The song icarus lives and make total destroy is what actually got me into this progressive metal movement now coined "djent" as a whole!!! They will always be my favorite band cause they showed me such an addictive genre of metal that just seems to flow with the the process of my anxiety ridden mind! It can be quite washed out but every now again theres gems that shine bright and that gem isnt in my periphery cause that gem is periphery
The songs “Jetpacks was Yes” and “Icarus Lives” initially I loved. But when I first listened to P2, that album made me a lifer. I had NEVER listened to anything like it before.
Man, this tour was a real bummer. They just don't have the same presence without Mark. Plus, I was really stoked for Covet since they are from the same crew of musicians I used to play with out here in the Bay.

@@nomadmusicbk2366 Yeah Tom had a lot to do with the vocal meodiet and arrangments for the first album, and I just love those vocal lines. So catchy, fit the song amazingly well, but not boring or super predticable. I kinda wish Tom still helped write he vocal medloei becuase I think Spencer's sound like he is signing to a different song haha And Alex was honestly one of the nicest guys I've ever met at a show. Like, genuinely down to earth, no ego, he was just a fan and was telling me to stick around and check out Veil of Maya because they are going to kill it. He was right. That your was crazy looking back.. AAL, Circle of Contempt, Periphery and VoM. Only one of those bands didn't end up becoming a huge success.
Hearing how Misha encouraged Jake when he was feeling burnt out was so wholesome and cool. They have the kind of chemistry that only happens once in a blue moon
I've written nothing since I started listening to them since I haven't been playing guitar and never really was a guitar player, but I'm convinced if I do my writing will be better because of these guys and because of the video game soundtracks I've been listening to over the last few years. My focus has changed completely. It's not about riffs anymore or heaviness
As a guitar nerd band, you guys have really made a great space for a fantastic vocalist. Spencer is my favorite part of the newest album and one of my favorite vocalists bar none.
Wow didn't realise how much drama was behind making Juggernaut. I suppose it's a testament to how good at musicianship and songwriting you all are because I think Omega is an absolute masterpiece.

So what I liked about this documentary is the raw unscripted nature of Jake and Mark's commentary. There wasn't any pre-scripted fluff, it was real and as a Periphery fan i've been lucky enough to experience the growth of this band on the back end for the last decade. The comments about the album development were spot on and quite frankly blew my mind. Like holy shit, you can definitely feel the raw emotion of the group dynamic as the guys have gotten closer over the years. Super talented guys, great music, love Periphery.
It's a silly remark, given most people with truly expensive gear/DAWs can't put shit out and Misha made stuff sound amazing with just a line6 pod2 and cubase an da handful of plugins.
This interview was fantastic. I also love Mark's outlook on "guitar music", as I also believe there are a ton of monster guitar players out there that are literally changing the game as we speak that no one knows about. No matter what mistakes he made, Mark is human at the end of the day and he'll always be my favorite member of Periphery. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Hes recently married and this was NOT a good thing. I'm hoping he works everything out and comes back to the band and i hope he and his wife can make it work.
Funnily enough, Spotify got me into Periphery with Juggernaut: Omega and Stranger Things in particular. For a time, that was that. But then I heard Reptile and that was THE gamechanger. Also binge watched several of Mark's guitar clinics and now I have a personal attachment to the band. Interviews like this one just solidify it!
I’ve always respected periphery. But recently I’ve started really delving into their discography and wow. These guys mean it when they say guitar nerds. This band finally clicked with me. I haven’t looked back since.
I agree with Jake, PII definitely left a mark for me personally . I remember discovering PII in 2014, it fucked music up for me for entire year. PII will always be one of those albums that will change someone on the first listen.
You took the words right out of my mouth about PII. I discovered them through PII as well, and they changed my perspective for how to play the instruments on a totally different musical level. It messed me up for YEARS!
Same, Periphery II was something completely different and hit on another level. Scarlet is still my favorite song of all time. After hearing Periphery II they quickly became my favorite band.
I remember when I was first getting into metalcore I listened to Periphery a couple times and they were never really my thing. Fast forwards to February 2019 and they released Blood Eagle and it blew my mind. Once Hail Stan came out I immediately fell in love with this band and Hail Stan was on repeat for months. After that just going back and listening to their entire catalog of music, I am just blown away by this band. Easily one of my favorite bands of all time now because they've not only just made great music to listen to, but they've also inspired me to keep breaking new ground with the guitar and music in general

