- Today I show you one of my favorite mods. modding the EMG ALX Sets ABQ Boost So you can use it with a switch rather than a push pull pot.
I will show you a detailed tutorial to mod it accordingly. After this Modification you'll be able to use the EMG ALX SET Boost like the ESP MM-04 Boost.
This Mod will not change the sound or how to wire it. It will only get rid of the Push pull pot and adds a switch to it. Thats it, nothing more, nothing less.

I think I have the MM-04 with the HZ pickup on the ESP Edwards Arrowhead model. I like it a lot!

Life changing fact: Push-push pots exist and are waaaay more comfy than push-pulls (fuckn hate to pull btw) but sadly emg don´t got a propietary one
Yes they do exist but from experience and talks with others I can assure that they malfunction and break alot. But probably because playing live means sometimes or all the time I use it rough rather than with care.
But true, push push would do the same trick.

you can hear the overdrive in there and sounds so much like Alexi at the start! i hope someday to get ahold of one, do you know if it's going to be saled in a future? Maybe i'll go get it too late?

nice, ich empfinde den Sound des ABQs dennoch anders als den vom MM04, irgendwie weniger sustain… wenn der Boost deaktiviert ist, gibt der ABQ außerdem weniger Output aus als wäre einfach nur ein normaler Volume Poti dran (ich hab das mal getestet 😅). Das macht der MM04 nicht. Bin gespannt auf deine Comparsion, vielleicht liegt es nur am Poti, Tone Potis schlucken ja auch. Cheers
Nachtrag: Ich habe den ABQ an einer Ec1000 mit H2 in Steg und Brücke. Das Problem ist weder der ABG noch der Push Pull Poti. Der Sound wurde in kurzer Zeit immer merkwürdiger, long Story short, das Toggle war durch. 😀 Seither ist er von meinem MM04s kaum mehr zu unterscheiden (klanglich). Der letzte kleine Unterschied liegt wahrscheinlich eher an der Gitarre.

What about SD blackouts? The signature ESPs came with them for a time. The ultimatemetal bodom gear thread states they were used for blooddrunk. Have you used/tried them yourself and what are they like in comparison to the other combinations? How does a bog standard EMG 81 compare to the ALX/J-50BC?

I had the SD blackouts for years in this particular dean and let me tell you I tried to like them so so hard but I never was satisfied with the sound, tbh those were at the ends pickups i said I would never buy again. I didn't like anything except the looks of them. Weird compression/distortion and kinda too hot, clean sounds sounded like garbage and distortion was never mid range as I wanted it to be. Some people like them, it's probably just not for me.
I have in the first Lee Jackson video of mine a comparison even with the EMG 81. It's very different from the rest. I even used it live but I'm not a big fan of them either. Personally it's just a bit too bright and not hot enough for low gain amps.
You can listen to those comparisons in my "The misunderstood amplifier" video, except for the SD Blackout since i got rid of them years before.
