Imagine if Jason had a chance to contribute more stuff... This song stands as a testament to how great Newstead made the band. Hope Rob gets to do the same. He is just as awesome a bass player.
According to Jason, the original version he wrote was a bit more complex. My Friend of Misery was originally supposed to be the album's instrumental track ala Ktulu, Orion and To Live Is to Die. But Bob Rock convinced the band to turn it into a more streamlined song with lyrics.
James has said (on Howard Stern) that he loves writing melodies and solos etc, but playing live, he much rather leave the solos to Kirk. He can do them, he just prefers playing rhythm and singing. Adding a bunch of solos would be too much work.
I'm probably going to get flak for this, but this is probably my most favorite Metallica song of all time. It was really comforting for me throughout my life - in high school all through today. I've had to deal with more than my fair share of people like this that the song describes and these people hurt others more than words could describe. I just love this song so damn much and I can never just listen to it once when it starts. There's something about that monotonous bass line that's just so soothing and comforting. I used to listen to this song on repeat to go to sleep at times... thank you Metallica (and Jason).
this is probably the 100th or so time I have listened to this song and every time I do I listen to it about 5 to 10 times in a row. I get your whole comment. There definitely comfort in every note and string.
Carlos Berges He means the 2012 tour where they played the whole album and debuted a bunch of songs like this one, struggle within and don't tread on me.
My favorite track from The Black Album. TO think this would never have existed had Newsted joined the band kills me (since he wrote the main riff) as I wish every time I listen to Metallica that Cliff had never left us, but then we wouldn't have gems like this.. really conflicting. RIP Cliff, and Hell yeah Jason!
Joshua Elsner No he didn't, Jason wrote it. This song was originally supposed to be an instrumental. Jason made a tape with his ideas for the instrumental, and James and Lars decided to only use the intro and make it a song.
If they would have allowed Jason’s input to happen more, OMG! The music would have been even better! I hate the fact Jason just quit. That’s kinda bullshit because from my understanding, they didn’t get any warnings. Do I blame Jason, hell no, but hate he did it that way. But did they deserve any different? Probably not.
The harmony with the crowd....now that is amazing. People may give Metallica shit for their lack of "talent" or "technical prowess". But to pull off something like that at a concert....just breathtaking.
Probably my favourite song off of The Black Album. The melody & lyrics to this song just hits me every time even though I've heard it thousands of times since 1991. James just killed it on this performance..,I almost cried watching this!!
At 17:09, This is why I love Metallica and why they stand tall above the Big Four as musicians and performers. No offense but this kind of total communion with Metallica's music (making three part harmonies with their fans) would never happen in a Slayer, Megadeth or Anthrax's gigs ever.
WOW, I saw this song and crowd routine at Orion 2012. Metallica is seriously the best live band ever in my opinion, their epic involvement with the audience and the way they so flawlessly change rhythms and songs is mindblowing. thanks again for the upload and the BTS, I'm loving every one
I was here at Soundwave 2013.. It was one hell of a show.. so much singing! I was in the second part harmony.. Was a massive long day and so many bands at this Soundwave... Probably the best festival I've been to.
This is one of my most favorite bass lines played by a bassist ever..written by Jason just no words to describe it love the harmony when Metallica really wants to show out...lol
Makes me wonder how good could it be the instrumental version of this. That moment in 14:43 was one of the most emotional notes from James ever. Like the ones he uses in riff tapes, so deep and dark
As someone like me who has listened to Metallica since the 80's, this is one of my favorite songs of theirs, and of all time. It definitely helped me out in times of need growing up. Plus the riff is so raw and emotional like the lyrics. Masterpiece!
Metallica never played the entire song live with Jason, they played live for the first time in 2012. Man, Jason Newsted made Metallica for me and I didn't realise this until he left. Great song that shows off Newsted's talents and shows how truly underrated and underappreciated he was in the band. Respect Newsted!