I heard Periphery for the first time about 6 years ago. I was listening to Spotify on shuffle and Remain in Doors came on while I was mowing. I had to stop, sit down and just listen. I had picked my guitar up not too long before that after not playing for about 6 years. They revitalized my playing and love of writing music
I love Periphery more than ever with all the recent stuff they've been putting out, but I love the idea that there was that one album, P1, that was pretty much entirely Misha from inception completion. It's like the quintessential Misha album, and its cool to continue bits in pieces of all that in their newer stuff. I still jam P1 very often, it just has this incredible vibe that's hard to put into words, but really opened my mind up to a lot of new music when I was young.
As hard as it sounds like the Juggernaut recording process was I think it produced the best album(s) that Periphery has done. It’s an absolute masterpiece. Unfortunately the best material always seems to come from extremely painful moments.
I hope it doesn't discourage them from doing another concept album because Juggernaut is easily my favorite Periphery album and probably my favorite concept album.
@@CrashDunning I just wrote that. I am hoping so much that they go and make at least one more concept album. I mean juggarnauts story is what I live for when it comes to this kind of music. And it is my favorite album of Periphery.

I wish they would've talked about Clear. That EP is so interesting to me, and I really want to learn about their writing process, collaboration process, and their overall thoughts on the album/EP
I used to be apart of this FB forum for audio engineers and some one had posted a link to this new song that just dropped called “Make Total Destroy”. The production of that song had me so immersed and impressed I was in completely Aw of it. I bought the record eagerly the day it released and listened to all of P2 multiple times. Even to this day I still find myself going back to that album and picking up new things here in there wether it be a audio stand point or a composition one. Truly talented guys here who really shaped not only writing styles but also recording techniques. Can’t thank these guys enough for making something so amazing!
I cant explain how much I have enjoyed this! A story of progression and friendship and uncertainty for things to come! And it had a happy ending even! Or I'd say periphery is just beginning! But yes this got us real nice and close and I appreciate it as a fan! A quick note to jake! I love what you do for the band and to see you be so open to us fans about who you are and how hard moments hurt you but you grow from it is an inspiration to anybody living with anxiety and depression! And oh hi mark! I appreciate how down to earth you are on how you've come to the realization that making a band is not easy and that friendships between band members need to be nurtured in Pajamas with a good video game and stoney weed! But yeah There is not a single song I dont enjoy from periphery and seeing this makes me feel excited for peripheries future!!! It makes me happy to know these 2 individuals struggles as artists though! Love em to death! And I wish nolly the best also! But an absolute joy nonetheless and keep up the good work fellas! I just love how genuine and humble these guys are. Never ever in my life i've loved a band as much as i love Periphery, and i think i love the guys as much as their amazing music. They helped me so much in my life i swear, i couldn't thank them enough for what they've done. Great interview !
Been a fan since the sound click days. I have most of the demos on my phone to this day. I remember going to that Thrash and Burn tour back in 2009. My buddy and I were only there to see Periphery. The best part was hanging out with Misha at the merch table after they played. Such a cool dude.
Likewise, stumbled upon them by accident (searching for something new). This was me, sitting right at almost the most southern point of Africa, Cape Town.
There was no album when I got into periphery. They were still posting demos on a guitar fourm I was on. Misha had a whole collection of demos on soundclick that I would put on my mp3 player. Lol. I wonder if they are still there...
They are still there! I too used to follow Misha when he made music at home and his projects were known as “Bulb”. To this day, those demos still sound great!
@@MisterPerson Maybe someday in the near future we will finally see it on that solo album Misha has spoke of. I still jam that track to this day. It absolutely slams on the 2 12s in my car. That breakdown towards the end has to be one of his heaviest riffs to date.
Ngl the advice about finding music and such is a good one, I'm a clingy type when it comes to bands and I always listen to the same songs so maybe I should try the weekly thing on Spotify, thanks Jake and Mark for the talk!
I need to add, a big reason I got into this band it's because they genuinelly seem to be nice dudes. That plays an important role in whether I check someone's music out or not. I recently listened to Parkway Drive for the first time just because how nice Winston McCall is.
I’m glad someone else loves P3. It’s my least favorite album from them,but I still love it. But sadly for most people,P3 is viewed as their worst album and for some even a bad album.
@@corbinm5237 I personally don't like it that much... I mean, there are like 3 songs that are fire, but the others are very standard songs, to me they add nothing to Periphery's catalogue. I still like listening to that album though, that's not a bad album by any means
Mario Flamigni oh yeah believe me,I understand that criticism and perspective. Even the songs I love on it like Flatline and Prayer Position have moments where I think “I’ve heard these ideas already.” Still,I love it and a lot of the songs are great even if they aren’t that unique,but I understand that perspective too. The most unique song on that album that really “adds something” to their discography is 100% Lune. Up to that point,they hadn’t made such an adventurous,melancholy driven song like that.
Hail Stan is such a perfect embodiment of that idea that while you should try to make your music as good as it can be in your own eyes, you shouldn't take on the mindset that you have to be constantly pushing yourself past your boundaries. That album turned out incredible, absolutely my favorite one yet, and it was *because* they didn't try to overextend themselves. Beauty is a natural outcome of a process focused on personal contentment. The band didn't try to outdo themselves, they just allowed themselves to do what they like to do. And because of it, the album was a perfect representation of all of their musical qualities. Even the album name is a testament to "just do what you want to do." When you put out music trying to outdo yourself, you're going to lose the things that make you yourself in your music. In every moment of this album you could tell who wrote which part, how they got the inspiration for that part based on their past contributions, and what they wanted to express with it. Hail Stan is a goddamn masterpiece *because* it didn't try to be.
