Initially dismissed this one but once I downloaded the editor from M-Audio's site and saw how insanely, ridiculously programmable and configurable it was (Preset mode, DAW mode, etc)... I was like, insta-buy. The center encoder can work as a CC in Absolute or Relative... pads can be CC, notes, etc.... ridiculously editable. Probably the best controller out of them all, right now. Two huge thumbs, M-Audio.
You can put a after tutch affect on in most Daws either while the device is recording or after on its own automation line. You can manually play around with it to make it sound more natural. You can do the same for velocity also.
As a guitarist/composer/arranger, I was excited to try this. I bought a 32 key version a week ago. However, the firmware 2.1.5, hasn't been updated recently. MPC Drummer isn't my thing, nor is Pro-tools or Ableton or the Akai software on M-audio's site; because, I use Reaper and Audacity a Beatstep Black Edition. I was expecting to use the Analog 4 & 5 sound banks and access killer multi-layer synth patches, Strings, Horn stabs, etc, that work with this 32 key model. I need advice, and recommendations for accessing au gratis sounds for this- without having to use SAVVY HOST to extract & import WAV files into Reaper- instead of using VSTi3s as "effects," or MIDI files, instead of actual WAVs. What suggestions do the Pros out there have?
Great review, thank you. Especially like that you played it! Some of the bigger channels didn't. You can hear the pressure sensitivity in it, which is bigger for me with a deck this size than the after touch. Ordered one a few days ago and getting super hyped for it
Thanks for your review and thoughts- I just ordered one for traveling with my day job so I can keep composing my ideas. What I like about the m-audio line is I just plug it into my iPad or iPhone and go. No extra wires except for the camera adapter
I started taking piano lessons back in the summer and dabbled with teaching myself on and off for years prior to that. I really enjoy taking lessons. I have a 88-key casio keyboard with weighted keys, and I love practicing on it. However, I've been wanting to experiment with making beats. Is it necessary to get one of these midi controllers? I do have a midi connection on my current piano.
The only problem I had with it, is the build quality. My Akai MOK Mini feels like a Bugatti relative to the GMC quality build of the M-audio...I have to agree tho, it's got everything you need and more than you'd expect, but that good build feel, it's not there, maybe that's ok tho! Maybe a mini controller doesn't need to be built like a tank, but I feel like when I throw my Akai in my pack to head out, I don't have to worry about it bumping into something, I hope this one is the same way, just because I don't feel like it's made as well, does not means it isn't! Definitely worth the money no matter what the argument.
I've got 5000 worth of studio equipment havent even really messed with it enough between working full time job and running back in forth between two different places I need to get on it
I am searching for my first keyboard. Learning to play piano and violin. Would like to start playing with writing my own songs and would be great if I could get a 32 note (G3 to B5) keyboard to match my violin. Not sure if that is imp. but seems to be. 25 notes may no be enough in a mini.
Hey Mike, thanks for sharing. How are you? Hope all is well. Does this have auto play capabilities? If not, what other mini midi keyboard should I look at with a preview or auto play button for each respective key? Thanks and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Mike, have you done 6 months after video? I'm thinking about this one or Arturia minilab 3, but without square set up drumpads i'm not sure if it's good.
Hey, I'm looking for some decent midi controller and this ones looks promising, but... do you think it's worth to grab in comparison with something like Novation Launchkey Mini MK3? I have rather small hands and I'm not a pianist, so size of keys isn't that, crucial, I guess.
Thank you for your explanation. I was wondering if it is possible to divide the keyboard in two part, one for playing the chords and the other for playing single notes (in scale mode)
Bro I just need help, I have the Pro Mini and I use ableton live, the only problem is that when I press some keys in mini, it triggered some functions like back to arrangement, play, record. only happened to keys even tho I just put to DAW mode and ableton preset. did I make mistake?
New sub here echoing others requests for an iPad/Pro specific video with this midi keyboard in action. It’s perfect for all of us in iPad production scene… if it plays nice with iPadOS, that is.
Hey John. Just stumbled onto you channel! You got my sub! I'm venturing into programming drums using Get Good Drums into Reaper. Maybe beat making later down the road. Would you recommend this or the Native Instruments M32?
As always a lovely review! Always helping me out in making decisions on midi controllers. Thank you brother 🙏🏾 How does it fear against the native instruments m32 Key bed?
You dont speak about : note-off that are often missing, Real problem here The 4 banks for buttons, fader and knob that actually don't exist, what the hell ? The display and color that don't follow if you use pads as "cc cycle" control (still show wrong values on screen and color still lit as note on/off mode) You can't send note to multiple Channel This is not a finished product, really frustrating because on the paper it is perfect
Snagged it a couple weeks ago. This little board is crazy powerful, easy to learn and everything I need for on the go -- at the kitchen table, at a coffee house, when I travel, etc. Good support for Studio One. And my laptop, the Oxygen mini and my Atom (in case I want to make beats rather than songs) easily fit in one bag. Thanks for the awesome reviews!
I just got mine in yesterday. I'm sending it back. Straight garbage. The pads don't respond. The mod and pitch wheel are straight garbage. The idea was nice. The FL preset, The size and the keys and features are cool, but for those important points not to work, makes it useless, at least for me. Sending it back tomorrow.