I'm so glad they realized My Friend of Misery is worth playing live. Well after Newsted left. Ugh. Saw them play it at Orion last year...it was so odd seeing Rob playing the thing.
Yes it does But it's still interesting to see it being played with fingers Like when Jason used to play Cliff's parts with a pick I just find things being played in different ways(or something like that) interesting
I love the comes in right after that really soft melodic passage. I put that in like my top 3 Metallica solos and its also a favorite solo of mine in general, across all bands. I love how it just has a really electronic, maybe even robotic sound to it. That solo is nasty, I can never get enough of it.
14:43 makes me wonder how good could it be the instrumental version of this. That moment in 14:43 was one of the most emotional notes from James ever. Like the ones he uses in riff tapes, so deep and dark
I have always loved this song. As a major fan of this band, this is the song I often use to introduce people to Metallica. From there they usually begin to understand our obsession with them.
Is it me, or has James got into incredible physical shape coincided with his voice returning to, well almost early 90s style? Physically it makes perfect sense as his diaphram is more accessible he also is very kind.
Bboy(with a banana) That was 2003. His voice was at its weakest from about 2006-2011. Not that it was bad, just not quite as strong as before (and he probably didn't wanna blow it out again like he did twice on Black).
Those who don’t understand the passion towards metal need to see this . Every soul touched . Every soul blessed by beautiful sound ....love and devotion to you ....we are blessed.
I mean, everyone has personal tastes and I imagine he probably enjoyed it more than he would have this if he was a fan. Its okay to like different things.
Metallica PLEASE play this song more often ! Its the perfect song for the crowd and for the fan inside the crowd one of the biggest goose flesh he/she will ever have.
nothing better than watching a Metallica concert and when they play the songs that James obviously has an emotional connection with.....the band hits another level.
I love it Nikki sixx asked James about how Metallica would pratice 24/7 before theyd go on, and It shows Metallica are the bands of bands because james answered with the answer id give, "At the end of the day we"re all friends who relate to the music and it hypes us up and gives us our purpose, it gives us our reassurance we can just go out there and jam and do our thing" all id want to do is play for fun before going on so we know we're together linked up ready
This gave me chills. Absolutely impressive. Now I'm 16, but since I was a child I used to listen to Metallica, and I don't know how or why, but everytime I listen to some of their songs, it's always like the first time. To me, James and kirk are gods. Would have liked to see cliff still with them.
I remember the first time that I heard Black Album. I knew some musics from it like Enter Sandman and Sad but True, but not the entire album. I had a fever. It was a bout of bronchitis. When this song started playing, I immediately felt an unbelievable and extremely strong emotional and bodily reaction. I felt ready again! Long live to Jason Newsteed! Greatings from Brazil!
Seriously, jason was a beast. Rob is a beast. But guys, cliff. Cliff is like a kraken or bigger. Cliff made the band, learn then soooo much. Just listen to master of puppets album and you will hear what am talking about.
Thank You Metallica for playing this song live !!! AWESOME i Love it ! I just wonder how would it sound in a area when you play it ... singin it 20.000 people it would be just Eargasm ... Thank you again and im so Happy i was able to hear it live was amazing unforgettabel moment !!!
Why would you say that the Black Album is an underrated album? It's the selling album of the Soundscan era, people are still buying this record 20 years after its release. It is not underrated, and hell yeah it's a great album!
Holy shit I never realised there was a video for this song! Second time I've seen Metallica. Please get well soon James, we need you back down in Melbs \m/
This song is so underrated...
get da fuck out here men
Why ?
+Bathoryyy because he wants you to.
It was the first metallica song i learned on my bass
really its either friend or orion for first metallica bass song
xD