I got into them back when they only had one album out. I was a college student at the time and I just wanted to throw something on while I worked on a lab writeup. I was tired of the stuff I had been listening to but I heard of Periphery (somehow) and I threw up P I in a computer lab at Rutgers. It was a little janky for me but there were parts that really shined and I liked it more and more as I listened to it. I listened to them for a while that winter but then I mostly stopped listening to them because they just didn't have enough music out. But I started listening to them again years later by the time they had several albums out and they've been one of my favorite bands ever since. Definitely in my top 5. I listen to this shit all the time.
Same here. I got so tired of the same old stuff and I found a Periphery video on UA-cam and heard a certain riff and thought that I need to dive into this band some more and I found P1 and P3 at a record store and when I put P1 on, it was almost to much to comprehend what was going on. But I had P3 and I listened to that and it was a little more friendly to my ears and I could really understand there sound and what they were trying to do a little better. Then I went back to P1 and now Totla Mad and Racecar are my favorite songs from them.
Been here since Periphery I in 2010. I was into the scene metalcore style at the time and when my friend put on Insomnia, it was unlike anything I had ever heard before. It was responsible for shifting my taste in modern metal towards more technical riffing and composition styles and I've enjoyed every Periphery album since. I was also inspired to start home recording and production because of Misha. I bought the same Line 6 POD HD and I still use it today for home demos. I'm too broke for an Axe-Fx lol.
Periphery III: Select Difficulty They selected EASY. This band never gets boring. You can always find new moments in their music because it's so diverse. At the same time they have some more straight forward songs that are just fun to listen to. The first album i listened to was juggernaut. At that time that was exactly what i was looking for, but it was 2018.
8:33 I always thought this was the case. The version you hear in the album updates on UA-cam c. 2009 sound _very_ different tone wise. If any of the lads are watching this, _please_ for the love of God release them for the 10th anniversary. That would be the best gift ever.
I became a fan on P1 back in 2010, was a guitarist playing in a metal core band in my local scene, and that album really sort of shifted my focus towards more progressive sounding stuff... “Racecar” literally BLEW MY MIND.. that being said, I’m kind of glad you guys struggled so much with juggernaut lol... I can really hear the darkness and the obsession in the album, and I think it was beautifully composed, as a whole
Went to their show with AAL, Veil of Maya, and Circle of Contempt at Thee Parkside in SF, 2010, and actually jump started their van. Funny enough I wasn't there to see them specifically, and I left the show to chat up Navene Koperweis after AAL's set. Bought P1 shortly after and I've been a peripheral ever since. The whole band is a huge influence on my writing and musicianship, and though I have many favorite tracks, Juggernaut is probably my favorite release.
Heard Misha’s stuff when he was solo as bulb mostly on UA-cam though. as soon as P1 came out I was hooked. I loved every single song on that album. I credit The Walk and Icarus Lives for getting me in to prog metal and will be forever greatfull that these guys got together.
An old friend of mine I used to play guitar with showed me Peripherys Scarlet, and that got me interested. Shortly after Periphery 3 dropped and I got home from work, put it on and just sat on my couch listening. Was sold by then and Hail Stan has to be my favorite album ever. Dont know how many times i've listened to it. Periphery 5 now. Damn. Takes it to another level once again.
Fittingly, I found out about Periphery by digging. No one in my personal life recommended them. Instead I came across them online when I decided to do a deep dive to find something comparable to Between the Buried and Me. Periphery II was the first album I listened to and I was hooked. They're among my top 5 favorite bands now. The guitar work may get most of the focus but it was actually Spencer's singing, Nolly's unique bass style, and Matt's drumming that immediately stood out to me. There are plenty of bands with one or two exceptional musicians, especially guitarists in this genre, but not a lot of bands that are such a complete package.
In 2010 one of my musically/guitar inclined friends downloaded Periphery 1 and the Animals As Leaders self-titled album onto my computer. I was hooked by AAL immediately. Periphery was weird to me and at first I thought it was just noise (lol) , but with time I grew to love it. Now Periphery and AAL are my 2 favorite bands. I owe that friend a huge thank you.
I remember seeing icarus lives on kerrang tv back when it came out and being blown away. I'd never heard anything like it, especially those weird tappy bits and strange timings. I immediately went and got the album and attempted to learn it on drums.
Amazing video! I absolutely love learning every facet of this band’s history, process, musicianship and individual personalities. My one minor bummer was the absence of commentary on the Clear EP, I was always very interested in the concept of that recording and wanted to hear their creative process on it. In closing, I absolutely love Periphery with every ounce of my being and they will forever be one of my favorite bands in the entire ready of existence! 🤘
This was awesome to watch, very insightful. Periphery 2 began my love for this band and probably formed/influenced me a lot as a person, it’s a very important album to me. I must agree with them though, Reptile is a masterpiece and probably their greatest piece of work.
Surprising to hear how the vocals are disliked in the first album. I think he absolutely killed it. Some incredible Melodies written even with vocals being more of an afterthought
Literally came across them on MySpace when they had a three song sampler with no vocals. I was lucky to find them so early. Been a huge fan ever since and always see them when they’re in town. Got to meet them when they weren’t big at all, before mark was in the band. Great guys.
periphery I instrumental downloaded off youtube, burned on a disk and played endlessly in my 2000 Corolla while living out of state playing in a band, it was a great sound track for my life at that point. All new materials is still one of my favorite songs ever

