my favorite characters from this series. They've been burdened with carrying the weight of separate models, and are forced to show compassion to those who wish they basically never existed.

Thanks for this. I knew Devola and Polola's story from Route C Nier automata. I always felt for them. They shouldered the blame for something you couldn't blame them for. There are a lot of times Nier Automata's androids and machine life forms mirror Humanity. Tragically, They don't have anyone to tell them where they verge off into those darker, best kept buried aspects. We're cruel to our children; we makes demands they carry out without question, by leaving them no lee-way. They keep making the same mistakes we do.

Devola & Popola's story is so sad once you finally get their full background and ending. I wonder if A2's final words would have even helped them because of the programmed guilt?
SPOILERS
Project Yorha was started by the Devola and Popola we meet in game (before they were reprogrammed/reset), plus some other androids.
The Yorha Project document has a list of all the steps and at least the first one is what Devola and Popola did.
They also said they were gonna try their best to fix things, it's part of their program to ensure humanity's "survival". Even with a lie, so they don't lose their reason to exist.
Together with their memories the picture is more clear. Still, we don't know who continued the project (other than the Pods) after D&P were reprogrammed.
Now it's time for some speculations: I believe that just like humans left Project Gestalt to the androids, D&P left Project Yorha to the Pods. I'm 99% sure the Pods were created by D&P since they use maso energy for the "skills"
EDIT: We now know that the project was started by an android named Zinnia. Devola and Popola still helped (unknowingly) with the subsequent step but didn't come up with the idea themselves. The whole project was totally automated, similarly to the Patriots of MGS
Does that mean D&P could be the 1 'model' of the androids? like 2 and 9 and the model numbers for 2B and 9S respectively?
No, they were just amongst the first androids created by mankind many thousands of years before Automata. Yorha No1 was the commander of the experimental Yorha during the Pearl Harbor Descent Mission, who died before landing and command passed to No2 (A2)
Ah fair, is that explained in the terminal behind Anemone? Can't remember any 1(A,B,C,D.....S) throughout my gameplay
No the first No1 is mentioned in the Yorha stage play. But right at the beginning of Automata, before taking control of 2B the commander is 1D, another model 1

Yoko Taro said the game has a happy ending. Well, surprisingly, he wasn't quite trolling! Ending E is relatively happy... by Drakengard/NieR standards anyway...
Yes they're dead, if you actually search for the script 5 ending, "Farewell" the VA of 2B will say that Devola and Popola couldn't make it, so they died.
Happy ending while humanity is extinct FOREVER.... And
Machine lifeform still remains....
Without Name Human got extinct thanks to Nier long before the aliens arrived.
Happy ending that makes me sad for like a whole week XD I really wished Popola, Devola, the Commander of the bunker, operator 210 and the machines in Pascal's village would have survived.
It would have been really neat to have an interaction between Emil and Devola and Popola in the game.
Emil never really went into the town so I dint think he had a strong connection to then besides witnessing their mental breakdowns at the end
To think the only thing they are guilty of is failing to stop the player in the 1st game... what an unfair fate :')

Personally I only played through the Automata and don’t have the patience to play the Drakengards or Nier original game, but I am so attracted by the stories behind Automata. thank you for taking the time to explain all of these nier storylines so well. ive only just finished automata and never played the others, automata itself was a tear jerker...but now i feel for all of these characters so much more...
The worst part is that it's not entirely the Nier 1 Devola and Popola models fault, the Original Nier had waited over a thousand years to bring his daughter back and couldn't wait any longer so he stole his daughter's replicant body and didn't count on his own replicant caring about his daughter as much as Original Nier cared about his, leading to Replicant Nier unknowingly destroying the human race to get her back. It's not like Devola and Popola could stop original Nier at that point because if they killed him the entire operation would be pointless and it's not like he would be willing to listen to reason after a thousand years of waiting.

It seemed to me like they were just helping Replicant Nier until he was really ready to kill his own Gestalt... and their help never really made sense to me, it just sounds counterintuitive

