I can only say my opinion about the oxygen pro here that I had to test it myself. Yes, the features are good and the keybed is aftertouch and semi-weighted. That feels good. But there is big problem which makes it a no go. The velocity of the black keys is a disaster. Compared to the white keys, they have less dynamics and respond too strongly. Even with a light touch, the velocity is higher than the white keys. This unequal behavior of the touch dynamics cannot be compensated with the editor either, which makes it possible to set different curves. The problem still remains. That's why you can't play dynamically with it. With Piano Vst's this is of course important. Unfortunately not a good choice. The semi-weighted keyboard doesn't help either.
Bought it last year seduced by the semi-weighted keys, after plugging it in and testing it a bit i felt really disappointed with velocity curves on black keys, if you come from a piano background (not just classical but used to play with dynamics) you will definitely feel that its not good, its just too much.. while it may have a lot of good features for daws and a nice look its not to play live piano or rhodes, although it works for a non-dependant-velocity instrument like a hammond. If i had to buy it again i would definitely choose an other option.

The MAudio will have velocity curves and you can adjust them to suit your playing style. The pads can also be set as well for touch and response. The keys are semi weighted on the MAudio. It will be nicer to play and after all the keybed itself is what you use the most. Lack of After touch on the Launchkey is bad. It's a no brainer actually. Hello, John. I know you have mentioned it in the video but after some time now with both keyboards, which one would you use for expressive piano playing and even orchestral stuff playing? My main concern with the Keylaunch not being at least semi weighted is that it could affect dynamics like you mentioned. As for the M Audio my main concern is the lack of support and respect for the costumer. Having owned several of their stuff it's been a nightmare to deal with because they often abandon support and don't even reply to costumers, which is a slap in the face. Kind of what Native Instruments is doing with the A series by not allowing us to change the velocity curve so we buy the more expensive S series. I mean velocity curve changing is something keyboards from 20+ years ago already had, hence why i want to get rid of my komplete kontrol A49. What about the faders? Which ones feel better/more premium? I'm so thorn. I like the faders on the left to control dynamics, expression and vibrato but the fader lanes on the M Audio seem so short. I also like the mostly black pads on the M Audio with the little bit of color but the material seems better on the Keylaunch; i also prefer rubber buttons and knobs that clicky buttons. I also don't like those red buttons on the M Audio. They remind me of the red lights on power extensions, blinking like a candle. I wish companies went all out in quality and features even on budget keyboards. Seems like is always something they take back to save some money. Thanks alot.
I'm one of those newb spuds, I bought the mk3 novation 88 cheap as thinking it was a synth ha ha. Where's the power port I thought? Where's the output jack? I got it cheap as seeing as I couldn't test it (2nd hand) figured I'd just use it stand alone right? Use the usb for power and the midi for an output to my pa right? Well after a roller coaster of emotion and research later, I have one of these, now use both a daw and controller for the first time and am happy af I accidentally landed in the world of midi controllers. Already have an arrangement in mind.

After your review i bought the oygen pro, so now i have launchkey 37 mk3 and oyxgen pro 61, the pad of the launchkey are far better ,more responsive and with aftertouch but smaller and there 's no note repeat ( i miss it ), i don't really like the keybed on the lk nor on the op, the keybed on the launchkey feels "hollow" like you said and there's aftertouch on the op but the spring on the launchkey is a bit more tense so i feel more connected to the launchkey so at the end i am more confortable with the launchkey The pitch wheel and modwheel on the launchkey are better too ( there's a kind of lag on pitchbend of oxy pro). It's easier on the oxgen pro to make custom preset , and overall there are more functionnality, but to me when they do have the same functionnality novation is better (pad is better, keybed is a bit better, arpeggiator, is better and scale is better. Also m-audio to release software and firmware update, ;-) they want us to spend our money so i don't think there will be a perfect midi keyboard ;-) i would like a oxyen pro with more tense on the keybed and heavier key, aftertouch on pad and more responsive pad, or a launchkey with note repeat , heavier key and more customisation (ascii on pad for example for shortcut)
I have an oxygen pro 49 but it doesn't work well with cubase. You can assign up to 8 quick controls to those knobs or faders but that's it. Also, if you try to use quick controls you have to switch the daw integration preset to user instead. Sometimes you can tweak some vst parameters with the non-assigned knobs tho