Started with PIII and Marigold. Found out a co-worker of mine played guitar too, and I asked what kind of music he played and he showed me periphery. Thought I knew music until then. Periphery has truly changed my outlook on music as a whole. Like Mark said, "You're just looking in the wrong places."
I heard Icarus Lives from P1 in 2011, and didn’t really like what I was hearing too much, mainly because of the vocals. Early 2012, they dropped “Make Total Destroy” from PII as a single, and I thought “HOLY SHIT, I like THIS!” Then the full PII album got released for streaming on the Sumerian channel. I just sat down and listened to the entire album and absolutely loved it. I remember Luck As A Constant and Mile Zero made me tear up. And no band had really made me tear up / cry other than Tool or Between The Buried And Me. And from there, they’ve been one of my favorite bands ever since. Not long after that, I had a newfound appreciation for Icarus Lives and the rest of PI. Currently, PI is my 3rd favorite Periphery album.
yeah me too bro. I remember back than people are talking about periphery and I checked the icarus lives. guess what, I hate it and I forgot about the band. few years later it got me curious that people are still talking about this band and then I give it another chance. it was marigold and prayer position, and my reaction was like "motherfucker, that one of the best mix I've ever heard". that shit sucked me hard into the band and makes me appreciate their older stuff. now here we are, listening the same amazing "reptile" and loving it together
Tool jira shugg I started with P1 and bought all their albums up until now with P4, and I loved every album. I personally loved Icarus Lives, but besides that there were other great and amazing songs. Like Zyglorox, racecar, all new materials, the walk, but that is just imo. A lot of ppl didn't like P1, but I wouldn't have hated them because they were just starting out, and it was their first album. I always had faith they would get better. I was right lol. P2 was epoch, periphery clear was summer fun, periphery JO, and JA was beautiful. P3 was brootal, and P4 was a masterpiece, simply astonishing. Progress makes purrfect.
@@chopst11x92 i just hope their contract isn't valid for too long a time if they want their rights back. It seems (from the contracts i have signed) that music publishing contracts nowadays have an expiration date and at a certain point, the rights can revert back to the artist fully.
Periphery owns all their masters,they have always owned their masters. That was part of the deal they struck with the label since periphery was being self produced
I’m not a Periphery fan, I know about them since forever but never got interested into it. I don’t listen to a lot of this music genre. Still I watched the P4 documentary a week ago, and fell in love with their attitude. Satellites is a great song, and I like P4 a lot. This men are so down the earth in comparison of the talent and the influence they have
In 2010 when P1 dropped, I got handed a copy of the album with no explanation as to what it is from a guitar nerd, all he said was the band is called Periphery. I treated that album like a pregnancy, for 9 months that was the only album I listened to. My reasons being I NEVER heard anything like it before, and everytime I would play the album I would hear something I missed before and I was just enamoured with their sounds. Gawdamn I love this band.

