This is awesome! I think this should be a series that graduates to intermediate and then advanced. This is a great way to do tool tips and REAL reviews of products we actually use every day, but not reviews to sell (sponsered), real "I use it and this is how and why" information. Invariably, we will find ourselves reaching for what really works for us. We can tell our stories and learn!!!

That was the best advice my professor gave us years ago, was to buy the besy quality tools, as they would last a lifetime, or more! Swiss & German come to mind, when I acquired all of mine.

I would - and did - join a lapidary club so I could try a lot of tools, see what I was finding myself doing, and then see what I really needed for my home bench and what I could rely on the club to use that I couldn't yet afford.
Yes, that's a great way to learn about what you need. As we said in the video, it's usually best to build your tool "hoard" by only purchasing what you need at the time. Also, knowing what a tool does is important Thanks for your excellent idea. Clubs, makerspaces, and public jewelry studios are a great way to see if you want/need tools. Happy creating!

@@LionPunchForgeLPF Lapidary clubs often support many different kinds of labs including silversmithing, casting, kilns, bench lathes, presses, faceting and lots of hand tools etc. and will have many tools beyond the budget of the home smith that members can use before they invest.

Hey guys. How about a video showing us how to re-finish/polish things like railroad ties and Harbor Freight hammers into great usable tools. For instance when you say use sandpaper, do you mean sandpaper by hand? Or with special tools? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I would really like to see it in action. Thanks in advance,.

Don't cut binding wire for soldering with good flush cutters . I learned the hard way $200 pliers ruined .
Great point! I've since switched to copper binding wire and there's no planning ahead involved! Haha. Thank you!
What is the best way to get that shiny bench block?? Can my old one be sanded/polished to clean it up?
Yes! If it is really dented, an electric sander with rough grits like 220 then up to 320, 400, then you can move to hand sanding with 600, 800, 1200, and a final polish with rouge. Make sure you keep all steel working tools separate from your other tools. Steel can contaminate silver and gold filings. If you don't have an electric sander, you can use a steel-dedicated file to take the metal down to a smooth surface. If it's just scratched, use sandpaper and then polish. One more thought, it would help if you could clamp the block down while finishing so that it doesn't move all over the place! Don't forget a particulate mask and eye protection! Goggles AND a face shield wouldn't hurt!!!