Well, either way, my doubt stays the same: I don't understand why Devola and Popola helped Replicant Nier until it was too late for them to stop him, knowing he'd kill Gestalt Nier and ruin the entire project by doing so. Why would they help him then turn against him near the end?
Regarding your comment, sure, the "original" Devola and Popola are guilty of not finding the best way to solve the problems they had been facing for a long time, but did they really have what was needed to fix things anyway? The project, Nier's struggles, all that. Near the end of the game it's implied that things had turned into a mess long ago in ways they couldn't fix even if someone else tried to help.
And even so, there were many Devolas and Popolas, the 2 in Automata are not the same as the other 2 in the previous game, so do the current ones really have to suffer in their stead after all this time has passed? Because it doesn't seem like they're being punished for their own actions (haven't played Automata, can't say much from my perspective), thus it sounds pretty unfair
Something that a lot of people over look is that Devola and Popola were becoming attached to Nier’s Replicant. In fact, before the first battle they ask you to return to the village and during that battle they said they wanted to wait another 100 years. The reason they wanted to wait was to let Nier’s Replicant live his life, die, and then use the blank Replicant to give to the Shadowlord. What they didn’t count on was Nier’s gestalt growing impatient and losing faith in them doing their job. The reason they help Nier’s Replicant get to the castle is because Nier’s gestalt locked them out as well. They were in the same position as Nier’s Replicant was. So they helped him get in, but once he wouldn’t stop on his quest to save his sister/daughter they had to stop him even if they had grown an attachment because they’re first priority was to save humanity even if they grew attached to Nier’s Replicant. It’s really tragic, because Nier’s gestalt set everything in motion. If he hadn’t stolen Yonah Nier’s Replicant would of spent his life trying to help her not be sick until his eventual death…he’d never have had a complete hatred for shadows for stealing Yonah and he wouldn’t have tried to kill the Shadowlord at all.
It makes SO much sense now! I was wondering why Humanity had fallen after Project Geshtalt. So Nier Automata is the result of the Nier D ending! Man Yoko Taro is brilliant in this fashion. He literally comes up with different games based on branching endings of the video games he makes, he's weaving quite a universe for himself.

Basically. Nier waited a thousand years before bringing his daughter back to life. What a poor choice that was. If he would've acted sooner...humanity would've been more prepared for the alien invasion. Now look at where we are...2B is dead, 9S went crazy, humanity is extinct, wow. It all falls into Nier's poor choices. Yet, it also falls on the humanity too. We created some pretty messed up things. Crazy. Confusing. Yet it all comes together into one big story......amazing.

I felt so f*cking bad at that last line from them. Utterly preferred the "left to interpretation" message rather than seeing them legit dead out there. I don't know what I'd've done if they died. I grew to like them so much :'(

Though in regards to the twins fate once you enter the tower, I noticed that if I came back out neither of them are moving. I know they are androids lol they don't need to breathe. But still this felt as if they both passed away when you are in the elevator.

Anythinf thay happens to the other will br reported and thus reactive to the other. Idk its a very human reaction tbh. Im a twin and i lost my other twin a fewyears ago. It hasnt been really intrusive to my mental status until recently. The empty spot the spot that made you "unique" to the others anywaayds yea i hope theyvhave more dlc exploring more nier connections

RoboBadger Don't forget about the aliens. My friend had a theory that because the androids are made from machine cores which in turn holds all of humanities activites, history, ideologies, and so on, he believes the androids models designed for the YoRHa Project are sex robots.
I laughed at such idea until I kept playing, looking at 2Bs sexy fine round ass and the way A2 looks omg I wanted to bust a nut, then I compared their faces to sex robots we got now that are being developed in Japan.
A2s face, although fictional can be more comparable to sex robot faces we have now, where as 2B body figure can be also be comparable to sex robots now.
The idea itself is very compelling though there is no evidence in the game that supports that claim. But at the same time there is no evidence not to support that claim, especially for the newer models.
I guess it's up to players to know this one.

Thank you for this video. It really gave the twins a lot more character than I had gathered in my play through of Automata. You're voice is great for your explanation style of videos, though my only tip would be to try to add a bit more of a pause at the end of your sentences, since the end and beginning of your sentences can sound like they're running too closely together. Thanks for your content though.

Them and Caim from DG(depends if you want DG2 to be cannon or not) just could not catch a break... Still a little sad Accord didn't show up, I thought it would have been prefect seeing her sitting where A2 was after the ending with the pods.
Accord is in fact in Automata, but off camera. One merchant talks about her. She can time jump between timelines so is no surprise that she probably has visited hundreds of alternative realities of the DrakeNier universe.
yup, but would have still like to have seen her =P but if Nier continues, she would show up and it would make a bigger impact that way. I mean Its pretty much know she has a lot of influence over the entire universe.

Thanks for sharing that. Having never played the original Nier game, I didn't know their full story. I wish we could have seen more of them, they were a very nice addition to Automata. Maybe bonus sections where we play as them and go on dangerous missions? Would have been cool.
The fact the whole model line was blamed for the actions of few feels very human too, unfortunately.
In my head canon 9S eventually heals with the help of the pods, A2 survives the fall of the tower and the twins survive long enough to be rescued by her ^^
Because what the hell, that was a hard game, I want my happy ending :D

There's only four humans we see in both games. Child NieR, child Yonah (both at the beginning of the game before the timeskip), Emil and his sister Halua (both experimented on but still human, until they got made into weapons). No humans in Automata.

I still don't get why humanity was able to build androids, replicants, and all the other shit, but androids failed to win a war versus some pathetic biomachines.
By the time the Aliens came Humanity was already dead
Add that to the fact the higher up androids privy to project YorHa (as well as the Machine Red Girls) also made sure neither side would gain any advantage to absolutely win out, all for the sake of prolonging the war and giving the androids and machines purpose to exist.
The whole conflict is rigged.
It is programming that you would have a soul. There are less than 10 to the power of 84 quantity soul. A googol is 10 to the power of 100 for close-ISH reference

I took this game back because Nier Father looked like a monster and sounded like a goof. I only recently beat this game.