My first concert back in 2012 was in Milan with Dream Theater and happened that Periphery opened to them. I wasn't much into the "screaming" and "growl" singing at the time so I said to myself "yeh they are cool just not my cup of tea…". Then I grow up musically and found on my feedback on FB the "make total destroy" nolly camera video and I said to myself "dude this shit is INSANE" and remembered about when I saw them. It was 2015 and digged PII like I never did. Almost 1 month later Juggernaut came out and I was astonished, and still I am
HeavyHidan same here. Saw DT in London February 2012 and was really blown away seeing the opening act, I had never listened to music with that kind of vocals before (DT was my introduction to metal so I was really new to the genre). I'll never forget when P2 was released that summer, to date, it's still my favorite.
imagine them having all the "Itis's" and "osis's" that come with old age yet still playing hail stan tunes at 60😂. that'll be the day, when u can put the name periphery in the same sentence as "back in my day". my kids will definitely be taught who these guys are, they've changed my life for the better in so many ways. i couldn't be more appreciative
Why did this make it's way to me NOW? I started listening at P2's release and actually lived in the same apartment complex as Jake for a while 😅 I went to the first summer Jam and had great conversations with everyone. I even drove Nolly back to his cabin because Mark and I had seen a black bear with 3 cubs that morning. I don't really listen much anymore but they are such a huge inspiration for me musically.
Bulb is where I learned about Periphery. I remember my high school guitar buddy mentioning Bulb and how nutty he was, so I followed him and what he turned in to. Never stopped, they're still my favorite band to this day.
I first heard Periphery in 2009 when I was searching for videos of Stef Carpenters signature 8 string, the only video I could find was a guy playing a cover of Icarus Lives, specifically the Casey Sabol version, when I first heard it I hated it but something about the groove kept working its way into my head, I must’ve listened to it non stop for like a week once it finally clicked for me. Periphery really opened the door for me in terms of listening to and writing new music. I probably would have found them eventually anyway but I’m so glad I found them in 2009 and got to listen to all the albums as they came out.
Hearing the trouble they went through with Juggernaut makes me sad, because I feel that they'll never approach it again - it's, in my opinion, their best work. In every aspect.
Juggernaut is so coherent, all the little themes intertwined within the songs. It's really next level, they managed to forge all of these negative emotions into sth really special.

I've written nothing since I started listening to them since I haven't been playing guitar and never really was a guitar player, but I'm convinced if I do my writing will be better because of these guys and because of the video game soundtracks I've been listening to over the last few years. My focus has changed completely. It's not about riffs anymore or heaviness
As a guitar nerd band, you guys have really made a great space for a fantastic vocalist. Spencer is my favorite part of the newest album and one of my favorite vocalists bar none.
Wow didn't realise how much drama was behind making Juggernaut. I suppose it's a testament to how good at musicianship and songwriting you all are because I think Omega is an absolute masterpiece.

So what I liked about this documentary is the raw unscripted nature of Jake and Mark's commentary. There wasn't any pre-scripted fluff, it was real and as a Periphery fan i've been lucky enough to experience the growth of this band on the back end for the last decade. The comments about the album development were spot on and quite frankly blew my mind. Like holy shit, you can definitely feel the raw emotion of the group dynamic as the guys have gotten closer over the years. Super talented guys, great music, love Periphery.

This interview was fantastic. I also love Mark's outlook on "guitar music", as I also believe there are a ton of monster guitar players out there that are literally changing the game as we speak that no one knows about. No matter what mistakes he made, Mark is human at the end of the day and he'll always be my favorite member of Periphery. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Funnily enough, Spotify got me into Periphery with Juggernaut: Omega and Stranger Things in particular. For a time, that was that. But then I heard Reptile and that was THE gamechanger. Also binge watched several of Mark's guitar clinics and now I have a personal attachment to the band. Interviews like this one just solidify it!
I’ve always respected periphery. But recently I’ve started really delving into their discography and wow. These guys mean it when they say guitar nerds. This band finally clicked with me. I haven’t looked back since.
I agree with Jake, PII definitely left a mark for me personally . I remember discovering PII in 2014, it fucked music up for me for entire year. PII will always be one of those albums that will change someone on the first listen.
You took the words right out of my mouth about PII. I discovered them through PII as well, and they changed my perspective for how to play the instruments on a totally different musical level. It messed me up for YEARS!
Same, Periphery II was something completely different and hit on another level. Scarlet is still my favorite song of all time. After hearing Periphery II they quickly became my favorite band.

I remember when I was first getting into metalcore I listened to Periphery a couple times and they were never really my thing. Fast forwards to February 2019 and they released Blood Eagle and it blew my mind. Once Hail Stan came out I immediately fell in love with this band and Hail Stan was on repeat for months. After that just going back and listening to their entire catalog of music, I am just blown away by this band. Easily one of my favorite bands of all time now because they've not only just made great music to listen to, but they've also inspired me to keep breaking new ground with the guitar and music in general

I heard Periphery for the first time about 6 years ago. I was listening to Spotify on shuffle and Remain in Doors came on while I was mowing. I had to stop, sit down and just listen. I had picked my guitar up not too long before that after not playing for about 6 years. They revitalized my playing and love of writing music
I love Periphery more than ever with all the recent stuff they've been putting out, but I love the idea that there was that one album, P1, that was pretty much entirely Misha from inception completion. It's like the quintessential Misha album, and its cool to continue bits in pieces of all that in their newer stuff. I still jam P1 very often, it just has this incredible vibe that's hard to put into words, but really opened my mind up to a lot of new music when I was young.
As hard as it sounds like the Juggernaut recording process was I think it produced the best album(s) that Periphery has done. It’s an absolute masterpiece. Unfortunately the best material always seems to come from extremely painful moments.
I hope it doesn't discourage them from doing another concept album because Juggernaut is easily my favorite Periphery album and probably my favorite concept album.

