Wow man it’s amazing that within 2 days you can learn 40 minutes worth of complicated material and be able to play it in front of a huge crowd. You are ridiculously talented and disciplined.
How the fuck is it even possible to learn a 40 minute Periphery set in two days. That's a serious gift... and your balls must be huge... Nicely done. You're so right about P3 being intuitive. The first groove in Lune doesn't feel like I'm playing in 7's. It's got a feel of it's own that's really satisfying.
It's interesting that you say that, because I've personally found Reptile to be one of Periphery's less difficult songs to learn on drums. Its by no means easy, but the patterns all came to me pretty quickly.
My band got to play Knotfest too, and we had the chance to watch your performance from the side of the stage (actually I'm one of the dudes on the back of the video, haha). You killed it, man! Respect!
Just goes to show how versatile JP is. Going from what ue usually plays to stepping up to Matt's plate and knocking it out of the ball park! Good shit man!
“I didn’t know this song was in the set list” man I felt that one... played a couple gigs where during soundcheck I’m handed the set list and I’m like???? we’re doing this song???? shit
@@andy_182 I play so many different songs with different people that it can totally happen. Even with my own band. If I haven't worked on a song for a while, it might not be in great shape. I don't make the setlists and they change from time to time.
I don't envy you but am incredibly impressed. As someone who's been to see Periphery a couple times, and a drummer, I've seen the shoes you had to fill. You filled them excellently
The crazy part for me (and this is what's beautiful about music) is that JP NAILS it but you can still tell the difference between him and Matt. It proves the point that music is so much more than notes and rhythms. It's about feel. They both have a feel and you can hear the difference.
You only have a couple of days to memorize and study these songs and I'm like listening to periphery for 5-6 yrs and yet i can't play a single song lol.
I've been asked to fill in for a band on drums on a way simpler scale, and even that was stressful. This guy is a machine to be able to actually work those parts out in like 2 days and even play them properly by the end, then still get on a stage and play them as tightly as he did. This is actually really inspiring.
This is just still one of the most insane musical achievements! The way the singer jumped up on that last song, he was saying how impressed he was with the comfort of the drums..just phenomenal!! Thanks for sharing this!!
This video is exactly what I needed right now. I’ve been struggling with a song for the past week or two, or rather the six last bars. At first it seemed easy enough, but as I started to listen closely and had it explained to me, I realized this isn’t in my usual repertoire. So for the first time in my drumming life, I had to write notes for the parts. At first they seemed impossible to get correct, but now they’re complete. To get to my point; this video made me feel like I really can accomplish this task. Seeing you learn all the songs was truly inspirational!
Its so so so so hard to recall info when you have thousands of people looking at you. Especially after learning it in a handful of days! PROPS PROPS PROPS. Dude, mad respect, regardless of the double bass flubbs. Big balls indeed.
Great video. I play with multiple bands and do subs, and as such, have lots of regular material to maintain and new material to tackle on a regular basis. Its great to know that full-on and well educated pros still have to put the work in and struggle like the rest of us. I think sometimes we lose sight of the fact that those we perceive as 'the masters' are still human, so thanks for walking us through that experience and your process as well. Killer job btw, and way to be humble, brotha. True class act!
Man ¡ im a super fan of periphery . I saw you live in México and you are an AMAZING drummer , the way you play those songs gave me goosebumps , all was perfect and spot on . now you have a new fan ...
21:47 - Exactly! There have been a couple of times when I've been asked to learn a cover or something a day before, listened to it and gone "nuh, uh, fuck that, I can't learn that it's far too technical" and then after the anxiety's gone away and I settle to learn it, I realize it seemed a lot easier than my ear told me.
My two favorite vlogs were def generation axe and this Periphery vlog. Animals as leaders and periphery being my two favorite bands it’s awesome how he documents this and shares it with the world and shows just how much work it takes to be a professional drummer no matter what it is. Clinician, studio session, in a band writing and composing, or filling in. Jp is a top notch player and just an all around cool ass dude.
recently had to learn a 45 minute set of prog metal for an artist i'm filling in for this summer...took me about 4 weeks to get everything down sufficiently well. Doing this for periphery within like 3 days is absolutely mental, what a guy
i've never seen your videos or even know who you are...but im only 5 minutes into your video and i have this thought of....dude..you're filling big shoes (which we can tell by your reaction to being asked to fill them you understand too)....and you're not only taking on the opportunity/risk...but you're documenting it and fucking KILLING IT. i love it!
honestly, I don't know who you are (yet) but after about 1 min of this video I've decided to subscribe cause this is my jam! drums, helping friends, learning how to memorize efficiently. so sick! keep it up
thanks for sharing this experience! Just caught a Sweetwater vid with Matt and Nick D'Virgilio sitting down and he mention this happened so I came here to check the video. You're ridiculously skilled man your approach to the instrument is much appreciated, been watching since the Git Center win. ✌🏻
Congrats JP. Your humility, appreciation for others' talents and helping a friend in need is quite admirable. I am also impressed at your ability to learn an entire set list in such a short time. You my friend are a true class act and a great role model for those that aspire to be musicians. All the best, Alex
Insane how you learned that set that quickly. That's my biggest weakness: memorization. Anyways, loved that you recorded all of this, crazy inspirational. Thanks and cheers!
Dude, you freaking nailed it. For that level of preparation in that short of time, then to pull that performance? I know I'm 6 years late, but well done sir 🤘
Thank you so much for making this man. You've been such a huge inspiration for me for such a long time, not only as a player, but also as a simply great person. Love to see you go out of your comfort zone on this one! Thanks for everything.
This is a great vlog for drummers. You are a humble dude and it's so cool to see how you work through those songs and nail them live! Sounded great, keep it up.

yeah he is actually killing it, but compared to matt allmost every drummer sounds a bit sloppy.
One of the most insane display of professionalism I’ve witnessed in drumming
Watch his Generation X Vlog. JP is INSANE!
seriously. this is first video I've watched ever that made me realize just how "not at this level" i am, and i've been playing for 25 years.
Agreed 100%
@@pwntimejamboree8272 Gotta start only practicing stuff you can't play! None of the stuff you can.

He did the same thing when he subbed for Gartska on the Steve Vai tour -- learned five sets including Animals as Leaders lol. insanity.

Tesla Nick probably because he's also a fan of Periphery.
It's unfair to call that a gift, that's all from hard worm and effort :)

thats what she said lol :D
gotta love the hard worm
learning that setlist in 2 days is beyond impressive. amazing work dude!
Very inspiring man. The difference between learning and memorizing is spot on. Thanks for sharing.
...Kids, this is why you practice your fucking instrument.
Good job, dude!
Man, learning that many Periphery tracks in that short a timeframe is next level pressure. You killed it man, massive respect.
Imagine if this happened for the P4 Tour and had to learn REPTILE? That would be rough lol
That shit could hit harder than my dad
It's interesting that you say that, because I've personally found Reptile to be one of Periphery's less difficult songs to learn on drums. Its by no means easy, but the patterns all came to me pretty quickly.
@@djentrification1631 reptile was the first Periphery song I learned on drums. I think I overplay some parts too
Reptile’s actually not suuuuper difficult to play, it’s just the arrangement and its length haha

1. You're dense and that just went over your head.