@@barker_ As soon as I connected it to my daw for the first time it worked as M-Audio intended and advertised with cubase. But I assign those faders to the cubase pro 10.5.30 quick controls instead of normal use. Instead of being able to adjust individual channel faders, that is more useful to write automation. I really struggled to assign them to quick controls. This midi keyboard messes up your midi and assigns everything to midi 1 or whatever random values when you try to do something different

which key is heavier? the oxygen pro is classified as semi weighted, so it should be heavier than the launchkey right? i mean in term of heaviness toward a digital piano thing (of course not the same cos fully weighted), i have played the launchkey before, its a bit light for my touch so prefer heavier keys to do orchestral stuff

Many thanks. Solid review. TBH I'm looking to buy the M-Audio & was searching for a bit of confirmation bias, but you make an interesting point about the clicky-clacky issue. Peace!
Was interesting to hear that you judged the novation keybed as more dynamic. The sound does seem to sustain for a bit longer/in a softer way. I'll have to test that out next time I'm at a store. To be honest though, when I was trying the novation launchkey MK3 vs M-audio keystation MK3 (which I believe has the same keybed as the oxygen pro), I wrote off the novation because of the keys. They felt more springy and the pressure vs sound curve seemed imbalanced - to get the loudest sound, I had to press rather hard. On m-audio the pressure vs sound gradation seemed smoother. I'm very much a beginner though, so I'd be interested to hear others' opinion on this.
The velocity sensitivity can be adjusted on either controller, so if you have to press too hard, or vice versa, you can change the pickup from linear to logarithmic, or to hardcoded zones like 3 part 40/70/127, 2 part 64/127 or lock it to 1 value like 80 90 or 100.
can you set up sounds to increase in volume with slides? I have the M-audio pro 61 and I want to be able to use it in worship settings along with the sliders to fade in sounds… can someone let me know.
I didn't get to try out the Novation. I'm an Ableton user but it seems the MAudio can do most if not all of the Ableton stuff. I do like the Novation layout better but the keybed was the most important one. I just couldn't agree to the hollow feel of the Novation keys.