I used to be apart of this FB forum for audio engineers and some one had posted a link to this new song that just dropped called “Make Total Destroy”. The production of that song had me so immersed and impressed I was in completely Aw of it. I bought the record eagerly the day it released and listened to all of P2 multiple times. Even to this day I still find myself going back to that album and picking up new things here in there wether it be a audio stand point or a composition one. Truly talented guys here who really shaped not only writing styles but also recording techniques. Can’t thank these guys enough for making something so amazing!

But yes this got us real nice and close and I appreciate it as a fan! A quick note to jake! I love what you do for the band and to see you be so open to us fans about who you are and how hard moments hurt you but you grow from it is an inspiration to anybody living with anxiety and depression! And oh hi mark! I appreciate how down to earth you are on how you've come to the realization that making a band is not easy and that friendships between band members need to be nurtured in Pajamas with a good video game and stoney weed! But yeah There is not a single song I dont enjoy from periphery and seeing this makes me feel excited for peripheries future!!! It makes me happy to know these 2 individuals struggles as artists though! Love em to death! And I wish nolly the best also! But an absolute joy nonetheless and keep up the good work fellas! Been a fan since the sound click days. I have most of the demos on my phone to this day. I remember going to that Thrash and Burn tour back in 2009. My buddy and I were only there to see Periphery. The best part was hanging out with Misha at the merch table after they played. Such a cool dude.
Likewise, stumbled upon them by accident (searching for something new). This was me, sitting right at almost the most southern point of Africa, Cape Town.
There was no album when I got into periphery. They were still posting demos on a guitar fourm I was on. Misha had a whole collection of demos on soundclick that I would put on my mp3 player. Lol. I wonder if they are still there...
They are still there! I too used to follow Misha when he made music at home and his projects were known as “Bulb”. To this day, those demos still sound great!

P-III. I watched Rick Beato's video about Absolomb, then I got hooked. That album is a masterpiece, P-IV is great, the previous catalog has its gems.
I need to add, a big reason I got into this band it's because they genuinelly seem to be nice dudes. That plays an important role in whether I check someone's music out or not. I recently listened to Parkway Drive for the first time just because how nice Winston McCall is.
I’m glad someone else loves P3. It’s my least favorite album from them,but I still love it. But sadly for most people,P3 is viewed as their worst album and for some even a bad album.

Mario Flamigni oh yeah believe me,I understand that criticism and perspective. Even the songs I love on it like Flatline and Prayer Position have moments where I think “I’ve heard these ideas already.” Still,I love it and a lot of the songs are great even if they aren’t that unique,but I understand that perspective too. The most unique song on that album that really “adds something” to their discography is 100% Lune. Up to that point,they hadn’t made such an adventurous,melancholy driven song like that.
P3 is so fucking underrated
Hail Stan is such a perfect embodiment of that idea that while you should try to make your music as good as it can be in your own eyes, you shouldn't take on the mindset that you have to be constantly pushing yourself past your boundaries. That album turned out incredible, absolutely my favorite one yet, and it was *because* they didn't try to overextend themselves. Beauty is a natural outcome of a process focused on personal contentment. The band didn't try to outdo themselves, they just allowed themselves to do what they like to do. And because of it, the album was a perfect representation of all of their musical qualities. Even the album name is a testament to "just do what you want to do." When you put out music trying to outdo yourself, you're going to lose the things that make you yourself in your music. In every moment of this album you could tell who wrote which part, how they got the inspiration for that part based on their past contributions, and what they wanted to express with it. Hail Stan is a goddamn masterpiece *because* it didn't try to be.

I got into them back when they only had one album out. I was a college student at the time and I just wanted to throw something on while I worked on a lab writeup. I was tired of the stuff I had been listening to but I heard of Periphery (somehow) and I threw up P I in a computer lab at Rutgers. It was a little janky for me but there were parts that really shined and I liked it more and more as I listened to it. I listened to them for a while that winter but then I mostly stopped listening to them because they just didn't have enough music out. But I started listening to them again years later by the time they had several albums out and they've been one of my favorite bands ever since. Definitely in my top 5. I listen to this shit all the time.