Sad but true
The irony

and it sounded GREAT too..... very well done
Respect to the People that were already signing before it happened ✊
Chuck Berry “My Ding-A-Ling” London 1972. That’s what you get in places where schoolkids are forced into Catholic hymns all day.
Queen.
Iron Maiden - Fear of the dark (rock in rio)
Imagine if Jason had a chance to contribute more stuff... This song stands as a testament to how great Newstead made the band.
Hope Rob gets to do the same. He is just as awesome a bass player.
Jason just rewrote the opening baseline from the song "Anesthesia - Pulling Teeth" for "My Friend Misery"
So, give Cliff all the credit for that song.
LSweet2007 No, its pretty different...
moonman_v True, Jason never had a lot of room to really compose his stuff and Robert is a good player too!
It may be different rhythm but the notes are the same, using the 10 and 12 etc.
According to Jason, the original version he wrote was a bit more complex. My Friend of Misery was originally supposed to be the album's instrumental track ala Ktulu, Orion and To Live Is to Die. But Bob Rock convinced the band to turn it into a more streamlined song with lyrics.
When the song breaks down and James splits the crowd into a 2-part harmony, that's just beautiful. This song should be a staple, not Enter Sandman!
ShortFingeredShreder so true
Absolutely, this was a real highlight of the set when I saw them do it in 2012, they should bust this out way, way, waaaaay more in the future.
Why not both?
GameOfInches THIS is the best song off the Black Album. Like, by a mile. They need to drop, Sad, Nothing & Sandman.
i like that part so freakin much
Nobody can control a crowd like James!
james the wolf hetfield
What about Anselmo?
Василий Пупкин yeah thats true, anselmo rules too
Василий Пупкин Anselmo flat out bullies crowds and it's fun to watch.
BJ can control a crowd too.
Killer harmony guitar solo! James always pokes fun at his own lead playing..but he's very solid.
James has said (on Howard Stern) that he loves writing melodies and solos etc, but playing live, he much rather leave the solos to Kirk. He can do them, he just prefers playing rhythm and singing. Adding a bunch of solos would be too much work.
That harmony part is amazing, I love how the crowd carry on through the solo....best thing I've heard in ages.
I could just sit and watch Metallica jam all day and everyday and not get bored. That is how much I love Metallica.
i know right
same af
Be cool to get paid for it 😁
My favorite song from "Black Album" thank you Jason 👊
17:52 That guitars duet part must be one of greatest from Metallica, it’s sounds epic and beautiful at the same time
The amazing is the guitars playing and crowd still is singing … together …
Close your eyes and listen. 16:18 the crowd gets it perfect! \m/
15:22 Hetfield is a very talented frontman.
goosebumps
This song should have been the 4th Metallica instrumental.
5th if you also count Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) ... 1. Anesthesia, 2. Ktulu, 3. Orion, 4. To live is to die
+Matúš Livora suicide or redemption is a instrumental aswell so make it 6
+Väinö “Hybbyri” Laamanen Friend came out before Suicide, so Suicide is the 6th
No, the instrumental music left with Cliff.
Suicide and Redemption isn't an instrumental?
I'm probably going to get flak for this, but this is probably my most favorite Metallica song of all time. It was really comforting for me throughout my life - in high school all through today. same here, after 24 years it is still my favorite Metallica song.
Trikxty Me too!
Trikxty no this is an amazing song I love it too
If you love this song just listen it once a day ;) make 40 million views and than they will play it again live hopefully ;)
this is probably the 100th or so time I have listened to this song and every time I do I listen to it about 5 to 10 times in a row. I get your whole comment. There definitely comfort in every note and string.
Brilliant live execution especially by James on a song so rarely played live and so underrated...
They did a whole black album tour
Carlos Berges ok im late. But that tour was like in 1992 or something...
Benjamin Holmberg 1994
Carlos Berges He means the 2012 tour where they played the whole album and debuted a bunch of songs like this one, struggle within and don't tread on me.
Thank you Jason Newstead for this beautiful song.
Good, but could have used something like "This is a song from our friend Jason".
Not necessary at all.
@@willperza2080 Jason was the spirit of Metallica
@@shiramizrachi5838 never said he wasn't
I fucking love the dual guitar solo.
This is the proof of why James was, is and will be the best fucking frontman in the world. Nailed it!

My favorite track from The Black Album. IIRC, Kirk wrote that opening riff for guitar, but decided it'd sound better on bass.
Joshua Elsner
No he didn't, Jason wrote it. This song was originally supposed to be an instrumental. Jason made a tape with his ideas for the instrumental, and James and Lars decided to only use the intro and make it a song.

I dunno, man. Corey Taylor does a pretty damn good job of it.

When the crowd is harmonizing, along with the solo, is absolutely beautiful. These motherfuckers sure have earned their place in music forever tenfold
18:06 I love that bend that Robert does with his bass
Very Cliff-like :,)
Really good! The bass make this song so beautiful!
Glad I was there in the crowd live. to witness this...
Might get called a pussy for this but right when James parted the crowd and started singing I busted into tears just beautiful
It gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. It's so pretty.
I actually felt like crying too. That was really beautiful hAha

Hammet's still got it. Little more soul, little less technicality than in the ol' days but... it works
More soul and less technicality is always better.
HinjuRock both being good would be great though
jesus, james harmonized the crowd...that was fucking amazing.

Thanks for this awesome song Jason.
I love at the 6:20 mark when Lars has to give James timing lessons. It's probably one of the only times that has ever happened.
look at James 6:36 even he doesn't know what's going on
James must be so tired xD
Artstar2 Probably because Lars cried for a nap and got his nap. Hahaha

I know this from more than a meet n greet
***** It is really hilarious to hear someone actually say lars gets 'worse' or can't play.
Look at lars playing one now, no double bass. That is just really sad, because he was a great drummer back in the day.
Beautifully played, and the crowd is sooo great here.
The part around 17:40 that James plays reminds me of Until It Sleeps