Great review. You confirmed my Oxygen Pro 49 decision. One man's bug is another man's feature. I like the tactile, audible response of the buttons on the Oxygen, I like having pads on the right side (I'm right handed), and I use Pro Tools so the Ableton compatibility doesn't do much for me. I haven't seen any demo of the M-audio with Ableton, but the Launchkey for example lets you capture midi, stop/start/record, launch scenes and clips (!), control devices (VST, plugins). The novation is the best integrated with Ableton of all midi keyboards. Check out loopop's review.
You’re talking semi-weighted vs a full weighted 88key piano style keys...it’s apples and oranges...but the keylab is one of the best feeling keybeds out there...but if given the choice...I would get the SL88 by studiologic because it’s the same keybed for half the price
Very useful detail in this video, but you keeping saying “this” rather than the name of the controller. I was listening on a walk and had to keep checking the screen & rewinding to see where your hands were hovering to see what “this” meant. Otherwise thanks… I’m more informed but further from a decision! 😂 guess they’re both decent options!
I've been watching your MIDI keyboard controller reviews. As a pianist, which do you think has the better keybed between these two in this video, Alesis v25, and Nektar Impact LX25+? I think I'd be better off getting one with Midi Out so I'm focusing on the 2 in this video, but also considering other options. I need something with a mod wheel and drum pads, that also feels as much like playing a piano as possible in terms of the weight and responsively of the keys. Preferably semi-weighted, and I don't care whether the keys are stubby or full length, but they've got to be full width. I'd appreciate it if you could share your opinion as a pianist as to which would be best between these. Thanks!
If keyboard feel is highly important, the best value is Hammer 88 from M Audio. Not so much a controller like these two, but superb piano feel (I've been playing piano for 50 years)
Hello. I am very interested in the launchkey mk3, especially because of the technology it has, since I don't just know the basics on the keyboard. I understand it is compatible with the Cubase program (via HUI), since I use that program. But will I be able to use all the functionalities or what functions could not be performed with Cubase? since I understand this is optimized for Ableton Thanks I hope you can read me
I've seen you have quite a number of videos involving the Novation Launchkey, but could you also do a review on the Novation Impulse? It seems to be quite popular.
You know, let me tell you, I watched this video before choosing between the Novation Launchkey MK3 49 (purchased) and the M-Audio Pro 49, and it helped. I use Ableton and Acid. I also am a long-time M-Audio user (Oxygen 25 Air(?), Radium 49, and Oxygen-II 49) so I had a sense of brand loyalty. But when I took a deeper look at the Novation MK3, I really liked the way the drum pads are so multi-use, and can quickly be used for so many modes. It would've been good to bring light to this. Novation put a lot of extra and very useful function modes into the drum pad area, ie: sound and instrument library menu navigation. I also like the way the Novation's track buttons on the bottoms of the sliders light up matching the colors of the Ableton DAW's track colors. But yeah, I miss the on/off switch too. In the end, I got a sense that M-Audio has just fell behind in terms of function and electronic modernity. The Oxygen Pro has some good things going for it, but I would expect more from a company so established in this market. When compared side by side to the Novation, the Oxygen pro still feels like the company is stuck in the old heyday Oxygen-II days. Novation offers a sleek, versatile, well-crafted, and functionally deep midi controller. But to be honest? I'll most likely get a Novation SL-MK3 49 next. Now that's a controller.
@Scripturenest Arturia Keylab, Nektar Panorama, Akai MPK-series have aftertouch. Take a look at the Keylab first. (Panorama designed to integrate with all DAWs except the ones I use, Ableton and Logic. Nice if you use other DAWs though.)
@@qwe1231 Midi controllers are not just for synth use though. If synth work is your bag then cool, but for me the weighted keys suits my piano background.
Neither. I would go with SL MK III. And I did. However. M Audio Oxygen has one thing SL MK III just doesn't have and that is superb feel for keys that any piano player would appreciate. I really wish it were possible to swap the keybed of SL MK III for one in Oxygen.
Could someone that knows their stuff please help me out once and for all. Need a new board by the end of the month. Using Mac/Logic and can only stretch to £350. I need expressive keys, so good vel curves, prefereably semi-wighted and after touch. Also need some real time control of VST's/samples for live work via pots and faders. Which 61 key controller do I buy?
It's a bit older compared to the others, but I'm a big fan of the Novation Impulse 61. it doesn't have a ton of features as it's a bit older than the others in its price range. Comes with after touch as well. The Novation Launchkey doesn't have after touch. The Oxygen pro does, but there have been some issues with lag with it. Especially with the Pitch Bend/Mod Wheels.
Did you get the mk3 essential? How is it? I’m looking for a new controller myself. Was considering the new arturia but also see it has less buttons. My nektar t6 had a stick drum pad so replacing it.
Cool! I have been looking for a controller. I considered the Arturia and several others but settled for the novation launchkey mk3. It arrives tomorrow. I was able to get a feel of the keys a week ago. I had the nektar t6 which had a lot of features but I couldn’t get used to the keybed. I saw from some reading and videos that the novation is more in line for what I want to do live.