I got so tired of the same old stuff and I found a Periphery video on UA-cam and heard a certain riff and thought that I need to dive into this band some more and I found P1 and P3 at a record store and when I put P1 on, it was almost to much to comprehend what was going on. But I had P3 and I listened to that and it was a little more friendly to my ears and I could really understand there sound and what they were trying to do a little better. Then I went back to P1 and now Totla Mad and Racecar are my favorite songs from them.

Been here since Periphery I in 2010. I was into the scene metalcore style at the time and when my friend put on Insomnia, it was unlike anything I had ever heard before. It was responsible for shifting my taste in modern metal towards more technical riffing and composition styles and I've enjoyed every Periphery album since. I was also inspired to start home recording and production because of Misha. I bought the same Line 6 POD HD and I still use it today for home demos. I'm too broke for an Axe-Fx lol.
Periphery III: Select Difficulty
They selected EASY. This band never gets boring. You can always find new moments in their music because it's so diverse. At the same time they have some more straight forward songs that are just fun to listen to. The first album i listened to was juggernaut. At that time that was exactly what i was looking for, but it was 2018.

I became a fan on P1 back in 2010, was a guitarist playing in a metal core band in my local scene, and that album really sort of shifted my focus towards more progressive sounding stuff... “Racecar” literally BLEW MY MIND.. that being said, I’m kind of glad you guys struggled so much with juggernaut lol... I can really hear the darkness and the obsession in the album, and I think it was beautifully composed, as a whole
Went to their show with AAL, Veil of Maya, and Circle of Contempt at Thee Parkside in SF, 2010, and actually jump started their van. Funny enough I wasn't there to see them specifically, and I left the show to chat up Navene Koperweis after AAL's set. Bought P1 shortly after and I've been a peripheral ever since.
The whole band is a huge influence on my writing and musicianship, and though I have many favorite tracks, Juggernaut is probably my favorite release.
Heard Misha’s stuff when he was solo as bulb mostly on UA-cam though. as soon as P1 came out I was hooked. I loved every single song on that album. I credit The Walk and Icarus Lives for getting me in to prog metal and will be forever greatfull that these guys got together.
An old friend of mine I used to play guitar with showed me Peripherys Scarlet, and that got me interested. Shortly after Periphery 3 dropped and I got home from work, put it on and just sat on my couch listening. Was sold by then and Hail Stan has to be my favorite album ever. Dont know how many times i've listened to it. Periphery 5 now. Damn. Takes it to another level once again.

Fittingly, I found out about Periphery by digging. No one in my personal life recommended them. Instead I came across them online when I decided to do a deep dive to find something comparable to Between the Buried and Me. Periphery II was the first album I listened to and I was hooked. They're among my top 5 favorite bands now. The guitar work may get most of the focus but it was actually Spencer's singing, Nolly's unique bass style, and Matt's drumming that immediately stood out to me. There are plenty of bands with one or two exceptional musicians, especially guitarists in this genre, but not a lot of bands that are such a complete package.
In 2010 one of my musically/guitar inclined friends downloaded Periphery 1 and the Animals As Leaders self-titled album onto my computer. I was hooked by AAL immediately. Periphery was weird to me and at first I thought it was just noise (lol) , but with time I grew to love it. Now Periphery and AAL are my 2 favorite bands. I owe that friend a huge thank you.

I remember seeing icarus lives on kerrang tv back when it came out and being blown away. I'd never heard anything like it, especially those weird tappy bits and strange timings. I immediately went and got the album and attempted to learn it on drums.

Amazing video! I absolutely love learning every facet of this band’s history, process, musicianship and individual personalities. My one minor bummer was the absence of commentary on the Clear EP, I was always very interested in the concept of that recording and wanted to hear their creative process on it. In closing, I absolutely love Periphery with every ounce of my being and they will forever be one of my favorite bands in the entire ready of existence! 🤘

This was awesome to watch, very insightful. Periphery 2 began my love for this band and probably formed/influenced me a lot as a person, it’s a very important album to me. I must agree with them though, Reptile is a masterpiece and probably their greatest piece of work.

Literally came across them on MySpace when they had a three song sampler with no vocals. I was lucky to find them so early. Been a huge fan ever since and always see them when they’re in town. Got to meet them when they weren’t big at all, before mark was in the band. Great guys.
I know these guys didn't really like the process of making juggernaut but that still holds up as my favorite album.

Started with PIII and Marigold. Found out a co-worker of mine played guitar too, and I asked what kind of music he played and he showed me periphery. Thought I knew music until then. Periphery has truly changed my outlook on music as a whole. Like Mark said, "You're just looking in the wrong places."

