In this video Nancy shows you how to (safely) Polish, Buff, and Finish your Jewelry with a Buffing Motor (aka Polishing Motor or Bench Buffer) and a Flex Shaft. She discusses different types of compounds including Rouge and Tripoli, and different types of buffs including Muslin, Flannel, and Felt. You will also learn how to fluff your buff!

I really loved this video - so much. I've heard snippets of each of those products, never was this compared to the others in the same category. I'm kinda overwhelmed, but since this video was made 7 years ago, I know it will be there for me when I need to go back to it. I have pages of notes though! You're a doll - and I thank you so much. Nancy, you are a gem. I've been doing a lot of research before I order my supplies and I keep coming across your wonderful videos & website. You have answered so many of my questions (and knowing how every tool & metal comes in a million variations, you know I had a ton!). Thanks for another great video! I'm learning metalsmithing on my own and I ordered some red rouge and brown tripoli because... I wish I could say it was because I knew I needed them and exactly what they were for, but in reality I was like ooh! I heard the smart people talk about those! Add to cart! So, now, as usual, coming at it bassackwards, I know what the heck to do with them. Thanks!

Awesome, I voted on this :) On a side note I made a really fun long straight link chain with jump rings connecting them. Kind of like 3 inches of 16 gauge with the edges hammered then jump ring etc. Had it contoured to fit the neck nicely and then I tried to polish it :/ Its amazing how fast straight sterling silver can become a ball when its winding around the thingy at 4 zillion rpm lol. I will now watch the video and learn to do it right, thank you! Tommy

I was making a piece of custom jewelry, for the sake of nostalgia. I wanted to polish it "a bit", not to a sparkling shine, but still having a bit of light reflection to it, as it's a rough semi-precious stone/crystal. Then this video showed up... Now I know what this bit ( 25:40 ) in my rotary tool toolbox, is for. Thanks! 🤗

Nancy's not kidding when she says it's dangerous. For newcomers to the polishing process: Until you've had a piece of metal pulled out of your hand, when you thought you had a secure grip, or seen the whipping action from a loose piece of chain, you just don't know how very dangerous the polishing wheel is. USE GREAT CAUTION at the polishing wheel. The results are beautiful, but it is a powerful tool and one wrong move, a loose lace on a shirt or dangling chain that holds one eyeglasses or holding the piece being polished at the wrong angle is all it takes to get seriously injured. I was stunned the first time I had an incident at the wheel, it is capable of very serious injury.
Was a jewelry model maker for 18 years and am not quite familiar with some of these technical terms : D

I'm so glad that you you talked about polishing chain. I don't have a tumbler so wrapping the chain around a thick round thing to anchor it really does seem like it's much safer than not using one. I'm going to try that the first chance I get. I have found with my little bit of experimentation, that I also prefer the sanding paper wheels than anything else. I wish that there were pro polishing pads for the flex shaft.

Hi Gin, Nope, not necessary. Actually, I don't use my polishing motor all that much - usually for bigger pieces or for production (which I don't do often). So, have fun polishing/finishing with your flex shaft. Take care and thanks for the comment. N

Hello Nancy I have a question for you. How do you protect a polished surface when your have doing a brushing surface very close to it ?
I like to use painter's tape. If you can, tape off the area that you want to protect. You could also try painting some heated-up beeswax over the area to protect too. Nail polish might work too. Use a fine-tipped brush. You'll need nail polish remover to take it off later and to clean your brush. I haven't tried this but, seems like it should work? A lot depends on how much surface area needs to be covered and how easy it is to access. Using silicone points also helps. You can re-shape or sharpen them on a file by dragging the abrasive (in a flex shaft) down a file's surface. Wear a mask! i'm trying to BUFF ( should i say SHINE ?) small steel pieces you find on the shelves of the building materials at " home depot". they use those pieces for combining wood in various ways for construction.
since those pieces are relatively small, they fall under the same category of what you talk about in your video. i'm only looking to SHINE a piece, NOT to eliminate scratches, etc.
but i'm still confused : mostly about the SEQUENCE of the buffing process,
and : the materials/ compounds to use. in other words : what compound to start with ?
what next ? etc.
i got a hand drill powerful enough as a wheel mover and i have the " buffing kit" from home depot. if you clarify further the points i made ~ that would be lovely 😇🙀

Are we supposed to wash our piece between each compound? Will it cross contaminate somehow? I think this may be a problem I’m having.

Hi, I recently bought Fabulustre to polish my handstamped metal. I have a tumbler but wanted a brighter finish. I used it with a dremel but it is leaving a dark coat on my metal and looks dirty. What am I doing wrong? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have a 18K gold bracelet that there is satin finish on surface of gold. there is very light scratches on gold, so I want to refinish the surface. What do I do first? Sand it or high polish it or just use the satin finish wheel?

I have a titanium finished watch case and took to a dremel with 320 grit buffing wheel but I cannot seem to get an overall even satin finish as i usually do on stainless steel.
I have on order some radial bristle discs 320 & 400 grit to see if they can improve the job but it is getting expensive ordering all these accessories... i am almost thinking of using barkeepers friend and polish by hand to try and get an overall even finish but not so sure.. Do you know of any pastes out there which can be hand applied to touch up a satin finish after dremel use?

Hi, Nancy! I know this video is very old video, but I found it the most relevant for my question. You said you don't usually coat your copper and brass, but in that case how do you protects the customers' skin from turning green? I have tried a few types of wax and polish but they absolutely do not work for rings and the metal ends up oxidising and colouring people's skin
Thanks for watching that antique! Haha. I stopped making rings and bracelets in copper, brass or bronze - unless they are prototypes. They can be sealed but, the sealant will wear off - especially on rings and bracelets. It's a never-ending conundrum! You can also sweat solder a silver lining onto the insides of both bracelets/cuffs and rings. Extra work though. I haven't found a great solution. You could try a clear, shiny or matte powder coating? Good luck! N

hi, can anyone help, when I go to buff my silver with the flex and the bench grinder, the white wheels I use just go black, then the black goes over the rest of the piece ? all my white pads are all black now, anyone else had this problem ? I bought a block of rouge but its like a copy one, could it be that ? is rouge meant to be soft mine is rock hard ? any help will be appreciated thanks

And they've just come out with a lightweight Dremel that is also narrow, like an electric toothbrush, so can easily be held in one hand!

Hi Bluecorner, Have you checked out EverBrite's site? They have a ton of information on their products. I have never tried it on silver plate but, don't see why it wouldn't work.