have a link to the download? can't seem to find it. CHECK THAT, found it!
How do I download that ?

Would love to have a video on how the M-Audio is mapped to Logic Pro X and also how well it works with iPad Pro.
Yeeeeeees
hey dude, I am hovering over this one or the akai mpk mini mk3. Which one would be better?
Same here, I think m audio is better overall. What have you decided on?

can you please make a video on how to set up with fl studio ? M new and facing a lot problem while setting it up
I would love to see how it behaves with Abelton Live for running backing tracks!!!
Im torn between this and Minilab3. I Like the pitch wheel but Im curious how well the keys do compared to Minilab3.

Yes it has a “chord mode” and a “scale mode”

this one akai mk3? keys the same size or smaller on this
I recently picked this device up. Can I used this with 2 DAW's on the same Mac at the same time? Thanks
I like everything about it except the mini keys. Another short and sweet review, John Mike. Liked and previously subscribed.
Is it good with the volca by korg (video)
Thanks for the great review! Can’t wait to get this baby soon to compliment FL Producer.
Was thinking of getting one myself. Thanks for the review
The thing I haven't seen is an ipad based review of this keyboard and how they integrate with cubasis and other apps

I’d choose this over the launchkey mini…mainly because of the number of keys/control
@@Johnmike I think, I'll give it a try. Thanks.
Does this beat the novation with abelton? I think I'm going with the oxygen
Can you use this with Native instruments?
How does this integrate with the Akai Force?
Don't know shit about music production except that I play a little bass, looks like this is a great start for a noob like me, right?
Yup

Yes

Is this the best one out at the moment anything else worth getting in the last year ?
Mpk mini plus is dope
M-Audio is on top of the midi business.
No Cap
And their new mtrack audio interfaces are great too
It will work good with reaper? Thinking bout get this, but not sure if it will be fine for reaper. Im new in this ;p

Yes
Is there a bank for the pads or do you just get 8?
There are banks.
Does it work with Garageband on ipad/mac? (Keyboard/pads/other controls)
Sorry, I'm just a beginner, I have no idea about other DAWs.
Yes

yes
Great video!! Do you know if oxygen pro works with Mac m1 and big sur? thanks so much!
I advise you to research cz it basically only works with included daws
Yes I’ve used it on my macs running Big Sur
Can you use this without a computer?
No
The spec says they are NOT semi-weighted keys
It’s a toy build and keys doesn’t respond properly, a lot people complain, not compare with Akai MPK mini plus size
Thanks JM, you backed up my impression of this great little board. Will get for Xmas :-)
Does it work with M1 macs?
yes it was plugged up to my M1 iMac in this video
