  • This video is about making your own bezel strip, creating a bezel, soldering it to a backplate and trimming the backplate and a whole heck of a lot more! This is part one of a two part series.
In the second video, I'll demonstrate how I solder the bezel to a ring shank and set a cabochon. Coming soon!

Thank you so much. Now that summer markets have wrapped up I decided it's time to learn how to do this, another arrow in the quiver. Your videos are so very clear and informative, and you yourself are delightful, so it's nice to have you on while I beaver away at something. (People often ask me where I studied, and so I tell them about you & the University of UA-cam)

Your instructions are great because you explain in detail the things that you should watch for while trying to make the bezel. I have been going nuts trying to get my bezel right so this video was a great help.

I went to jewelry school back in the early 80's and I guess no one had ever heard of the ribbon hack for checking stone size... at least no one bothered to tell US! LOL Seems like a natural thing to do, but... nope. I tried to rattle MANY stones out in the ultrasonic before drilling the dreaded hole in the base. If I ever DO make jewelry again, I'll NEVER forget this priceless tip! Thank you!

What is it with the schools? I took only one jewelry class, while I was in interior design school, at a very prominent school with an internationally know teacher - and never once did he mention even little basics like flex shafts that I recall. We certainly didn't get to use any.I spent half the class just trying to sand things by hand, which totally did in my older, partially arthritic digits, to the point that I wasn't even able to attempt setting a stone, and got a horrible grade for the class. My primary memories of it are about my instructor almost having a heart attack if I didn't have the torch flame *exactly* right, or, God forbid, used the "wrong" hammer. Something I had looked forward to doing for literally *decades* was ruined for me practically overnight and I swore off of it and even gave away half my tools. I've learned in the last few years between classes at my local beadshop, shows like Bead & Button, and UA-cam videos like Nancy's, that there are, in fact, much easier ways of doing things, and lo and behold, I actually *am* able to make jewelry without crippling myself! So why do the schools make it so damn difficult?

This is super helpful, Nancy; thanks! I love knowing I don't have to be beholden to the stock items sold by the various vendors.
I love that hairstyle on you, too!
I've got a couple of questions.
I've got a few cabs that are completely (or almost completely) straight-sided - and also flat on top, and one of them is particularly small. What's the best way of dealing with this condition?
Also, my hands don't cope too well with manually sanding and polishing metal, which earned me a horrible grade in jewelry class in design school since I couldn't finish my projects, and made me swear off of metalwork for what I thought was going to be forever. Can't a flexshaft be used for all of that stuff you are filing, both inside and outside the bezel? Which little tool thingies for it would you use, especially to clean up the solder inside?
    TIA!

    • @hhhhhhhhh61
      @hhhhhhhhh61 7 років тому

Joni Filice she didn't say but you can see the guage written on the sheet as 24 ga for the side walls and then she talks about using heavier gage sheet like 22 ga for the back plate depending on the end use ie floating in space, attached to ring.

Hmm...I'm wondering, can you do this with mild steel wire that's been flattened instead of silver and such? I'm not being cheap, it's just that I have more access to common stuff as opposed to precious/semiprecious materials.

  • @guloguloguy

.....I'm just curious: have you ever tried t make a "Raised Bezel", (by folding the edge over, and "raising" it, all the way around, by carefully hammering it , [vs one that is made by cutting a separate strip of sheet metal, and then soldering it onto a flat back piece]?.... I often see your method done, but, I would think that properly "raising" a bezel might even be faster, easier, and stronger, once mastered.

  • @AlwaysMetaling

I wondered please if you have any tips on polishing please?, as I am fed up with having a red face!, and rouge splattering everywhere. I guess that I should be wearing a mask, not just to hide my face LOL, but for health reasons. Not sure how you do this? Do you have a dedicated area for polishing?

This is the first vid of your's that I watch, and I have questions... I would love to see your tool/equipment collection! Just from what I've seen on here, it has to be HUGE! ...and must have cost a fortune!!! I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to see a tour of your workshop, like other crafter's have shown. If you don't mind..
QUESTION: I didn't see you add flux on the sheet before you soldered the bezel to it. I am just starting to learn about soldering and can't wait to do more than just watch how-to's! :-)
I'm sure I have many more Q's but have too many other things on my mind right now. ...like my brand new grand baby that will arrive into this messed up world, on or before the 15th (July 2017)!!!! I can't wait to love on him and see what kind of mommy and daddy my daughter and son-in-law will make! ....and what kind of Grammie (or Mimi, MeMe, MeeMee????) I have asked my FB friends what they are called and for suggestions that they think would fit me.
Any suggestions here? This profile pic is kinda old, (about 7 yrs I think) but I am 49 and think of myself as a "young grandmother (not an option as a name). The above names are what I am considering right now. I'll probably try to be a Mother Hen, but my daughter most likely won't let me...
BTW, little Carter Anthony has 3 nieces that are older than him, a brother that is older than his mother and his daddy is older than ME!!!! ...ROTFLMBO!!! (brother is 33, Mommy is 29, Daddy is 53 and as I've said, I am 49 ...oh and a sister that is about 8)
    Sorry bout the off-topic rambling!

I believe its 24 gauge or about .05 mm if you watch the sheet she is cutting from there is a 24 marked in the corner. You can make any thickness some harder to push than others is all