I heard Icarus Lives from P1 in 2011, and didn’t really like what I was hearing too much, mainly because of the vocals. Early 2012, they dropped “Make Total Destroy” from PII as a single, and I thought “HOLY SHIT, I like THIS!” Then the full PII album got released for streaming on the Sumerian channel. I just sat down and listened to the entire album and absolutely loved it. I remember Luck As A Constant and Mile Zero made me tear up. And no band had really made me tear up / cry other than Tool or Between The Buried And Me. And from there, they’ve been one of my favorite bands ever since. Not long after that, I had a newfound appreciation for Icarus Lives and the rest of PI. Currently, PI is my 3rd favorite Periphery album.

I remember back than people are talking about periphery and I checked the icarus lives. guess what, I hate it and I forgot about the band. few years later it got me curious that people are still talking about this band and then I give it another chance. it was marigold and prayer position, and my reaction was like "motherfucker, that one of the best mix I've ever heard". that shit sucked me hard into the band and makes me appreciate their older stuff. now here we are, listening the same amazing "reptile" and loving it together
Tool jira shugg I started with P1 and bought all their albums up until now with P4, and I loved every album. I personally loved Icarus Lives, but besides that there were other great and amazing songs. Like Zyglorox, racecar, all new materials, the walk, but that is just imo. A lot of ppl didn't like P1, but I wouldn't have hated them because they were just starting out, and it was their first album. I always had faith they would get better. I was right lol. P2 was epoch, periphery clear was summer fun, periphery JO, and JA was beautiful. P3 was brootal, and P4 was a masterpiece, simply astonishing. Progress makes purrfect.

Periphery owns all their masters,they have always owned their masters. That was part of the deal they struck with the label since periphery was being self produced
I’m not a Periphery fan, I know about them since forever but never got interested into it. I don’t listen to a lot of this music genre. Still I watched the P4 documentary a week ago, and fell in love with their attitude. Satellites is a great song, and I like P4 a lot. This men are so down the earth in comparison of the talent and the influence they have
In 2010 when P1 dropped, I got handed a copy of the album with no explanation as to what it is from a guitar nerd, all he said was the band is called Periphery. I treated that album like a pregnancy, for 9 months that was the only album I listened to. My reasons being I NEVER heard anything like it before, and everytime I would play the album I would hear something I missed before and I was just enamoured with their sounds. Gawdamn I love this band.

My first concert back in 2012 was in Milan with Dream Theater and happened that Periphery opened to them. I wasn't much into the "screaming" and "growl" singing at the time so I said to myself "yeh they are cool just not my cup of tea…". Then I grow up musically and found on my feedback on FB the "make total destroy" nolly camera video and I said to myself "dude this shit is INSANE" and remembered about when I saw them. It was 2015 and digged PII like I never did. Almost 1 month later Juggernaut came out and I was astonished, and still I am

Saw DT in London February 2012 and was really blown away seeing the opening act, I had never listened to music with that kind of vocals before (DT was my introduction to metal so I was really new to the genre). I'll never forget when P2 was released that summer, to date, it's still my favorite.
imagine them having all the "Itis's" and "osis's" that come with old age yet still playing hail stan tunes at 60😂. that'll be the day, when u can put the name periphery in the same sentence as "back in my day". my kids will definitely be taught who these guys are, they've changed my life for the better in so many ways. i couldn't be more appreciative

Why did this make it's way to me NOW? I started listening at P2's release and actually lived in the same apartment complex as Jake for a while 😅 I went to the first summer Jam and had great conversations with everyone. I even drove Nolly back to his cabin because Mark and I had seen a black bear with 3 cubs that morning. I don't really listen much anymore but they are such a huge inspiration for me musically.

Bulb is where I learned about Periphery. I remember my high school guitar buddy mentioning Bulb and how nutty he was, so I followed him and what he turned in to. Never stopped, they're still my favorite band to this day.
One of the greatest bands to ever exist.
I first heard Periphery in 2009 when I was searching for videos of Stef Carpenters signature 8 string, the only video I could find was a guy playing a cover of Icarus Lives, specifically the Casey Sabol version, when I first heard it I hated it but something about the groove kept working its way into my head, I must’ve listened to it non stop for like a week once it finally clicked for me.
Periphery really opened the door for me in terms of listening to and writing new music. I probably would have found them eventually anyway but I’m so glad I found them in 2009 and got to listen to all the albums as they came out.
Hearing the trouble they went through with Juggernaut makes me sad, because I feel that they'll never approach it again - it's, in my opinion, their best work. In every aspect.
Juggernaut is so coherent, all the little themes intertwined within the songs. It's really next level, they managed to forge all of these negative emotions into sth really special.
Just the thought of Juggernaut has my adrenaline pumping.