I have the same two keyboards that you have bro! So far, I've been working more the LaunchKey board. I plan on working with the Oxygen Pro board this week to get a better comparison of the two boards. Thanks.
Thanks for the good review. I am interested in a comparison between the arpeggiator, chord and scale modes between these two. Was this something you looked at? I suspect Launchkey is better. Then also compatibility with Cubase. It is a shame Launchkey does not have aftertouch - though its pads do (according to the manual). Novation SLMkIII has all of the above - but over my budget. Right now, Launchkey 61 is cheaper than Launchkey 49 where I am ! (Sorry if the comment appears twice? I'm having trouble with UA-cam).
I’m always let down by the feel of M-Audio’s key bed…and the Oxygen’s keys are cut so high and jagged. Glissandos tear ya whole hand up if you don’t send the board flying off the stand first. 😂 I’m still searching for the best feel of a keyboard midi controller.
The M-Audio seems like a good choice for keyboards, besting Akai (most common reference brand) in value for money; the Oxygen Pro Mini is at around 100 EUR here in Europe, if that, and the Oxygen Pro 49 is just some 70 EUR more(!). After-touch and extra software in the package are the deal-closers - I'd look no further, TBH.
I like the power switch, I have a Keystation 61es and a Launchpad X but they are plunged on the HUB at the monitor and that is always powered, I can just turn the switch on the M-Audio but I need unplung the launchpad or I will have a full color rainbow all the night at my room :,D
clicky buttons means that they are switches and not membranes. I prefer switches for longevity. I can see that the Novation sliders have a longer sweep at cost of deskspace depth. Velocity is adjustable on M Audio for sure.

Since I'm learning multiple DAWs I really don't have a problem with my Oxygen Pro 61 if you're a heavy Logic user and the control functionality is what your looking for go with the Launchkey for sure. You can work around it but it definitely ain't for logic although now even in logic it's my main board so it just depends on you. It works perfect in GarageBand however which is weird because you know Logic is based off of GB so it doesn't make sense why it was so hard for them to make it compatible all the way with logic. Regardless im happy overall with my board hope this helps guys.

My God an Allie!!!
MAudio also intergrates very well with Ableton.
(while the other black keys are very silent. Just 5 black keys made this, the last 3 from the 3rd octave and the first 2 from the 4th octave)
Fl studio made support for the Novation and it’s actually very well mapped.
Great review, thanks. Still I can't understand which is better for playing live (no daw usage). 😅

After your review i bought the oygen pro, so now i have launchkey 37 mk3 and oyxgen pro 61, the pad of the launchkey are far better ,more responsive and with aftertouch but smaller and there 's no note repeat ( i miss it ), i don't really like the keybed on the lk nor on the op, the keybed on the launchkey feels "hollow" like you said and there's aftertouch on the op but the spring on the launchkey is a bit more tense so i feel more connected to the launchkey so at the end i am more confortable with the launchkey
The pitch wheel and modwheel on the launchkey are better too ( there's a kind of lag on pitchbend of oxy pro).
What about the weighting of the keys? I didn't get which you prefer.

Did you manage to get it working? I'm having real trouble with the transport controls.

Which keyboard has better keys?

Good video. Thanks for posting, John Mike.
Can anybody tell me, is the Oxygen Pro fully compatible with the MPC Live 2 in standalone mode? Thanks.
It's a tough one. The novation dynamics v the oxygen pro after touch 🤔 y'all finna make me buy 2 of these.

@Scripturenest Arturia Keylab, Nektar Panorama, Akai MPK-series have aftertouch. Take a look at the Keylab first. (Panorama designed to integrate with all DAWs except the ones I use, Ableton and Logic. Nice if you use other DAWs though.)

Neither. I would go with SL MK III. And I did. However. M Audio Oxygen has one thing SL MK III just doesn't have and that is superb feel for keys that any piano player would appreciate. I really wish it were possible to swap the keybed of SL MK III for one in Oxygen.

The M-Audio seems like a good choice for keyboards, besting Akai (most common reference brand) in value for money; the Oxygen Pro Mini is at around 100 EUR here in Europe, if that, and the Oxygen Pro 49 is just some 70 EUR more(!). After-touch and extra software in the package are the deal-closers - I'd look no further, TBH.
well nowadays, Novation integrated Aftertouch and controls for any DAW, so today This controller does not lose to anyone on his category
I like the power switch, I have a Keystation 61es and a Launchpad X but they are plunged on the HUB at the monitor and that is always powered, I can just turn the switch on the M-Audio but I need unplung the launchpad or I will have a full color rainbow all the night at my room :,D
